This restaurant is the bomb! Growing up, I used to frequent the original location in Stockton. Nothing was ever better in my mind. Til this day, I still think Mongolian BBQ is the best! This location in Modesto is great! The food is always fresh and I love that I can make my own bowls the way I want. The staff was very helpful; it was my first time there, so they helped me fill my bowl and made some really good suggestions. The end product was AMAZING. I loved being able to control what exactly went into my meal. It was a great deal as well. for $7 I got my bowl (in a takeout container), an egg roll, a side of rice, and a drink. Took the family for dinner last week. Overall, we enjoyed it. The dinner was all you could eat. They serve soup, won tons, a small bowl of white rice, and peanut bread with the meal. I liked the soup (although it was lukewarm) but didn't care for the other sides. The bowl was tasty with plenty of veggies and meats to choose from. The side of shrimp was also very tasty. We've been fairly regular customers here for a few years now. Usually enjoy the food, kids eat free for dinner. But the cleanliness was absolutely apauling tonight (usually but that great, but especially bad tonight.) the floor is super sticky, food dropped everywhere (I mean the entire room!) there was a sticky ant trap in the bathroom floor and it looked like it hadnt been touched in several days. I'm sad to say we won't come back unless they get their act together and clean the place up ! I am a regular customer and have been going to GK Mongolian since they opened, I use to come every Wednesday with my Dad. Last night I had the worst experience and I WILL NEVER GO BACK! Our table was not attended to but the table next to us was, we had to take our drinks to get refilled, when I brought this to the cashiers attention about the horrible customer service she said " Well I cant turn back and change it". Then we spoke with the "manager" and he looked at us and said "Well what do you want me to do". Never once did anyone of them apologize for there staff and the service. Visited GK Mongolian a few days ago and have been wanting to try this type and style of food for awhile which is why it was a shame that I did not enjoy the experience. Me and my significant other walked in with the intention of sharing a bowl as we have heard from friends that portions are pretty big. When the main guy behind the counter came up to us right before our food was to be grilled he came up to us and stated that we might as well get another bowl if both of us are eating as we would be charged for two either way. I feel this was incredibly rude and tasteless. No where did it state that rule in view to notify the customers. Now that I look back we should have left the full bowl of food on the counter and left. Egg drop soup was good but cold. Egg roll was good as well as the rice even though it was cold.Besides the previously stated items the food was okay. I'd consider going back to try different combinations and give it a second chance. Edit: placed food at a table by the window and was told our table was elsewhere. This is my first time at this location, but not the first time I've had Mongolian BBQ. I came when they opened for lunch and the place was pretty clean and the food was well organized. It used to be a great place to eat. Now the staff can care less about the customers. It was filthy. There were many tables not cleaned the waitress even left their dirty rag and tray on a table for a long time. The bathrooms were frughteningly dirty. The cook made us wait a long time so he can take his slow sweet time cleaning the cooking area. Then we did finally sit down they brought out the soup which was cold. We had to ask them to refill our drinks. One of the cooks got upset with my husband for using two scoops of seasme cooking oil because it increases the flame but no one told him he couldn't do that nor was there a posting. we have been going to GK in modesto pretty regularly since it opened. but tonight will be the last time i patronize this business. we didn't want to go out tonight so my wife decided to order delivery from GK which is our first time through them, when our order arrived i was very disappointed with what we received, we ordered 3 dinners which arrived in a black plastic container which measured 7"x 4 3/4" x 1". we paid $46.23 to have this delivered and that was without any delivery charge, when i looked at the receipt it showed you are charged a fee for each item. now every time we go there it is all you can eat and it does not matter which items you put in your bowl and again ITS ALL YOU CAN EAT!!! i know very well you can not get all you can eat on a delivery order but really do they think that tiny container is acceptable? i remember seeing orders to go being filled by the employees in the past and it filled a large container like you receive at the Chinese restaurant, which is much more acceptable than what we received tonight. read more

I came to eat here yesterday (3/27/19) and even waited in the car 10 mins for them to open up at 11am because I have been here twice before and the noodles are really good. Where they are lacking is in customer service. I was in line to have my bowl of noodles cooked when I got some of the sauce on my hands so I went to the restroom to wash my hands as I go I do see a yellow cone (the ones they put up after they have cleaned the floor) it was not too near my path to the women's  walk way to the restroom so I kept walking with caution and even so I slipped, I tried to regain my footing but the liquid that was on the floor was not a water based liquid it was more oil based because I could not catch my footing and slipped and fell hard on my back and to top it off I hit the back of my heard on the corner of the wall behind me I got up carefully, no one saw me fall I continued to the restroom to clean up although I was already in pain, I came out to tell the lady at the front counter that there is a big spill and I had fell and hit my head, all she said "well isn't there a sign"  I said yes but the spill is big and super slippery I got no apology or anything she just went to tell the cook to clean it up, I don't know why she couldn't as she was not busy and he was cooking everyone's meals. Then my friend went to the restroom I told him to be very careful as it is super slippery and he noticed and said yea this is oil while he was in the restroom a mom with 2 smaller children went to the restroom as I looked up I saw her little boy fall on the spill , the mom looked around and just picked him up. When my friend was coming out of the restroom he saw the boy had fell and then told the lady at the counter again that a kid had fell she just said "well I already told him (the cook), I don't know". A  few minutes passed and a group of elderly women were coming in and it wasn't until then did I see her and the cook go to clean up the mess. I just could not believe the sore lack of people skills (never received any concern or at least a sorry ) and lack of safety when there is a spill of any kind you clean it asap! Not wait around for someone that you told to clean it especially when multiple have already fallen due to it. Those caution cones are to be put out only when you had already cleaned something up and its still slightly wet NOT when there is just a big puddle of liquid just laying there that no one wants to clean! Today I am super sore and having back, neck and head pain. This was all preventable and plain ridiculous, I am just glad if anything that it happened to me and not one of those elderly ladies because it could have been much worse for them if this happen to one of them. read more

