Is it the best food ever? Nope. But it is great to support a Mom and Pop joint that serves good food at a reasonable price. We arrived early for a pre-golf meal and enjoyed the chilled schooners of Genne. My breakfast sandwich with hot peppers was unique....and my partner enjoyed the Meatball Splash (it's a helluva lot more sauce than a splash). Go enjoy the atmosphere. How have I not been here before, yikes! First time Monday and not our last! Thank you Anita for your awesome service, patience, explanations and undivided attention! Husband and son had burgers, described as delicious and fresh. It was Jumbo night, burgers. (Red, white and blue and Youngstown Tune up, love the name-:), I had the homemade sausage, what a great sandwich. Spicy ( but only a bit) with fantastic Italian seasoning. I loved it. We shared an antipasto salad (I recommend Italian dressing), stuffed hot peppers and Italian greens. Best greens ever, so much garlic, yeah. And of course they had the famous Genoese and me, my regular blah Miller Lite. All in frozen mugs! When we were leaving the bartender (tall, older gent) talked with us for a bit. What a great friendly guy. Made us feel very welcomed. Penguins Bar/restaurant and Ursuline High School. I loved the ambiance, wonderful bar that I would hang at if I didn't live so far, lol. This is an iconic Youngstown bar and eatery that first opened in 1932. Lots of local history and nostalgia here. We joined another couple for lunch today. The food was the same high quality as I remember from years ago. My wife and I both opted for the famous Jumbo chopped steak sandwich with fries, and the other couple had a meatball sandwich with fries and a pepper and egg sandwich. Each of us enjoyed our selections. Good portion size, and the food had a home cooked taste. I had an iced tea to drink today, but on my next visit, I'm going to get a traditional schooner of cold Genesee Cream Ale beer in a frosted glass! read more

The fifth star has been earned based upon the ice cold schooner of Genesee beer that they are so well known for. When I say ice cold, I mean the tiniest of ice chips floating on top of this cold beverage. Only a $1.75 to boot. I also enjoyed their signature sandwich called the Jumbo which is sirloin chop steak with your choice of cheese and condiments with a side of fries. Damn tasty! I have been coming here for years. I worked for Hospice of the Valley and was looking for a place to eat 15 years ago. This place Golden Down popped up. I thought it was Chinese food but boy was I wrong and what a surprise. What a GEM! I started planning my days so I would be in the area to eat here for lunch! I can't even believe there is a bad review! I am Italian and my favorite food is Italian. This place has it ALL! From good ownership to great employees to wonderful food! I highly recommend the chicken parmigiana, the greens pizza, the antipasta salad, and top it off with a piece of homemade chocolate pie! Don't forget to get an Ice cold Schooner to drink. This is one of my favorite places on earth to eat. It's like being with family at grandmas house for Sunday dinner. I'm including a pic of one of the lucky days I happened to be go and the brothers were there who were on their 90s! The pic is from Jan. 21, 2014. I can't say enough good about this place! I used to go to the Golden Dawn quite often. My husband and children used to like the atmosphere and good food. Since it opened again with the new Naples owner I have been there twice. I was there last night and we had pizza and fries. The pizza was so burnt, hard and the cheese and sauce was so dry it was terrible. I wanted to complain but my son gets mad at me when I say I don't like something so I didn't say anything. I ate a piece and brought the rest home to throw away. I will never go there again. They could certainly see that pizza was not editable. read more

When I worked near downtown too many decades ago, our business ordered from here at least once a week. Since the passing of Carmen and Ralph and Golden Dawn's closing, we were thrilled, when it was due to reopen. However, that feeling passed. When ordering takeout, the phone was at times never answered and then disappointment when it was. Pizza was like cardboard, sauce and cheese dry. I thought maybe it was a fluke. So tried it 2-3 more times. Same results. I could almost forgive the attitude in the place, if the food was quality. But it was not. However, when it was back in the old days, everyone mattered to Carmen and Ralph. They treated everyone as though they were important and welcome. That care showed in their attitude and quality of food and service. With so many people passing through those doors, their knowledge of the business and care of customers satisfaction was beyond impressive. They knew us by name and we were all familiar with each other's families too. The food was unequivocally the very best. So were they. They are missed as gentlemen and businessmen. Oh well, different era. Different values. It's a bit of a selfish time now. read more

