I'm not a huge chocolate fan but man-o-man - this place rocks chocolate and caramel! We happen to find them at the San Mateo Farmer's Market on Saturday and were given a generous samples of several items. The caramels are out of this world good - very balanced and no corn syrup. Very clean ingredients. You can tell the owner takes care with his products. Interestingly they use tapioca starch in these - so gluten free in anything that I say here We also got to sample their signature bar which is a a thin layer of crisp English Toffee topped with a layer of soft caramel all covered in dark - chocolate. The flavors and textures just bounce on the tongue and make excite the palate. I was shocked on how delicious this was...even had to buy a couple to take home for my dear family to try. The dark chocolate squares with caramel were also quite compelling - they have them plain and salted. I spied caramel sauce, and some gorgeous shiny truffles with all sorts of interesting flavor combinations. They also offered a vegan assortment as well. Prices are very reasonable and a few bites are so satisfying..no need to binge - just savor a few small bites and you will be satiated. read more

Michael Hohenthal handcrafts unique, high quality chocolates and sells them at some local farmers' markets (I've only bought some at the College of San Mateo Farmers' Market on Saturdays between 9am-1pm), and they're available at special stores and online. His kitchen is the space where Nancy's Fancies used to be (a favorite closed bakery of many Yelpers - we used to buy her delicious cakes too). Some of his chocolates are vegan, and clearly the guy has a passion for chocolate and making interesting flavor combinations. They aren't cheap, but they are unusual. Some varieties include: Earl Grey Tea with Orange Blossoms, Raspberries, Pine Nut, Pistachio, Anise Seed with Ouzo, Lemon, Grand Marnier and Orange Essence, Bing Cherry, Apricot, Sweet Basil Infused Truffle in Milk Chocolate, Lemon Cinnamon Infused Truffle in White Chocolate, Ouzo-Toasted Anise Seed Infused Truffle in Dark Chocolate, and Blood Orange pressed Extra Virgin Olive Oil infused into Dark Chocolate. Stopped by this Chocolatier shop. You cannot buy from here. Michael, the owner makes his chocolates here. I open the side door that's says 'go to Chocolate.' The person inside(Michael) sees me and says, can I help you? I then ask where can I buy chocolate? He proceeds to tell me that he makes it there and you can buy chocolate at farmers markets and certain stores. I told him on the yelp page it looks like you can buy from this location and he asks me to show him. After he checks out his yelp page he then walks me over to his shelf of chocolates and tells me, 'I don't normally do this but what would you like?' He gives me the run down. I buy a sample box and some chocolate toffee. All were great and I will buy more in the future. He is a down to earth guy. Glad he didn't turn me away. read more

She has been raving for months about how good their chocolate is. She is an expert on the subject and never doubted her even for a minute. And last night she once again proved me right. She was kind enough to bring my wife and me a box of English toffee. A thin layer of crisp English Toffee topped with a layer of soft caramel all covered in dark chocolate. This chocolate is like crack and is out of this world addicting. After dinner we decided to have a piece for dessert and the large box filled with kick ass chocolate squares. I used to work at the CSM farmers market on Saturdays...and I met Michael when a friend asked me to pick up some Go To Chocolate signature chocolate bars for her...They are SO GOOD! It has a layer of toffee and caramel in it and, of course, is covered in dark chocolate...it is SO tasty! Just the right amount of crunch with sweet and chocolate...I can eat one all by myself in a single sitting! One time, they were giving away samples...whole chocolates! and cut up pieces of their Go To Chocolate bar...YUM! I like the assortment in boxes that they have. They also make their own marshmellows for Easter. I got a bag of chocolate chips from them one time...and attached to the special packaging was a recipe for hot chocolate. I tried it, it was good, but I liked just eating the chips plain. The Go To Chocolate bar is packaged in paper and wrapped in twine, so it's recycle friendly. Michael is also very friendly. Best treat I've ever had in my life! Hands down! The Go To Chocolate Salted Bites are my fave. The sweet, soft mix of caramel with crunchy toffee is the perfect texture pairing, followed by the hint of sea salt that sits on the outside of the chocolate exterior. I've never encountered another chocolate treat like it. The only negative is that I can't go to a shop and buy them any time that's convenient, but at least I can get them online. Go To Chocolate is amazing! I stumbled across this place on yelp when looking for a unique chocolate shop and ordered the Go To Chocolate bar online to try. The next day, I couldn't wait and emailed the owner Michael to see if I could place an order of 45 of their famous Go To Chocolate Bars. Since my party was in a few days, he mentioned he could have it ready before the weekend. I went to his store where they make the chocolates and he was so nice!! (He gave me my Go To Chocolate Bar I ordered online along with 50 cents back!) Michael makes the chocolate and packages them himself. I met his daughter that day and she was stamping papers and thought what a cute team! He has a passion for making great chocolate! He let me try all the chocolates and I ended up buying almost everything. One of my favorites is their Dark Chocolate Enrobed Caramels (Box of 4). They are cute as they were individually wrapped in red paper in a clear box. The caramel is really soft (unlike See's where the caramel is a bit harder) The chocolate melts in your mouth! The English Toffee is good too. I also bought their Dark