At least our roof is more efficient and solar-ready... Anyway, I got just two quotes, and it was a very difficult choice as both seemed good. But ultimately I appreciated Tom and his consistent communication. He laid out the work in a straightforward and educational way and I felt that even though the price was higher, I would pay it for good customer service, a long warranty, and quality-controlled work that will HOPEFULLY last at least 50 years. We ended up also replacing the gutters, but the recommendations were all very reasonable. It was also very nice that Tom stopped by occasionally to review the work and follow up with us about it. The roof was replaced on just over two days, with the third day being very minor cleanup (hardly even heard anyone up there). My friend on his bike picked up a few nails/screws for us, but overall I think they were very thorough with their cleanup every day they were on the job (also our outdoor areas are quite a mess so I would imagine even the magnetic sweepers might not be able to navigate easily). I was pretty impressed. While we'll have to tighten our belts a bit, I would recommend Ark and working with Tom if you need roof work done. It was a very smooth, quick, and professional process.

They appeared to be working harder and faster than any other roofing crew I had seen, and they got the job done in 3 or 4 days instead of the typical 5. When I got a letter from my home insurance company stating that they would cancel me if I didn't get a new roof (the same thing has happened to most of my neighbors, I suspect), I called Alex Perez Roofing, plus two other companies for comparison. Alex himself came out, and he spent a long time talking to me and my partner about the job. He answered all of our questions. He didn't have a slick sales presentation like the other two roofing companies that we called. As a former roofer himself, he was more focused on explaining the dynamics and the work of the job, rather than trying to get us to agree to a a top-tier "premium roof package." Unsurprisingly, his bid came in lower than the other two companies I called. In an apples-to-apples comparison (50 year warranty, special venting at the top of the roof line) his company had the best value. His guys showed up on time, worked hard, were very polite, and left the job site clean. On the office side, Alex's staff kept me well-appraised on where we were in the process, and when invoices were due. When additional dry rot was discovered after the roof was pulled off, his office staff emailed me a comprehensive report and photos, and they had a lengthy phone conversation with me about it at my request, ensuring that all of my questions were answered. Alex also dropped by the job site regularly to check on things. The whole crew struck me as honest, regular working people just trying to get the job done, never trying to upsell me on any special packages, warranties, or guarantees. I would recommend them, or at least suggest that you call them out for a bid to compare them with what some of the bigger companies are offering.

Dan at ABD came to my house to provide an estimate for replacing my back deck. We wanted to demo…read morethe old deck and replace with a smaller 208sf deck. Dan was on time and very professional. Dan provided an onsite quote of $25,000. I asked if this included the permit. He said he doesn't always get permits, especially if the property is set back from a street where people can't see the work being performed. I asked about financing options and he had one of his lenders send me the application for financing, but after reading the fine print, I realized that the lender wanted to put a lien on my home to secure the loan. After Dan got back to his office he sent me a contract for the work but the contract didn't include a cost breakdown. I called Dan and told him that my county requires a permit for the job, and we need to hire a contractor to handle the drawings and permit process for us. Dan was not familiar with the permit process for our county and said he would have to make some calls. He said he would have to hire an architect for the drawings and verbally told me it would cost approximately $7,500. I asked if he had any other lenders that offer unsecured loans. He said he would talk to his finance dept. and back to me. After the call, I sent Dan a text letting him know that I would be contacting other contractors for quotes. Dan immediately responded with better unsecured loan option at 6.9% interest. I let Dan know that I would get back to him after reviewing other quotes. After meeting with other contractors we decided a cheaper way to complete this project would be to build a landing and staircase to the ground instead of a deck. I called Dan and he said he could build the staircase for $8,500 but permit with drawing would cost an additional $6,500. I asked him about the other lender he had mentioned before with the unsecured loan, and he said he would speak to his finance dept. and get back to me. That was the last time I heard from Dan and he never got back to me. ABD may have great reviews online, but I don't think people hear about customer's experiences who decide not to hire them. Just wanted people to be aware of their un-permitted work practices, their lenders that try to put a lien on your home and contracts with no price breakdown.
