This one has several booths with Asian designed wood along the backs, and several large round tables for bigger parties, some with lazy Susans for sharing dishes. The focal point is the little fountain with a fish tank--very cool! Our server was great, and the food came out fast. We ordered a couple of cocktails (a pina colada and a Golden Gate), the Szechuan Beef, the Flaming Seafood, and Double Cooked Roast Pork. Our group dropped in for a Chinese feast, and we ordered one of the set dinner menus. The hot and sour soup was neither spicy nor sour. The appetizer tower was nearly all fried foods, which made for a filling way to start a big meal, and the main courses were mostly bland. On the other hand, the prices are reasonable, and we took a sizable amount of food home though we declined to take the leftovers of the least popular main dish. The service was friendly and the décor is on point, but this experience did not measure up to the classic American Chinese meals we've had in the past. I often come here for the lunch special, primarily because it's cheap and full . Ordering the orange chicken for the lunch special doesn't leave you disappointed, since you get hot and sour soup or egg drop soup for lunch. Otherwise, the steamed rice is quite dry, so you should add a little more water before cooking. Overall, it's okay. The service is fast most of the time. The food is fantastic and the service is outstanding . They always made sure our drinks were filled, they were very friendly and nice, and the prices are pretty reasonable. The interior is nice too as well as well air conditioned so no worries about high heat there. The flavoring of all the food was delicious and there's so much to choose from. I will for sure be back in the future and this is one of the best Chinese food places I near Mesa. Give the chicken with plum sauce a try, as well as sizzling rice soup, and the Golden shrimp dish. I used to go to this years ago and thought it was OK but I took my there yesterday for lunch and it was horrible. The Egg Drop soup was like watery vegetable soup and smelled of rancid oil. it had carrots, peas, onions, and celery in it. I've never had egg drop soup with all that in there; you couldn't even find the egg part. We asked for some crispy wontons to put in the soup and they were old and hard and almost burnt, so we didn't use them. Then came our entrées; my daughter ordered orange chicken. The chicken looked OK, but you couldn't even taste the orange sauce. I ordered almond chicken and again it came with carrots, peas, onions, celery, bamboo shoots, and chestnuts you couldn't find the chicken. And the almonds that were spread on top were also almost burnt. I will never go back. read more

Hidden gem! The sesame chicken was incredible--crispy, tender, and perfectly coated in sauce. The portions were huge, the food came out hot and fresh, and everything tasted homemade. You cannot beat their lunch special and we love the authentic decor. The service and food here are always top notch. We visited yesterday for the Lunar New Year - Happy Year of the Fire Horse! I was afraid it would be super busy, given the holiday, but it wasn't too bad. We were able to get a table right away. We ordered the Family Dinner for 2, which is only $23 per person and a TON of food. You get soup, appetizer platter and 3 entrees. The entree servings are tailored to size for how many people are enjoying but it's still huge portions. We came here for our book club to try a new spot. The portions are good for sharing. The food itself is okay, I personally felt it was lacking flavor. I used their chili oil in hopes of adding more flavor but was disappointed with the flavor of that as well. I do feel like our server was trying to rush us out. When I showed up about 15-20 minutes later, the lady was welcoming and sweet. And the food was ready to go! We ordered the Imperial Combo which includes: 1. eggroll, crab Angel, and fried shrimp - all were okay, a little soggy and somewhat flavorful but I might have high standards bc I make all of these myself. I'd probably add more salt or dip in soy sauce. 2. A big cup of egg drop soup - I'm a huge fan if this soup anytime i go to a Chinese place. T this version had peas in it. And it was good. My family and I tried this Chinese Restaurant to celebrate Chinese New Year. Since moving to Mesa from California we have not found a Chinese Restaurant to our liking. Finally, Golden Gate Chinese Restaurant exceeded our expectations. The servers were very nice and helpful. The menu has all the traditional Chinese food choices you would expect. The appetizer platter with the flame, Happy Platter, was outstanding with generous portions. All of our entrees were delicious. The pricing is quite reasonable. My family has been coming here for many many years. We moved 23 years ago out of the area. We recently came to Arizona and China Gate was the first place we