The crew worked efficiently, kept the roof organized throughout the project, and provided updates along the way. Notice the sloppy tar work on the skylights. He stood me up on December 21st, 2017 to 'scrape off' the visible tar. Never showed and offered $1500 back to use someone else. It's all memorialized in text massages. I've yet to receive any restitution. His work and his word are worthless. Since posting this review this morning, I have gotten threatening text messages from Eden Goldenberg with respect to my livelihood. Beware of this businessman. In response to Eden Goldenberg's message below...the house was built in 2003. I don't consider that to be 'very old.' Update...Filed small claims court suit in April 2018. Eden Goldenberg never showed. I was awarded the total amount by the judge (4K+ court costs). The guy was very considerate and looked at everything, then he called Charles back, who called me, and quoted me $6,500 to replace the entire 250 square foot roof. He kept saying it was 500 square feet, which it definitely is not (he had not seen it in person). I tried to talk through various options with him, but as soon as it became clear I likely wasn't going to spend $6,500 on the spot to replace the entire roof, he became disinterested and eventually hung up on me. I get Charles not wanting to waste time, but the numbers he was throwing at me seemed very large, especially for the situation. He wasn't wiling to talk through things at all unless I was going to commit to thousands of dollars on the spot. Also, after some less rushed research, $6,500 is a very high price for a 250 square foot flat roof. Charles seemed like a nice enough fellow - but I can't help feeling that I narrowly escaped being taken for a very expensive ride because i needed work done quickly - as anyone with a leaking roof likely can relate to!

Therefore, it's hard to give them more than a couple stars since the main value of having a roof is to prevent leaks, which this roof currently does not do. ORIGINAL: In short -- highly recommend. We called C. Johnston after suffering from sporadic leaks in our new apartment for the last 6 months. Charles, his sons, Santiago and the crew did a phenomenal job on a difficult project that involved laying down a new roof and replacing a skylight at our coop in SoHo. Much of the roof was underneath a large deck that had to be moved (and then reassembled) in order to replace the roof. The deck was put back together in great condition, and the new roof has withstood a few storms already with no leaks. The price was fair (Charles specifically made a point to not oversell a more expensive method when it wasn't needed) the communication was clear & frequent, and the team left my place in better condition then when they arrived. FWIW they're also the only roofers we've had that haven't tracked tar anywhere in my apartment. If you're considering a new roof in NYC, you'd be dumb not to call C. Johnston.

If they didn't already have my substantial deposit, I would have backed out after they delayed my start date three weeks past due. Granted some of the delay was due to poor weather, but my property agent couldn't even get a call back after repeated attempts to speak with the owner. When she did, he literally yelled for inquiring when the contractors would start work. Additionally they were sloppy in their handwork covering a DEP water main opening with cement which would prevent any city workers from accessing it if necessary in the future. When they claimed the job was completed, they left the yard a mess with multiple pieces of plywood and tarp balled up in the yard. What professional company leaves their debris in the clients yard especially when the contract expressly says they will clean up all materials and trash at the work site upon completion. Do not go with this company unless you are looking to have your project take 2-3x as long as you initially expect and a sloppy job on top of that.

The one thing that I'm angry about is that when he put his ladder to look at the gutter he actually made it worse. He banged on the my aluminum gutter so hard that it bent. I was on the roof watching him do it. When he climbed the ladder he said my gutter was bad and that is bent... and then i told him that it was straight until he banged his ladder into it and he replied that there was no other way to get his ladder up without doing that.
