I had an appointment at 11:20. Waited an hour. Final straw was when someone who had an appointment after me and came after me was seen before I was. If you look young do not come here because they won't respect you. When I walked in there were three people being helped by three workers. They workers did not look at you or acknowledge you and just made you wait. When it was finally my turn the worker kept leaving me to help other people. read more

I went here after reading yelp reviews today. I was beyond impressed with the level of hospitality and the cheap prices. As stated in other reviews, Dr. Kim is extremely detailed about everything you need to know about your vision and eye care. As well, Andrew Lee helped me with my purchase and put no pressure on me to buy more than I needed. The total for eye exam + 6 month supply of contacts was $120!! I was thrilled. Dr. Michelle Kim is amazing. She was so nice and professional, really made my eye examination fly by. I would only come here for her. The optometry place itself is in the back of a sort of odd plaza building with a bunch of random shops. Parking is in a spacious lot. I came here because I haven't had an eye exam in about 2 years, so I thought I should get one soon. I was nervous this place wouldn't be as good as Optikos Optometry which I used to go to (they pulled out of my network of care providers. ) but it happened to be a great experience. I recently went to Gold Optometry to get my eyes checked up and to purchase a new frame. I've got to say, it's probably the best place I've ever been to! I used to frequent Eyeland Optometry in the past but the frames I got there (prescription sunglasses and glasses) were poor quality and the staff did not really speak much English (Koreatown). I was told to check out Gold Optometry by my family who used to frequent there in the past, so I decided to give it a shot. Since it's in Koreatown, I expected them all to only speak Korean, and with my extremely limited Korean, I was a bit reluctant to go in. The staff all greeted me in Korean. Inside, there are beautiful displays of the store owner's turtle collection, not real but jewelry and decorative items. I talked to one of the salespeople there and he helped me choose a pair of frames. I tried to speak in Korean as much as I could but I had to bust out the English every so often and he still understood! Afterward, I got my eyes checked by Dr. Michelle Kim and she was great! Probably one of the best optometrists I've ever visited. She spoke perfect English (UCLA grad, so I wasn't too surprised) so it was extremely easy and comfortable for me to communicate with my optometrist (for once!). She made sure my prescription was perfect, double-checking to make sure I was sure on the clearness of my vision. After all the eye tests, I asked her a bunch of questions and she happily answered all of them knowledgeably! I felt confident walking out of the examination room knowing what I wanted to know about my eyes. In less than 30 minutes, my glasses were completely ready. Fastest service ever. Fitted them on my face perfectly too. Unfortunately, I noticed after I walked out of the store that there was a lot of glaring on my glasses. My previous pair did not have any glare because of the Anti-reflective coating, which I did ask for again for this pair of glasses. I called them the next day to have them check them out, and did so gladly. I didn't get his name, but the gentleman said the Anti-reflective coating was put on there and it was on the receipt, and that because the frames don't have a nose-piece to keep the frames off my face, it caused the glare. Believing him, and not being able to notice in the store, I decided to give it another go and walked out. However, after testing it out again on the drive home, it still glared like crazy. I went back immediately and told him that there is absolutely no Anti-reflective coating. The gentleman who helped me before was helping another guest, so another salesperson came to me and checked them out. He didn't say anything and told me he was just going to replace the old lenses with new ones that definitely will have the Anti-reflective coating within 15 minutes, and he was right. Within 15 minutes, I got my glasses back with the new lenses, and sure enough it had the Anti-reflective coating on it, which I noticed on the drive home because NOTHING was glaring. Even though there was a slight problem (and the one salesman possibly could have lied to me to avoid making new lenses, but I'm not going to make any judgements), Gold Optometry quickly fixed the problem and was very quick. So, in conclusion, if you want extremely friendly, guest-service oriented, well-informed, and quick guest service, then I HIGHLY RECOMMEND Gold Optometry! Came back here after looking at surprisingly stellar reviews on Yelp... and was again reminded of how service is very subjective. My previous experience here (came once, about two years ago) was awful, and so I had not wanted to come back, but I did miss Dr. Michelle. Sure, she's a great examiner, but