This used to be our favorite Chinese restaurant. The food is not the same. Atmosphere is horrible - they allow their children to play games loudly on ipads near our table. So tacky. We told them about the issue and she wanted to have the children turn the volume to half. We said no - they need to turn it off. She balked and after arguing with the children (in the diningroom) took them to another room. They returned later and had the volume on again. Really?! Return again after a couple of weeks -same scenario. We asked to talk to the owner before we left and they said - no owner here. They wanted to know the issue and when we said it was the children's game noise, they laughed at us and blew us off. I have never been so humiliated by staff at a restaurant. I can not imagine children controling their parents like so. The food was ok - 5/10 for hot and sour. Kung Pao - 5/10 as too sweet, not enough spice. The Crispy beef was too sweet. May have better luck at mall with the Chinese take out. read more

If you like okay Chinese food this place is only ok. I ordered take out and finished my food only because I was hungry. I would deliver DD orders from this place and the food smelled good but actually trying it was quite disappointing. They also need to update their online menu because i spent $10 more than I wanted to when they told me the actual cost. The food is subpar, not worth the amount they charge today. Their combination house fried rice is my least favorite of all i got, which was that, wonton soup, and the happy family. They charge way too much for close to mediocre food! I would never eat here again unless they lowered their prices. The happy family was most disappointing because, they dont use real crab meat. They use imitation crab meat and the scallops are cut very small chunks. Overall, the food may smell good, but dont let this place fool you. Not worth the money in your wallet. read more

Wife and I are on a road trip coming back from Yellowstone. We decided to stop in rapid city for a few nights. All 6 Chinese places in West Yellowstone were closed, so we were looking for a good Chinese restaurant here. Oh boy did we find one. We enjoyed it so much we came back for dinner the next night. Night 1 my wife got orange chicken with fried rice and egg drop soup. The chicken was crispy and egg drop soup was exactly what you want. I had the beef lo mein and it was excellent. Perfect amount of sauce and the beef was incredibly tender. Then next night, she got the walnut shrimp and hot and sour soup. The coconut sauce was so freaking good, might have been my favorite thing we tried. I had Mongolian beef and wonton soup. Again the beef was super tender with great flavor. Service was on point, food arrived quickly. The interior was very clean and well kept. Excellent vibes. Will come back next time we're in town and will recommend to anyone read more

Oh man, I double checked with my sister and brother-in-law to get their feedback and what they would rate it (2/5) before I decided on the 2-star rating. I hope this feedback is taken well and can be used to improve some aspects of the food quality! A redeeming factor is we were given an accurate estimation for ready-for-pick-up time. We ordered takeout and each ordered the "Individual Combination Dinner" option. On the website, it says: "Served with Egg Roll, Chicken Wing, Fried Rice, and your choice of Wonton Soup, Hot & Sour Soup or Egg Drop Soup". It also says $12.75... 1. The website is outdated. We were given a take-out menu when we picked up the order, which had the updated prices and menu options. The Individual Combo Dinner now does not come with a chicken wing, but with a crab rangoon. The individual combo dinner is now $13+. So make sure you have access to the updated takeout menu! 2. The soups: Some of us got the wonton soup, and my sister got the egg drop soup. The feedback is the wonton soup tastes strongly of soy sauce. It's also a dark brown color so you know there was a lot of soy sauce mixed in there. The wontons are alright but not much meat in them at all. My sister was not a big fan of the egg drop soup. She is more on the picky side, but she's had pretty good egg drop soup in other locations (including New York), and did not enjoy finding some vegetables (including mushroom) in her egg drop soup. 3. The egg rolls could have been crunchier/more fried on the outside. They had a soft exterior. But we all agreed the filling was good! 4. Moo Goo Gai Pan - I ordered this dish. Overall, the chicken and vegetables in the dish tasted fine, nothing that some drizzle of soy sauce couldn't fix. The sauce was watery though, and I found globs of what it seemed to be gelatin?? I'm thinking maybe it was cornstarch slurry that didn't get mixed in well with the sauce. 5. My brother-in-law and I were not a big fan of the fried rice. It was bland, and after finding only the tiniest bits of egg, we both thought there could have been more more egg and any vegetables at all (especially the typical peas and carrots maybe?) It felt like just tasting dry bland brown-colored rice. 6. My brother-in-law got the General's Chicken - this one was probably the best one of all of ours, although I tasted a piece and it was tough and chewy... Still flavorful though. 7. My sister ordered the Szechuan Beef. A lot of mushrooms, not too much beef. (We all also incidentally found a random mushroom in all of our rice portions? not sure if that was intentional lol). I will say this also wasn't too bad in terms of flavor, but also not spicy, which it notes on the menu. General tips: You should ask for white rice instead of the fried rice. Order multiple main dishes instead of the individual combo dinners for better value, especially if you don't mind not having soups. read more