good selection of ingredients, great service, eggrolls, soup and rice side dishes all for less than 8 dollars? what's not to like?

First off, I would like to say the food here is pretty good. They have a nice selection of toppings and meats. The cooks here are also very pleasant and recommends sauces and other things to add idled you're a complete newbie. My complaint lies in the waiting service. I came here with family on Veterans Day and the place is pretty busy. In the middle of our meal, I asked for our drinks to be refilled. After waiting for fifteen minutes, I figured she forgot about us and walked up to the counter to ask again. A customer from another table followed suit and just brought their glasses to be filled. I asked for the drinks and she barely looked at me and said give me second. I sat back down. At this point everyone's glasses in our table is empty. We had to wait another ten minutes and when she brought out the pitcher, she didn't apologize or anything. Since she was by herself, I would understand being short staffed and being overwhelmed but the very least thing you could do as a server is be nice and apologize especially since we had to ask twice and waited almost half an hour just to get drinks. I hope the business would address this because they could lose customers due to the crappy service. read more

This place used to be a lot better. We got there at 7pm today and all the ingredients were either missing, or wilted. When we got to the cooking end of the line, they had no jalapeños. We asked the cook and he said, they're all out. I then mentioned the counter top was greasy and sticky, he walked away as I was talking. I spoke to the manager and he told me every thing was there an hour ago. NEVER appologized. As though it were stupid of us to expect an open restaurant to be stocked with food. He dismissed us by telling me to use siracha (not the same flavor as jalapeños). Then I repeated, "Why are the counter tops dirty though?" No answer. After we ate one small bowl of our flavorless leftover garbage that cost about $10 a bowl, we tipped our waitress because it's not her fault the place sucks pig anus, and asked if it was new management. She said, "no". Surprised, due to how much better and enjoyable this place used to be, my only assessment is that the guy must hate his job. Along with the rude cooks. My husband, friends & myself have eaten here numerous times & have been satisfied with the food. Tonight we took our grandchildren--my whole perspective on this place has changed! The children spent most of their time, excitedly telling us about their day at school & their plans for the week-end & didn't spend that much time eating. When we asked for a take out box, I couldn't believe they said NO! I asked the waitress, REALLY?? -what are you going to do with it? "Throw it out". That makes a lot of sense!!! Very good food and service a quiet place but it has food cooked right in front of you very quickly.

Good food, but like other reviews, it is usually unkept and messy. The problem, however, is not with the cooks or waitstaff, but with the other customers who are inconsiderate and slop their food and mess around. Management is lacking and bares the responsibility due to lack of staff scheduled, especially during peak hours. 1-2 waitstaff and 2 cooks are simply not enough to host, cook, serve, cashier, AND clean. Until such time management either sees fit or changes hand, it will remain what it is: a good food at a decent price albeit messy and unclean restaurant/dive. read more

Horrible....guys...look around....it is filthy. ..the tables were all dirty, the whole restaurant was filthy and an employee started moping the floor with bleach....we couldn't stand the smell so I asked to moved to another table and another employee told me he couldn't move us cause he had too many people....and let's not forget that aaaaaalllllll the tables were filthy but empty.....after I payed $50 and complained to the manager who didn't do nothing....I'm about to leave with my family, the manager has the courage to come after me and tries to bribe me giving me a coupon cause he saw me writing this review....what???? This Mongolian grill is okay. Nothing different than others. Make sure to ask about kids special because they don't apply around the clock ONLY dinner. They have dinner and lunch dinner starts at 330 and if you arrive at 320 you will have to pay lunch prices like I experienced.. so make sure if you want dinner prices you arrive at 330! I've been here 4 times well because I like Mongolian noodles... not so much for various of the female cashier/waitresses that work here. Not once did any of them ask me or others for refills on drinks or if we needed anything on the 3 separate occasions I dinned here. They remained at the cash register with stale faces. On the 4th visit however, There was one male waiter DAN was on it with everyone in the restaurant. Asking about refills and if we needed anything on various occasions. Also cleaning tables as soon as people left to make space for new people... overall decent place for Mongolian noodles. read more

