Their Egg Tarts are quite good too, with a creamy custard, but I do wish the puff pastry was somewhat crispier. A guilty pleasure of mine is coming to work slightly later than usual (I get to work at 7:30, give me a break), to sit down in a Chinese bakery and enjoy a cup of coffee and whatever inexpensive eat they have, with all the other geriatric Chinese patrons. To put it in words "Old Chinese people are goals" - ex-coworker who hated her supervisor so much she decided she'd rather be unemployed. The coffee isn't anything special. Hell, it's not even anything. It's your $1 deli coffee you can get anywhere. What I really indulge on at the break of dawn are the $2.75 pan fried noodles that'll last me two meals. Yes, I can survive a whole day on $2.75. And you can too *wink*. God, I love pan fried noodles. If I didn't have an eating disordered, I'd eat this every day and I'd still be able to put in for my kids' college funds. Are we still doing that? Believing in college degrees? Anywho, I'd come here quick because 9 out of 10, their chasiubaos (roast pork buns) are sold out. I think all the geriatrics get to them first (cuz they know wassup). Highly recommend this place if you want some dimsum in Brooklyn (Ave U)! This spot is a little small but the dimsum is really good ($3.25 each). The roast duck was really good, a little cold but still super delicious. Service was really fast. I used to live near the old one by Bay Parkway, but now closer to this 2nd chain. The old one seems to have better mix of variety and makes some of the "holiday" stuff... especially during Chinese New Year. The newer one - has your basics - mini versions of popular Chinese bakery "baos"... like roast pork, pineapple, milk, coconut shred, and many more... you can mix & match, any combo of 3 for $1.50. Also - their specialty - the pre-made steam baos! Comes in a box of 6, right as you enter - to your right. A variety of goods - it's the "white" buns - not baked but steam. Love the char shiu and choy yuk baos! They are the best ones! Keeps for about a week in your fridge - great for quick snack! For me - this is our weekend brunch of choice when we don't have the patience to wait for over an hour for "Dim Sum" - a block away. They have a good selection of steam treats (chicken feet, black bean/garlic spare ribs, beef & shrimp rice roll, and their tiny rice boxes are decent. I really like the "spare ribs w/ chicken feet" steam rice; their fried dumplings are also good. Just remember this is still a bakery - so the quality will not match the Dim Sum restaurants. It's really the "poor man's dim sum"... for less money. People are nice here - always willing to accommodate as much as they can. This is the latest addition to the Golden Steamer chain of Chinese bakeries that has recently opened in Bensonhurst. I have been a lover of steamed pork buns or bao since I was a kid. Most non Asians go for the baked version but is the harder to find steamed kind I love. Golden Steamers version is perfect. Soft,warm,sweet and savory with lots of pork in a great sauce. I believe they are better than the over rated ones at Hop Shing in Chinatown. They sell them along with many other sweet and savory varieties both hot out of their steamer or pre packaged. 6 prepackaged buns for 4 bucks is an absolute steal. You can't go wrong ordering the steamed custard bun (sweet) or the big bun (savory). The bun itself is slightly sweet and chewy. There is so much content inside. If you aren't sure what order, you can opt to get the pre-prepared to go trays which have 6. The sections are labeled also in english to help figure out which is which. This is my go-to weekend dim sum spot! I'm here every other week for their dim sum and never spend more than $15 to fill two people up. The service here is one of the best I've seen at a bakery. Generally, service is not high up on the priority list for Chinese eateries. The original Golden Steamer location is a few avenues down under the Bay Parkway train station. The service there is definitely not as good as it is at this location. The best part about dim sum at this bakery, besides the price, is their fresh rice rolls! They have beef, pork, shrimp, and dried shrimp with cilantro. The rice rolls are so smooth and that's what got us coming back here again and again. The -1 star is for running out of items. Since they are a small bakery they only make small batches of the dim sum so if you come at the wrong time, they might be out of certain dishes. read more

I live closer to the Bay Parkway one and also the Bay Parkway one was the first Golden Steamer to open on 86th street. I go to the 20th avenue one from time to time when my fiance and his mom are grocery shopping around 20th avenue. The bakery is just about the same size as the one on 86th street, but feels more spacious and also less people. We typically come here to buy their buns to steam for breakfast during the work week. The staff are friendly and helpful. I feel that the one on 86th street has more variety in terms of food and treats. So far no complaints about this bakery. Love that they have miniature buns! Good size for kids to eat but quality is mediocre. Their rice roll is pretty good only if its fresh. Some ladies are nice enough to make it fresh for you but most of the time you would have to buy the ones already rolled and put on the steamer which makes the rice roll hard on the edges. Same goes with all the fried noodles. Tea egg is flavorful. Coffee is decent not milk tea though. "Big bun" from the steamer is good (it has quail egg, pork,lop cheurng), steamed bbq pork bun is also good. If you get steamed mantou, eat it right away! If not it gets hard when cooled.. They have a limited selection of dim sum but do get their shu mai and spare ribs. They no longer sell fried dumplings in this shop, I'm not sure about the one on bay parkway 86st. read more

Although I don't live near by, I work at a tutor center a few blocks away and I would always come by to get lunch before work. Had a not so great first time experience. Sister and I wanted pork buns and dumplings and were super stoked to try golden steamer since everyone ravesss about it. It was about 4pm on a Friday afternoon. The place was deserted. We walked in and were greeted by everyone asked if we needed help. We wanted to look around first. They were mopping up the floor with bleach and cleaner so we were super careful about where we stepped. Any who, we asked if we could have an order of dumplings and they stated they didn't have any left. We moved over to the fridge section and looked at the different selections of buns. They had regular pork buns, veggie ones, pork and veggie etc. We picked out regular pork buns. And charged $5 for 6. We thought ok no big deal. We get home, heat one up and turns out it was full of veggies. So buyer beware. No sure if they'll labeling is really accurate. All in all a little disappointed. read more
