It's voted to be one of the toughest 9 hole courses in America. Well, after a pint of Guinness watching Scheffler win the 2025 BMW, talking to the proprietor Tom and peeking out of the cute bar, to the finishing holes, we decided to tackle this reputed course. The afternoon 9 hole round cost $40 walking. Walking up to the first green we saw a coyote rambling through the fairways. Good or bad omen, we would find out. At least it was not freezing or blowing too bad. T boxes were uneven, hard to see, and a bit rough. Lots of trees to consider and huge patches of carryover sand. Bunkers were not manicured. It's easy to top your ball in some of the patched fringe or tree-lined fairways. Overall it had nice views of McLaren Park, the Cow Palace and Visitacion Valley below. But a bit more maintenance on the fringes wouldn't do it harm.

A little dusty right off the tee, but further down fairway is fine and the greens are great

This is a **gorgeous** golf course with a great "Every person" vibe. No golf polos or fancy golf club flexing here - just a perfect way to spend a casual, Sunday morning in beautiful SF Bay Area. Yeah, so the fairway is dusty in areas and not pristine, and there are no golf ball washing stands- but honestly, does it REALLY make a difference?!? The greens are well maintained and everyone is super civil and super nice. No pretensions, no aggressive players nipping at our heels. For a beginner or casual player this is a lovely course - a place to be outdoors, offline with family during quarantine. Booking online is super convenient, check-in is efficient by the affable and helpful Scott. And the bar is perfect - and like the course it truly embodies all that is wonderful about San Francisco.

    9 th green. Careful.

Best bar in SF golf. Mike makes a nice perfect Manhattan. Greens are in tremendous shape. Not for the weak of heart.

    8th hole. Looking good

I have been back numerous times since my first visit and have completely embraced this scruffy yet full bodied golf course as my home base. I read up on its history recently and all that Tom Hsieh has endured and want to thank you for not giving up on this little slice of peace. Ive watched this last year as it really began to flourish and now it fights with this water shortage I am humbled by your efforts. Tom has been quick to fix any problems and I owe him the most heart felt apology for my over zealous reviews. Now that I have gotten to know this place I understand that this is a labor of love for him and those who work hard to keep it going. I hope those who have given glen eagles a low review reconsider, read up on the history, go back a few times I believe you will see what everybody else who loves the place will see. I think it's time we reach out to Lee Trevino and get him to set the record straight. Cheers Tom Thank you got your tireless efforts, your dedication has humbled me and made me av true supporter

Nice host gives you tips before you start. The course is tough for a beginner (me) but how else are you going to learn?

My girlfriend and I came out to this course for the first time and were welcomed warmly. Richie was the manager / starter for the course and was incredibly professional and knowledgeable. One of the best starters I've had at a golf course. Great green management and landscaping is kept up.

    Teeing off, peaceful views

Without getting muni funds, Gleneagles has kept up a fun and challenging 9 hole course. I've played here 5 times or so during the pandemic rain or shine, here's what's resonating for me: - Interesting slopes throughout the course, adding a little challenge with few flat lies. Bombing downhill on hole 3 and climbing back up on hole 9 are particularly memorable. - Narrow fairways - lined with beautiful trees, some dry patches. - I repeat. Don't miss the fairway even if it builds character. - Nice greens. The owner and community sank quite a bit of $$$,$$$ and time to keep these nice. - Enjoy the views. Kind of like a beautiful park, don't expect a country club. - Really empty on weekdays, fills up on weekends. - Friendly locals - After you play 9, it's a nice discounted rate to do the full 18 - Food and drink are light, but enjoy a hot dog and a beer or Gatorade after your workout. I had heard the pub was pretty nice pre-Covid. Hope you have a great time out there & thanks Gleneagles team

Bashing through the rough, on a mud-dy, sul-len day... O'er the fields we go, Crying all the way! Okay, it wasn't THAT bad, but I was told I was not allowed to demonstrate any drama on the course, so it's comin' out here! This course plays like the "Western--the Good, the Bad and The Ugly". It is a strange juxtaposition of epic with horrendous. The Good. It's cheap. C'mon--green fees of $25 for 9 holes ($28 for another go-around for a total of 18 butt-spankin' holes), even less with a resident card/senior discount?!! The guests who come here are more laid back and not persnickety about course rules--Phhfftsheah! The course manager, Brandon, is cool--he told us as we walked off to "do our part and water the trees frequently!" The bar is REALLY cool with inexpensive drinks. The manager has allocated resources to maintaining the highest priority areas of the course--greens, parts of fairways you are supposed to reach with each stroke (think green islands) and Tee Offs. The Bad. The course is really is a booger at places! The fairways are narrow and break steeply so that your ball will roll to one side. The rough is ball ingesting and nigh impossible to search through. There are parts that are muddy that will soil your buggy, shoes, and club (and pants if you send a shot into the rough). The Tee-offs are inconsistently marked and sometimes located in counter-intuitive places. We tee'd off one hole, walked 20 yards and discovered the real tee off for it... Weird. The Ugly. The aeration holes and patching mesh on the green kicks and skews the putt like a pinball machine flapper. The brown patches of fairway (which I visited often in my noobness) are brutal because there is.no.green.grass for your next shot. My kind uncle kept reminding me I could move the ball in a one foot radius 'for improvement'... Let's review my options: how about that glob of mud, or sundried weed, maybe that rock perch...? And, just when you thought you made it home on the 9th, the green there is a wicked ski-slope--positioned strategically as entertainment for those who have gone before to heckle you as the ball is putted haplessly from one end of the green to the other. All said, it is a low-key place for me to bash the ball around without too much recourse :) For that, I am a fan--4 stars!

