I was looking for a nice affordable spot for my birthday dinner with plenty of vegetarian options. I had heard Golden west is great, but upon reading the most recent reviews I got a little nervous. We decided to try it out anyways, and I am SO glad we did. This was some of the best food I have eaten since moving to Baltimore. We started with the teriyaki Brussels and the garlic fries which came out fast and were both amazing. For dinner I got the Aztec burrito and my partner got the chorizo burrito. The portions were HUGE and after having devoured our apps we were only able to eat half of them, which we always love because that means leftovers! The sauces on our burritos was spicy and tasted super authentic. Our waitress was incredible nice, the patio outside was super cute, the service was fast for a Friday night, and the food was a knockout. Would recommend this spot to anyone. read more

Thoroughly enjoyed Golden West Cafe! My friend who's vegan picked it because they have lots of yummy vegan options. As the rebellious carnivore, though, I ordered their hangover burger - which was SO decadent. It comes with a big ole fried egg on top and some bacon. The bun was nice and soft and really, it was the perfect combo! I got it with tatter tots, like the adult that I am! Perfection! Also ordered their salad, which was HUGE! My friends got the Vegan Burrito and Sweet Potato Fries, which they enjoyed. I also LOVED the Lavender lemonade - refreshingly light. My friend ordered the OK and really liked it too. Seemed fresh squeezed During COVID, you order at the window, take a number and seat yourself outside. They had nice heat lamps and it definitely fills up, so get there early! Their ChikN Sandwiches are amazing! Occasionally the wait can be long because their food is amazing and everyone wants some. The only time I had to wait it was a holiday. Every other time the food has come out fast and delicious. The servers are very friendly and everyone is very observant of Covid protocols. This week, I was scheduled a business meeting here and so I previewed the menu before arrival. I was a bit skeptical because it's mostly vegetarian choices. However, I ordered a chicken, brie and bacon sandwich and it was amazing. The chutney closed the deal and it was on the freshest cibatta bread. 10 out of 10! My colleague ordered the fish tacos and was equally happy with her meal. The server was particularly patient while we talked business and we received excellent service. Fried perfectly and the sauce on it was *chefs kiss*. The motulenos was also such a great choice. Everything tasted so fresh and the sweetness from the bananas in the dish actually surprised me because they complimented the dish so well! *my friend also wanted to mention that he doesn't realize like regular sausage but tried the vegan sausage here and loved it! The food is great, but it takes a long time to come out. I was here once in the last 12 months and the wait time was even worse than the first time. The waiter was good but was clueless on what was going and unable to give a heads up about what was going on or how much longer it was going to take. You want the tots! I'm not a tater tot gal, but these tots, coupled with the dipping sauces are out of this world. The guacamole and chips are great as well, could probably use a little more heat but still very tasty. My BLT left a little to be desired, not sure what was missing, but it seemed very bland (how can bacon be bland?‍) They were very accommodating regarding the menu, but ran out of things in the middle of brunch. read more

BEFORE COVID: I was hoping they had a Taco Tuesday deals but they only have a deal on the 2nd and 4th Tuesday of the Month starting at 9 pm. Happy Hour is M-F 3-7pm. The customer service was not the best. As soon as we walked in the host didn't tell us it was happy hour and only at the long bar. When I found out it was still happy hour, I went to sit at the long bar. We ordered 2 Vegan Buffalo Sandwiches with garlic fries and Teriyaki Brussels sprouts. The Buffalo Sandwiches were simple and nothing special about them. I could've made it myself. A bun, a vegan chicken patty, lettuce, tomato, 2 pickles and fries with barley any garlic on it (SEE IMAGE). Kind of like a crabby patty or a Burger King sandwich. There was no effort put into making the sandwich. Rating this entire meal with the garlic fries that had NO FRIES a 3/5. Would I recommend to go out of your way to come here? It was my first time here. Their Bang Bang Shrimp Lettuce Wraps, Vegan Citrus Short Rib Bahn Mi and Kale Caesar Salad was really good. I will definitely order that again. I would have gave this place 5 stars but was disappointed with the garlic fries I ordered. Who thought it was a good idea to dump the garlic on top of my fries like this? The smell was so pungent that I had to cover it with a napkin. Our waitress Olivia immediately took it back and replaced it with plain fries. If it's your first time here, know that street parking sucks on the weekends and it's super congested. The kitchen is also super slow. So if you're "hangry" and expecting your food to fly out of the kitchen, it's not. You're going to wait about 20 minutes for just your appetizers to arrive. What a treat this place is. We came here on a snowy day with our two toddlers and the food was delicious, our server was really nice and the atmosphere was a lot of fun. I had the Aztec burrito, my husband had the hangover burger and the kids had kids burgers. Everything was really good and fresh. We also tried the banana vegan cupcake and chocolate eclair. They were both delicious. I also like that they have lots of vegetable and vegan dishes since I'm trying to reduce my meat consumption. It was the best of times... it was the worst of times at Golden West Cafe. I'll leave the worst to the end. As you can see, I am showing my deep love with a four star rating. Golden