I love Golden China. They're food is what I grew up on. My favorites are the Mongolian beef, egg rolls and Genaral Tso's chicken. I've noticed some people who are not happy with the buffet selection, although I'm perfectly fine with it for a few reasons. 1. The food has always been much hotter and fresher than any other dedicated buffet. 2. It's so much less expensive. You pay about $5-6 here, where other buffets charge $7.99, plus more on weekeends. That being said, I like them better for the fresh cooked food than the buffet. One meal inside gets you a lot, and can usually be shared between two people. My dad and I came to eat here after seeing a movie in Boaz. We were originally going to eat at Pasquale's, but they closed early today. My dad suggested Golden China upon finding that out, and I was pretty glad we came here after all! We arrived at the restaurant at about 6:30 PM or so, and we were instantly seated by a female waitress. I ordered a Dr. Pepper at first, but I recall my dad saying how good the sweet tea was, so I changed it to that. I thought it was excellent, and their tea has this unique flavor to it that is unlike others I've had. The tea itself is strong, but there is also just enough sweetness to where it doesn't override the tea. The lemon makes it even better, and they put it on the side of the cup nice and neatly. As we waited for our food, some traditional Chinese music was playing in the background, fortunately not too loudly so my dad and I could talk without having to get loud. I ordered the teriyaki chicken meal with hot and sour soup and an egg roll. They gave me the egg roll first, and I let my dad have the soup. The egg roll was huge, and I decided to cut it in half so I could put some soy sauce in each side. It was exactly what I would expect in an egg roll and more. About 10 minutes later, my main dish arrived. I ended up eating about half of it before I asked for a to-go box. It may not seem like it at first, but their portions are very generous and will absolutely fill you up. The teriyaki chicken was a bit different than what I was expecting, but I was still satisfied with it. There were plenty of vegetables such as bell peppers and onions. Everything was cooked to perfection and I don't have a thing bad to say about it. Our waitress did well handling everything, although I feel like like she didn't check on us as much as I expect. There is another employee here that my dad and I enjoy seeing: he used to work at the Japan Cajun Grill at the mall, but now he works here. I think his name might be Frankie, but he's the guy that says "Dun-dun-dun-duuunnn!!!" It's his signature catchphrase from way back, and he even remembered my father and I from when we used to get food from Japan Cajun Grill in the early 2010s. Such a funny and nice guy. Speaking of remembering people, the owner of the restaurant also remembered my father by name and treated him very nicely. Since I haven't been to this restaurant since the mid-2000s, he was surprised to see that I was my dad's son. He was happy to meet me. When I checked in on Yelp, it gave me a 10% off coupon which the owner honored without question. Extra points for that! With all of this being said, I love the staff here and they did great with our visit today. Steaming hot food with great portions, delicious tea, worth every Penny. Ordered from here tonight for the first time ever. We used Gadsden to Go. This is the butterflied shrimp which is deep fried. It's laying in the container soaked. It was so soggy we couldn't eat it. There was nothing wrong with this establishment except for the hours that they operate and depending on what time you decide to come in and eat, they might have a full bar and they're full bar is decent, but it is not a Buffay. Trust me! So, depending on when you get there, you might have Half a bar!! Or something like that. It just feels like they don't really want to be open. They don't really want people to have much to choose from. The food was good. I remember that the people working there. Need improvement on customer service. Their mannerisms. Stopped by in Gadsden, AL for a night and checked out this Chinese place because it had three five star reviews. Got three dishes from here: garlic chicken, shrimp with lobster sauce, and chicken chow mien. The first dish was the best out of the three and had good flavor. The chicken was also tasty. The second dish (shrimp) had good shrimp, but was super bland. The lobster sauce had no flavor at all. Usually there is some flavor, but this literally had none. The last dish (chow mien) was straight up bad. Granted we ordered 20 mins before the place closed and all the food was ready in like 7 minutes, so it probably wasn't fresh. However, the chow mien was in a wet sauce and tasted as if it had been soaking in there for the whole day. It was mushy and gross. My wife and I took one bite and couldn't eat more. The chicken pieces in the chow mien were at least ok to eat, so we took those out and ate them with rice. Again, I'm not a fan of many restaurants here in Gadsden, but this is another one of the few that I will frequent. We typically order take-out, but have eaten in the restaurant a few times. The outside leaves you questioning, but inside, once seated and the food starts being served, you understand why we love it. It is always hot, fresh, CORRECT, and delicious. We have our go-to dishes--Mongolian Beef, Sesame Chicken, Sweet and Sour Pork, Vegetable Fried Rice, Vegetable Lo Mein, Egg Foo Yung (Chicken), Crab Angles, Hot and Sour Soup, Sizzling Rice Soup, and Egg Drop Soup... I came up from Birmingham for dinner - my date felt like something Chinese, so we came here, to Golden China, over the competition. He had the Mongolian Combination and it was delicious - everything good about Mongolian food on one plate. I had the Crispy Shrimp - Hunan Style, and I wasn't as much a fan. The sauce tasted like sweet and sour sauce with a dash of red pepper - and the shrimp was overmuch battered, I think. This is, by far, the best Chinese food in the area! You might not think so from the outside (as another reviewer mentioned) but you will not be disappointed by the food, service, or pricing. Lunch is a steal, and the dinner portions are family style - you'll have plenty of leftovers! I've yet to try anything on the menu that I didn't like, and I've tried almost all of it. I'm currently sitting in golden China. The food is okay, they don't have good selection at all. The service is terrible. And the outside and inside of the building is disgusting. We live in Alaska, but my mother still lives in Gadsden. We're used to a lot of great Asian restaurants and were pleased to find Golden China in Gadsden. The menu included PAGES of selections, all moderately priced (from an Alaskan perspective). Service was as friendly as one could wish, personable, and helpful. Dinners that are hot for the normal American are marked as such and I ordered a hot Szechwan Beef with some extra fire. Wow! It was as hot as I can eat and delicious! Portions are large. We can't complete a dish each and an appetizer as well. Including a pot of hot tea, one can enjoy a fine Chinese meal in the Deep South. They are a fairly traditional Chinese restaurant and do offer chopsticks if one wishes. There's the mandatory (for the American audience) "fortune cookie" as well. We are especially pleased that it's a family-owned restaurant so the entire family is working somewhere in the restaurant. How cool is that? If you wish a fast, reasonably-priced Chinese meal, you simply can't do better without a long drive from Gadsden, and you'd pay more as well.
