I love walking into a restaurant and seeing the staff and diners greet each other by name. The sushi chef knew more than half the guests as they walked in, which says a lot about how well this place takes care of its regulars. Everyone seemed genuinely happy to be there, and the vibe was warm and welcoming. I let my wife and kids pick all the rolls while I enjoyed a large Japanese beer while listening to them tell me about their day. I couldn't tell you the names of what we ordered, but everything was super tasty and full of great flavor. The fish tasted incredibly fresh. My only small gripe is that the slices were thinner than what I'm used to at other spots in the area, but the quality and flavor definitely made up for it. We'll definitely be coming back! read more

Friendly staff, great rolls, average price. Their Super Paradise was very tasty as was the Philadelphia roll & the spicy tuna roll. The staff were very attentive and got us in and out quickly. The few times I've dined here, it's always been good service and delicious sushi. Most recently I ordered a roll and the chef's selection and the hamachi was buttery soft (not pictured). Sushi Jae deserves to be way busier than they are! We visited on a Tuesday evening and were the only customers inside during our meal. The chefs were busy nearly the whole time however, apparently preparing online orders. Still, the service was friendly and rolls came out quickly. Our server mentioned that they are much busier on weekends but I was still surprised with how empty they were at dinner time on a weekday. It must be because the outside appearance makes it seem like a hole in the wall despite that they're able to accommodate a decent amount of diners inside. The fish was fresh and every roll was well-prepared. As far as sushi goes, the pricing was about what you can expect in San Jose, not a great value but not too bad either. We have been coming here for years and lately the service has been terrible. Our orders come staggered and by the time the last person gets their food (me!) everyone has finished their meal. The server Ian told me it was bc the 49er roll takes a while to prep. What? a California roll slapped with a salmon on top takes 30 minutes to prep? Was craving sushi on a Friday evening and stumbled across Sushi Jae! We started with their agedashi tofu, which was solid. We got Mango Crazy, Super Paradise, and Spider rolls. Their rolls seem to be smaller than rolls at other restaurants. The Mango Crazy and Super Paradise rolls were alright, nothing too special about them. I used to come here a lot during my college days back in 2016-2018. I don't live around the area, but the food was always good here. As most reviews noted- the portion is definitely smaller here compared to other sushi places. I definitely agree! However, the fish here is super fresh and my all time favorite is the lion king roll here. Ordered online for takeout, and the food wasn't ready when we got there because it was fairly busy in the restaurant. The staff was very kind and communicative, and offered tea and water while we waited. Took a little under 10 minutes for the order to come out. The sushi wasn't the best I've ever had, but certainly not the worst! The raw fish was decent, and the specialty rolls are unique, especially the Super Rainbow Roll. Portions are a little small, but we were satisfied. I didn't get a picture of the udon, but we got that too and it was piping hot and delicious! I would definitely come back to try more, and am impressed by the customer service. read more

I've been here twice so far with my family. Last time we came here was a few days ago for a birthday celebration where we ordered: Spider Roll (5/5) Rainbow Roll 2x (5/5) Super Rainbow Roll (5/5) --The deep fried scallops were sweet and tender, and the crunch contrasted well with the roll. Unanimously the best roll of the night. Super Paradise Roll (5/5) -- Mom ordered this, but subbed the spicy tuna for regular tuna and sauce on the side. It definitely needs the sauce or the roll is too dry. Orange Blossom Roll (5/5) -- Didn't try, but my brother enjoyed it. Fire Crunch Roll (4/5) --Tasted strongly of wasabi, so every other ingredient is overpowered by this. The sweet potato crunch also didn't really add anything to the roll. Unagi Don (3.5/5) --Similar to any other place that offers unagi don. Healthy portion, but sauce was too sweet. Chicken Teriyaki Don (3.5/5) --^^ Chirashi (5/5) Sashimi Combo (5/5) Staff were friendly, patient, and accommodating. Go for the sushi, nothing else. Omg!! Have you ever tried a place that blows your mind?! My partner and I have been on the hunt (since I moved here in November) for a fresh and good sushi place. I found it! I can't believe this is located so close to home. It is kinda dark interior when we went. I am sure if the windows are open it would be much brighter. We had the fried scallops and those were sooo good. Let me tell ya... the smile and joy that was expressed on my face could not be hidden. My partner was also impressed with the presentation of each sushi roll. Most of the rolls were spicy but I didn't mind because it elevated the rolls. The fish was very very fresh. I moved to San Jose from Chicago 2 years ago with my family and this restaurant is