This was my first time at Sushi Island. I came here with a couple of coworkers for dinner while we were in the area and decided to give it a try. We ordered a tuna roll and an avocado roll. The food wasn't bad, but the flavors were a little bland, and it felt like something was missing. I've definitely had better sushi elsewhere, although maybe I would have enjoyed a different selection more. The service was great, and the restaurant had a nice atmosphere. I'm always about supporting small, family-owned businesses, and I'm not here to tear anyone down--I just want to be honest about my experience. I called to make a take out order, the lady on the other side of the line was patient and friendly when I asked her what she could suggest to add to my original orders. When I walked into the store for pick up, I was warmly greeted by the sushi bar chef, the owner and the waitress that took my payment. Then I was notified for a 5 minutes wait. Everything was courteous and polite and welcoming. The food was not bad either. The Volcano Roll was a new item for us and it was kid-approved instantly. I also got the Warriors Roll and the waitress suggested the Dragon Roll after I decided on eel and not shrimp. The prices are reasonable as well. I took out some points because of the strong soy sauce smell when entering the restaurant. The decoration is not fancy but slightly run down. Finally got to try Sushi Island and it did not disappoint! I ordered to-go through online and they had it ready pretty fast. The restaurant is quaint and inside was chill. Food: * 49er Roll: Imitation crab meat, avocado, topped with Salmon and sliced lemon. 8/10 * Island Roll: Yellowtail, avocado, topped with salmon, tuna, tobiko, special sauce. 9/10 * Giants Roll: Spicy scallop, cucumber , topped with fresh salmon, tobiko, special sauce. 9/10 All the rolls were a good size, the fish tasted fresh, and the sauces weren't too overpowering. We pass by this plaza once in a while. And when we do we are always curious to check out the Sushi Island restaurant. We finally dropped by recently and left highly satisfied. We arrived for a Saturday dinner. The sushi restaurant is located in a nice plaza off Camden and Branham cross streets in San Jose. Parking is easy and accessible in the medium size parking lot. Sushi Island has a catchy name. The Japanese decor inside is simple and modern. The restaurant is a decent size as there are a couple of booths and a few tables. There is a small sushi bar with a few seats surrounding it. The staff was friendly and accommodating. We ordered the UFO sushi roll, dinner bento box with teriyaki beef and CA rolls, salmon nigiri, unagi nigiri, and a glass of Chardonnay wine. Everything was delicious and tasty. Our favorite was the baked UFO sushi roll. I enjoyed the scallops on top which added more flavor. The teriyaki beef in my bento box was tender and to a pleasant surprise there was 6 scrumptious CA rolls. Overall we enjoyed our experience at Sushi Island. I love this place! We've been coming here for quite some time now. We even have our own table and the staff knows us and our order! There are plenty sushi places around and we tried them all and they're by far the best ones. They have reasonable prices, huge variety of sushi, their lunch specials are wonderful and great value! I live within two minutes walking distance. I ordered the two item bento box to go, salmon teriyaki and sashimi. The sashimi was fine, large pieces of tuna, salmon, hamachi,, and white fish that looked like escolar. I usually avoid escolar because it is not digestible, but it was okay. I must say I was very impressed overall with customer service, food, quality, and price. I had placed a big order for a team meeting on a Monday evening. I called during my lunch hours to confirm they could fulfill my order as soon as they open. I was pleasantly surprised when they could they even took my order ahead of time. I showed up at 5:20 as planned. The staff working at that time or very friendly and confirm confirmed my complete order. It arrived with miso soup and a delicious salad. Unlike other restaurants, Sushi Island refrains from decorating the nigiri with wasabi. I appreciate that; it allows the delicate flavor of the seafood to be the star of the dish. There were large portions and I was completely satisfied. Don't come hungry. Feel they are tailored more takeout as we say order after order being fulfilled as we waited for our food to show up. We waited well over 40 minutes food. Food didn't come out at the same time so our family four looked like they took turns eating. If it was a full restaurant I would understand the wait but it was not busy. What a horrible first time experience! Never again.... My son and I went to the restaurant looking forward to a nice Japanese dinner. My son's two dishes came at separate times, but both within an acceptable amount of time. My son felt bad that my order still hadn't arrived, so he intentionally ate his second meal slowly in hopes my order would show up. I noticed all the entire staff was doing was fulfilling the to-go orders including people coming in long after us. Literally one hour later, still no sign of my order. The waitresses never came by to check on us and never even made eye contact. At that point I called the waitress over and asked for my check. The service was attentive and kind, and the presentation of the dishes was top notch. They were easily able to accommodate our large party of nine, and after the meal everyone had only positive things to say about the experience. I tried out the 10-piece Chef Sashimi Regular and was more than satisfied with the quality and volume of fish that I received. Others tried out the bento and rolls, and it all turned out to be great. Based on the good experience so far, I'd be curious to try out some of their other options such as the ramen or donburi, but it will be difficult to turn down another sashimi feast. This is our favorite neighborhood sushi restaurant... friendly chef and wait staff, large slices of sushi and sashimi, and tasty rolls. Don't let the unassuming store front in a strip mall fool you. Yes, it's a casual dining spot, but perfect for any day of the week. It's our go-to place now, and they seem to be getting busier the longer they've been open. If you decide to order based on the Yelp page, consider calling the restaurant yourself and place an order on your own. We made the mistake of ordering through Yelp or their website (I can't remember which one) and were charged a [DoorDash?] fee, even though we were picking up the to-go order ourselves. When we came to pick up our order, the server told us to call the restaurant next time. I hope this helps someone else in the future. The only suggestion I