    Buffet plate
    Kristi O.

I've always gone here and got their incredible eggrolls, which I still say are the best in town. But for the first time, my friends and I ate there for dinner, they only had one person serving The entire restaurant so service was slow. It was difficult to get a refill and we decided to try their buffet plate. I should've asked what was on it because it was a lot of fried not so great tasting things, I'm sure maybe some of the other food is actually good and we should've tried some thing off the menu but we did the buffet plate and it was a mistake. I would not recommend it, nor would I eat it again. It's a small restaurant and it was definitely busy. There were people who had to wait to sit and eat and they also had a lot of takeout orders so the food is probably good but I will have to go back and try some thing off the menu.

Garlic chicken, Sweet And Sour Pork
    Steven P.

Had GG many years ago, and we tried it recently as it's been featured quite a bit on local social media pages. And it's been quite heavily favored. We ordered a garlic chicken and sweet sour pork dinner special and a combo meal of sweet and sour chicken and pepper steak. Various accompaniments included a huge egg roll, fried rice, an onion ring, and a fried wonton skin. The order took 45 minutes which they disclosed upfront - not an issue, but note it does take time during peak times. Pepper steak was not peppery at all - it was a generous portion and the onions were really well cooked. Fried rice was blah (technical term)... sweet and sour chicken was like a sliced up chicken katsu - it was good and glad it was not the usual massively breaded chicken chunk. The egg roll is nice - large and very traditional. The best part was the real hot mustard!! Talk about it a wake up call - I give that 5-stars on its own. The garlic chicken was so-so; lacked flavor - but tender. Fried pork was typical over breaded pork chunk - veggies such as broccoli were good and had nice color. I can see where GG is popular - it's decent traditional Chinese, but it's not spectacular. However perhaps we need to try to some other dishes. Will report back if we do!!

I understand that it's fried, so there will be some grease. But this was just pouring out!

I don't understand the appeal. The food is greasy, as in, VERY greasy and oily. The flavor is dull. I really do not appreciate the pressure to tip that is stated on the tacky boxes mounted to the wall. I will always happily tip for good service, but this is off-putting. It's also tiny and the decor could use some major updating. For those of you checking this place out based on a recommendation, please remember that just because it's been here forever, doesn't automatically mean it's good!

General Tsos Chicken and fried rice

I ordered the General Tso's Chicken and fried Rice. The chicken tasted ok and my food came out in a timely manner. I had an egg roll. It was huge! It tasted ok. The fried rice was bad. The service was not good. There were 3 of us. My sister and I received our food quickly, but the waitress gave the table next to us (that came in after us) my Mom's food. She finally got her order after we were finished. Mom said that it didn't taste fully cooked. There was only one waitress and she was not very attentive. It is a small location. It's advertised as a buffet. It is not. They have one "special " that is all you can eat. We were informed that it was not all you can eat tonight. I do not recommend this place at all.

    Peking Beef with fried rice

Check out the insane portion size. The egg roll is nearly as big as my fork and the crab ragoon was even bigger. First time ever trying Golden Gate and I will definitely be returning. The staff was so kind and you could tell anyone who came in to pick up food were regulars. The owner knew everyone's name and they all spoke to each other like friends. Back to the food, this turned into 3 meals. I've never had Peking Beef before but the flavor was outstanding. I went in wanting something spicy that had meat and vegetables. This absolutely hit the spot. The crab ragoon even had crab pieces in it, I was surprised. That was the biggest egg roll and crab ragoon I have ever seen! I would have like to have a little more sauce for the meal, but that would probably be my only complaint! I cannot wait to go back and try other dishes!

    Lunch special??

Horrible food. Horrible service. They are totally under staffed and served us old fried rice. The chicken was slimy but the broccoli and zucchini were pretty good. I won't be back. They raised the prices. Fried rice and pork is now $18. Wow. And they don't even have the onion rings

This place sucks. The food is bland, nasty and it is BEYOND overpriced. Will never eat here again.

You can get all the common dishes here but you can also get some unusual dishes that are very authentic. My grandson once ordered jelly fish. You can't get that at very many local restaurants. Another thing I like is that they have a couple of large round tables with lazy Susans. Our extended family sat at one of those tables once. It was fun putting the things we wanted to share on the lazy Susan and being able to spin it around and try what we wanted. It made for fun conversation talking about the different dishes. That was when our grandson ordered jellyfish. The restaurant is fairly small but the large tables make the restaurant good for groups. I think this would be an excellent place for a Yelp event. They have a lunch menu but you have to ask for it. It includes some of the popular Asian dishes for $9:95. They have smaller portions that come with a choice of soup or egg roll. Danny and I asked to see the lunch menu, but decided to order off the main menu. We split Crispy Tofu with garlic sauce and egg rolls. I liked the presentation of the egg rolls. They were cut diagonally and arranged nicely on the plate. The tofu dish was quite tasty. Next time, I plan to get Mei Fun. I have had it here before and loved the variety of flavors. The service wasn't terrible but it wasn't wonderful. We got our food in a timely manner, but we felt rushed to order and she didn't check to see if we needed anything or refill our water glasses. Service here has been excellent in the past. I am glad we came back to Chengdu and were reminded of how much we like it. We will be back soon.

Yet and still, there are few restaurants that consistently deliver on 3 of the most important consumer qualities: ambiance, food, and service. As a local Asian Fusion restaurant that embraces both cuisine and ambiance, Roka sets itself apart from most Asian restaurants with their cutting-edge menu items, inviting happy hour deals and consistent service. I didn't eat out often growing up but I vividly remember passing Roka & fantasizing what it's like inside given it's one of a kind design. I was first impressed by their fried rice when ordering out in 2015 but this review is regarding my visit on October 25th, 2025. A dear friend of mine invited me out on a Saturday and I suggested Roka, one of the most reliable restaurants in town. We arrived around 4pm and, to my surprise, there was plenty of seating available. We were sat by the host and our server came shortly after. I can't recall her name but she did have great suggestions and delivered quality service. I ordered the Kung Pao Chicken (reg) while my friend ordered the Sweet & Sour (sm.). The meal arrived in almost record time! I was delighted to look at our colorful, carefully assembled, plates. My meal had a considerable serving size and an even better taste. The chicken was soft, tender and juicy. With compliments from the peppers & rice, I couldn't have been more satisfied. My friend (who is picky) wasn't a fan of the mix of peppers & pineapple but I think she liked it more than she cared to admit. Overall, I had the most pleasant afternoon at Roka thanks to the everpleasing service and most tranquil of settings. It's important to show appreciation to the institutions that you enjoy, which is why I will continue to support/enjoy! Roka provides a welcoming venue, satisfactory menu items and superb service upon every visit which sets itself apart from most other Asian restaurants and above chains like P.F. Changs or Hibachis. If you're in the mood for an affordable upscale dinner with great vibes, this is the place to visit.

I was excited to see the variety of GF options available. Have been there 4 times in the last 6 weeks. The only critique I have is the sauce on the sweet and sour chicken is almost too sweet. One of the times there was so much sauce it overtook the rest of the flavors. Besides that, they are a solid option for GF food. No reactions on any of the visits which was a win in my book.