West reminds me of the bygone days of 90s/00s East Village NYC (good ol days RIP), specifically Avenues A and B, where you could grab decent vegan comfort food at haunts like Sidewalk Cafe, 7A, Life and Kates Joint. The first three also had stuff for non vegans, as does Golden West, so if you're friend is craving a burger or bacon, etc., you can still join them and get a tofu scramble or Buffalo tofu. And booze. Golden West really does have it all! For our first visit, which was for dinner, I was compelled to order more than I could eat. Or was that the second visit? It was both visits. There is just so much on the menu for vegans, whether you're more in the mood for salad... or an Impossible Burger (made completely insanely over-the-top with all kinds of toppings)... or a burrito with faux-rizo. My friend told me that I had to order the pumpkin curry soup if I knew what was good for me, so I did. It's incredible. Think spicy pumpkin coconut creamy life blood. It's topped with pumpkin seeds and is super filling so unless you're not ordering much, get the cup. We also shared the aforementioned Buffalo tofu, which is exactly what you'd expect: cubes of fried, chewy tofu smothered in Buffalo sauce. I practiced restraint here because I knew I was in for it with the vegan burrito. Wow!! Just what I needed that evening, because it's jam packed with spicy faux chorizo, beans and the most amazing shredded hash brown potatoes which made it next level. On that first visit, we had an awesome server. We were at a table up front and both our waiter and the extremely attentive and sweet manager dude kept coming over to us to make sure we had everything we needed. Honestly, if we had only gone once, I would have been blown away by the low-brow/kitschy/rock & roll awesomeness of the place, but. The second visit was egregiously bad. We arrived smack dab in the middle of brunch.and were told we would have a 45 minute wait or we could sit at the bar. We were super hungry, so opted to sit at the bar. Bad decision! Normally if you sit at a bar, you can expect pretty decent service. That's the opposite case here. I don't want to dwell on it because I love this place so much, but the bartender pretty much ignored us the entire time until it was time to get the check. I get it. He's busy making drinks. But I couldn't even get one of those. I would ask for things and he'd walk right by, ignoring us to spend time rearranging the bottles or garnishes. That said, brunch was good but you could tell they were slammed back there and the quality wasn't the same (left the seeds off the pumpkin soup, for example). I only write about it here because the experience was bad enough that I wouldn't have returned a second time, no matter how dang good the hashbrowns and Bloody Marys are. If your bartenders don't want to serve food at the bar either get new bartenders or don't serve food at the bar. I'll leave it at that and probably will not return for brunch again, unless I can wait for a table (but I'm honestly not much of a brunch person anyway). It's really swell otherwise. read more

So let me say this ... when my friend picked this spot i was not pleased.. When i looked at the menu and saw alllll the vegan food.. i just wasn't excited. I am not vegan. Not interested. But I'm a good sport .. So we get there and though there was a 20+ minute wait in the main area, there were empty tables at the bar.. so that's where we sat. Food- My nacho salad with chicken was soooooooo damn good! The chicken was flavorful, guacamole fresh and delicious, the chips were great. I got both the ranch and homemade hot sauce . Yummmmm. I NEVER eat all of my food... And tonight i are every bit of it! I tasted the Korean cauliflower .. it was ok. I've had it much better however. Drinks- sooo.. i wanted a margarita. I asked the waiter about the drink on the menu with mezcal and he said it was like a margarita but Smokey.. well i wanted a margarita and i ordered it. Hummm.. it was very interesting. Tasted like a normal margarita.. at first... but then it was like you were having a margarita next to a Smokey grill... It's a no for me.. Well the waiter asked me how i liked it and i told him i was suffering through it, and he took it back and i got a normal margarita. That was very nice of him. Service- a bit slow but both waiters were pleasant .. and of course see the above Decor- very hip and funky .. weird :-) I wish they offered turkey breakfast meats and a turkey burger ! I finally tried Golden West Cafe after living in the neighborhood for a few months. My mom is vegan and was visiting for the weekend, so it was the perfect chance to try it out! What I really liked? That it is so vegan/vegetarian friendly (almost every dish has a vegan version - clearly marked on the menu). I love to take my mom out to restaurants where she has so many choices, so I loved that. And the service was really great; our waitress was lovely, chatty, friendly, helpful! The inside of the restaurant is fun - eclectic and interesting and homey. Unfortunately, I just found the food a little underwhelming. I ordered the Huevos Motulenos - whole kernel corn cakes topped by two eggs, beans, spicy chili sauce, feta cheese, salsa fresca, fried bananas, and a flour tortilla. When you order now (November 2021), you pull up the menu on the Toast app using the QR code at your table. However, wait staff still come by to take your order, but they go through all of the options on the Toast app. For my order, I had to specify: my tortilla choice (none), egg choice (over easy), allergies (none), chile choice (Xmas), and bean choice (both). It's a lot to go through! Overall, my dish was pretty good. I liked the taste of the corn cake (but wished it was a firmer/more cooked/less mushy texture), and the eggs were cooked exactly as I prefer. However, I didn't taste the salsas at all (there was a very mild pico de gallo on top, but if