just one person in the entire store shouldn't be enough to make me come back a second time. The workers here are very unfriendly, and do not greet you when you come in the door. When I first walked in, they were all just sitting around. They just looked at me and then looked away. Is that any way to treat a customer, none the less a person? I, however, just put it off and continued with my exam. Dr. Michelle wasn't in that day, and I was examined by another doctor who was very unfriendly, and didn't tell me anything nor answered any questions. A very surly woman, she was. The prescription she gave me was actually incorrect, and I had to come back a second time for Dr. Michelle to get me the correct one. Furthermore, they didn't have my glasses ready when I came back the second time, so I had to make another appointment for a couple days later. I usually don't come out to LA (because I live in the San Fernando Valley) so I came out a week later, when I had other pressing matters to take care of. Would you believe it -- my glasses weren't ready, when they were supposed to be completed 4 days ago. They actually told me -- without any trace of guilt -- that I'd have to come back in a couple hours. When I did, they were the wrong lenses with the prescription from the first doctor. Needless to say, I had to make another appointment, then another one, and another one, and another one... I can't take them seriously when they provide atrocious service like this. I'm pretty easygoing, but when they mess with my glasses -- which are like an extension of my eyes -- I don't even. Why is this a trial-and-error process? Then why have the eye exam in the first place? On top of making me pay with cash -- instead of the insurance I have that would have covered most, if not all, of the costs -- they bungled my glasses and I had to return a total of six times. My glasses are still kind of fuzzy and not clear, but I have no idea what they do in there and I don't wish to go back. It's completely ridiculous. read more

But when my glasses got lost in an accident and I read my buddy Stan's review of this place, I decided to give it a shot. Man, am I glad I did! Check this out. They have a decent selection of cheaper frames ranging from $39-$99 (price INCLUDING lenses), things you'd actually wear and think is cute. And it's in a separate area without salespeople so you can try as many as you'd like to your heart's content. They've also got a wide selection of high-end brands too. Buy frames/contacts from them, and they just might give you the exam for free. That's right, I said free. And if you just want the exam itself, it's pretty affordable at $60 for the glasses exam. You're probably not going to find any cheaper than that except at a whambam thankyou ma'am Costco exam. Extremely courteous, non-snooty professional staff. As a Korean-American, I've gotten a variety of reactions and treatment from the first generation Korean businesses, mostly ranging in the "what-you-can't-speak-Korean-well-so-I'm-going-to-treat-you-with-lesser-respect" area. Nope, not here. Not only are there staff who speak English perfectly well, but they're very understanding of this poor grad student without insurance (they gave me an additional discount on top of everything else) and helpful in picking out frames that look good. Dr. Michelle Kim was my young and friendly optometrist who speaks perfect English. If you're prescription isn't too bad, they can finish your order on-site in about 40min to an hour. Go grab lunch, go get some coffee, do some grocery shopping and it'll be ready for pickup. Unlike other optometrists, this place is open on Sundays. Yeah, so, like, people who are normal and have jobs and lives during the week can go and get some glasses at a leisurely time too. What more do you want? Dr. Kim is by far the best eye doctor I ever had. I suffer from near-sighted, dry eye, and peripheral vision problems. All other eye doctors I went to told me that my eye sight is simply not "bad enough"for them to do anything. The last one I went to gave me prescription lenses that is stronger than I need it and it create lots of inconveniences. Dr. Kim listened to my issues, and really took her time to fix the problem. She gave me a lighter prescription which dramatically changed my comfort level. Jay who helped me pick up my new frame is amazing. Excellent customer service. He explained my insurance plan very thoroughly to my best benefit. I have receive lots of compliments on my new Oliver People frame. One slight down-side is I waited 30-60 minutes every time despite that I have an appointment. If you are in a rush heading somewhere you should double check this. read more

