Came to Golden China as a spur of the moment dinner idea and tbh I'm super disappointed. Located off Geer in the Turlock Town Center, Golden China serves typical no frills Chinese fare. The inside is decked out in lucky red and reminded me of those mom-n-pop Chinese restaurants of yore. There's a walk-up counter to place to-go orders. I ordered: Salt n pepper shrimp - I counted 14 head OFF shrimp with 60% onions, NO jalapenos for almost $17. The shrimp looked like the kind you find in a frozen bag at Costco - small and... shrimpy. I get this may be a bastardized version to appeal to the general demographic in Turlock, but I was not impressed. It's what made me write my review right away, I was so shocked by the small amount I got. Chicken chow mein - this was ordered at the counter for the SO after placing my original order over the phone. When he dug into it, it was 40% bean sprouts and barely any chicken, maybe 5 or 6 small pieces... Beef chow fun - same issue of overcompensating with hella bean sprouts. The beef wasn't velveted enough and a bit tough. Taste was fine. Chili oil spilled over in my to-go bag and didn't have much spice at all. All three entrees came in the leftover to-go sized boxes, totaling almost $50 after tax and tip. I understand inflation and all, but cannot justify returning due to the negative value for the amount of food received. It's unfortunate because the service is probably some of the best for a Chinese restaurant. Super friendly over the phone and just as friendly in-person. As Gordon Ramsay would say, "Damn. This was our first time here. The food was not good and tasted like it had been made days ago, i ate a couple of bites and that is it. My daughter ordered eggfoo young and it was flat hard patties with soy/terayaki sauce. The waitress was nice but when I went to pay the lady at register demanded I add a tip before I paid my tab. I told her I have cash for tip and looked annoyed and demanded I add to my credit card. After I refused 3 more times she finally charged my card and again demanded I give her my cash tip. I then told her I left it on table. She said I should have added to my credit card. At this point I was annoyed and told her I am going to get my tip back and not leave anything. What I don't like is their garlic chicken, should be called, spicy garlic, chicken skin! There is rarely any pieces of chicken when I order this. I rarely order it because it has no chicken. I don't know why they call it garlic chicken. It's a deep fried chicken, skin and fat. Somebody should talk to the owner about this and start adding chicken to this dish. I like everything else at the restaurant the atmosphere and the cleanliness.But sometimes trying to go cheap on a chicken plate by not putting the chicken doesn't make any sense to me. I have to say this is one Chinese restaurant that I highly recommend anyone coming to. It is very difficult for me to give such high rating for a Chinese restaurant since they are "a dime a dozen". However, this place was a recommendation from someone at work. Interestingly, enough, I don't remember seeing one item that I ordered, even though it was served, "peking ribs". Growing up in Fresno, I remember my grandparents taking the entire family out to eat at Golden China. This would have been in the early 1980s. I went with my Mom for a Mother's Day lunch, and was not disappointed! I ordered the Kung Pao tofu, and it was honestly the best Chinese food meal I've ever had! The noodles were pan-fried, just like I remembered, the tofu was cooked well, and the veggies were excellent! My mom had the bean sprout chow mein, which is her go to meal. Food is very tasty with good sized portions. I love their lunchtime (before 3:30pm) they offer a variety of items! Place is a little on the older side, carpet all throughout the restaurant. Genius idea though to have menus placed under the glass top on each table, we always have a menu to look at and we don't need to touch it! I have been here in the past and typically enjoy it, however after my experience tonight I will not be going back. We ordered sweet and sour pork and orange chicken. The majority of both items were fried batter with no meat inside. The orange chicken had a strong flavor of soy sauce and tasted nothing like orange. That being said, the chow mein and war wonton soup were both good. When it came time to pay I noticed the bill was substantially more than it should have been, upon asking for a breakdown of the receipt we noticed that none of the pricing on the menu was correct and for each dish it actually cost $3-5 more.
