Jumbo chopped steak sandwich with hand cut fries
    Bill J.

This is an iconic Youngstown bar and eatery that first opened in 1932. Lots of local history and nostalgia here. We joined another couple for lunch today. The food was the same high quality as I remember from years ago. My wife and I both opted for the famous Jumbo chopped steak sandwich with fries, and the other couple had a meatball sandwich with fries and a pepper and egg sandwich. Each of us enjoyed our selections. Good portion size, and the food had a home cooked taste. I had an iced tea to drink today, but on my next visit, I'm going to get a traditional schooner of cold Genesee Cream Ale beer in a frosted glass!

Craig Hockenberry I felt like I stepped back in time at the Golden Dawn in Youngstown. I got the pizza and had a Scooner! Prices were great, the service was amazing, the atmosphere was perfect! It even had a secret door behind the bar! Craig Hockenberry

This place is beautiful inside - excellent ambiance. Our server was Annie and she was knowledgeable and had a fun personality, she made our experience great. Food was delicious and the portions were generous. The fries taste just like Canfield Fair fries - yum! Glad this place is still around and has reopened.

    $1.75 ice-cold Genesee

It is such a pleasure seeing this place back in action and better than ever. This is a Youngstown institution, paying homage to the city and serving the coldest beer in town. The service is exceptional with Johnny Naples behind the bar sporting a tie and never letting a cup go dry.

The fifth star has been earned based upon the ice cold schooner of Genesee beer that they are so well known for. When I say ice cold, I mean the tiniest of ice chips floating on top of this cold beverage. Only a $1.75 to boot. I also enjoyed their signature sandwich called the Jumbo which is sirloin chop steak with your choice of cheese and condiments with a side of fries. Damn tasty! Looking forward to my next visit.

This was such a great place. I liked the steak burger sandwich and fresh cut fries. Pizza was good. Frosted schooners of Genesee!

This place is awesome!! Cheap food, sketchy characters...wood paneling...I recommend the grilled cheese as a quick fix for a hangover.

I had the jumbo garlic scampi which was good and full of garlic. And also the small entrée Tavola salad it was only three bucks, but surely not worth that. It was good and the full size salad was probably worth a go. The espresso butter cake was very tasty but not $16 tasty. It was very relaxing at the corner of the bar, but still quite loud.

I had to leave by 630am so I was in a rush. Now let's address the coffee. It was undrinkable, disgusting. The coffee was lukewarm at best and it tasted like dirt. No flavor other than an overwhelming taste of soil. I'm not sure if the beans are old or the machine needs cleaning but I don't think I've tasted such bad coffee before (maybe at a Motel 6 -years ago). Serving in a styrofoam cup was also very unpleasant. Now let's talk about the cost. This was nearly $11 ($1 tip). I wish I could have gone back and gotten my money back because this latte went straight to the garbage can. So disappointing especially since it's a fancier restaurant in a nice hotel. I've never given a 1 star in all my years of writing reviews. Most times I give the place the benefit of the doubt but this was too awful to not be straightforward.

I never like to give a bad rating to a restaurant but in this case, this was one of the worst meals…read moreI've had. The problem is, the place was packed and is clearly a very popular restaurant here. To start, the service was great! Everyone was super friendly and fairly attentive. Moving on to food. We shared two appetizers, peppers in oil and fried Zucchini flowers. The peppers were ok but had just a low quality olive oil that made them seem greasy. I've had fried zucchini flowers many times growing up in an Italian household but these were the worst I've ever had. They were overstuffed, over battered, and again, greasy! Not sure why they offer this dish when you can't taste the flowers at all as they are overpowered by everything else. Next, I had Chicken Marsala. I've had chicken Marsala all over the world, have cooked it many times, and I absolutely love the dish. This version was unlike any other version I've ever had with the addition of a ton of peppers. The chicken was cooked properly but the sauce was gloppy, didn't taste like Marsala, and seemed like it was cooked by someone who doesn't understand that the best Italian dishes should be simple and not "overhanded". The chicken parmigiana was the best meal out of everything they made but unfortunately the spaghetti it came with had waaaaay too much sauce and the parmigiana cheese (which we had to ask for) seemed like the low quality stuff you can buy in a jar at the supermarket. I guess the overall impression was poor quality Italian food made with average quality ingredients. If you like Olive Garden, then you'll probably be happy here as it felt like this restaurant from the food to the decor is stuck in the early 80s. One other note - the prices were very reasonable but as many Italian places in the US are, they don't understand that the main principle of Italian food is high quality ingredients combined with simplicity.

I absolutely wish that, I could give this zero stars. My Husband and I ordered takeout, not once but…read moretwice! Both times were absolutely horrendous. Ordered there "famous" Station Square Charred Ribeye and Prime Rib Au Jus and neither of them had any flavor at all. My husband said it tasted like steak from Ponderosa back in the day and he was absolutely right. We also ordered the lamb lollipops that were dry, had absolutely no flavor. The little bit of juice from the lamb had soaked into the instant mashed potatoes, that are underneath?? it's an appetizer?!? They tasted like paste!!! The most flavorful thing we got was the Ajou sauce which I ordered an extra side of it/paid for the up charge and they were extremely rude about it. It was extremely overpriced and nothing was good! We won't be returning. As a young child, I used to eat there a lot with my family, but I see things have changed tremendously.