Meh! Had much better Chinese food. Was really craving broccoli and tofu with garlic sauce and ordered that but got mixed veggies with no broccoli. It hit the spot still but missed the broccoli. One of the worst experience I have had in a restaurant. I had to give at least 1 Star for review. First off, a 5 year old kid was running around... must be the host or the server's kid. As we pulled up, saw a female (server) and cook outside hanging out and looked like smoking. Food was absolutely drenched in sauce, like a soup. The worst Egg Rolls we have ever had. I had to get up two times to get sweet and sour sauce from other table, while she (she) was sitting in the next booth viewing her iPhone. The female server was more interested in her iPhone than serving. Always had her iPhone in one hand while serving food and drink. Never followed up to see if the food was okay or not. While we were eating, the server was sitting right next to our booth and viewing her iPhone. There should be some dress code for the staff... not to show up work in sweats and long hair fully unrestrained. We used to come to this place regularly when we lived here. Have wonderful memories from the way it was managed when we lived here before and how clean it was with the previous owner. I asked the host (who also happened to be in sweats), who the owner was, but he would not provide us the name of the owner. What a sad experience! read more

In Rapid City for work. I was craving Chinese so I googled best Chinese restaurants in RC.. Golden Phoenix had pretty good ratings so we gave it a try. It was pretty busy and people were lined up . so you would think.. good food! I ordered combo egg foo yung and crispy beef. We waited over 30 mins because they so busy. Got our food came back to the hotel and dug into my egg foodthe yung.. I dont know what they did.. but all veges and meat was outside of the egg.. not blended in..no gravy they poured some sort of brown runny sauce over it..and the worst part..the egg patty was so dry it literally flaked and the texture was like paste. They didn't use real eggs but used powdered egg subsitute.. and they were pre-made and frozen. Then the crispy beef is a sweet brown honey sauce with thin sliced beef fried crispy and then mixed in the sauce with shredded carrots and celery. What I got was sliced beef fried and mixed in some brown sauce again.. the same sauce that the egg foo yung was drenched in but a bit sweeter. It was mushy, lacked any taste and disappointing at its best. All I can do is dump it in the trash since I am not in the mood to go back and argue about how bad their food is..... I'll eat the left overs from yesterday and call it a lost. read more

I used to go here all the time but ever since it changed ownership it has gone downhill. Every person that works here is unbelievably RUDE especially the guy that works the front and the woman who always waits tables at lunch time. Their attitudes are disgusting. Who wants to go somewhere and spend their hard earned money just to be treated like crap? The final straw for me was when I politely asked the waitress for a couple more napkins and she rolled her eyes and just grabbed some off a dirty table where the people had just left. read more

Food is okay. The shrimp fried rice was a great quantity and shrimp were good-sized but both the shrimp and rice were mushy but worth the $8.75. Beware of the fried chicken . I was disappointed because the menu description says 6 wings but instead I got 6 halfs of wings which is actually only 3 wings. I was disappointed because the price was $6.25. Definitely not worth it! In case you're wondering the chicken was also good. Overall the staff was nice (but I hate when foreigners talk in their language infront of me) the food was good and for the most part the prices where fair. I have eaten at the Golden Phoenix for many years and food was excellent while Jerry was there. Since he left the quality of the food has been not very good. I recently ordered the lotus scallops and when I got home I was amazed at the size of these supposedly scallops as they were half the size what they used to be. In fact I don't believe they were scallops because scallops have a unique sweet taste. I believe they were a white fish cut to look like scallops. I used to eat there all the time. The last time I went prior to this the food wasn't very good either. I am so disappointed to see such a wonderful place go sideways and the quality of the food along with that. Ted Wolk read more