FAKE RAY BANS!!!! Ok. I bought my Ray Ban sun-glasses here about a year or a bit long ago. Used my insurance since I my eye sights are near perfect. Check this out. I called Ray Ban United States, SunglassHut, and other glasses store that sale Ray Bans (REAL ONES). They all have told me that Ray Bans are MADE IN ITALY. Now, I just realized that my glasses were made in CHINA!!! today when my colleague wanted to check out my glasses. He said to me, "I didn't know Ray Ban was made in China". HOW EMBARRASSING IS THAT!!!! Now, I called back GOLD OPTOMETRY and they told me that Ray Ban glasses are now being manufactured in CHINA. (REALLY?????) according to RAY BAN US. they are not. They are still manufactured in ITALY. I AM PRETTY PISSED OFF BY THIS. With all their great reviews on them, how can they bluntly say false information and sell you knock off goods with other company's logos on it and say ITS REAL? This is to warn you guys who ever buys named brand glasses here. Please do research and check where they are made from. CHECK THE QUALITY OF THEM TOO! I gotta say that you can get addicted to this place! I have an addiction to sunglasses and when I walked in here, it felt like Mecca. Pros: takes VSP, open on Saturdays, takes FSA and HSA with a huge selection of high end glasses such as cartier, tom ford, oliver peoples and numerous others. I was having a hard time finding someone who took VSP and also carried the kind of glasses I favored, but this place really hits the mark. Plus, did I mention it has free parking and is located inside a odd korean flea market type store? May not sound like a pro to you, but in my mind, I see free parking and a chance to try out a weird ass food court! Cons: VSP rate is slightly lower here with a covered rate of 120 and 20% off afterwards. All in all, I love love love this place! read more

Been coming here since I was a child. They have great selections of name brand glasses to contact lenses. I prob bought chanel, gucci, bulgari and more stuff from here. They do get pricy, about $800+ for glasses. But it's all worth it :) great customer service (all the old guys here knew me since I was little so they're like my uncles). As for the optometrist, Michelle Kim, the daughter of the owner is the best. She will take real good care of you. Shes also very professional & sweet. I used to live in koreatown and had my frames once before done at gold optometry and it was mediocre but they have a really nice selection of frames. Too bad you're never going to get them! *the optometrists themselves are fantastic at what they do and they're very thorough and always do what's best for you. It's the staff that has issues. **FIRSTLY** So I had been wearing circle lenses and the optometrist convinced me to just go back to glasses, which I was fine with. So I picked out what I thought were the perfect frames, which were a Matte Black and thick-rimmed. I picked them out, told the man that I wanted them in that texture and color and then he handled my prescription. They said that I would receive the frames in 3 days, and the glasses came out to be about $500. **SECOND** So I went back to Arizona where I live and 4 days later I got in the mail: BROWN, THIN-RIMMED PLASTIC frames. They were the wrong design and color! So I called and asked what had gone wrong, as I described my actual order. They said "Oh well that company doesn't make that design anymore so we sent you those" (thinking they could just fool me into forgetting what I payed for?!) And I talked with the man that handled my order and he apologized and then gave me a list of design names that were similar to see if I could recognize which frames exactly I had ordered so they could re-order them. **THIRD** I picked out the name of the frames I thought were the closest thing to what I wanted, told him, and then he said "They don't have those in matte black either"...... "THEN WHY IN THE WORLD WOULD YOU SEND ME A LIST OF THINGS YOU DON'T HAVE?" And this whole ordeal went on for about 2 months. **FOURTH** Now, the man who handled everything is a korean man, about middle-aged. I can speak korean fluently so there was never a misunderstanding when we talked over the phone. Then one of the times I called, a younger male answered in english. "I'm Mr. ___" (no names in the review) me: No you're not, Mr. ___ is middle aged and only speaks korean "Explain your situation please" I explained and then right in the middle this guy says "OMG Mr. ___ I can't handle this here" Oh. So now the workers also LIE. They lied to me twice. They sent the wrong glasses on purpose, then when I asked Me: Can you just please send the model I tried on with prescripted lenses? I don't mind if they're not brand-new, I just really like the style "We can't find them" Me: What do you mean you can't FIND them I tried them on in your store!" "Well we don't have them good bye." **FINAL STRIKE** I just wanted bigframed, black, matte glasses. So Mr. ___ said that the company is now making matte frames and that I would have (my substitute frames, not even the original ones I ordered) them within 2 weeks. It is now ONE MONTH later. I called and this time some random guy picks up, asks for my birthday for info, then OH ok I'm supposed to wait 3 MONTHS for these glasses. My mission : BUYING KOREAN FRAMES FOR MY BROTHER IN VIETNAM. I am from Vietnam, and just landed in San Diego for 4 months so everything is quite new for me. After sorting out some