Sometimes, you don't need vegetables during dinner. Had to order the hamachi carpaccio, unagi meshi, and green tea creme brulee as per usual, but the Nikomi hamburg was a pleasant surprise! The flavor profile is deeply reminiscent of a HK pork chop baked rice if juicy pork meatballs were used. The service is always friendly here and our food came out quickly! My only minor gripe was the pacing as we had 3 dishes on our small square table at one point in the meal. I understand though, since they clearly had a busy night ahead as the restaurant filled up quickly after 7:30 PM. Ambience is kind of loud due to the chatter and closely spaced tables. Today, to celebrate my aunt's 60th birthday, we came to a restaurant that they used to visit often. Since it's a Japanese restaurant, the hostess immediately led us to the tatami seating area. My aunt asked if we could sit at a regular table instead, and the hostess asked whether we had any medical reason. I felt offended at that moment, and I also believe it's inappropriate and potentially unlawful to ask that kind of question. On top of that, while we were still eating, they brought us the bill halfway through the meal. Even though we understand there is a 90-minute dining limit, the whole experience made us feel like they were trying to rush us out. Came by for dinner the other night and it was a tasty experience. Parking is plentiful in the private strip mall and/or on nearby residential streets. Our reserved table was ready upon arrival. Dining is available on the traditional mats or at a table. Started off with the grilled beef tongue which was ok. Felt that it was rather over-grilled and super chewy...bummer. Moved on to the tempura maitake mushrooms and they were excellent. Lightly fried and served with a choice of tempura sauce, matcha salt and/or radish. The seafood pizza was quite tasty too. The unagi clay pot rice was gigantic and featured tons of unagi. We'd been here years ago and decided to come back with another couple (4 of us) and had a reservation for 6pm. We were seated quickly in one of those tatami type tables, though not in private room. It wasn't too loud despite it being quite full. In addition to what's pictured, we ordered some sashimi, carpaccio, and some tempura. Everything was tasty, with my favorites being the blue fin tuna sashimi, hamachi carpaccio, and pork clay pot rice. The fish was very fresh and while the ahi sashimi let the fish speak for itself (it was great), the carpaccio was nicely seasoned. The black cod was also very good, but there just wasn't a lot of it. The pizza and udon noodles were the dishes that were just OK, relatively speaking. Those I probably wouldn't order again, not because they were bad or didn't taste good, but there are other things I'd like to try that are probably more special and to my taste. The service was attentive and the food came pretty quickly. The only less than ideal thing was you're limited to only 90 minutes at your table. So if you're wanting to leisurely order some things, see how full you are or how much you like the item, then order some more in more than a couple of rounds. . .or if you want to really catch up with friends you haven't seen for awhile. . .then this isn't ideal if you can't do that within the 90 minute timeframe. Because they will tell you your time is up and you have to leave, which can seem abrupt. The clue should have been when they said "last call for ordering" and it was just a little past 7pm when they wouldn't have been closing, but I didn't clue into it. I really don't know if this is spelled out clearly when you make a reservation or check in for your reservation, but if not, I'd suggest it be communicated just to avoid the feeling that you're being unexpectedly asked to leave. We made a reservation for dinner for 4 on Friday and were promptly seated at one of the tatami tables when we arrived at 6pm. (Good that I was wearing slip on shoes.) They had a pretty extensive online menu and some specials on a printed menu. We started with the hamachi carpaccio and bluefin fatty tuna sashimi. Both were high quality, fresh and delicious. The black cod with plum sauce was well executed and tasty. The unagi yanagawa pizza had quite a unique taste and texture. It's been many years since I had a Japanese style pizza at Gochi. It made me feel nostalgic for the days bringing my daughter here when she was little. The clay pot rice with bbq sliced pork was scrumptious with good meat to rice ratio. I loved the crispy rice at the bottom. It would have been perfect if it wasn't so oily. The yaki udon was ok, but a bit oily as well. The tempura lotus roots sandwiched with shrimp had a light batter and was not bad with the sauce. Service was attentive, but a bit rushy. They're pretty strict with their 90-min seating rule. This place is always crowded, especially during the weekend. We came early during the week night and there was no wait! Service is great. They have plenty of waiters/waitresses working. Once we ordered, the food came out fast. Out of all the dishes we ordered, the Hamachi Carpaccio, Asari Sakamushi, Yaki Onigiri, Unagi Pizza and the Grilled Duck Breasts dishes are delicious and stand out. The fried oysters is so-so since the