    Best egg rolls eva
    Tia S.

I absolutely love the egg rolls here. I've gotten the pancit a few times, but the eggs rolls keep me coming back. I am able to pop them one after another until I realize I've eaten a whole box for myself. This is not somewhere I would dine in.. I only do call in orders...the dining area does not look appealing enough to eat in. Also, everytime I come in, the staff seems a little confused and overwhelmed.

Getting a nice surprise of a Filipino sit-down restaurant being so close to our hotel, we made it a point to visit for dinner during our short trip to Houston. It was our last night in Houston visiting our nephew, so suggested a Filipino restaurant close to our hotel, Houston Medical Center, and Rice University. Like most Filipino restaurants, Godo's Restaurant serves early breakfast so are open at 7 am, but close later at 7pm, allowing of an early dinner. We got there around 5:10pm. Since our nephew had to head back to campus, we ended up placing an order, half to go (for our nephew), half to dine-in. The half to go portion was done pretty quickly and packaged beautifully. My wife and I took our time with our dine-in meal. -- Hot Meal ($6.99) - basically a rice bowl, with a choice of protein. We chose lechon kawali, and the generous portions looked really good. -- Egg rolls ($17.99 for fifty) - comes in multiples of 25. We got 50, and split it between us. They are cut smaller in size than other places, but the price reflects that. That being said, I though the filling was very bland and too finely ground meat...it could have been any quality of meat, and didn't care for the mouthfeel. They were super crispy though, and came with the typical chilli sauce that greatly helped. For us: -- Whole bangus sinigang ($14.95) - this was made to order so took a while, but it was a beautiful dish. A whole plum tomato was used, along with generous amount of green beans and cabbage. The broth was really tasty, and not greasy at all since seafood was used. The fish was relatively boneless, but there really weren't too many meaty pieces...it was a smaller fish used, and I had to carefully pick away the inedible (for me) pieces. -- Pancit ($12.95) - wife asked for a mix of Bihon (rice noodle like what's used in Pho) and Canton (Chinese style lo mein). It's made to order, so her request of no fish sauce was granted. It's a very generous portion...we didn't order rice, so this became our side dish and the two of us was only able to finish half. -- stick of pork bbq x 2 ($2.50 each, though charged $6.50 for both) - pork shoulder, with the fat, glazed in a banana ketchup sauce and cooked over an open flame. It was good, better than most renditions we've tried in California...and definitely a better price. -- halo-halo ($5.99) - thought this was a steal at that price. Very pretty to look at, needs to be eaten slowly. Again, this was handmade when ordered. Did my best to finish a little more than half. All the restaurant chefs and servers were very nice, making sure we were happy. While we were waiting and eating, we were pleasantly surprised how busy they were through phone orders for pick-up. The phone was constantly ringing, and doctors/nurses from the nearby hospitals were coming in to get their Filipino dishes for them and their friends. The prices are very reasonable, especially since everything was made when ordered. We got a ton of really good food, and even with tip, the total didn't tip ninety bucks. There is also a small bakery where you can pick up Filipino favorites. But unlike some combo grocery/restaurant, Godo's is classified as a food/drink establishment for credit card purposes (instead of a grocery store)...so ended up using the right card after all.

Went to Godo since it was a short walk from my hotel. Got the Tocino Breakfast and the Lumpi Shanghai. The place isn't the most glamorous, but the service was fast and they were very helpful. The Tocino was kind of dry, but still tasty. That was way too much delicious lumpia for me. I took some with me to the plane to eat on the way home!

I was craving for Filipino food and our Caucasian colleague recommended me this! 0.6 miles away from my training and I had fried mackerel and mixed veggies. They heated my own brown rice I brought and they were very accommodating. Nothing like Filipino hospitality. They have the food market as well with various foods I'd get if I was home. H town is busting with great Filipino food! Clean atmosphere. Simple and straightforward!

Food was fresh and delicious! I ordered online and it said it'd be ready in 45 mins and was as I received a ready for pickup notification via text. It ended up arriving 30 minutes after the pickup time. While pulling into the parking lot, they called to remind me of my order and when I told her that I was pulling in, she asked if I'd like her to bring the order out to me. This was a very kind gesture. I'm a Navy "brat". Black and Japanese, but grew up with many Filipina besties whose families frequently cooked delicious Filipino meals. I recommended this place to my family and would recommend to anyone else craving Filipino food.

This place was amazing! It was my first time here but definitely not my last. The cassava cake was hands down delicious! I loved the siopao asado and the lumpias too! Customer service was awesome. The man/owner gave us free empandas to try. Very cool! Their combos are not too pricey and definitely have good portions. Very worth it! This is my new spot for Filipino Food near Medical Center. I've been to Max's and the other cafeteria near it and they got nothing on this place. Especially price wise-vs Max's. I'm not sure if Godo's got Lechon Kawali and Crispy Patas but the menu here is already pretty extensive. Definitely a must try!