shops, i quickly decided to drive up to LA. I've been looking for Korean-made eyeframes for my brother in my country as a gift, with difficullt criteria : brown/black + plastic + his favourite style + cheap. Technically, finding frames for yourself is difficult, finding frames as a gift for someone is even double-times difficult. Luckily, Andrew Lee greeted me firstly (i didn't know Andrew Lee has received a lot of stars on Yelp). He even spent almost 45 minutes without any signs of complaint, by trying and trying, 1 by 1, just for the frame i was looking for. So i ended up with buying 2 eyeframes at 140usd (without lenses) instead of 1 as my plan. Furthermore, he was willing to exchange the frame the next day, when my brother disliked 1 of the frames. I am not used to giving out stars or commenting, but i am very happy to give 5 stars for GOLD OPTOMETRY for cheap prices & 10 stars for ANDREW LEE for great service. Probably cuz there was little to no customers at the time I went (Sun. ~1:30/2pm), but someone came out right away and greeted me cheerfully. Somehow someone recognized my name as a reviewer and they immediately and sincerely apologized for my experience last time I was here. This made me feel much better. I was upset for the long wait and the lack of acknowledgement from my last experience (I can't help it, I'm used to having someone acknowledge me right away, even if they tell me to wait, at least they are aware I was there). So I raised one star from a three star for this better treatment. Andrew Lee was an awesome representative and definitely made me feel better. Though I do feel guilty for my lack of patience from my previous visit and thus the review below (it was pretty busy then, to be honest), I'm grateful that the reps were friendlier and made my time worth it when I went this time around. Original review: 1/7/12 I only go here because we have insurance through here and all other optometry places in K-town is as unfriendly and costly as the next, and because I live near here. Every time I go there, I feel like I have to wait forever, not to mention the staff aren't that friendly, but what should I expect, unless you look expensive, they won't treat you all that well, these Koreans (fyi, I am one). I went in to get a box of my contacts, Acuvue Oasys, because I thought it would be cheap and my insurance would cover it... guess not. It was $40 (eek!) and I had to wait for it. Was here last week for an eye exam to get prescriptions for glasses and contacts. $60 total paid for this which seems fantastic, beats Costco and most other places with zero pressure to buy from them. Not just for Koreans too, though mostly Korean customers and all Korean staff, though the people I spoke with speak like native English speakers in case that is an issue for some. I called ahead and they got my paperwork ready over the phone to speed up my wait time. Impressive. Spoke to Jay, who also helped me when I walked in. I saw someone complain that the place is in an indoor Korean mall. So? Easy lot parking, and just south of Wilshire on Western makes it convenient. Interior is welcoming and with marble floors and a super clean setup with plenty of chairs for waiting (including padded leather chairs) and great A/C, I was happy. On a busy Saturday, they had only 2 people ahead of me since Jay put me in the system 15 minutes before I came in. He even recognized it was my birthday the day before. Dr. Kim did my eye exam with very modern and clean equipment. She was super friendly and caring, and I did not feel rushed. She really examined my eyes too using a few different machines and discussed various contact lens options (daily vs longer). She gave me samples of both types too and made sure my trial pair fit well. No hard up selling too. Really liked her. In summary - just the best eye exam experience ever. Michelle was best eye doctor. I have only been to 4-5 different eye doctor since my eyes were pretty good until after college too. But, everytime i went, I was disappointed and I felt like I over paid for the service always. Except with Michelle Kim. She took time. She gave her opinion, But dont force you to buy anything like other shops. Apparenlty My eye werent that bad as last eye doctor who took like 5 min or less on my eye exam even after i complained about fatigue and redness in eye. I didnt have to complain, she already knew that my eyes were little red and checked very carefully. I don't really buy glasses but I heard from others that they are very reasonable on pricing and has various types of glasses after i refer them to this shop. Staffs were nice, open Late!! read more

I made the mistake of coming in after checking Yelp and Google on their hours...only to realize the optometrist is only available until 6pm during the week. Makes sense but doesn't say that anywhere online and I didn't bother calling because they are just a stop on my way. Great thing about this place is you don't have to make an appointment. They do accept insurance. And the optometrist that checked my eyes a few years ago was great! They are a bit hidden, all the way in the back of the mall. But I appreciate that the store stays open until 8pm for when I have to pick up contacts. read more