right down the street from where I live. I love that I can walk here with my kids or when I'm having a moms night with my neighbor. I am VERY picky when it comes to sushi quality and this place out does itself every time. We recently discovered this hidden sushi restaurant and from the outside appears very simple almost like it's not even open for business but inside it's clean, cute and offers great food. It's the don't judge a book by its cover situation here. The food is carefully prepared and everything we've tried tastes great from sashimi to rolls, and chicken & salmon teriyaki meals. The food is consistent and carefully prepared. The chicken & salmon teriyaki are both tender and juicy unlike other restaurants which often come overcooked and dry tasting. This sushi restaurant takes its food seriously with flavor and consistency which we appreciate, they don't cut corners in quality. The only suggestion I would make is for them to make more of an impression on the outside to catch customers attention. Maybe some cute string lighting or lit up window signs. But hey, it's actually good because you're not eating as much rice. Let's talk about the food items: Baked Mussels: Sauce was great, sweet and flavorful, cooked just right. Salmon special roll (deep fried): It was not greasy! Though the roll was deep fried, the salmon was not tough or cooked through. The crispiness stayed in the outside and preserved the sushi traits in the inside. This was my favorite roll of all the rolls we tried. I recommend this one! South San Jose: This roll has torched salmon on the outside. This roll has the aburi effect! A must try too! Wanted to try a different sushi spot instead of our usual spot and I am glad we did. From the outside this place looks closed but they're open. Just have the windows tinted for the sunlight. We were greeted when we walked in and were seated. We ordered the tofu appetizer and a green salad. The tofu broth was very flavorful and highly recommend it. The salad was great and no overly dressed. We shared four rolls, Dragonbow, deep fried CA Roll, Super Paradise and Adam Bomb. All of them were amazing and very fresh. The staff was very attentive and always checking if we needed anything or checking how the rolls are. Highly recommend you give them a try. Fresh rolls and very reasonable prices. The waitress greeted us promptly and took our drink order. When she returned with our drinks she took our food order and repeated it to make sure we get what we wanted (nice touch). We ordered 3 special rolls and a spicy tuna roll. The spicy tuna arrived first and was so fresh that it just melted in our mouths. Then the 3 special rolls arrived. Just as fresh. I have to give 5 stars for this place. Small family owned business. It's literally so hidden, many of my friends live near this restaurant but don't know about it. I tell all my friends about why they need to go. When I go to sushi restaurants, I don't go to get full... I go to enjoy the delicate texture of sushi, harmony of the flavor, good company, and the calm atmosphere. Sushi Jae is so special, it allows me to enjoy all of that in harmony. I have been going there since when I was 16. Whenever we had something special going on, my family would go to Sushi Jae to eat dinner. My family have always enjoyed the calm and relaxing atmosphere and their delicious food, and I feel like we were able to bond even stronger as a family by the time we left the restaurant. I recently turned 21 so my mom and I went to Sushi Jae to order some sushi rolls and she bought me a bottle of sake as well. It wasn't anything fancy but it was actually my first time drinking with my mom so I thought it was special. The restaurant was full, yet it didn't feel loud at all and my mom and I were able to fully focus on our convo. We sat and talked about different things in life and ended up staying there until closing time ! Later on, the wife of the owner came and joined our table to talk with us and had some good convo as well. Just like that I added another memory with Sushi Jae that night. Sushi rolls are always very delicious there and I always get bombarded with various flavors. I never question their quality. My favorite is their deep fried sushi roll! it is very crispy, warm, and fulfilling so yall should try it out. We were looking for some place new to go for dinner and saw this place was so highly rated. It really looks like a hole in the wall from the outside, in between Petco and Pinnacle Animal Hospital, with very little signage; so it was no wonder that I had never noticed it before. But then you step inside and the place was packed with families and couples enjoying sushi. I think it's a good sign when a restaurant has a lot of people dining there! I did like how they have a whole vegetarian section of the menu, and there were a lot of options. We went for a few different sushi rolls, including trying the vegetarian rainbow roll, the super paradise roll, and the flaming sushi which comes on a plate that they light on fire for a few minutes, so the roll has a nice smokiness and it really enhances the flavor, but doesn't cook the sashimi on top. There are definitely enough unique rolls and options, and the service was very friendly and helpful. We will be back! read more