I went to this restaurant today for lunch with my preschool-aged son. When I inquired about a children's meal, I was told that they did not offer children's meals during lunch, only for dinner. A bit confused, I asked why and was it because they didn't usually have customers with children for lunch. The server assured me that children ate there for lunch but that parents must share with them. She didn't know why they didn't offer a child-sized portion other than that's the way the owner likes it. I asked her to please communicate with the owner that a children's-sized portion on the lunch menu would make it so that I felt comfortable coming back; otherwise I would, of course, choose to go to a restaurant that offers a meal at a portion and price for children. After some talking and explaining that my son and I have different tastes and dietary needs, couldn't share the same food, and we only wanted one bowls worth of food, we worked out something that would work. I put both of our food in one bowl, his on top and mine on the bottom. It would be cooked separately once I got to the grill. And I would not take anything to-go. With this understanding, I got a bowl, filled it, and waited in line to have it cooked. The man cooking, Ray, was a co-manager with the server. She and I had spoken with him about the meal and although he spoke rudely to both her and to me, he understood and agreed to cook the food separately. Once I got to the front of the line, he grabbed the bowl from my hand, and walked over to the grill. From there, he began to yell at me that he couldn't do it, he wasn't going to get written up over me and glared at me with extreme distaste. I looked at him, stunned and embarrassed, before then looking at the other customers behind me in line. They avoided my eyes or looked at me quickly before looking away as though they had seen this happen here before and just wanted to get there giant bowls of food to-go and leave. I was mortified. As I glanced at the filthy counters in front of me, thought about the fact that I had had to clean the backs of the chairs at our table because they were too sticky to touch, I regretted bringing my son there. Ray was starring at me, so I asked him to just put the chicken and noodles that were on top of the bowl on the grill and to please give me the rest of the bowl back to put a little sauce on it. He shook his head and acted disgusted as he did so. After having to stand there and be treated so rudely, I took the food to my table, took several deep breaths, and ate. The food tasted good. The server was very kind and I left a generous tip for both her and Ray. After this experience, I understand why people go this restaurant, and it is NOT for the service. The food was good and fresh, but the service was offensive. If you like the food enough to brave the service, more power to you. But if you prefer a pleasant dining experience, go somewhere else. read more

I've been here about 3 times since they recently opened. First of all even having been to a different mongolian bbq I had no idea what to do once entering, and I was not alone there were many others confused. Even asking the staff was to no avail as they all seemed clueless. On my second visit our waiter was talking at a specific table for what had to be 10-20 minutes. The cooks, though not unfriendly, don't seem eager to please. The rest of the staff was more often rude than not. Especially this last time I went there which was less than an hour ago, I even went through the hassle of creating a stupid yelp account. Regardless, I only went there tonight because my wife really wanted it. I am a picky person and do not like the noodles or vegetables. So i get a bowl full of meat which is nice but I like to eat it with something, rice. Now I will say that their rice isn't the greatest as others have mentioned on here before. But it is still alright. I asked before purchasing our to-go orders if I could get rice with mine and the help rudely answered with "it all comes with it". So after paying what amounts to more that an hour's worth of pre-tax work for our meals I went to stand in line. After getting them in a to-go box I asked the help if I could get an extra thing of rice, because I don't like noodles as mentioned and the small boxes of rice wouldn't be enough. She, in a quite rude demeanor, said it would cost me a dollar for a side of rice. Now I perhaps should've asked for a manager or argued with her, but wait I just paid nearly $20 for a meal and expect to get decent service I seriously should not have to do anything more than just ask. I also should note that this conflicts with what she had previously told me before, as everything was obviously not included in the price. Secondly, I must point out the value of the rice must be so little and they likely throw away much more than that every night. But for the sake of argument they value the side of rice at a dollar, now I don't have an MBA or any other business degree but it seems to me comping a customer a dollar's worth of a cheap side is well worth it for customer satisfaction and appreciation as well as to not lose a repeat customer over 1 dollar. See if they see any more business from me. I will not be continuing to go here, often rude often confused staff, over priced food, standing in long lines. No thanks! read more

I went to this place for the first time and it was very messy with food all over floor and grill didn't look clean. It looked like just a few young adults were working so I gave it the benefit of the doubt. SURE WISH I hadn't!! GROSS! I took one bite and was disgusted. I tried sending it back because I wasn't going to pay $7.20 for 3/4 cup of food, especially since I didn't eat it and they refused to take it back! I had to call the General Manager on the phone and talk to him. He refused to take back food and not charge me saying he couldn't waste food! He said he could talk to his "cooks" and have them make me another bowl. I said how is that not wasting food since you are willing to make me more food, that I am not going to eat either, and just not charge me for the little bit of food you made me to begin with? He just kept saying he couldn't waste food that like. Well, if you could even call it food. amazing food, delicious and fast. favorite place to eat within driving distance, and i am not one to have many favorite things. for those reviews with particular complaints... you make and dress your own food before handing it to the cook, so its as good as you decide it will be imo(try a sauce/selection you like? ha). too expensive? for all you can eat? you are silly but that is just my opinion i guess. this is the only place that has justified prices. sounds good any day of the year. best buffet in modesto. i also don't understand bad reviews from certain people who weren't allowed to break rules.. laughable read more