After posting this review Dr. Kim immediately emailed me and explained that there was a misunderstanding and that the new guy who was helping me was confused. She apologized and emailed me a copy of my rx. My VERY COSTLY frame broke! What shall I do?! I decided to stop by Gold Optometry to get new frames. It was about time (3years). I didn't have much money and I sure as heck couldn't get out of my work just for my ultra blindness and a broken frame! This place opens until 8PM which was very convenient for me to go after work. There was no customers around 6:30pm-ish so I was immediately helped. I asked Richard that I had no money replace the frame and lens. Plus, I recently got my lenses replaced. Because of my extremely poor eyesight, just my lens alone costs me $300 without any special treatment besides compressing. =( I told him I just needed inexpensive frames that can fit my current, in good condition, lenses. He took about 10 minutes to pick out some frames. He came back with two that were both lightweight (plastic) and flexible and both under $100. He didn't rush me as I tried to figure out which frame to get. For a good 10minutes, I kept switching back and forth from frame to frame to see which made me look like less of a geek and comfortable, no sliding or slipping off when I look down. After choosing my frame, it took about another 5minutes for him to put my lenses into the new glasses and I was on my way! Did I mention he gave me a discount, too? Without me asking for it!! Usually you'd have to get on your knees and plead for a discount in korean places! =) read more

A lot of time you go to the doctor and they talk to you as if you went to medical school and you leave not understanding anything they said, that will not happen to you here. Considering the luck I've had with medical professionals since moving to the LA area I was not happy when my eye decided to become infected a month ago. After doing some self diagnosing on the Internet I concluded that I had Viral Conjunctivitis and should probably go to the eye doctor at this point since both eyes were beginning to look like I was a class A stoner (I'm not and not opposed to those who are, but it looks bad to try to come to my job like that). After reading the reviews on yelp I called a couple other places first who said they couldn't see me on such short notice and said maybe next week. What the hell!! My damn eye feels like its gonna fall out and the closest thing you got is next week??!!! Lame But then I call Gold and they say sure no problem and squeeze me in a hour and a half later! Awesome! Turns out, I didn't have Viral Conjunctivitis, I had an allergy to my contacts stemming from A. Wearing them for longer than the allotted 2 weeks (hey, I'm on a budget) and B. Using a generic solution that effed up the PH of the contact. So basically my eye was was like eff this call me when you get some glasses so I can heal. As for the staff, Dr.Kim was so nice and thorough and was very detailed about what was wrong with my eye, how long it would take to heal, price of meds etc. She also informed me that I was wearing the wrong prescription and actually needed something stronger. She also made sure that I would have the right pH with the proper cleaning solutions. I was forced to get glasses (had to stay off the contacts for 2 weeks, Dr's orders) but I did find something cute and in my budget (I have no eye insurance, so you know I was going for cheap) so in total I spent around 300. 65 for the initial appt (Dr. Kim told me 35 but I guess it included the follow up since I didn't pay for that one) and the rest for the glasses plus tax. Overall the experience was the best I've had in regard to medical offices/personnel in LA thus far. No joke, I will definitely be going here from now on. read more

I have been to several optometrists since my first eye prescription, but I wouldn't recommend any other place if not Golden Optometry. The owner is always very welcoming and Dr. Kim knows exactly what she's doing. Dr. Kim is very knowledgeable and treats her patients with care. Every time I visit the office it's packed with people, specially on weekends, and yet she goes through each patient smoothly with not complaints or frustration. She actually takes the time to explain what the symptoms are and how to treat it. Golden Optometry doesn't force you or push to get new glasses or contacts like other places. They normally give you some discount and work with you to choose whatever fits your budget. My husband and I just got our 4th pair of glasses from Gold Optometry. Together we had purchased 8 pairs of glasses from them. We haven't lived in Koreatown in years but still make the drive back because we like them that much. Talk about loyalty! Neither of us are loyal to any optometry prior to Gold Optometry. - OPTOMETRIST: We have seen by a couple of different optometrists here over the years. One