First time eating here. Recommended by many co-workers. My husband and I each got the combo and decided to forego the lo mein and rice (keto diets). We got the Teriyaki Chicken, BBQ Pork, the last dish was chicken with veggies - there are a few flavor options for this, such as Bourbon Chicken, Kung Pao Chicken, Mushroom Chicken, etc. I got the Kung Pao. The food was pretty good. However, the chicken in the Kung Pao was kinda gross. It looked like it had been chewed and put back in there. Taste was "off". The Kung Pao is supposed to have some "heat" (flavor) to it, though it wasn't hot at all. Which was fine. We chose to get the meal without any added sauces. And everything was really good without sauce! The reason we do this is 1) Keto diet (sugar) and 2) (possibility of) MSG. Although, I don't think, from what we had, which was grilled with sauce, that there is MSG in their sauces. If so, very little. I can taste MSG, and I didn't taste it. The meats (except the Kung Pao) had a nice grill char to them which enhanced their flavor. We chose this place for lunch knowing that it was cafeteria style (dished/served by the employees) particularly, because one has only so much time for lunch when they are working. So it worked out very well. Very fast, with hardly any wait at all. I saw that one person who reviewed was upset with the cafeteria style service... I'm not sure what his qualm was. It isn't like random people are breathing on the food. It is the same people that cook it, so what is the problem.. And yes, food is served in styrofoam containers with plasticware. It IS a "fast food" Chinese restaurant afterall. Is it my favorite Chinese place in town. No. At least not at this time. Would we go back? Absolutely! read more

It had been a while since I had dined at the Golden Star fast food Chinese restaurant, but I found that my earlier review from 2018 still stands the test of time. The Golden Star's exterior...particularly the grounds with all the weeds...does not give off the best impression. But, inside the restaurant is nicer than you might expect looking from the exterior. It is roomy enough and clean and comfortable. As you walk in you are faced with a counter with pre-prepared food in warming trays. An efficient and friendly Oriental lady fills a styrofoam basket with the food you desire. She had me all set within one or two minutes. The selections are limited and much of the online menu is not available. Today I ordered combo "C" which comes with three offerings along with fried rice and lo mein noodles. They also include a very small little spring roll along with your meal and a couple little packets of soy sauce. I wanted to try Mongolian beef but it was not available. I also wanted to try their curry chicken. No luck. It was not available. I ended up with their "spicy beef" which is virtually the same as the Mongolian beef, General Tso's chicken, and Kung Pao chicken. The tiny spring roll included free with the meal was chewy and had virtually no filling. It was tasteless and a total waste. Why bother? Rate it a "D." The spicy beef was tender and the flavor wasn't bad. Not great, but not bad. Rate the beef a "C." The Kung Pao chicken was a bit sweet and had a nice flavor. It was fairly good if a little chewy. Rate it a "B-." The General Tso's chicken was very similar. It was ok, but nothing great. Rate it a "B-" also. The fried rice was undistinguished with virtually no egg, carrot, or onion. It was very plain. Rate it a "C+". The lo mein noodles were not too oily as I recently experienced at the Panda Express. Rate them a "C+." So, at the end of the day, the Golden Star is a clean and comfortable place for a quick, casual meal, it has pleasant and quick service, and very reasonable prices for very average food. Rate the total dining experience around THREE AND A QUARTER STARS...meaning ok for fast food. Nothing to write home about. Five star reviews for this place??? The BBQ pork with vegetables, garlic pork, lo mein, and all the combination dinners are delicious and so affordable. I am from NY and the food here reminds me of the tasty food that I used to have back home. I would also like to mention that the service is amazing. The service and menu options were great. However, the food was lacking. We had the Combo #3 with sweet and sour chicken, lo mein, fried rice, kung pao chicken, and broccoli beef as well as the mapo tofu dish with steamed white rice. Sweet & sour chicken - exactly as one would expect. Kung pao chicken - tasted only like white pepper. No other flavor. Definitely not the typically flavorful dish. Broccoli beef - the beef was chewy instead of tender and the sauce was blah. Broccoli was the only thing worth eating. Lo mein - at first I thought it looked like spaghetti with a light coating of marinara. Then I looked again and yes, it was lo mein noodles. The sauce again was blah which was too bad since all that made up this lo mein were the noodles and sauce. Fried rice - it was ok. Nothing to write home about for sure. Mapo tofu - surprisingly, the mapo tofu was not bad. It had a variety of flavors which was wonderful. read more

So much food for the price and it tastes great as well, not to overplay it but it's simple delicious food. 100% recommend you try.