Chocolate Vegan Collection for my sister and she loved it! I bought my mom a gift set which had an assortment of different chocolates with ginger, raspberry, etc. My mom's a chocolate lover - it's because of her I eat chocolate. I'm a chocolate snob and would have to say that Go To Chocolate is gourmet chocolate and it's definitely worth a try. I've only seen 'Go To Chocolate' at the San Carlos Farmers Market. I had some samples of the chocolates and they were really good. The chocolate covered candied orange peels were really impressive. Unfortunately, these are really expensive. Outta my price range. $18 for a small tin. I ended up just buying a chocolate soda since I could afford it. Our family waits patiently every year for the orange peel because it's just so good. Went to the San Mateo Farmer's Market today, and dropped by the Go To Chocolate booth. Along with his selection of sauces, toffees, and truffles, Michael was also selling his gelato bars. I bought each of my kids one. We were eating them next to the booth, but with the sun shining the kids wanted to eat them under Go To's booth so the gelato won't melt. Other people passed by, saw the kids eating the bars, and the bought some themselves. Nice chocolate-ty taste without being sweet. The bars contained marshmallows made by Michael. Sooooooooooooooooooooo delicious! My boss gave me a box of these chocolates for Christmas and I can't remember the last time I tasted such quality chocolates! You can taste the quality of cocoa in these chocolates. The chocolate is so rich in a good way. I love the milk chocolate and white chocolate ones. Go To Chocolates are absolutely delicious in every way. The finest ingredients and obvious care and love go into making each one. I can definitively state that I have not tasted better chocolate anywhere else. Micheal is a wonderful chocolatier and an amazing and kind person. He will patiently explain to you all the unique aspects of his chocolate or talk to you about just about anything. I love that I have gotten to meet his family just by virtue of buying (probably too much) chocolate from him. I definitely recommend the Go To Chocolate bar as a good place to start (and a favorite to return to) if you are sampling his chocolates; though you honestly can't go wrong with anything. I bought a couple of boxes of Rocky Road, a couple of go to toffee bars, their Mediterranean Fusion collection and another 4 piece gift box at the Half Moon Bay Farmers Market a few saturdays ago. Most of these items, I've given to friends (souvenirs of my most recent road trip). I've gotten fantastic responses. I only had one of the boxes of Rocky Road for myself and I don't know why it's taken me so long to open it up and dig in. Two days later, I'm done - it's a pretty big box - I'm guessing at least 12 oz of chocolates. Now it's all gone, I couldn't make it last! I should've suspected they'd be good. I should've bought more, or I should'n't have given my chocolates away. I bought the chocolates from a woman (Michael's wife, I'd guess) and she knew what farms the fruits for their chocolates come from. The naked caramels are soft, melt in your mouth buttery but the salted caramels are my favorite. Then we opened up the big box of assorted chocolates and they were at once beautiful and delicious; the fig walnut and butter cinnamon were the first to be sampled and now we are saving the rest for a special occasion...... that just arrived! I walk by this little stand (at the Heart of Farmer's Market San Francisco) which displays these beautifully packaged chocolates, and when I don't have at least $5 to spend on their smaller almond bark, I cry a little. I was introduced to Go To Chocolate by a client and what a great recommendation. Michael was very helpful and his confections added to the success of our daughter's Red Egg and Ginger party. After discussions and brainstorming, he ended up creating a half chocolate egg shaped delight with a ginger infused center. This is going to be AMAZING!!!! that is exactly what goes through my head every Wednesday as I begin my brisk walk to the Heart of the city farmer's market. Why is it going to be amazing international super bert? well of course cause the chocolate guy is going to be there!!!! I had never heard of Go To Chocolate, but was quickly drawn to his booth almost by accident. We had recently moved back to SF and were on a little stroll through the market when we began to smell the familiar caramel, buttery smell of fresh made kettle corn. I might have mentioned before that my current lover is a complete fan of popcorn, and honestly the teaser sized bag of kettle corn is so delicious....I digress. The smell of the kettle corn got us walking back to the street but it was the silly pictures of chocolates performing on stage that got us to stop and look. Michael was gearing up for the winter holiday season and had some of his best treats out for display. After tasting some of his 'chips' we were sold and quickly dropped $30 on chocolate chips and artisan bars from Peru and of course, now that she had forgotten about kettle corn, a big box of almond brittle. We have gone back now religiously since last November. NO BS. On a side note Michael is awesome. We had an instance where we needed a big gift box and he had just run out. He asked us to come to his workshop and he sorted us out. But here is the cool thing.....he had finished packaging the box for us, then he proceeded to describe the different chocolates, then he had us taste of few of them. This chocolate is AMAZING!!! There aren't many chocolates I can say taste as good as these... maybe Cocoa Bella chocolates in SF... that might be it though and they are far away from where I live. The best thing is the Goto Chocolate Bar... it is a dark chocolate bar with caramel and english toffee. It is so rich and decadent. The caramel is not hard but soft and creamy. I would get a bar as a special treat to myself every so often.