there were salsas, I couldn't see or taste them really). The fried bananas were a little weird - because they were sooooo sweet - but I guess it's like plantains on a Salvadoran breakfast plate. I ate them first as I didn't want them mixed in. My mom ordered the vegan huevos rancheros (no tortilla; vegan; both beans; Xmas). She isn't a fan of Just Egg normally, but she said that with everything else on top (beans, vegan cheese, pico de gallo), it tasted good all together. I think they probably just skipped/forgot the Xmas sauces on both our plates however, since hers didn't have visible green and red salsas either. Overall, I really enjoyed that they are so vegan friendly, the eclectic decor, and the service! On this first visit, I was a little underwhelmed by the food and a little overwhelmed by the big menu. I went here with a large group and the service was amazing. Our group was fairly large (11 people) the server was hospitable and took our orders on time without hovering. All our meals came out around the same time and we ended up staying there for three hours without a server trying to rush us out the door. There are a lot of options for people with dietary restrictions which makes this a place where everyone can find something to eat. I had the biscuits and gravy which was very yummy and filling. After the last time I ordered from Golden West, I told myself "never again, not worth it" but you put the Sopapilla Enchiladas back on the menu and I was hungry. The name of the dish doesn't describe the meal in the least, since it bears zero resemblance to an enchilada, but I digress. Tonight, I ordered the Sopapilla enchiladas with the egg over hard, with beans as my protein and mixed beans as my bean choice along with red sauce for my sauce option. Kudos for making the egg over hard as per the order, that was pretty much the highlight of the meal. There were approximately 76 beans between and on top of the three 4" x 4" pieces of fried dough, roughly a teaspoon and a half of cheese and NO RED SAUCE anywhere to be found. Had the dish not come with pico de gallo, sour cream and a smidge of guac, it would have been drier than a sheet of cardboard. For $15.99 before tip, I expected a few more beans and a heavier hand with the cheese, especially considering that for the same price, if I ate chicken, that was also a protein option. Did beans suddenly become as pricey as poultry and I missed it? Is there a bean & cheese shortage that I'm unaware of? With the addition of the mandatory 18% tip, this was a meal that should have cost roughly half as much considering the scant amount of ingredients. My dinner ended up being just over $20 and satisfied me less than a burrito bowl at Chipotle would have. In the before times, I would order this dish roughly once a week. It was filling, satisfying and never once as pathetic as what I brought home for dinner tonight. I love your mushroom gravy and biscuits too, but I'm afraid to try them ever again given this last disappointing experience. I don't feel that I got my money's worth in the least. Thankfully, I was easily able to get a parking space on the same block and only had a short walk. My food was ready at the pickup window. I also picked up a vegan donut and cannoli - I ate half of both in the car. At home, I cut into my burrito, poured on the green sauce and fell in love! I ordered the BBQ burger plain with pickles to-go. While it did taste good it was a tad dry. The shoestring garlic fries where kind of lazy too because they just sprinkled little pieces of garlic on the fries with no oil or anything. The service was ok at the window but I was not notified in any manner that my food was done and I waited longer then I needed to. Golden West has the coolest vibe. Stepping in here transports you to an eclectic New Mexico-inspired atmosphere with vintage artwork and gadgets plastered all over the walls. There's also a walk-up window outside for quick to-go ordering. I've liked most of the stuff I've gotten here and there's tons of vegan/vegetarian options, but I also have tried some things I didn't really like, so it can be pretty hit-or-miss. Their brunch options are usually pretty good. I got a vegan cupcake one time that was just awful. It might be worth going through the reviews to see what people recommend: I like their breakfast quesadilla, tater tots with chili mayo + ranch, and ginger turmeric lemonade. The green chile impossible burger sounded better than it actually ended up being but it was alright. The employees are also pretty nice and provide good service. I was stoked to try brunch here for vegan week. We came in specifically to try the vegan special featuring Atlas Monroe's famous fried chicken. We even called in advance to ask if it was still available. The host was kind enough to put our name on the waitlist before we arrived. This allowed us to get seating almost immediately (I would definitely recommend doing this if you don't want to wait 30-45 minutes during peak hours). However, upon sitting down we were told that the vegan fried chicken was already sold out. But we decided to give the restaurant a try anyway. I was pleasantly surprised by the large number of vegan/vegetarian options. And was excited to try the biscuit with mushroom gravy and home fries. My partner ordered Huevos Motulenos. Unfortunately, the biscuit was dense, dry and bland. It lacked the buttery, fluffiness that I want from my biscuits. The gravy helped with the dryness, but didn't add much in the way of flavor (surprisingly, since mushrooms usually pack a nice umami punch). The Huevos Motulenos was a bit more flavorful with kernel corn cakes topped with beans, salsa fresca, Chile sauce, cheese, and bananas. However, the corn cakes themselves were again pretty dry and the flavors didn't always seem to work cohesively. Overall, the atmosphere was cute and vibrant, but the food wasn't great. read more