We had this delivered to our hotel and it was fine. I obviously can't comment on the ambiance but the delivery was flawless, they put cardboard on the bottom of the bag so things didn't tip over (i wish every restaurant did this!), and included plenty of sauces, utensils and napkins. The appetizers we ordered were great: the egg rolls were crispy and satisfied our east-coast cravings after decades in california, the fried dumplings were delicious especially paired with the dumpling sauce, and the won wonton soup was hearty and exactly what we wanted in a cool, rainy night. Where things fell short were the mains. The lo main and general that's reminded us of food you'd get at a mall food court. Without knowing the area, maybe that's what Golden Star is. I'd say the mains were fine. Avergaed out with the apps we are up to a Good overall. I'd recommend it to anyone looking for quick, satisfying delivery on a night when you don't feel like going out. read more

Very efficient online ordering. The Pork Wonton soup wasn't like any I've ever gotten, so I wasn't expecting large pieces of pork and vegetables. It was good, just not the normal Wonton soup I've gotten. The chicken with vegetables was good. The general tsao chicken was VERY deep fried and heavy, so we wouldn't get that again. The steamed wontons were a bit under done, so I will cook them a bit more. But the real issue is that we ordered, and paid for, pork lo mein which wasn't in the bag when we got home. read more

This restaurant opened about 15 years ago and was quite good. It then became really bad and you would never see cars there. Recently they got new owners and I love it now. Great BBQ pork (Asian style), sweet and sour chicken which is so tender, fresh and crisp mixed vegetables, great mushroom chicken, and other tasty and delicious choices. As our search for a GOOD Chinese restaurant in Las Cruces continues, we make it to the Golden Star. Rough looking on the outside, we bravely didn't let that discourage us. A very nice woman took our order and food was quickly boxed to go from the display of food warming trays (we're finding cooked to order Chinese is rare in LC). My beef and broccoli was far more broccoli than beef. Mixed vegetables were average. My rice was barely edible (but my dogs enjoyed it on their b-fast). Wife got Gen. Tsau chicken that was pretty good and noodles that were also OK. We each paid an additional $1.40 for egg rolls. These turned out to be small and COLD with little flavor (purchased at Sam's Club?). Dinner for 2 cost almost $20. Truthfully, we would have been better off going to the frozen food isle at Walmart and microwaving our store bought Chinese dinner. read more

Las cruces is a small town in the middle of nowhere. If you're from other places or ate Chinese food somewhere else then yes, this place would be rated really low. Just because this place is in las cruces and in comparison to other Chinese restaurants in town I would highly recommend this place. Portion and the price: they serve a large amount of food for very cheap. Honestly, I really think they under charged the customers for that huge amount of food they give . I am not complaining. I am just making a statement. Low mein: the bestest! Very flavorful and not too dried. Chicken bbq: highly recommend it. Fried rice was not that great. It lacked flavor. To be candid, between the fried rice and white rice. I wouldn't be able to tell the differences. Customer service : very friendly! I used to like this restaurant, but the quality of the food has gone down significantly since they switched primarily to take-out and online delivery. Some issues I have encountered over the past few months include the following: (1) taste and freshness of food has gone down, (2) my egg drop soup was foamy and a greenish color, (3) an order of orange chicken arrived as a box of rice with no orange chicken, (4) my combination order did not have spring rolls in it, (5) some of the pork tasted like soap, and (6) they sometimes substituted italian spaghetti-type noodles for their usual noodles. It seems that the quality of the food benefits from the customer actually being able to see the order being prepared. The employees do not seem to do their job when they are not being watched. As a result, I do not recommend ordering from this place unless you are physically present and watching the employees prepare your order. (I'm not sure I will go back, even after they reopen, given how terrible the quality of the food has been lately.) read more

This place used to be great, but it has gone down hill. Used their drive thru on 1/10/21. Prices have gone up and quality has gone down the toilet. Ordered Kung Pao Chicken and Broccoli Beef. Broccoli was raw and cold, there was one tiny piece of beef. Two very small pieces of chicken in the Kung Pao - it was mostly large chunks of squash with a few chunks of under-cooked bell pepper. Honestly, I shouldn't be sharing this lil secret with you all. But, against my better judgement, I will give you some insight on why this spot is such a hidden gem. For $3 you can forgo the vegetables and load up on just orange chicken a-la-carte. They don't let you get the "good" grilled chicken at this price, but I'll take the hidden-item-menu discounts. One must be prepared to read in between the lines at the Chinese fast food establishments. I believe that some of their soul food hits the spot so darn good that I automatically assume there are high levels of monosodium glutamate.