wanted to eat at. Actually we came here twice once for dinner then again the next day for Lunch. We ordered our favorites Fried Dumplings, House Special Chicken, & Mongolian Beef. We were alittle surprised they now charge for the Jasmine tea and they do not offer fried wonton chips when you are seated. The portions are family style and pretty large, as we always had extras. Served with either fried rice, white rice or you can request brown rice if your prefer. You are also offered a free dessert when they bring your receipt to pay, it was a fried wonton filled with a little banana piece and dusted with powdered sugar and a fortune cookie. The vibe in the restaurant is pretty authentic. And the food is great. The house special chicken was chicken breast dipped in a thin coating, deep fried, then sliced and covered with a small serving of vegetables and a delicious light brown sauce. The Mongolian Beef, was thinly sliced beef, that is well marinated and the garlic sauce was very tasty with a sprinkle of sesame seeds, sautéed green onions, carrots and white onions. Had lunch here last week with family. It doesn't look like anything special from the outside but inside it's nicely decorated and modern looking with an aquarium. We had 5 people and easily got a table even though it was a busy lunch hour. Everyone ordered orange flavor chicken. I had the beef version. Mine was not crispy and the orange sauce was too sweet or maybe just too much sauce was used. I prefer white rice but we got brown rice. Other than that it was overall very good everyone else seemed pleased with their lunches. Service was top notch and our server had our glasses filled, gave us a bit of time to look at the menu to order and we didn't have to wait at all for our lunch to arrive after ordering. I'm sure it was change of ownership took friends there yesterday bragging on how good it was and was horrified. Soup was served ice cold. Had to send it back to put it in the microwave. We first went to Golden Gate 20+ years ago and it's great to see that they are still in existence. We took our 3 grandson's (10 & 9 years old) to their first authentic Chinese restaurant experience. They have been to 100's of restaurants around the country with all the travel we do as a family. Sadly, I have to say that Golden Gate did not deliver. Service 4+ stars; ambience 4 stars but food was very disappointing. The sizzling rice soup did not sizzle by the time it reached our table. Egg rolls seemed over fried and greasy. Golden Gate Special Fish Filets was basically all breading and virtually no fish - very, very disappointing. The sweet and sour chicken was just as heavily breaded and not appealing. House fried rice was very, very dry and virtually no ingredients. Sorry to be a bit harsh, but I just tell it like it is. Sadly, we will not be going back and I have a hard time recommending Golden Gate. Best of luck in the future. We had a number of shared dishes which were very nice.. however I did forget to take photos because we were hungry and tucked right in.. moving furniture gets you pretty ravenous when you have been on the go all day! We shared some veggie spring rolls which were cooked perfectly and not at all greasy (like many), the crab angels, an egg drop soup, moo shu chicken, sweet & sour chicken, pad thai noodles and a chicken fried rice. It saddens me to write this review as I've been going to Golden Gate since I was about twelve years old and loved it. However, things do not last forever, and this is one of them. Stepping inside for the first time in a few years and the restaurant looks the same down to the white paper coverings on the tables. I sat down and checked out the menu and decided on the broccoli with chicken. The lunch order still comes with a choice of soup and wontons and a veggie egg roll. I got the egg drop soup that came out pipping hot, and it was still delicious. I wish I could say that the rest of my meal was delicious. However, this was not the case. The chicken with broccoli came out in a dark brown soupy sauce that I was not expecting. From what I remember for years, the chicken and broccoli came in a white and clear sauce. The sauce was very heavy, too sweet, and did not have any flavor. Eating each bite made me so sad because I remember when this used to taste good, and now it does not. The servers that came by did not seem to really care that I did not like the food. Again, things have to change, but this has not changed for the better. Bf called in our order and it was ready within 10 mins! The woman taking our order misheard bf and thought he ordered 2 egg drop soups so we got 2! The total was $19 for both which feels steep for some basic soup. Pretty standard egg drop soup, although this last time we ordered it, it had... celery! Celery does NOT go in egg drop soup.. bf picked his way around and there was a LOT of celery in lieu of the peas. Not a good swap. read more