of whom I quite like since she's super thorough and of course very nice. I heard she's moving away so I hope they will find someone as good to replace her. - GLASSES: They offer a nice and variety selection of glasses. I requested for something on-trend while durable to withstand my little toddlers' curious hands. I'm quite happy with my latest pair that Tommy helped picked out. It was expensive but they were nice to apply a small discount and did not charge me for UV coating (if I'm not mistaken). If you do it politely, it doesn't hurt to ask. They also put on those nose pads for me so the glasses could sit in my flat nose bridge. Once I purchased a pair of sunglasses that didn't come with the nose pads and the charge was about $20. Totally worth and they did a wonderful job. - SERVICE: Service is where they excel here. The owners should really give Richard and Tommy a raise. If we come back, it's because of them. When we first came, it was Jey who helped us out. On top of being professional and polite, they're extremely nice and genuinely so. They are really good at what they do. I haven't been to any optometry who would fix my old glasses. They repaired and polished my old glasses so when I picked up my new ones, my old ones come back looking new too! I am grateful and can't thank them enough! ! No matter how careful I am, my curious kids always manage to get their hands on my glasses. I always need back-ups. :) great place to go if you're in need for some repairs or new glasses! Before finding this place I checked out another optometrist that was charging me for things I didn't need! I just wanted some nice looking glasses at an affordable price! Even with a groupon coupon of 50% off the frames ( went down from 230.00 to 115.20my total would of come out to 370!?? So I said goodbye to them and found this place! Thank goodness I did! I decided to keep my old frames to save some $$ and just have them put in some new lenses and my total came out to.... :drum roll:::::: 90$!!! :) so much better...was that so hard? I'm still waiting to pick them up but so far so good... wonderful service, great selection (from what I saw) and really cute turtle figurine collection! this place has personality unlike the stale cold place i went before. read more

If you're looking to buy a new pair of glasses, be sure to check out Gold Optometry in ktown. They have GREAT customer service and really know how to take care of their clients. My wife had purchased a pair of plastic frame glasses from Gold in August 2013, but recently the right leg broke off from the frame at the hinge. She thinks that it was because of normal wear and tear, but I decided to ask them to see what they could do anyway. Even though it wasn't fixable, they still took care of us. Specifically, Andrew Lee was very kind and patient and made sure that we left fully satisfied with the service that he provided. I HIGHLY recommend him. My parents and I always go here to get our glasses and contact lenses. It is only $150 for a checkup and several months' worth of contact lenses or glasses. They also do special order contact lenses and ship them out to you free of charge. The salespeople are cordial but the best part about this place is DR. KIM! Wow. I've finally found my go to contacts and glasses place. The prices here are amazing, the doctor that I saw was very friendly, and best of all, Andrew, the person that helped me, was soooo friendly, that he probably was a huge factor in making this a good experience for me. As soon as I came in, Andrew was very patient and kind in listening to my contact dilemma (I got an allergic reaction in my eyes three years ago from wearing contacts too much and so since then I've only worn glasses, but I've recently been wanting to be able to switch back). He is probably the nicest person I've met at an optometry place. Not only was the customer service awesome, but I was able to find contacts here that miraculously did not induce an allergic reaction in my eyes. I've been to multiple different stores that let me try their good contact samples, but they all hurt my eyes after twenty minutes. However, the contacts that the doctor let me try (Dr. Christine? Not sure) were so comfortable. If you need new contacts or glasses, don't hesitate to come here! I would advise coming during the weekday and during the day if you want to save time, because they can get pretty busy here. read more

Called to make an eye exam appointment, but was told weekends were walk-in only. Showed up on a mildly busy, yet chaotic Saturday afternoon. Stood/sat around for 20 minutes, but failed to get anyones attention or interest. Expect a typical (lack of) organization and service that's prevalent at most Korean businesses- where only the loudest (Korean speaking- despite reviews saying otherwise) voice in the room will get attention. Which is generally fine at say, an auto body shop or your favorite dive bar, but probably not what you'd want from your optometrist. Wish I could comment on the actual service/products, but won't be coming back. read more
