Honestly wasn't the biggest fan; The shop itself was very small and cramped, the aesthetics were hitting all the markers of a good shop but the general aura wasn't it to be honest I was sensing some tensity. Went in for some flash with a few friends because of the advertisement on their page. When we walked in there was only one artist available. They were seemingly very overwhelmed at the amount of people in the shop. Additionally, the tattoo I did get here I have since covered up because in my opinion it was poorly executed. Went here for the first time just yesterday and loved it. I already knew my tattoo artist for years, but this was my first time at this "new to me" location. It is smaller than you think inside (from looking outside) but it's got great decor, plenty of space for the artists and their stations, and a really great staff. Bathroom was really clean and nicely decorated, and nothing of the shop gave me any hesitation in regard to sanitary practices or sketchy vibes. There is an ATM on site so that's a plus if you need to last minute get some cash. In the area there's ample street parking and walking distance to food/liquor store if you're like me and got some low blood sugar part way through the session and needed a little snack! The staff were all very friendly and super funny. Sometimes I had to put my headphones in so I would stop laughing and hold still for my artist! It's the first session of probably two, so I will be back - but def looking forward to it! My artist was Hondre btw and he's awesome! In town for a mini getaway and getting my roman numerals was thee best way to end my trip. I was having brunch and across the street was Gold Stripe Tattoo. I did some research and came across some of Paul aka Weezy's artwork. I walked in, let him know my idea, showed him the placement and asked him for an estimate. He was very helpful and honest. I got some cash and walked right back in the shop to get my tattoo. Weezy was quick and precise. His artwork is just amazing. His lines are clean. After 10 years of being turned away from various tattoo artists to cover up 3 lines of solid black Old English lettering on my left arm, I was fortunate enough to find Tim. Before I even realized he was a contestant on Ink Master Season 5, I found him on a local site for San Diego Tattoo artists. I was impressed with his bio, especially since he specialized in cover-up. I reached out and set an appointment. I went to Gold Stripe Tattoo in North Park and met Tim. At the time I was open to hear his professional opinion as to what, if anything, he could do to effectively cover up the letters. I wanted to get a tat done reflecting my 21+ years of service in the US Navy. I have a fondness to a ship I served on from 96-99, the USS O'BRIEN (DD-975). We set a short appointment in May 2016 so he can commence with the cover-up. In June 2016, he came up with the outline of the ship and explained to me how he saw the finished work. More importantly, how it would cover-up what I needed. The original location of the black letters were on my left arm, but on the inside forearm, just below the bend of the elbow. The cover-up, in order to give the best realistic view, was going to go from my wrist to just before the armpit. The sitting took approximately 6 hours of outlining the entire ship. After this sitting, he explained to me that he could either do straight SoCal Style Black and Greys or he can do color. He gave me the pros and cons of each choice and left it up to me to think about it and let him know for the next session. I came back in July 2016 and decided to go with a color background (the water around the ship) and to keep the ship the obvious Haze Grey. I asked him to add the Battle Ensign (a very large US Flag) to look as if it was unfurled and waving. We got started with the coloring and shading of the ship. This was definitely the longest sitting I have done for a tattoo. This session took about 10 hours. Around the 8 hour mark he was done with the ship and he gave me the option of finishing up with adding the water surrounding the ship or come back for another session. I opted to tough it out and have him finish the tattoo and add the water background. The finished product is simply amazing and I couldn't be happier!! His art work and talent captured every detail and essence of my favorite ship! The pain after that 7th hour of my 2nd session was definitely well worth it. I have received nothing but rave reviews and great feedback as to the work that Tim has done. You cannot see the black letters and you wouldn't even know they were there, if you've never seen them before. For those that do remember what I previously had, they have a very hard time in making out the letters, which is what I wanted. Now, on to the studio and the artist. I want to give a shout out to Genghis and the artists at Gold Stripe Tattoo. They say first impressions are everything and her place hit it out of the park, for me. She has a great looking and very welcoming studio. She and the other artists are very professional and, from what I've seen, treated their respective clients, potential clients and vendors with professionalism and the respect they deserve. As far as working with Tim, you would think that TV fame would've have gone straight to his head. Maybe you would think that you would have to be ready to deal with an overbearing "celebrity" tattoo artist. On the contrary, Tim is a very down to earth artist who not only takes pride in his work but really listens to his clients and to their ideas. To his credit, he uses his experience, creativity and vision to put the clients wishes down on paper to ensure he and the client are on the same page. He was receptive when I asked to add the Battle Ensign to the forward mast of the ship, even though we had never talked about it, beforehand. He basically walked me through the entire process, session by session. He explained the why, what, and where he was going with the work. I was very comfortable and at ease during my every dealings with Tim. I couldn't ask for a better tattoo experience, than I had with him. I highly recommend him and his work for your next tattoo. Let me preface this with, I DO NOT WRITE REVIEWS. Unless it is beyond unbelievable, I usually give my reviews verbally; by spreading the word on a spot or service I'm into. That being said, Gold Stripe Tattoo exceeded my expectations. I have only been tattooed by Nyck but the entire experience is a great one. I have been tattooed all over the country and no one has come close to Nyck's hands (don't be gross). He has a light touch so that if there is any pain, it's barley felt. I should note, I have a high pain tolerance, but I think that even someone who is more susceptible to pain would still have a great experience. He listens to your vision and improves it, he works with you and it's easy to stay in touch. You will leave with a killer tat, something you're proud to have. I have only been tattooed by Nyck but have met most of the artists and they are a crazy fun bunch. Genghis is the bad ass boss lady; she doesn't pull punches or sugar coat anything. She's determined and knows the business. I've seen her with clients and shows them the vision of what their tattoo will become. Adam and Hondre's work is professional and the lines are clean (I've seen their work on actual clients...it's insane what a tattoo gun is capable of with a great artist behind it). Clint has some unbelievable work, he tattooed an 80 year old grandma (who took it like a champ) and it was beautiful. I stopped in one day expecting to get a small tattoo and had the pleasure of meeting Paul. Paul took my idea and transformed it into something much bigger. I ended up with two mermaids and a pearl in a shell on my chest, under my breast. Paul worked with me and we the tattoo in two sessions. Minus set up, it took roughly five hours. He worked with price and his philosophy is if he quotes you for six and it goes beyond that, he doesnt charge you extra. I went to a tattoo/ pole dance show hosted by Gold Stripe Tattoo and fell in love with Tim's white charcoal artwork. I basically love every single thing of his piece so I only wanted some minor changes to make the tattoo more personal. Tim totally got what I wanted and the design came out perfect. It was my first tattoo so I was pretty nervous but Tim actually made my experience very comfortable. He is very talented, professional and efficient. The whole process took only around 2.5 hours and seriously, I couldn't believe so beautiful the end-product is. I showed my tattoo to all my pole dancing friends and they all loved it and asked who did my tattoo.