would have for Sushi Island is to serve as much of the table their meals around the same time. As the sushi chef finishes a roll or dish, it usually comes to the table right away. While it's nice to be served quickly, it's very awkward to wait for the rest of the table to be served. I would prefer waiting a little longer and have most of our items arrive around the same time, rather than in stages. I've noticed this every time we've come in a group of 3 or more. The item delivered first usually sits on the table because the person who ordered it is too polite to start without everyone else being served. In my opinion, I'd rather have them hold the items behind the counter and bring them out together or as close to one another as possible. Just my two cents! Keep up the great work! My family wanted to try this place out for my mum's birthday dinner during their soft opening (early September). We got a ton of different stuff and my family enjoyed it all: chicken teriyaki plate, 2-item bento boxes featuring california rolls, sashimi, katsu, shioyaki, etc, hand rolls, special rolls, and sashimi platters. I'm rating only the items I ate: The sushi rice wasn't seasoned enough for my liking, so I felt like I was eating plain rice with all of the rolls. All the fish was fresh and the rolls were generous, so they are well worth the price as were all the other items my family ordered. golden dragon roll (4/5): kind of my go-to whenever I go to sushi just because I like the flavor and texture warriors roll (5/5): best bites of the night that I would come back for, I loved the savoriness and crunchiness of the fried onions combined with the creamy special sauce...salmon was super fresh too under the roll (3/5): get this only if you really love raw scallop. It looked interesting to me and I had never tried raw scallop before so I didn't know what to expect..good thing is they heap them on the roll so you do get a ton rainbow roll x2 (4/5): good quality fish, standard california roll My dad hadn't read their note on the receipt about how large groups automatically get charged gratuity and had tipped them, but our waitresses noticed and let him know, so we really appreciate this gesture (+1 star) instead of just letting us pay extra. Hopefully their operations improve since the soft opening seemed kind of overwhelming for the waitstaff. There was one sushi chef making all the rolls so our rolls came out very staggered. 3-stars for the soft opening of Sushi Island. I saw some buzz for Sushi Island here on Yelp, so I drove over to check it out. It's in the center on the corner of Camden & Branham, behind El Pollo Loco. The restaurant had six 4-tops, three 2-tops, one 6-top, and some stools around around the sushi bar. There was only one server, and she seemed a bit out of her element with only a handful of customers. There was a good influx of pick-ups and to-go orders, and at least on a Saturday afternoon, over half the people I saw were families that seemed to be coming after tae kwon do a few doors down. I was looking forward to getting a lunch bento box with short ribs and tempura, but they removed the short ribs from their menu, and you can only order from the lunch menu Monday-Friday. That means if you come on the weekend, don't look at the Lunch Plates, Lunch 2-Item Bentos, or Lunch Sushi Combos. You can order the dinner versions of these items, but the prices are higher. With the menu restrictions, I ended up ordering some standard items that I use to compare different Japanese restaurants, comparing apples to apples. I ordered sake nigiri (fresh salmon), karaage chicken, and agedashi tofu. When I placed my order, I told the waitress I'd like to look at the menu longer so I could order something else while she got those started. They utilized a tablet for taking orders, btw. Oh-one thing I noticed on the menu that I wanted to highlight was the fact that they had fresh wasabi, as you don't always see that. Granted, you had to pay $3.50 to have fresh wasabi, but at least it was an option. I noticed that the waitress didn't clear the tables as customers left. She also never asked me if I wanted to order anything else. I had to ask her if I could add something else to my tab. I had to ask her for a box, and I heard other customers asking her for delayed items and utensils. I also had to ask her for a copy of my receipt after I paid my bill. Someone from the kitchen finally came out to clear three tables, but with such a small restaurant, it would be wise to increase the speed at which they clean the tables so they can turnover the tables faster. Okay, so even if I couldn't get shortribs, I was still looking forward to the sushi, as people were raving about the quality of the fish. The sushi chef mentioned to people they had Blue Fin Tuna on special today. My sake nigiri was ginormous! I also tried their Golden Dragon Roll, which was supposed to come with fried shrimp, crab, cucumber, tempura flakes, tobiko, and special sauce. After taking a bite, I double-checked my notes and confirmed that it was missing the tobiko. The sushi chef apologized and added a spoonful, no biggie. It was a strange combination though, because the tobiko didn't have rice to stick to, so it just kind of fell off the dry flakes and was lost in a pile of tempura batter. I wouldn't order that again. The salmon nigiri was definitely the best thing I ate. The food wasn't bad, but it wasn't anything outstanding that I want to rave about. The sushi chef seemed friendly, but the rest of the service was less than desirable. Granted, they are still in their soft opening stage, so it will likely get better with some time. I'd go to Sushi Island again, maybe just wait awhile so they can get into a good groove, especially when it comes to service. read more

My bf and I tried the $88, 30 piece sashimi plate as a pick-up order as we didnt really want to be out. I am always apprehensive in doing this as I want my fish as fresh as I possibly can. BF picked it up and noted that he watched the chef prepare our plate with the best care. The food was SO GOOD. The 30 piece sashimi had so much variety and the green wasabi-esque sauce they put on top of it was so good. The sashimi set also came with miso soup and a salad. Service was great as staff was super attentive. I was one of 2 customers so the staff was also friendly and wiling to make modifications. Giving this a lower rating because it was a bit pricey and despite trying to go for a healthy ish roll I still felt it was a bit heavy although that could have been the ice cream which was DELICIOUS! Ambiance was quiet and clean and there was plenty of parking. The servers also don't heckle you every few minutes to ask if you're done or rush you out which is also nice. read more
