We have a ten year old Volvo that accumulated a buttload of problems over the last few years. I had a spell of unemployment that kept us from doing regular maintenance. Finally took it in this week, and they did a great job. The total bill to fix everything was about what the car was worth, but they fixed only the things that were necessary for safe driving, and gave us a schedule for which other things to fix in order of urgency. We may have payed a little less with another garage, but those guys really know their foreign cars! One thing that gave me confidence in them is the enthusiasm they had for describing all the stuff that was wrong, how it worked, why they decided on the most urgent things, and gave tons of detailed explanations. I'm not exactly a gear-head, but I understood everything they said. They're clearly excited about the work they do! So, if you've got a European-built car, I'd highly recommend them. read more

But sometimes you just need a specialist, and this Scottish-named shop in the Asian district that works only on Swedish cars was just the ticket. Glasgow Automotive specializes in all things Volvo and is run by a father-and-son team (the Glasgows, no less) who take their job and their customer service seriously. I took my chunky 1991 Volvo 240 to these folks for years and years until it finally bit the dust. They were always very friendly, remembered who I was, explained everything to me when I didn't understand, and charged a very reasonable rate (much better than the place I used to take it). When I needed anything they couldn't do--like getting new tires--they gave me excellent recommendations that always turned out wonderfully. When it became apparent that my Volvo was going to need more repairs than it would cost to buy another one of comparable age, the Glasgow folks even helped me find a buyer who was willing to take it off my hands for the cost of repair and then some. I'm pretty sad that I don't have a car anymore and therefore probably won't get a chance to enjoy their tremendous service for quite some time. Don't take your old volvo here. Mike jr. doesn't want to work on it. He doesn't like to deal with rust. He doesn't want to think of creative ways to get your old Volvo working. He only wants to work on new Volvos where parts are easy to come by. There are several other independent Volvo specialists in the twin cites. You're better off taking your old Volvo there. read more

I have to say, I took my Volvo 240's here for years, and they were pretty well looked after. I can't say much for customer service though. Mike explained the nature of my car troubles well, but he also talked down to me and treated me like an idiot. It really sucks when you pay good money to people with specialized knowledge, and they treat you that way. Although they always did good work on my cars, I stopped coming here because of the attitude. I didn't do anything to deserve the condescension that was often waiting for me. Things were okay for awhile but it just got worse and worse over the years. After being a years-long loyal customer. It really got to me because I was the easiest person to deal with. I never complained about length of time for repairs, cost of repairs or when I got the "bad news" about unexpected work that needed to be done. Never. Luckily, a friend referred me to a semi-retired mechanic who knows foreign cars and putters in his garage. He did good work at a fair price for me without any extra attitude. I think Mike and his team are great mechanics who do good work. But his people skills need some polishing. I don't expect to be treated like a prince, but just some basic civility and respect are my minimal requirements for people who want my business. read more

I was previously a customer of Borton Volvo, but ended up switching to Glasgow after Borton closed their Minneapolis/Richfield shop. I'm really a fan of Glasgow, and would recommend it! I went in knowing I needed a new timing belt, but I was really impressed at how Mike and Michael went over the whole car with a fine-toothed comb, and found a number of issues and recommended maintenance items that Borton had never noticed or mentioned. The total for all that was at least 25% of the value of the car, so they helped me prioritize what to do right then and let me know how urgently I needed to address the other things. They're not cheap, but the timing belt was a bit less than I was quoted from Borton. And the shop is nothing to look at, but it's an auto shop. What can you expect? read more

Took our 2004 S-60 with a list of items to be worked on. First of all, they know their stuff. "No guessing this will fix it" They estimated $1,800.00 came in with tax under $1,600.00.. It was over $1,370 savings from dealership repair estimate with same list of repairs. They also fixed a check engine light that had been previously repaired FOUR times from local dealer who did not reattach protective cover correctly on lens cover causing short and engine lite to come on as soon as it rained or I went into a car wash causing me to return to the dealership again and again to hear" it was fixed". Glasgow Automotive Service was recommended by a friend and my high expectations were exceeded. While my 1997 Volvo 850R was in for A/C work, they checked the entire car, made excellent recommendations, honored the coupon, assured me the previous mechanics had taken very good care of my car, and cautioned me about getting my car repainted.