Ask the Community - Gleneagles Golf Course

    Can I bring my dog?

I was curious about this as well so I called and asked to which they responded "ABSOLUTELY NOT". Totally understand why some courses are against dogs but found it interesting for a 9 hole like Gleneagles to be so against it.

This was my first time playing the course in like 8 years, and I forgot how beautiful this course is. The course itself is on the tougher side, but fun for all skill levels. It definitely challenges all different parts of your game. Even with the rain, the course drained pretty well. Bunkers were in a good shape (I'd know, I hit into plenty of them lol) Something I never experienced before in all the years playing golf was that I had to share a cart with a random player. I got paired with a group of 3, so I ended up sharing a cart with the 3rd. Luckily I'm comfortable enough to do this and the guys I played with were fun. It's something to think about if you are a single, that you might have to share a cart with a stranger. If that's not your thing, I'd prolly walk with a push cart. It's a hilly course but it's a good walk. Pace of play is a bit slow (expected on the weekends) so plan for a 5+ hour round. They had some issues with the conditions of the greens, which is much better now than it was back in the fall but at the time of writing this, they are offering a 15% off green fees, which is notated on their booking website. Recently they made a change to their parking lot, where you have to pay ($3/hr or $15/all day). On top of the green fee, you'll have to pay $15 just to park. I get it's to support the Presidio but with the green fees the prices they are I feel like that's plenty of support. Not a deal breaker but definitely carpool if you can do your group can save some cash for drinks at the turn instead. Overall, as I try to play every course in the Bay Area, price aside, is easily one of the most beautiful public courses you'll find in the Bay Area. Definitely will be playing again.

Very rare for a muni course to be given these specs. So now this ain't your basic muni course anymore, it is now more premium...in greenkeeping, in price and demand to play. This was my first time playing on SF soil and I play almost weekly. I've played a few spots in Monterey, Half Moon Bay and this course has visually the same terrain, with coastal wet mornings and cypress trees all over. Now this course has no ocean views, but Lake Merced is visible from a few holes. I was enamored with the cypress tree lined fairways and the beautifully maintained grass all over. Now with all this high level groundskeeping, though beautiful is also where all the challenge is here. Because this course is fairly flat, they're using the cut of the grass to be the challenge or the penalty. The rough cuts here are borderline insane. A good challenge for a pro/near scratch golfer but very penalizing and difficult for an average to high handicapper. A 3 inch rough doesn't sound too bad, but it is long enough that if your ball touches this rough it will 1) be hard to find, unless you are on top of it; 2) lose any roll/distance as once in this rough, the ball will catch and stop, giving you a longer distance for your next shot; 3) it is hard to make a connection in this rough so that next shot will usually not be flush/ideal. So the basic gist of this place is 'stay away from the rough'. But for an average golfer that is just so improbable. Even a nice shot to a green that may miss just by a couple of feet could easily find this rough. And to be that close and to have a very difficult shot as a result, is just too much for me to swallow. Just took the fun out of the game...for me. So a tad too difficult for me, also pricier than what I could do on a weekly basis. $150 to walk on a weekend. My regular golf buds and I usually play much performance friendly courses for about $70ish. So this is definitely more of a special occasion type place. I still want to come back someday and see how I fare now that I know how things roll...or more accurately how they don't.

The Hispanic male employee I interacted with was unfriendly, unapproachable, and unable or unwilling to answer even basic questions, repeatedly telling me to contact sales. While I understand that sales handles bookings, I expected someone who works at the venue to be able to provide some level of assistance or information. Unfortunately, his attitude remained the same during the event. Several things that had been requested were not set up as discussed, and the overall atmosphere felt unwelcoming. What upset me most was that some of my guests arrived carrying water bottles, and this employee openly told me, in front of my guests, that he would kick us out if he sees outside drinks again. I found this incredibly embarrassing, unprofessional, and completely inappropriate. The experience became so uncomfortable that many of my guests left early. For what was supposed to be a special occasion, the service and treatment we received fell far below expectations. Considering the amount spent, I expected professionalism, hospitality, and a welcoming environment. Unfortunately, we received the opposite. I would not host another event here, nor would I recommend this venue to others looking for a place to celebrate an important occasion.

Combined with the nice weather, the course is dry and playing faster than normal. I wish they'd maintain the course like this year round because if the greens were as a good as they were this past weekend, it'd be one of the best deals for public golf in the Bay Area. Plus you can't beat the views on a clear day of the Golden Gate Bridge. We came here this past Sunday without a tee time and were able to get 2some out with minimal wait. Making a tee time in advance is definitely recommended but if you are looking for a last minute way to get out to the course, walking on is possible. Since it was a hot day, we decided to get a power cart which is $50 for two people. It's a cart-path only course, which is a bummer but since it doesn't typically drain well, it makes sense. $50 for a cart is kinda steep considering the carts are standard and don't provide any type of GPS or anything. The course is very hilly, so even with a push cart, it can be a strenuous walk.