A solid choice amongst all of the bar food (burgers, chicken, wraps, salad, etc.) in Rapid City. Golden Phoenix took our to-go order, repeated it back to me (yay!), and even called back to confirm. As requested, the order was ready in an hour. Although super busy, they offered to help me out to the car with the food. They were friendly and welcoming. Came in on a weekday evening and was seated immediately. Large takeout orders were absolutely flying out of the kitchen, so I knew it'd be good. Had the combination with general's chicken. I was pleasantly surprised by Golden Phoenix. They definitely exceeded my expectations. First things first, this is NOT a Chinese takeout restaurant. It is an actual dine-in restaurant, which seemed to be decently decorated from my spot at the entryway. My husband and I both ordered the orange chicken combo meal along with a small fried rice to go, which came out to be about $30. Kinda pricey for Chinese food, but when I saw the serving size I was satisfied for sure. The meal comes with 1 crab Rangoon, 1 egg roll, soup (egg drop OR hot & sour), fried rice, and the orange chicken. Holy moly, it was enough for two meals for me. The orange chicken is not your average orange chicken. It seems like they make their own sauce. It has a different kinda sweetness, with a more natural-tasting hint of orange. Quite refreshing to experience orange chicken in that way, but I was kind of craving the typical orange chicken sauce. So just keep that in mind if that's what you're expecting. It was still suuuper delicious. The egg roll was bomb as well, and the crab Rangoon had actual crab pieces in it (not just cream cheese). The only thing that I didn't like was the hot and sour soup. REALLY good Chinese food in South Dakota. Go figya! I'd been in the Heartland for two weeks and was a little homesick. I couldn't look at another steak or chicken-fried anything. Hungry for a little Asian food fix, I hailed Mary and took a chance on Golden Phoenix. It was really good! Not just "good for this part of the country" good--good enough to stand on its own! I'm relatively snobbish about my Chinese food, and am often disappointed even in San Francisco. (Oakland's Chinatown is so much better. But I digress...) I had a combo platter for $10. Kung pao beef that was just a little spicy with fresh, crunchy snow peas, a scoop of fried rice, egg roll, chicken wing, and some damned fine hot and sour soup. I will admit, I was surprised at how good the food was at Golden Phoenix. My friend and I both ordered the Yu Hsiang (garlic sauce on other menus) style chicken and veggies on the recommendation from our server. It was soooo delicious. Sweet, savory with a little heat. It was perfect with a hot bowl of rice. Plus our server was awesome. Reasonably priced around $11 a dish for a large serving with unlimited rice. I'm not sure where to start. We saw some good reviews and a few that were not so good and we hoped that the good ones were right. Unfortunately, the bad ones were closer to the truth. We had the cashew chicken dinner meal and the broccoli beef dinner meal.It's usually a bad sign when the best part of the meal is the fortune cookies. Crab Rangoon? , was inedible . The won ton soup was bland. They use some sort of strange gravy on the broccoli beef and they seem to use the same stuff on the cashew chicken. Oh and did I mention that it's very expensive for what you get. Ate a bit of it and threw the rest out. $25 flushed. read more

We ordered three items. All were wrong. 1) the rice was missing for the sesame chicken. The sauce was terrible. 2) Kung Po chicken menu description does not include mushrooms but there were more mushrooms than other veggies. 3) we ordered wontons. The guy taking our order kept asking with cheese or meat. Their menu has two items --one labeled wontons and one labeled crab triangles. If we WANTED crab/cheese mixture we would have ordered Triangles and not wontons. At this point I'm thinking the mall food China Pantry is better than this place. read more

Golden Phoenix has been a staple restaurant for my family for over 16 years. It's a local family owned business. Our family favorite is the hot and sour soup. In my opinion it's the best hot and sour soup I've had anywhere, even my children enjoy it. Jerry, one of the owners is friendly and works super hard to keep his business going. I'll continue supporting Golden Phoenix. The last time I was there they had not opened their inside seating, it was to go only. I can't wait to dine in again soon. read more

On vacation from Wisconsin decided to have Chinese for dinner. I looked on internet for Chinese restaurants. Choose Golden Phoenix very happy with my choice.