    Ube ensaymada(purple yam sponge cake) ×3, $9.45. Ube Halaya(sweer purple yam desert), $4.99. Bico(sweet rice & jackfruit), $4.99.

My BMP calamansi margarita was distinct in its tanginess. Tried the veggie lumpias and brussel sprouts. The lumpias had tangy dipping sauce that might have been dominated by calamansi. More tang than savory. The brussel sprouts were standard but had a good portion. I tried to detect whether they used fish sauce but I couldn't tell. Ordered the daing na bangus (milkfish) as my entree. They gave me the whole fish and it threw me off that it was mostly deboned since I kept looking for the bones with my tongue and teeth. Fish was nice and crispy and the dipping sauce was more savory than what came with the lumpias. The garlic rice that came with the dish was smoky from that wok hay. Probably could have used a little more soy sauce for flavouring. My favourite dish was the turon dessert (fried bananas) along with the ube ice cream. The coconut sauce they used seemed more like caramel. I haven't eaten much Filipino food so I wasn't sure how authentic the dishes were. I was expecting a little more intensity in the flavours, and I don't know if it was toned down for their customers. There were around ten customers that night. The inside was beautiful and they have a two level patio that is perfect for nights like these. The service was very nice and the kitchen was faster than I expected.

Since we were already in the area after breakfast at TJ's Filipino Cuisine, we finally got the chance to stop by and try their baked goods for ourselves. We arrived early, so the bakery wasn't too busy yet. The bakers were busy prepping more goodies in the back while my cousin and I browsed all the Filipino baked goods we really miss from back home in the Philippines. They even had suman, sapin-sapin, biko, and other kakanin, which was nice to see. I specifically looked for the chicken empanada, and my cousin wanted to try the ube white chocolate chip cookie. We also saw different kinds of siopao and planned to come back later to buy some before heading back to San Antonio. We tried the ube white chocolate chip cookie first, but honestly we weren't totally satisfied. It tasted more like a regular white chocolate chip cookie with purple coloring and didn't really have much ube flavor. I also tried the chicken empanada. My cousin didn't like it because it was sweeter than expected--we were both expecting it to be savory. There seemed to be caramelized sugar in the outside of the pastry, which probably added to the sweetness. I still like it, though it was definitely sweeter than what I'm used to. Red Ribbon's chicken empanada is still my favorite. Later that day before leaving Houston, we came back for the siopao we planned to take home. We finally decided to just buy a couple pieces for ourselves, heat them up in the bakery, and try them fresh. When we saw the price for a four-pack, we were honestly disappointed. It felt expensive for the size. The siopao wasn't huge, and while I like the dough, there wasn't much chicken filling inside. For the portion, taste, and quality, it felt overpriced. Overall, it's probably not worth making another trip back for us. We did enjoy the cassava ube suman, and I like the chicken empanada, but not enough to drive all the way to Houston just for those. If I live nearby, I might come back to try other baked goods, but based on this visit, I'm not sure the rest would impress my palate. I still give them credit for cleanliness and customer service, although we did notice fruit flies on one of the shelves and reported it. The staff was friendly, and the bakery itself was welcoming. At the end of the day, since they're a bakery, the expectation is great-tasting, quality, mouthwatering Filipino breads, pastries ", and kakanin. While some items were enjoyable, overall it just didn't quite live up to the hype for us.

Now, onto Soy Pinoy, because this is where my senses officially took over. What pulled me in wasn't a sign or a menu--it was the aroma. The kind that makes you slow your walk and start scanning to see where it's coming from. Then I saw the display. They had several dishes laid out front and center, plated beautifully on banana leaves, looking crisp, golden, and downright tempting. At that point, it felt less like choosing food and more like being chosen by it. I ordered two dishes. The pork dish was fine--no complaints--but it didn't really wow me. Solid, but not something I'd rush back for. The real star was the whole fried red snapper. I loved that I actually got to pick the fish myself from the display up front, which already sets the tone for freshness. It came out perfectly breaded and fried to a crisp, with great crunch on the outside while the fish inside stayed tender and flavorful. It was served with a side of rice and a fish sauce with Thai chilies that really elevated the whole dish--salty, spicy, and just what it needed to cut through the richness. This is absolutely something I would order again without hesitation. Overall, Soy Pinoy knows exactly how to grab your attention--and more importantly, how to deliver when it counts. It also made us miss Hazel's customer service even more because if she had been there, we're pretty sure she would've handled the situation right away. I waited a while before writing this review because I wanted to be as fair as possible. The lady who served us was still very good, although it was obvious that the overall customer service experience was not quite at the same level as when Hazel was around. The biggest issue was really the tocino. Because of that, this latest visit to TJ's wasn't perfect and honestly made us wonder if it's still worth making this one our go-to spot whenever we're in the Houston area.
