I first went here in 2008. And returned so many times as I made my way home from work after many long grueling days. I live an hour and a half away now but recently stopped in after a visit to Sonoma. I was happy I did. Golden Spring Mandarin Cuisine is unspectacular, but not terrible. Hoping for a glimmer in the otherwise barren Asian food landscape of Sonoma, Golden Spring seemed a good lunch bet. Lunch specials range from $10.65 to $11.95, depending on your choice of protein. Each includes a cup of hot and sour soup, which was neither spicy nor astringent, and some sad fried wontons, which were not worth the oily calories. Also not spicy, the "Mongolian" beef should have been called beef with green and white onions. Devoid of any ambiance, the dining room is equipped with Formica topped tables that sport paper placemats with the Chinese zodiac (Year of the Dog, Horse, Dragon, etc.). Right out of a 1960s standard issue Chinese restaurant manual. Review for take out order only. Called in our order and it was ready in 15 minutes. The owners are super nice and I love that the whole family helps out in the restaurant. Food was hot when we got it. Flavor is good and not to salty which I enjoy. We got fried rice, chow mein, sweet and sour pork and beef and broccoli. I did not really like the sweet and sour pork because it was to soft and not crispy but I am sure it was we got it to go. Prices are very reasonable and portions are a good size. We sadly discovered Golden Spring late in our time in Sonoma, but it became a staple for us. We've just moved, and I ordered from here more times that I care to admit while our kitchen was packed up. My favorite dish was the Garlic pork with eggplant. The eggplant was always done perfectly and the sauce was this awesome combination of savory and sweet. This is my new favorite Chinese restaurant! I wish I would have known about this GEM years ago. The pot stickers were cooked to perfection and everything else I ordered was bursting with flavor. I've been coming to Golden Springs for over almost two decades at this point and thought it was due time to write up some of the great dishes this sweet little spot serves. They're timely, delicious, and very accommodating. Crispy Hunan Beef - Sweet, salty, and deliciously crispy - they serve them with small side of crispy wonton slices as well. SO good! Potstickers - Again one of their best - juicy and packed with flavor, best dipped in a combination of their chili oil, vinegar, and splash of soy sauce. YUM! General Tso's Chicken - Extremely flavorful with a slight crisp bite. A must have over some steamed rice. Szechaun Chicken - This is a favorite of my brother's and also another flavor hit. I will say the takeout version can tend to be a little bit soggy (due to steam in the box on the way home) but is superb if you're going to dine in. Any of their Won Ton soups - the broth is very delicate and flavorful and you can't go wrong with the seasoning of the wonton fillings. My personal favorite is the BBQ Pork Won Ton soup - perfect for when you need something hot and cozy. Chow Mein and Lo Noodles - Always a hit, especially any of their meat options. If you're looking for more of a 'wet' or saucy noodle, Lo Noodles are your best bet! Don't let some of the reviews here deter you too much as I think some are either just unfortunate one-off experiences or commentary made for the sake of getting a few laughs. Ken and his family have poured so much of their love into this restaurant for the many years they've been here and truly love Sonoma. I hope you'll give them a try. read more

Really good for the price & for being in Sonoma. They were quick, it only took 15 min to get my food. I got the Hong Kong style Chow mein (the noodles in this are supposed to be hard, they fry them then the sauce softens it all back up as you eat with just a bit of satisfying crunch, don't order the Hong Kong style if that's not what you want) and it was just what I expected and wanted, lots of fresh vegetables and good quality meat. The Peking duck is not really Peking duck, it's more like the roast duck you'd get at ranch 99 but so is the price, so that works out fine if you go in with the right expectation, also pretty yummy. The pancakes that came with the duck wasn't great though. The bbq pork spare ribs were great, very sticky and sweet and savory. I will come back! read more

After Black Friday shopping in Petaluma, we were hungry for some Chinese. Not familiar with the area, we saw a great review for this place and decided to try it. Yum! Reminds me of the suburban Chinese food of my youth. General Tao's chicken - sauce was delicious, but not too thick. Green peppers, onions and broccoli were perfectly cooked. Chicken could have been more plentiful. Side of white rice was just right. Chicken fried rice - was flavorful on its own! Nice chunks of chicken, fresh peas and carrots mixed with tender bits of egg. I cannot believe that Sonoma Magazine rated this Chinese restaurant as #10 of the top Chinese restaurants in Sonoma county by Sonoma Magazine. We had vegetable chow mien, fried won tons and sesame chicken. The chow mien was bland with a strange odor, the wontons were oily, the sweet and sour sauce pale in color, and the sesame chicken, although OK with flavor, had no sesame seeds. When the Napa Line Crew comes to town, we always stop by for lunch and have General Tao's Chicken. This is the best sweet and spicy chicken disk we have found in our turf. That's from the Benicia and Carquinez bridges, NW parts of Solano county, all of Napa county, SE parts of Sonoma county, and the SW parts of Yolo county. That's a big area for six guys! A couple guys have had other lunch specials which were deemed excellent, but the Generals is the best! The best place for Chinese in Sonoma is here. I have several dishes over three visits. The General Tao's chicken was spicy and sweet, the ginger beef was tender with oodles of onions and all deliciously fragrant, and the prawns in lobster sauce had large pieces of firm and flavorful shrimp. EXCELLENT! No more driving into town for this Springs resident, no more driving to Petaluma for my Chinese food fix. The place was immaculate, a bit dated, but it was very clean, great service, cold as ice beer, and great food. This will be this family's eating spot.
