Not only am I impressed by her professionalism as a doctor but also her extreme understanding and kindness as a business owner. I was able to bring up a few concerns and feedbacks on things they needed to work on in terms of being more attentive to customers on such a busy day (Saturday, when most people are free). She took my criticism extremely well and thanked me for my understanding of the situation and for informing her directly. She also made sure to let me know that they have been working/trying to figure out a better solution and system to insure that customers won't feel ignored when they are busy. Dr. Michelle even took the extra time to reach out to me directly and thanked me again for my understanding and patience. Been coming here for years, and it's always a great experience with my yearly eye exams. Dr. Michelle Kim is hands down one of the best optometrists in all of Los Angeles. She is extremely thorough and precise with your exam, and not to mention one of the nicest human beings out there. Not only is she extremely knowledgeable with all of your vision needs, but Dr. Kim is always up to date with the latest contact lens brands as well - she's simply just an expert within that field. Never from all of my visits have I ever felt rushed w/ Dr. Kim (which a lot of Dr.s do these days for some reason?) and I've always left with a peace of mind that my vision is in good hands for years to come. I recently went to Gold Optometry to get my eyes checked for the first time in over a decade and to get my first pair of glasses. I was really intimidated as someone that's never worn glasses and with my wonky insurance. However, everyone that helped me was welcoming and accommodating. My appointment was running late but everyone including Dr. Michelle Kim was apologetic. When I went in for my eye exam Dr. Kim was nice and thorough -- she made sure I was comfortable and didn't let me leave without having all my questions answered. I did run into some issues with my insurance, but they were really helpful in trying to work with me and my budget. I needed to get a pair of glasses and the associate led me to a separate area filled with more affordable frames. He told me to try on, choose, and bring back the glasses I wanted then left. Honestly, I loved this because it gave me time and alleviated any pressure I could feel as I tried on every and any glasses I wanted. I appreciated the extensive collection of glasses they have both in designer brands and in the affordable section. Often times when you need affordable anything you have to skimp on style but not here. After trying on glasses to my heart's content, I found the ones I wanted and took them back to the main area. My glasses would be ready for pick up in 3 days after 12pm. When I got there my glasses weren't ready yet, but it gave me time to talk to the associate about my insurance. The person that helped me was so incredibly helpful and really put in the time to help me figure out what was happening. Then when my glasses were ready, he really took the time to explain how to wear and care for my new glasses. He had me try on the glasses and spent a lot of time adjusting the glasses to fit my face. Then he thoroughly cleaned the glasses before giving them to me. Both times I left with the feeling that everyone really wanted to help me. If you're looking for a luxury boutique experience this is not that place but if you're looking for a knowledgeable, straightforward, and professional experience with an extensive glasses collection this place is great. A couple things to note is everyone speaks English well; they will answer the phone in Korean but if you speak to then in English, they will quickly switch to English to accommodate you. The place is located in what feels like a 60+ small shopping center community which made it hilarious and incredible. This review update is longggg overdue. We went back 9 months after getting our glasses back in September of 2011 because we were told we had 1 year warranty on these glasses in case anything ever happened to them. My BF's glasses broke for no real reason.. (the nose part just snapped.. cheap frame?????) So we went to go get it fixed about 30 minutes before closing time. -STRIKE ONE- Once we walked in I noticed that these people NEVER GREET YOU. Maybe because it's close to closing time? Maybe they're just doing that to us? Whatever the reason, that's very unprofessional and not cool. Anyway, we walk up to the SAME GUY who's helped us before (and he looks at us with the OH-IT'S-YOU face) and we tell him the problem, they tell us they will fix it but we have to leave the glasses there overnight. HELLOOOO?? How is my BF supposed to drive back and forth without his glasses? yeaaa.......... and all of a sudden they can do it in about 20-30 minutes. -STRIKE TWO- What does that tell you? It's a simple fix but they're too LAZY to do it for the customer right away so they're pushing it to the next day. wow.. -STRIKE THREE- youuuu'rrrrree outtttt!