This is a cute little neighborhood coffee shop. I stopped by based on a recommendation from a co-worker. It's near enough to the office. I went in about an hour before they closed after a busy morning going from appointment to appointment. Coffee connoisseur I am not, but golden milk and espresso lover I am! I don't come across many coffee shops offering anything golden, so this was nice treat. Next time I'd probably add a natural syrup, or even honey. I like the taste of coffee, but a little bit of sweetener would have gone a long way here for me, so next time! This is also a bit of a plant shop, and who I assume to be the owner told me that they normally have more plants but have sold a lot. Good to know! I've really been contemplating no longer being a dead beat plant mom. read more

What a great neighborhood coffee shop. If you are walking the lake and don't mind a little detour it's worth swinging by. Alex is the best. Immaculate vibes. Cute plants and a rock solid chai. If you miss firebrand in Oakland stop in, you will probably see some familiar faces. read more

At first glance, Golden Outside looks more a small plants store than a coffee shop. No seating inside. Just one table outside. Decor is basically potted green plants everywhere. Street parking limited. Offerings: coffees, matcha, pastries, juices, teas, pastries.... Sips: batch brew (4) dark roast Ethiopian covfefe -black sans cream, sugar. Tasted medium dark roast. Strong, sightly bold aroma. -barista very helpful explaining difference of Central American blend & Ethiopian one . 4.5 stars nice asset for community. The coffee here was great! The people were so sweet and kind, they definitely are passionate about their coffee and it shows. They have a great selection of beans and profile. I really appreciated the solid pour over, very strong and brewed very nicely. They really dialed it in. It was no frills or gimmicky, just great coffee. Went back for seconds to bring home to my sister. Almost sad to post how great this spot is and it'll become overcrowded. Such a gem read more

The neighborhood has all patiently been waiting for this moment, a locally owned coffee shop! It's so nice to see the active storefront flourish, literally! You're surrounded by lots of plants upon arrival and greeted by the owner, who was super friendly and welcoming. I've been meaning to try the matcha here but opted for the golden latte instead during my first visit. It was good, not too sweet! Partner tried the cafe latte which he loved. Super cute and nice cafe in the neighborhood. While waiting, a question came up that what's the difference between an Americano and drip coffee? I know the former adds water to a expresso shot and later just from filter paper. So maybe just Americano has the oil content? Would the taste about the same (strangely I don't remember seeing the fat on my americano..)? I got the dripped coffee this time and it's good. 1 star out on the pretzel based cinnamon roll. I don't think they make the pastries here (I didn't ask though). Not very sure why the baker thinks the two combination can ever be good. I didn't know it's pretzel based and yes, you are right that it's a super hard thing. A table and 2 chairs outside. Was about 930am and left after 10 mins because of the direct sun. read more

Golden is truly a hidden gem. It is hands down the best matcha in Oakland and if you're lucky enough to live in the neighborhood, a sweet lil walk for some matcha is always something to look forward to. When I think about golden outside I can't help but say ," yay!" out loud. :) We're are so grateful to have this coffee shop in our neighborhood. Tasty drinks with a wide variety of options. This is a micro coffee shop with lovely people running it and excellent drinks. Proof that it is life-giving can be found in the gorgeous plants with which it is adorned. It is the only place I can think of to obtain a reasonably priced organic green juice (over ice, but not too much ice) and an expertly crafted cortado. I highly recommend it. It would be great to see it become a neighborhood fixture with a steady stream of business, but not too many people at a time, because it is nice to have time for interactions with the folks working there. read more

While this visit was in between the lunch and dinner rush, unfortunately I think they are understaffed because at the time we sat down there was only 1 person who was busing tables and taking orders. As a result, it took a while for them to be able to stop by our table and provide water, take our order, etc. There was quite a long wait between sitting down to ordering to actually receiving our food. By the time we had actually received our food, almost an hour had passed. While we were waiting, a few other servers eventually joined, but service was still pretty bare for us and we never received refills on water or plates to eat off of when we received our food. I understand that staffing and a backup in the kitchen are out of the staff's control, but it would've definitely helped for us to know in advance how long to expect to wait to align our expectations and arrange our plans for the day. Would advise giving customers a quick heads up/warning because that on its own would've made a big difference. As for the actual food, we ordered the mac trio with elote mac, chicken pot pie mac, and kogi short rib mac (for an extra fee). The elote mac was the best and most flavorful, the short rib mac was okay but not amazing or worth the extra money, and the chicken pot pie mac was very bland/flavorless and didn't have much chicken in it. The food didn't feel like it warranted the wait time and because of that I would not return.

Unfortunately, the sauce leaned far too citrusy for my taste and overpowered the flavors I wanted to come through, such as fish sauce, vinegar, and sugar. I also think a little more fried onion and garlic would have made the dish more flavorful and satisfying. Overall, we had a decent meal with both highlights and misses. They also offer dishes like bánh khọt and bò lúc lắc, which may be worth trying on a future visit.