Stopped in to this restaurant on a whim. It was, hands down, the best restaurant service in years. Judy was an amazing waitress, she was so attentive and knowledgeable. She really cares about the restaurant. The food was amazing, we got the baked cod dinner. It was so much food we left over stuffed. The Scooner beers were also perfect. OK, 1978, getting ready to go downtown to Chappy's, the Brass Lion or the Arcade, but you need a cheap warm-up (if you know what I mean). How about an ice cold (literally, ice on top of the beer) schooner of beer. Oh, yes, it was 75 cents too. Try the pizza and fried mushrooms. I haven't been here for about a year but the last time I was there the waitress (she had to have been 80 if she was a day) also made the pizza. Rumor has it this place is/was a mob hangout. That just adds to the appeal. If you want a slice of old Y-town, stop by on a Saturday before the YSU game for a schooner. read more

One star for this restaurant is one to many. We arrived at dinner time. 5 p.m. A party of 6. There we're 10-12 people eating at the time. We were told that only one server was working immediately upon sitting down. 20 minutes into the experience the owner came over to take our drink orders. He apologized for the wait and promptly got our drinks. Another party of 6 sat down next to us. Another waitress arrived and promptly got their drinks. We we're still waiting to order. 20 minutes later the table beside us received their order! Finally the waitress realized we hadn't even ordered yet. She apologized and promptly took our orders. We thought the nightmare would end there. Wrong. We waited another 25 minutes when our waitress told us she was just waiting on the pizza. It was taking a little longer. 5 minutes go by and she comes out and tells me that the kitchen is just starting our order and the baked fish I ordered Ins't available! Now, an hour in, I'm looking at the menu again! Can i have a cheeseburger? Nope. Out of that too. I settled on a steak sandwich. Dinner finally arrived and hour and a half into our visit. Food was barely ok. Pizza was terrible. Salad had the whole bottom of the head of lettuce in it. The whole core! Our waitress apologized for everything and assured us the owner would be over to talk to us and adjust the bill. We finished dinner and the wait was on again. 25 minutes go by and i was fed up. I got up with my kids and we walked out. My wife stayed behind with the other 2 women to pay the bill. They finally talked to the owner who explained to them that if they came back, he'd comp the bill 100%. He took nothing off our bill. Total visit time. 2 hours 10 minutes. Burgers, pizza and sandwiches. Needless to say, we'll never be back. Customer service is terrible. Owner is a coward who would rather avoid his customers who have problems and keep pouring drinks. Avoid this place at all costs! I almost forgot. We had 2 teenagers with us. They drank 4-5 cokes apiece. We were charged $1 per refill! We paid $13 in refill costs total! The owner refused to take it off. You can't make this stuff up! read more

We came here for breakfast on a Saturday morning and was not impressed at all. We had a party of 6 and it took forever for drinks and service. Upon ordering they only had white toast which was frustrating. When the food came out they forgot one of our party's meal so he had to wait 15 min, when it came out the omelet was small and the white toast was burnt. Also everyone's potatoes were cold and the coffee tasted old. I know people love this place and maybe this is a 1 off, but today's meal was fair to poor. read more

Stopped in on a Saturday evening. This is the sort of time capsule that appears on Kitchen Nightmares. Ordered the broiled red snapper which was way overcooked. They added 6 bucks to the menu price on the check too... didn't argue because I'll never come back. Served the destroyed fish with industrial canned corn and lumpy mashed potatoes. Really very sad but so indicative of Youngstown. 30 bucks for a grade school cafeteria meal. Really one of the shittiest cities for food in Ohio. Go grab a dog at Suzies or a way better menu at Station Square. Hopefully someone will buy this and fire the pretend cooks. read more

