If you are looking for vinyl, there is a wide selection to choose from but be prepared to pay in my opinion higher pricing for used records. While I have close to 1500 records, my purpose was to look at their CD selection. The CD choices were limited. There were more used CDs at the Book Hounds. I browsed at some of the vinyl selection. I saw a used copy of The Beatles Sgt. Pepper for $34.99. It was an American pressing not even a British pressing. Just make sure you bring enough $$$. I wont be back here. The 2 guys behind the counter were into their own thing and not friendly at all. read more

If you like music and/or are into records, you really need to check this place out. They have a TON of records here in all genres. I was really pleasantly surprised by the variety. They sell record players as well as the used records, so it's an easy place to get started entirely if you want to pick up the hobby. The people working the day I visited were nice. We sold some of our used records and equipment to them and it was pretty quick and easy. The amount of money received wasn't amazing but honestly we are happy they went to a good spot and might find a new, happy home. Definitely check this spot out! read more

I loved visiting this shop. The used selection was extensive, particularly for classic rock and metal. They had a big selection of new releases too, such as a section for DFA Records. So the guy who I sold my records to was super cool. I assume he gave me a good price but what the hell do I know? But the other guys that work there, just like a lot of other people have said, in these reviews, were dicks. Not helpful at all. I don't know why people working Customer Service if they're assholes and don't want to help anybody. You're not cool, you're just a dirty long hair, you're a diamond dozen in fucking Bakersfield. Regardless, records are too expensive to buy, so I just sold my old collection. Like I said, it could've been fair who knows? But the guy made me feel like I didn't get screwed so, I guess that's what's important. And I noticed a response on here that told somebody not to come back in if they have a bad experience. Again, if you don't want to be good, Customer Service, why have a store? To be assholes to them? So great, now that guy won't come back in because you chose not to be nice to him. Not dog-friendly. Was told in a SNOOTY way that no dogs allowed the second I set foot in the door. I asked why? And the guy snapped, "I don't know, it's not my store." Great. Its a freaking record store, not a fancy restaurant! I have been going to this store for over a decade. I go out of my way anytime I am driving anywhere near Bakersfield. NOT ANYMORE. We had a great experience here. Not only do they have a huge selection of records- they are very knowledgeable and helpful. AJ took his time with us and taught us about our turn table and spent time fixing it for us. I've been here a couple times since this is one of the only local places my city has to offer and I love the variety of stuff they got, but every time I visit the staff always seems so stand-offish. Personally they have never made me feel welcomed. I honestly hate coming here because of the staff if I'm being honest. Seems like they pick and choose who to be kind to lol. Wish there was somewhere else in town. Also, there was this incident where my buddy picked a record off a shelf and didn't put it back correctly (keep in mind we didn't know there was a certain way we had to place them back up) and the guy behind the counter rudely told him to put it back but with attitude. Such a shame, these guys need to learn some basic manners and respect. read more

Upfront guys are laid back and chill always playing music (which usually ends up in my playlist) as well as having a constant flow of records so there's always something new when you come in! We did have to wait outside because of not having too many people in the store at once. Lever on my Record Player broke off and the manufacture couldn't do anything for me. Brought my RP here to the associate AJ and he worked his magic. He first asked me to give him an hour and like magic everything is back to normal. Aj also set my needle to the correct position so I get the fullest out of my record player. This store is a gem. The selection is outstanding with good stuff in almost every genre. The store has a classic, unpretentious old school record store vibe. And the owner is super chill and the prices are reasonable. I don't live in Bakersfield, but I make a detour off the 99 whenever I'm driving through the valley. Always worth the trip. I only wish I had more time to dig on these detours, but I always find great stuff in the short time I'm there. read more

Went in to check out the place and hopefully buy some records. Dude behind the counter (I can only assume he's the owner) was way too cool to help. I asked for a particular record and he just vaguely pointed me to an area it might be. I looked and did not find it so I went back over to ask if he could order it. He mumbled something about " sometimes he gets those albums in and that I should check back" He then just proceeded to do whatever it was that was more important than helping a customer. At that point I was not spending any money in this lame store. Went over to world records and spent over $200. Pretty much decided I will not go back. It's too bad, clearly this guy doesn't acknowledge that anything can be found on the internet or at the very least in another store. read more

