We had dinner this evening at Cassese's Italian restaurant. I'm never in Youngstown but I was there for Grandsons baseball game. I ordered the spaghetti. & meatballs cause I thought since we r at an Italian Restaurant it would really be great! But I didn't like it at all!! My Prego or classico that I used was better. They even charged for extra sauce. I did ask for a little more. My husband liked his Gigi dinner though! The male server we had was nice. Will not be back !! read more

Our group went here for dinner. They were able to accommodate our group without a reservation and the staff was very friendly. We had a few appetizers which were all good- I liked the fried cheese of all of them the fried Italian greens were good as well. For my entree, I ordered the chicken ravioli with the Cajun seasoning. It had a little kick but it was good nonetheless and I cleared my plate. I also had a glass of their pear Riesling and that was so good I should have got a bottle to go. I'm genuinely shocked at what I received for $55. I ordered three of the same meals, but what showed up was an absolute embarrassment. The portion sizes were pathetic (what meat?), the quality was nowhere near restaurant-grade, and the whole order looked like something thrown together with zero care or effort. For the amount of money I spent, I expected real meals -- not these tiny, low-quality scraps. Nothing about this order justified the cost. I've bought better food from gas stations. Honestly, the presentation alone made me lose my appetite. I don't know how this business thinks this is acceptable. Whether it's poor management, lazy prep, or total disregard for customers, it shows. If this is what $55 buys, I'd hate to see what they send someone who spends less. Save your money. Save your time. Nice Italian restaurant in downtown Youngstown right next to YSU. A good sized place with a full bar, dining area and a large indoor area with bocce courts. We were seated right away and that was the first sign of the quality of their service. Our server was attentive and friendly the entire meal. The table shared the greens appetizer and we got the hot pepper add-on. The greens were flavorful (lots of garlic) and the pepper was nicely browned and was hot. Really good app. My main course was linguine with clam sauce. Plenty of clams and a good sauce. Most importantly to me, al dente pasta. Great dish. We took a look at the bocce courts. It was a Wednesday night and they were packed. Great to see folks using the courts and having fun. Really good experience and I'll visit again next time in Youngstown. read more

Each entree after that, from the chicken parm to the pizza that our table of 12 ordered, was perfection. Our waitress, Shelby, did an amazing job serving our large party. Love the food here and this past visit was no exception! Our sever was Jenna and as always, she was fantastic! She is the friendliest and most attentive server I've ever had here or even many other restaurants. She always makes sure we have everything we need before we even have to ask. I ordered the Italian fried greens as my appetizer and they were great. Bursting with flavor and seasoned to perfection with garlic and a few red pepper flakes and of course a sprinkle (or 15) of Parmesan cheese. MVR has some of the best wedding soup in the valley and I'm so glad they started making it again recently. Both my guest and I ordered the spicy bow ties for our entrees , but I substituted tortellini for the bow ties in mine. We both agreed that the dish tasted great and we both left full, with enough to take home for lunch the next day. I wish it were a little busier for their sake because they have a great thing going as they have for years! To be honest, I'm giving this place the benefit of the doubt. Came here from out of town, here for a comedy show at the arena. Got there 2 1/2 hours before the s. Packed. Took 60 minutes to get seats-at the bar. Took another 45 minutes for ordering and service and had to shovel our food down. I'm sure this place would be awesome on a different night. This restaurant used to be great. Food has gone downhill. Ordered the blackened salmon. Presentation, so so. Veggies were cold and over cooked along with the salmon. The online price was $13.99 while the paper menu said $17.99. With that being said, stick to the pizza, have a beer and play a round of bocce. Youngstown is really starting to turn the corner cleaning up their tired city. Lots of new life coming to the area. My rating hasn't changed since my initial review in 2011. We visited about a week ago for dinner on a week night. Wasn't too busy and we were immediately seated. Our waitress was friendly and attentive throughout our visit. We started off with an appetizer of their homemade Italian greens which are some of the best in our area . Simply delicious. Now, I usually go with the Tressel Tortellini but I decided go with the Veal Parmesan this time. Slightly disappointed in that it wasn't an actual veal cutlet as the menu describes but rather more of a veal patty, With that said, it was decent portion and their delicious sauce with a side of penne made up for this minor disappointment. I just had dinner at MVR between a sound check and concert performance at YSU. The sauce and meatballs were outstanding. It was a reunion of sorts and all my old colleagues stopped by the table not to reminisce, but to grab some bread and sop up the remaining sauce till my plate was dry. I had eaten here once years ago with friends and forgot about it until it came as a suggestion for my husband. And as he looked pictures, the only question he had was "how have I never eaten here?" It was crowded when we arrived, but the wait time moved along quickly. That being said, after being seated and ordering, service was efficient but we in no way felt rushed. Out server Brooke was very friendly and man does that woman hustle! We started with calamari appetizer and a smoky hollow pizza that hubs intended to take home for lunch the next day. I say intended. We had to pull ourselves off that delicious pie. He had the veal parmesan and I had the eggplant. For around $10 an entree, I expected modest portions. I was wrong. Both were served with a garden salad or for a small upcharge homemade wedding soup. This was my only mistake. Should have gotten the soup. Fortunately my husband did, and oh my, it was spot on perfect! I'm not a pasta fan so I ordered the Italian greens and peppers in oil to have with my eggplant. The greens were tender but still had good body and not at all bitter and the peppers were served warm with the perfect amount of mellow heat to compliment the greens. In making conversation with the man helping to clear tables and fill glasses we came to find that his name is Joe and this is his family's restaurant. wanted some Italian Greens while I was in town so did a little google search and forgot all about this place. Haven't been here since early 2000's. OMG the greens were so good and exactly what I wanted. Now let's talk about the bowtie pasta w blackened chicken. The description was: Bowtie pasta tossed in our spicy alfredo sauce with sautéed hot peppers and onions topped with a blackened chicken breast. Ummm it was like a velveeta shells and cheese sauce packet. Nothing alfredo about this sauce and I didn't taste not one onion. I loveeee sautéed onions on everything. Super runny and yellow cheese like, not parm alfredo sauce. The chicken was kinda of dry. Mom had the fried fish sandwich which was tasty she said. Waitress was super nice. I asked her her name and of course, I do not remember 4 days later but she put my peppers on the side for me because I was afraid it would be too spicy. Overall great hangout. Three stars for the food, one star for the nostalgia and memories. Located in the Smoky Hollow area of Youngstown, MVR has a long and storied past. You can read about it as you walk in. It's not easy to find, but it's not really that hard if you know where the rear entrance to YSU's Wick Avenue parking deck. It's on that same street. The food is good. It's more home cooking than haute cuisine. I've been here many times and have sampled most of the pasta. Pick any and you'll be happy. It's not expensive, especially for lunch. A nice tradition is to hit this place up before going to the YSU game. read more