Hoo boy, this sure is a slice of run-down 1970's small-town Americana. I wish that I could have tried some of the dinner food, but I was passing through town and wanted breakfast. I ate breakfast here for $2.75. Mind-boggling. Sure, it was just basic diner-type breakfast--scrambled eggs, bacon, toast--but that is a terrific value. I added an order of onion rings just for the hell of it, but they sucked. These were minced-onion and crumbly-coated frozen crap-rings. It seems like a decent enough joint; the service is what you expect but that's not why anybody comes, right? There was quite an eclectic crowd--solo old fogeys sitting at the bar, a couple of high school girls, older and middle-aged couples. Why not? For cheap beer and eats, I'd hang out here too if I lived in town. read more

I just love this family owned establishment which dates back to 1932, and it has to be Youngsrown's longest running restaurant. It's just a great place to go, relax, enjoy friends and a great meal and yes the famous schooner of Genesee beer! So the Naples must be doing something right to have loyal friends and customer back again and again. But I witnessed something last night that sent a cold chill down my back while watching a group dress down a server and then the owner. They even went as far to go on yelp and give a single star which is a total lie. This group couldn't be helped even if they wanted so, they claimed ownership would not acknowledge their complaint which is BS, and while the sever was trying to do everything possible to make their experience as best as possible. But there are some folks no matter what you do to help, they just won't hear it or acknowledge it and here lies the "lie!" Like I said both server and owner did remove whatever they wanted off the bill, and even treated the owner like crap. I actually was with a table next to them and had zero issue with service and thought the food was amazing! Even left a bigger then the usual tip and oh I heard the server received a total of $5 dollars for working her backside off, she did give good service and they treated her horrible. The upside is I heard this group is from out of town so thank goodness and hope they never ever come back to our beloved Golden Dawn! Hmmm opened in 1932, don't you think they must be doing something right with food, atmosphere and being kind and respectful to the people who have been coming for over 90 years! I THINK SO! I just wanted to steal the cute old man behind the counter and take him home with me. His daughter was our bartender and was very friendly. This place is CASH ONLY. But that's OK, because it's CHEAP! Two wines and two bears rang up at only $7. All items on their food menu were at very low prices, too. I wish I had tried the pizza. It looked like cheesy heaven. read more

I have passed this place many times but never thought to go in as its in the middle of a burned out neighborhood in old Youngstown. (Have no fear, riff-raff from the area do not step foot in this place) A friend of mine says lets stop in for a couple of Scnooners, which is Genesee Cream ale Beer in a frosted glass...I was hooked. What I love about the place is the old school feel to it, bartenders wearing white shirts and ties, cash only. It is a place Clint Eastwood would come in for a couple of drinks. It is so friendly you could easily find yourself getting hammered in no time. This is also a place where you can bring your family for breakfast or lunch and they would be very welcoming, but I would suggest bring kids during the day. l cannot comment on food since I only had drinks but it appears to be standard bar fare, going back for more. read more

VALUE DINNING at its finest. The Golden Dawn is a North Side Jewel. Its located within a mile from campus. Dinner and lunch are busy and service can sometimes be slow but you don't mind because most of the servers are much older. There is a full service bar that gets a decent crowd for Notre Damn games.Scooners of Genny for less than $1. College students have been flocking here for decades. You can order a "Jumbo" Chop sirloin burger with fries, salad, 2 pieces of pizza, and tip for less than $10-$12. Just because the place is inexpensive and a ton of college kids frequent it. It maintains the family restaurant atmosphere. This is a perfect place to take a family on a budget. A roast beef dinner with 2 side is less than $6. Give it a shot if you are new to the north side & campus. read more

OH BOY!!!!! My favorite stop when I go back to Youngstown! My dad took me there when I was a kid. I took my kid there when he was little and now my kid is big and he still goes there. My favorite???