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! When another guy takes my BF's glasses to get it fixed.. this DUDE whom we had problems with before CONFRONTED US about this 1 star review I've written monnnnths ago. Like.. ok?? He said he brought it up to clear up any misunderstandings and to apologize... but his ATTITUDE was the TOTAL OPPOSITE! Everyone is so nice here. I'm so glad I found Dr. Michelle Kim. She is super friendly and informative with whatever is going on with your eyes. I have astigmatism and it's gotten worse :( she is super honest and answers your questions the best way she can. I also love the fact that they accept medi-cal. Walked in without an appointment. In order to be an optometrist, it must be a requirement to be super nice because Dr. Michelle Kim was incredibly nice. She was very thorough in her examination. She did tests I had never gotten done at another optometrists before and explained to me why she included them. I told her my concerns about dryness and she gave me 2 different daily contacts to try out. I like to keep a copy of my prescription; so when I asked for it, they gave me the original copy. Once I was done with trying out the two different contact lenses, I called the optometry for my order and it was available 2 business days later. This place is popular amongst a lot of regulars and older Korean adults, so there can possibly be a wait for the walk-in eye examination, but my experience was totally worth the wait. I've been going here for about 9 going on 10 years. I like that you can get a quick and comprehensive eye exam and your glasses and contacts in the same place. Truth be told, I have been buying my frames at LA Eyeworks' annual blowout sale in October. So all I need is a prescription, glass lenses and contacts. Today, I was finally going to watch Tron: Legacy in IMAX 3D. Having had a poor experience wearing 3D glasses with my regular glasses for Toy Story 3, I absolutely had to wear contacts. I couldn't find any old contacts around, so I prayed that my prescription was still current at Gold. The first guy I talked to said that it wouldn't be until next week since they had run out of many brands. But the second person I spoke to said they had my prescription and contact lenses in stock. I picked them up within a few minutes and sped off to watch the most excellent light cycle and disc arena scenes. Gold Optical saved my Tron: Legacy experience from being a poor one. Let me tell you my experience, as to why I will no longer come here. What do you get when you have a business that doesn't focus on the customer, but rather works to keep their racket employees on payroll? You get a business that deserves to be shot in the back because of its incompetence and inability to survive and thrive in this economy. To me, I speculate that Gold Optometry is a sales driven company; this is evident by the ratio of salesman to optometrist. Look at Costco, Walmart, or any other optometrist. Their business model, is that either the sole proprietor or owner is a doctor. I have been a customer of this place for several years. Earlier this year, I came here with my fiancee to both get new prescriptions and glasses. It is to my misfortune, that I was able to witness firsthand how these salesman will blatantly disregard eye exam queue to customers who speak their native language. My evidence for this, is solely based on the fact that my fiancee and I arrived at the same time for both an eye exam and glasses. Here is how the waiting queue supposedly is structured for this business. Once a customer requests an eye exam, their file will be placed in a shelf by the exam room door. The "funny business" that I witnessed that day, is that one of their associates would bring a new file into the shelf, but seem to scramble to form a new order. The first time it happened, I had no reason to suspect that this behavior was alarming. As newer patients arrived and some patients happened to go in earlier than me, the exact moment that I caught them red-handed was when my eye exam did not occur immediately after that of my fiancee's. For the first time in my 20 years of wearing glasses, I have never faced this poor service. Mind you, that this place does not take reservations, as whenever I would call ahead, they give me the generic message of "the wait is only 30 minutes." I was in a livid rage and demanded to speak to that associate who minutes before had swapped the files in the shelf. What does this associate do, as a deer caught in the headlights? He saved face by apologizing before the exam, after the exam, while purchasing the glasses, and when I picked up the glasses. It appears to me that native Korean speakers had received priority on this day, and that Korean-Americans and non-Koreans were pushed to the end. Considering that I have a Korean last name and my fiancee has a non-Korean last name, I suspect that this had been the case. Had my eye exam continued immediately after that of my fiancee, I would have not spoken up and taken the time to review Gold Optometry here on Yelp. Imagine if you are an unsuspecting customer, and you enter a business whose tactics are similar to that of a con-artist enticing you to gamble in a shell game. Perhaps the con-artist, who would want to work hard to scheme to make a profit, got complacent and lazy having pulled the same scam. That is the honest impression that I had leaving Gold Optometry that day. I better understand the horrors of Plessy v. Ferguson and the Black Lives Matter movement based on what I experienced that day. I understand what it feels like to be placed at the end of the queue based on me not being the same race and culture as that of the employees of this business. read more