crust is too thick and not light enough. The sea bass special isn't as good as other places as they pan-fried the outside first rather than directly grilling it. The coating is so much that we couldn't taste the fish. IMHO, Tanto's fried oysters and fish (black cod) dishes are better. What a great little Japanese tapas place. I went here twice in a month after discovering it and absolutely love it. They have some traditional tables as well as some seating, which requires you to take off your shoes and sit on the floor. Most of the items are meant to be shared, and they are all delicious. My husband and I visited the mountain view location a few years back and recently we celebrated a birthday at this location. Our large party made a reservation beforehand and were seated inside one of their rooms. We had to place orders before arriving and the food were ready shortly after we sat down. The host seemed very irritable but the rest of the staff was friendly. My husband and I got the hotate uni, agedashi tofu, and salmon chazuke. All dishes were tasty and my husband said the tofu here is in his top two favorites. The chazuke was perfect comfort food especially with the wasabi. The hotate was delicious but thin so it felt like very little for the price. Overall, they were all delicious but a bit pricey for the amount given. A most refreshing appetizer, crunchy in the mouth with just the right tanginess. Hotate Uni - seared scallops topped with Uni and drizzled with a yuzu-truffle oil. Perfectly seared Scallops and buttery soft Uni, touched with a hint of yuzu and truffle oil. Melt in your mouth rounds of deliciousness. Maitaki Tenpura - if you like mushrooms and tempura, then this is the crispy, juicy combination you need to try. Comes with dipping sauce, grated radish and a dab of ginger. Kani Tama - this was the one disappointing dish. Not that it didn't taste savory, but for its lack of crab pieces. In fact, it would be more accurate to call this mushroom omelette. Kurobuta Katsu - pork cutlet pounded thin and then deep fried. Crispy and not dry, we preferred the traditional katsu dipping sauce. Hiyashi Somen - Japanese vermicelli noodles served cold with dashi sauce. Refreshing. Lychee Granuta - lychee shaved ice, a mist refreshing ending to a very good dinner. My absolute favorite local restaurant. It's small, and very popular so I recommend a reservation if you can grab one. But the food is excellent and there's a huge variety of options, including specials that rotate regularly. My favorites include the beef tongue, the uni clay pot rice, and the crab pizza. But I've yet to have a dish that I didn't like! I take my family and friends visiting here often. The servers are so fun too! We ordered a bottle of sake once and one server taught us a fun drinking game with the bottle cap. They're pretty attentive and helpful overall. Do not go! They do not respect their customer. I went there with my wife at round 6pm for diner. I wanted to sit down while my wife finished shopping next door. I was told by the host that they sit the guests only when the entire group arrived. There were plenty of available tables around. Not very welcoming but ok I guess. For the price you can do better in sunnyvale or MV. Got a kaki fry ...half the dish was shredded cabbage, other half was the 5 oysters. For almost $20 I would have expected more than $4 per oyster per person. And since half the dish was cabbage I figured it was a salad-like dish...but with no dressing except a dab of mustard-wasabi it's not something you'll want to eat unless you want to graze on plain cabbage. Fortunately, we had the reservation so we just went inside and we got seated immediately. The vibe of the restaurant is not too loud easy to have a conversation. The service was so quick and they asked if we had any dietary restrictions or allergies. I've noticed once they ask if there is any allergies, they tend to be a pretty good restaurant. Having grown up in the bay, Gochi was always my go-to spot to celebrate a special occasion. It's quaint and perfect for small, intimate dinners. I'll preface this by saying that the restaurant is almost always packed - by 5:30, it's not uncommon to see a few people waiting outside for doors to open to grab a table. If you choose to coke without a reservation (which I would HIGHLY recommend), come as early as you can or you will wait - or even be turned away. I've been to Gochi countless times, but the one thing I consider a "must order" is their claypot rice - specifically their unagi or anago meshi. I recommend to always go larger on this order: even with ordering 3 other tapas, my partner and I pretty comfortably finished a medium despite the menu stating it was good for 4 people. The rice is super flavorful with crispy flakes of rice contrasted with rich, fluffy eel... it honestly has my vote for the best claypot rice I've had to date. Get it with dashi to enjoy it the dish as chazuke, a perfect finisher for the meal.. and don't forget to try their rice seasoning on the table for ever more variety in flavors! Other cool things to try include their carpaccios, Japanese fusion pizzas, and their rotating specials! My go-tos include the kani cream korokke, hamachi carpaccio, and