Only if 49ers had it! One sip of their espresso and I was up, awake and ready to get on the road again! I became an instant fan, but then I thought what if those hopeful 49ers who were climbing up these hills in search of gold had Gold Country Roasters to serve them espresso shots before they went further into the wilderness?!! See, after enjoying my own espresso and 1/3 of my girlfriend's latte, I was convinced that more of those poor souls would have survived the dangers that came with their prospecting business! How you may ask? Simple, how likely are you to see an incoming grizzly (where there ever grizzlies in these mountains?) or a hiding cougar if you were snoozing on your mule?! Or, wouldn't you be more likely to notice nuggets of gold laying down beneath your feet if you were wide awake and alert? I digress! The cafe is in a nice little corner. You can either sit outside or enjoy the nice space inside. The servers are very nice, and the coffee is excellent. Where the heck is Murphys, California? This is the most FAQ's I received after posting our weekend adventures on FB. As some of you know, we have a hiking group and go on many adventures in this great state of ours. A couple of weekends ago, we ended up in Natural Bridges Hiking Trail and Moaning Caverns in Calaveras County. It's about a 3 hour drive from the City. After our adventures with Mother Nature, we ended up in the town of Murphys and we were looking for a place to eat and have some coffee. Our original plan was to grab some pastries, but the place we wanted to go to was closed so we were looking for alternative places. And hell no, we weren't going to a Starbucks coffee shop of all places. That would be like going to Paris and eating at a McDonalds. We wanted something unique and indigenous to the area and Gold County Roasters looked appropriate. We were in the middle of the town and this place was located on the edge of town, so it took a lil bit of walking, but we were completely fine with that since we got to check out the rest of the town. The place is on the corner of Jones and "Scott" Streets along Main Street. There's a reason I placed Scott Street on quotation marks as one of the Baristas didn't know the cross street. More of an inside joke, but hope she'll get it if she reads this review. The reason I asked the cross street was for the rest of our hiking group (including the Wifey) who were walking slowly behind us while they were busy window shopping. Obviously, they serve coffee and they also offer non-coffee drinks like cocoa, hot chocolate, chai tea, teas, cream soda and fruit smoothies. Their beans come from Kenya, Columbia, Peru, Guatemala, Indonesia and Sumatra and you can definitely buy some to take home and brew yourself. They also have their own special blends, which is a combination of any of the aforementioned places. I had a Soy Latte (20 oz - $4.10) and my son had a medium cup of Hot Cocoa (16 oz - $3.25). The latte hit the spot as it satiated my caffeine fix for the day. Also, a 20 oz size for that price is a dollar cheaper compared to the City. Initially, the place wasn't that busy until the rest of our hiking group arrived and ordered everything else on the menu. Now the Barista understood why I was asking her for the cross street as they got busy in a jiffy. Wifey ordered Iced Chai Tea Latte (24 oz - $4.25) and it was more than she could handle. The place is nice as it looks like a typical coffee shop complete with indoor and outdoor seating. The men choose to sit outside and enjoyed the few millimeters of rain that decided to drop by creating that distinct smell of rain hitting the ground. It's a nice smell, and one that we need more of. Yup...definitely better than Starbucks. read more

Delicious latte- I got a large, which comes with three shots of espresso (unlike a large hot latte from Starbucks which only has two!) It was great! I wasn't feeling adventurous, but they had some delicious looking drinks like peppermint bark and some other delightful looking treats. read more

Our family had a little staycation weekend where we discovered new things in our neighboring cities. There were 3 of us drinking coffee and we ordered 4 drinks. They all were fantastic. My nephew ordered a blackberry latte and it actually was all of our favorite! Everything is delicious and the shop is really cute. I'd for sure recommend it! read more

Stayed in Angel's camp for 4th of July weekend. I love visiting small towns and visiting local shops. Sadly the only coffee shop in Angel's camp is a *bux. We drove 12 mins away to check out this coffee shop and Wow, the first small town place I've found great matcha. Very strong. Latte was great too. Full body flavor. Not over roasted. Ladies at the counter were quick and friendly, despite the how busy they were. Definitely will come back tomorrow and when we're in town. read more

