    Octopus

I'm not certain where these other reviewers ate, but I definitely had a different experience. I had the octopus appetizer that was almost an entree itself. My wife had the carbonara and it was delicious. A little side note about carbonara: many places and people make this incorrectly. My favorite celebrity chef Gordon Ramsay, doesn't make it correctly. This place makes it the authentic Italian way with NO CREAM! And they use guanciale instead of bacon or pancetta. Yes, I am a bit of a food snob. I had the skirt steak for my entree and it was beautifully cooked and well seasoned with fingerling potatoes and broccolini. The green sauce was done well with the right amount of seasoning. We also had the artichokes. They were not overly salty as one reviewer posted Our server was very well informed and being from Eastern Europe, I was also impressed with his pronunciation of the Italian names of the dishes. It is a lovely and charming restaurant that is a great spot in downtown Youngstown.

    Lemon sorbet dessert. Refreshing.

Best dinner before the show in a lovely room with a nice bar. This family restaurant hand makes everything. And, yum. Everything tasted wonderfully. We started with wine and Caprese salad, Devils on Horseback dates, and Calamari. All were delicious. The Calamari was lightly fried and included two large shrimps. For entrees I had a fabulous grilled octopus starter called Polpo and some of the Calamari. Others had the Skirt steak that was large with a nice flavor, but was a lot of meat with a side of greens. The lamp chops were not on the menu, but my friend, who's a regular here, asked and received. She really liked the six chops. The evening's special was trout, and it was outstanding, said my husband who orders fish when we dine out. Next time we will try the handmade pasta. Having dessert was worth the extra time. We had lemon sorbet in a hollowed out lemon. The presentation in a martini glass was very creative with the cut lemon end used as the cap. Refreshing!

Apparently I am now a Michigander who loves huge swaths of Ohio and Ohio foods. That said, I wasn't…read moreborn in Michigan. My roots are shallow. I don't care about sports, and I never studied the great Toledo war. As far as I can tell, we got the UP so even if Ohio won, I figure we still came out ahead? Like I said, I never took a midwest social studies course. In all seriousness, I don't know what is more responsible for bringing me back to Westside Bowl over and over again. It's a pretty close tie between the Brier Hill Pizza and the pinball. Pinball and pizza are two of my favorite things. Plus I love peppers and frankly I'm a big old fan of the Basilicata region in Italy, which incidentally is reported to be the cultural underpinning of Brier Hill Pizza. But that's neither here nor there. I also am a big fan of interesting regional beers. Westside Bowl has those covered, but I'm usually stopping in on a roadtrip and now that I'm old, one beer makes me really really sleepy. So sadly, I usually just look with wistful eyes at the beer list. Fortunately I can console myself with pinball. There's a good selection of machines, and many of them play quite well. The staff has always been lovely. I appreciate the queer friendly signage visible from the very large parking lot. The stage for shows looks freaking awesome. And there is real honest to goodness bowling. Not this gussied up let's-put-big-ass-tv-screens-over-the-lanes-for-the-add-set bowling. I don't know who put all of these things together into one old building, but whoever they are, they should be awarded a Nobel prize. It's flipping genius. The locals of Youngstown are fortunate to have a place like this. I hope the appreciate it and understand just how lucky they are. If only the kitchen staff could work on making a dynamite sauerkraut ball, I woudln't be tempted to skip Youngstown for an occasional dalliance to Akron. And for that matter, perhaps they might consider dialing in a cold cheese pizza, to keep me from visits to the Ohio valley.

Westside Bowl on Mahoning ave in Youngstown is a great spot for the pizza, the appetizers, the…read moredraft beers and the interior of the joint itself. It's a full unreserved recommend highly and take Mom and Pop for lunch too! Seriously, Westside Bowl DOES have great pizza. They got a LOT of off street safe free parking. The people who work there are friendly AND fun to look at. (not being mean, I just like green hair and a smile ) There are regularly scheduled bands. Some of which do cost $20+ to see, but it's a good concert space downstairs with a good vibe. It's not like you're stuffed into "JJ's Cave" or something. Remember Nyanhinghi? Nitabinghi? That bar that had music up on Steel street? Same good vibe. And that's really the point I'm trying to make. The Westside Bowl is an exemplar (ha!) of what could happen when good, ON SITE management means to a venue. Hit this place up for some cool and mellow times, and enjoy your afternoon. Your night. Your health. This place will make you younger, I #### you not