hokkai pizza, but everything tastes good. Just watch out for your budget, because these small tapas add up quick if you're not careful! Wish I read more of the reviews before I went here to celebrate my birthday! The food was great, but it felt like the staff was rushing us to leave even when we were only at the restaurant for 40 minutes at that time and were quick with ordering and eating the food. They had signs that said the maximum amount of time they allow you to be seated there is 2 hours and we left at 1.2 because we had to order more since it wasn't as filling as we originally thought. Additionally, if you brought your own cake, you have to pay $2 per person to eat that cake. Due to the rushed service, I wouldn't recommend coming here for a special occasion, but any other time would be great. For the food, I especially enjoyed the monk fish liver and the salmon clay pot. On the other hand, the beef tongue was not seasoned evenly (one piece would have more salt than the other), but it was cooked well. The salmon rice ball was not good. The service was great and food was delicious. The steak was juicy and cooked perfectly, the sauce they had went so well. The yaki onigiri was good but I would've liked it if the tuna was inside the onigiri instead of just on top, but that's just my preference. I went in with my husband and daughter to celebrate our 10-year anniversary. The food quality has gone down compared to many years ago. I ordered an ume whisky for myself to enjoy, but the drink tasted like plain water. I told two different servers that something was wrong with the drink, but they brushed me off and ignored my concern. The staff kept asking and questioning me who I talked to, which phone number and until I gave him the confirmation, he said that I should wait because I'm not on the waitlist. What a delicious spot for Japanese tapas! We stopped by on a Friday evening for dinner. Surprisingly, it wasn't too crowded and we were able to be seated without a wait. The garlic-ginger ponzu and garlic oil drizzle playfully tickled my mouth with umami. The hamachi (yellowtail) has a firm, fresh texture but quite a noticeable fishy aftertaste. Hotate Uni (4/5): These scallops might make you go into credit card debt (each one is 6$) but your tastebuds will be in raw shellfish heaven! The scallops are oh so bouncy, sweet, and fleshy. Then the charred and smoky uni on top melts in your mouth like a briny butter to go with the scallop. The yuzu truffle oil just further punches your mouth with umami! Unagi Meshi (5/5): Wow this dish is amazing and was by far our favorite one! The sizzling hot clay pot crisps up the rice on the bottom for the perfect textural contrast to the rich, luxurious unagi. This eel meat just dissolves in your mouth for a harmonious concoction of crispiness and savoriness like none I've experienced before. If you only get one thing, I recommend this one! The interior feels very traditional, maybe even approaching a bit outdated. There's lots of parking in the sleepy plaza it's located in as well. Delicious Japanese food! We had a work lunch here and Gochi was able to accommodate our group of 12 with a reservation. We all sat together in a private booth with tatami seating. Really enjoyed this experience. We were able to get privacy, feel cozy with each other and have enough space. Please note that with tatami seating you will have to take your shoes off. I split the sake oyako meshi with dashi broth and salmon aburi carpaccio with a coworker. Both were just wonderful. We both ended up being pretty full with these two items. The clay pot rice was so flavorful and delicious. Love the crispy/slightly charred bottom. I highly recommend adding the dashi broth. The salmon carpaccio was fresh and a great appetizer. The only dish I think I would get again is the unagi meshi. Large portions of eel and crispy rice is hard to beat. However, the pizza I get was supposed to be experimental but we couldn't taste any of the seafood supposedly in it and was just too heavy on the cheese flavor. It was also greasy which isn't something usually experienced with Japanese food. The hamachi carpaccio had good flavor if you chose a piece on the side with less soy sauce. But if you eat from the side doused in sauce, it's much too salty and you lose the flavor of the hamachi :( I do think the service was great and ambiance was a nice experience but for the price and food we got, I don't think I would return unfortunately. read more

Food is 4 stars, but SLOW service is why would would not come back to this Cupertino one. Mountain View one seems to have better/faster service. Went in for our 5:30pm reservation, got seated immediately. But didn't get someone to take our order until 6pm. Not one person came by to check on us or offered water. We finally flagged someone down to let them now that: "we're ready to order". Our experience was not unique as we saw other tables struggling to get order taken. One table walked back to the front desk to tell them to come take order. Food was all just OK. Our favorite was the udon and clay pot. The rest were just average. Def would not recommend or come back to the Cupertino one. But we would give Mountain View one another try. read more