Especially a dude named Chris - my sunglasses felt too tight on me after being hit in the face with my sunglasses on. The guy kept walking back and forth from the work station to the waiting area (about 20ft) adjusting mm by mm. I think he did this like 5 times before I was like "you know what - should I just go to the station so you don't have to walk back and forth so many times?" I have eyemed insurance and this was an option close to me. I called the morning of a Wednesday and was able to get an appointment for the evening that day. I went in and was able to see the Eye Doctor. I never had a problem with my vision and really only went to see if I could get sunglasses. Thought out the exam i was found to have a very insignificant far sighted blur. She said I could live my life without prescription but gave it to me anyways and said i could just get sunglasses if i wanted to. I definitely wanted some Ray Bans and I ended up picking the Gold Aviator frames. As I pondered I asked if I could get the prescription but make them polarized. To which the attendant said "OF COURSE". I ended up paying ~130$ which I don't think is too bad. If i didn't get the prescription it would have been ~98$. It took about 2 weeks for them to fulfill the order. I think if i come back again I will buy a frame from Nordstrom Rack and just have them change the lenses. You can buy a frame from the Rack (name brand) for 60-120$. read more

As what I would consider myself a fledgling adult, I really struggled a bit figuring out the whole vision insurance game. Fortunately I found out that Gold accepts my plan and thus I made my merry way over to get my check-up and contacts updated. Parking is readily available in the parking lot so that's always a plus, especially here in Los Angeles. Once you make it to the mall complex, head straight to the back of the building and you'll find Gold. Mind you, my Korean is at an elementary proficiency so I had to wait a tad for someone who spoke English but the staff there was extremely hospitable and patient in communicating with me. Once I got situated, I was able to get my exam done by Dr. Na. She's extremely sweet and definitely took my anxiety in strides as I always panic when faced with the dreadful questions of "which is better, 1 or 2?" Extremely rude and unprofessional staff. I had a contact rip and my last prescription was from here. I didn't have my most recent prescription and I wanted to see the doctor to see if I could get a sample pair to hold me over until I got home. It was a rainy day and I was driving and absolutely need my contacts to see, so I could avoid an accident. I asked to see the doctor and he refused to send her out. Instead of assisting me, one of the employees decided to berate me in front of other customers and started talking about me to the other employees in Korean. When I tried to get assistance from the other employees, every one of them walked away and would not make eye contact with me or talk to me. After 15 minutes of trying to get one of the 5 employees to acknowledge me, I realized that it was futile and I left. I simply called another optometrist and they helped out without any of the fuss. The scheduling here is horrendous. It is so bad, you might get fired from your job if you come here for an appointment. I called yesterday to schedule a Saturday appointment, but they were booked for two weeks. Then they asked if I could come Tuesday at 12:30. I arrived at 12:25 and was told they were behind schedule so it would be another 30 minutes. At 1:40, I decided to leave because it would have been unacceptable if I missed my 2PM meeting. This isn't the first time I waited over an hour here. I'm not sure why they don't have a process where they just call you and tell you they are 1.5 hours behind so you can cancel or reschedule. The reps are really good. They never pressure you to buy expensive things, and they always are willing to adjust your glasses. However, I am finding a new optometrist who actually has a system to avoid having patients wait long hours. You aren't my PCP, and there are literally hundreds of other options. read more

As a Korean American who barely speaks Korean I was hesitant to coming here, but my sister recommended this place so I trusted her and gave it a chance. Don't let the general customers of old grandmas and grandpas fool you, the optometrists speak English and are super friendly! Alex and Jay were great and patient especially with me trying contacts the first time. And weren't pushy by any means regarding choices of glasses, whether or not I should get both, and payment. But I must say the 5 stars goes to Dr. Kim. The highly knowledgeable and warm greeting she made me feel. As though it was like my mom is giving me the eye exam (without the usual nagging a mother gives a son lol). She made me feel that comfortability to ask any questions and make me want to come back any time I need to. I'd 100% recommend this place to people young, old, Asian or Non-Asian. The set up of this place is unfriendly and makes shopping for frames very difficult. All of the sunglass frames are behind the counter! One sales person said I could go behind the desk to look but after I had looked at just one shelf, another sales person shooed me out. He proceeded to try and help me and spent 10 minutes showing me just three pairs of frames that were all much too wide. He eventually said "I don't have anything for you" and so I left. Out of the hundreds of pairs of sunglass frames they had behind the counter there must've been something that would've worked for me but because I was unable to browse myself or have someone really try to show me the stock, this place lost a customer. read more