One of the best record stores in California. You can find every genre here and a fat selection of each. I've been going to Ronald's spots for about 9 years now. My personal favorites are the Jazz, Latin and hiphop/instrumentals section. He also has turntables, speakers, receivers, tape players, and other accessories to get you going if you don't have the proper equipment. You can find a wide selection of tapes as well, usually with some local beat makers and punk demos in the mix. Occasionally he puts out a limited quantity of store shirts and totes always with a new design. Ask him about shows too. read more

First of all, I'm old. I remember going to The Wherehouse, Tower Records, Licorice Pizza. I even bought records at White Front in Fresno. These were corporate stores. I frequented dozens of independently owned stores in search of a rare Beatle album. And let me say, Going Underground is like being teleported in a time machine back to 1969. There are aisles of albums, records displayed on the wall along with posters. This is my kind of place! I could spend hours going through the racks and probably will. The bottom section of random records has some gems like old school freestyle and new wave alternative records for cheap! A few months ago my boyfriend decided to get a record player for himself, for his birthday. I thought it was a nice hobby to have, but I grew up with a turntable and wasn't about to relive the constant babysitting that the it seems to require -- in a day when you can create an infinitely long playlist to run in the background, why subject yourself to turning the record every 3-5 songs, removing dust, and dealing with the skips that inevitably happen? So clearly I'm not sold on the mechanics of the record player. But what I am sold on, is going to a place like Going Underground and finding those LPs that I grew up with -- the Pointer Sisters, Kool & the Gang, Hall & Oates, and my mother's collection of the entire Beatles catalog -- right next to Beach House, the Arctic Monkeys, Flying Lotus, and an infinite number of artists I don't recognize by name. This is your eclectic music haven, and you'll spend an hour here and not even skim the surface. It skews heavily to rock, but there's something here for every musical taste. If I had my way, the electronic section would be much bigger -- but I can't imagine that's in high demand here in Bakersfield. Going Underground is not just a place to buy records -- it's a place to do some digging, take your own trip down memory lane, and maybe even discover something new. read more

Ronald has always been helpful and he's always In a good mood which makes shopping there comfortable and not to mention there's a wide selection in each genre of music I dig the new location too, it's definitely easier to find everything and if you need any help finding anything specific he's always pretty helpful with that. I've been toting around records since middle school, which is a long time ago considering the Doors first album I bought from mowing lawns was in my collection! After putting myself through college working at a record store I was pretty aware of what classics would someday have some value. Ron came by and went through it and gave me a fair price which was fortunate for me...and fortunate for the customers as there are some real rarities that will find a better home than just being in storage. Horrible customer service. Came for the first time brought my kids they had gift certificates they got for their birthdays. I had my three boys ages 11-17 and my daughter in stroller, we're shopping looking around maybe 5 minutes max and the employee or owner not sure who he was ( young guy) tells me if I can have my small kids wait outside because they're not shopping and there is people outside waiting to come in and he was at max capacity!! Wow I couldn't believe he was asking me to leave my kids outside. I asked him are asking me to leave my kids outside by themselves? his response well they would he here by the door!! I've been to quite a few records stores around California and I have to say that Going Underground Records is without a doubt the best record store in California! Not only do they have an amazing selection of new/used vinyl but also their prices are more than reasonable when compared to other record stores in CA (I'm lookin' at you Amoeba). One of my favorite places to come to when I'm back in town. Find myself spending hours there and always walk out with a record I never knew about or an artist I've been meaning to check out. I would go so far to say that Going Underground is one of the best record stores in California. The selection is deep(!) with a lot of surprising rarer stuff up on the walls. As I was browsing I kept thinking to myself, "where did they get that", over and over. Also I appreciate all of the framed music posters and flyers hung up around the store.