It was one of the few unpleasant experiences in coffee shops in America. I love coffee very much and understand it. When traveling around cities, I always find coffee shops where I can relax, try coffee and move on. In this cafe we ​​ordered a cappuccino, 2 hot chocolates, an Americano and cookies with ememdems (for the child). The cookies turned out to be completely tasteless, they fell apart in the hands, which contained a large amount of baking soda! Such an amount that an unpleasant aftertaste immediately remained and the child refused to eat it. Our whole family tried it and everyone said it was a lot of baking soda! I decided to approach the employees and say that it turned out to be tasteless for us, so that they would exchange it for something else or return the money. I was staying at a cabin in Avery last week and when I arrived I realized while we have wifi we didn't have cell service which wasn't going to work for me as I had calls scheduled the following day for work. I found this nice coffee shop in town and ordered a chai tea and worked away from 11am until they closed. I felt a tad uneasy about taking up one of their many tables all day with just a tea order but none of the staff made me feel uncomfortable about staying. I was going to order pastries or something but by the time I arrived they only had a few items left so I wish they had a larger selection. I love that by all the tables they had outlets, that was a huge plus! I definitely suggest any passing travelers to stop by this place. They make good drinks. Was here on a mini vacation and made two trips to this coffee shop during my time in Murphys. The first day I came and the staff was very friendly and upbeat. The next day the staff was so so, not as enthusiastic. Other than that the drinks were spot on. I ordered a Hot mocha latte with regular 2% and the cherry syrup. I loved the cherry mocha from Starbucks during the valentines month, it seems it was around for 1 year but they never brought the drink back :( so when I saw the cherry syrup here At this coffee shop I immediately tried to recreate it and it was delicious! Great coffee! Nice and hot, always fresh. They have a small amount of fresh pastries, some pre made gluten free stuff too that I didn't try. Yelpsop's Fables: "The Caffeinated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County." One day, in the month of December it was, a fleece-covered Californian jumping frog hopped gamely, if somewhat gingerly, into town. He had been traveling for quite some time by that point, all the way from his home in the coastal redwoods, where the sight of the Pacific Ocean cloaked in sunset-saturated fog soothed him every evening after dinner as he sipped pourover coffee made from organic, fresh-roasted beans. By the time he arrived in Gold County that morning, he had survived the hazardous perils (for a frog) of the East Bay, and the Stockton interchange, and the long drive into the Sierra foothills through the orchards and ranches and oak-studded rolling hills of Calaveras County. This frog needed something to drink. Warm, invigorating, well made. And just any ordinary coffee wasn't going to cut it. "Sure," he said to himself. "I'll drink Starbucks or Peets in a pinch. But there must be artisan coffee around here. It is California, after all." By the time this partic'ler frog arrived in town, a heavy winter rainstorm had begun to pelt the metal roofs and walkways that wrapped around Main St and onto Scott St. He hopped a little less happily than he usually did; it had been a long way to come, and he missed his pourovers and French presses and had endured Nespresso coffee the day earlier while visiting friends in Brentwood and even gulped down a mug of Luwak civet coffee that morning - good, but certainly not fresh. The frog was impressed by what he saw at Gold Country Roasters: the vintage "San Franciscan" roaster in the back room, the cranberry lemon scones and apple oat muffins from Sugar Bakery in Angels Camp, the well-behaved crowd of regulars seated around tables and chairs. He liked the bird-friendly poster on the wall and the brown bags of fresh whole beans lined up on the side wall. And he loved the Christmas stockings made from burlap coffee bags and the rest of the holiday-themed decor. And the giant French Press for two, which he ordered with organic Guatemalan medium roasted beans, sounded pretty appealing as well. "Of course we serve frogs here, " the woman at the counter told him, politely avoiding his wet, bedraggled appearance and the slightly glazed look in his bulging, road-weary eyes. "We'd be more than hoppy to!" So the frog quietly waited for the French press pot to be ready. It arrived soon, shiny stainless steel gleaming and bright. It was filled to the brim with warm, fragrant, well-brewed coffee. As the frog munched his muffin and stole pieces from his traveling companion's scone, he sighed contentedly. "That's some mighty fine coffee," he croaked. "Mighta' fine, if I don' say so m'self. And quite a tasty hunk a' muffin. I don't even miss the fact that they leave the flies out of it around here. This Guatemalan coffee positively hits the spot - smooth, chocolate notes, light acidity, good mouthfeel. This whole place jest' makes we want to up and jump with joy!" Invigorated by the coffee and baked goods, the frog set off again, to taste wines and break trail through wet snow all the way to the shore of Alpine Lake, and back again, for more wine and walkabouts and Gold Country adventure. And whenever he needed some rest, or a light snack, he returned here, for a 12 oz. mug of Kenyan coffee one afternoon, and 1 lb. of El Salvador Finca Casacurry whole beans for home, and more muffins and bagels toasted with cream cheese and complimentary Moose Munch and ample amounts of Christmas good cheer. "What a hoppening place," the frog thought. "It gives me the liquid courage to fly high once more: to try even more wine, to ski in even deeper snow, to explore even the biggest of the giant Sequoia trees. With this stuff coursing through my veins, I could do just about anything!" "We hop you'll come back soon! " the staff at Gold Country Roasters called to him as he left for the third and final time. "We like frogs around here, especially the coffee-loving ones like you. We'll have fresh beans ready and more muffins when you return!" "I certainly hop so," said the frog. And then he turned back to the street, waved a final goodbye, ribbited loud and long for all of Murphys to hear, and leaped off valiantly into the chilly morning sunshine. Moral: Flying high in Gold Country takes more than wine and a wing and a prayer. It needs freshly roasted coffee, too, and delicious baked goods alongside. Gold Country Roasters was exactly what I was looking for in Murphys. They operate a nice coffee shop on the edge of Downtown Murphys serving coffee, espresso drinks, and other treats. The bright and open shop is just off the main drag and easily within walking distance of the tasting rooms. On this visit, I had a rather large double Espresso con Panna with a very generous amount of Panna. They roast their beans and pull a good espresso which is always very nice. The menu is pretty standard, but you can always customize your special beverage. The shop has several customers on a weekday further showing how good they are. I will definitely come back here. There are two entrances - street and parking lot - although the parking lot entrance takes you in the back of the store. They have wifi and lots of seating for checking email or just posting those wine pics on Instagram. read more

They also have some really beautiful and unique, locally made coffee cups and some of their own tagged cups.
