Amazing prime rib dinner! I have previously eaten the French Dip (which uses prime rib) but made a special trip tonight for the prime rib. I was not disappointed! Best prime rib I've had in years! This was my second time getting food from here. I have to say that if it was the original time I came here the rating would be much different. But I am glad that I tried it again. Staying up here for a night decided to come and grab some food to go for everyone. We ordered two cheesesteaks because I was informed they are enough for four people. Which is completely true. They are loaded with meat and veggies. They are very dense but not in a bad way. The meat was tasty and the veggies added a nice balance. It was everything you wanted in a sandwich savory crunchy and just overall tasty. My friend had the brilliant idea of asking for au jus. Which added another depth to the sandwich It was flavorful and rich and was just another feather in the cap for the sandwich. The two sides we got were french fries extra crispy and sweet potato fries. The french fries were food the seasoning on them wasn't just salt and pepper but a little spice. The sweet potato fries were unfortunately undercooked. The flavors were there but had they been in the fryer just a bit longer it would have been so much better. As I said before if I had written a review of my first time it would have been much different. We had extremely undercooked pizza that was doughy and pretty much inedible. But this experience definitely redeemed them. People and restaurants have bad days some are worth revisiting and you may be surprised. I was. They definitely know how to do sandwiches. Now Sierra something, worst meal ever. Ordered the Strip $18, Baked potato, Vegetable Beef Soup. 10 minutes elapse, I am informed that the potatoes have just been put in the oven and it will be 30 minutes before they are ready. So I opt for the mashed potatoes instead. I receive the soup which has exactly 2 thinly sliced carrots, some onion remnants and a couple of fatty grisly prices of what I assume is beef. Very little effort mentally or physically was put into this soup. Next arrives the steak and potatoes. The steak is room temperature and the potatoes are instant and flat cold. I ask the waitress if the food could be warmed. 5 minutes go by and the food is returned a little warmer, but the meat cooked medium, is tough and fatty. The waitress brings me a steak knife that is clearly dirty. I return the food ask for a dessert menu and I am informed that ice cream is all they have. The ice cream was delicious. This meal should have been comped. I did not ask they didn't offer. I will not be back. The waitress great except for the dirty eating utensils. read more

Road closures got us to this hidden gem. Tom and his wife opened their doors after hours to rest up and wet our whistles, treated us as if we were family when we got diverted and stayed in town. The Saloon is very clean. You can tell he takes pride in being the owner. He was very knowledgeable about the area with lots of great recommendations. I used to like this place a few years ago. I tried hard to keep liking it. Some of the servers are nice. I've heard some racist music on the speakers. The vibe made me uncomfortable. The food kept getting worse, and worse. I stopped trying. Thank God and America there are other places to eat now. All we need now is a better bar. We stopped by the Golden West for dinner on a Tuesday and were pleasantly surprised by the variety of choices on the menu. We both decided to order the special prime rib. I'm so glad we did. It was cooked to perfection. Even the veggies were well seasoned and cooked perfectly. After coming in from a long day in the cold we appreciated the fire and the excellent service. We generally stop at a Mexican restaurant in Sierraville on our way back from the hot springs but they were closed for the holidays so continued on to Loyalton. Since it was the weekend before Christmas we weren't sure if we would have any luck but when we got within a block we knew they were open because they were lit up and lots of cars in the parking lot. There is a bar when you walk in the door and then the restaurant is just around the corner. Nothing fancy but they seemed to do a pretty good business. We noticed their special was prime rib that night starting at $23.95 depending on the size. I ordered the teriyaki burger with shoestring fries, my partner ordered a chicken dish and our friend ordered onion rings. It took a little while to get our food but it was worth the wait. It came out HOT. Clearly, my burger had just come off the grill. It was cooked slightly over medium rare and it was juicy and delicious. My fires were also served hot. I didn't try the chicken but I did try the onion rings. OMG!!! The were sooooooo good! I could easily bite through the onion without pulling it out of the batter which was also delicious. We all commented about how good the onion rings were and how hot everything was when it was served. We had 4 or 5 beers between us and shared a bread pudding for dessert. The bread pudding was made with croissants so it was much lighter than most bread puddings I've had. I think it needed a little sauce of some kind but it tasted good anyway. The bill came to about $60 for the 3 of us which seemed fair given the amount of food and drink we consumed. It was a wonderful meal with great service. Our server was pleasant and attentive. She seemed to know pretty much everyone in the restaurant which makes sense in a small town like Loyalton. It's definitely my new "go to" when in the area. read more

Shut the front door! I had no idea what we were in store for when we found ourselves hungry in this tiny town. Golden West is a super quaint bar and restaurant complete with local art for sale on the walls. We were seated by the super nice and helpful hostess in a comfy booth and proceeded to look over the menu. I prepared to order a salad and some fries as seems to be the standard veggie fare but then I saw they had a homemade veggie burger on the menu. Let me tell you what-it was amazing! It was a super hearty black bean burger not the standard garden burger patty that leaves a girl wanting more. Of course the burger came with fries of amazing that meant a food baby was imminent. My companion ordered some sort of burger concoction that I think had shredded pork on it and they were just as pleased as I. The service was slow but there was only one server for the place and she was handling it very well. And really it seemed to be the pace of the town and it didn't bother me one bit. If you find yourself in Loyalton this place is definitely worth a stop. read more

Last night Fish Fridays in Loyalton had the team's best take yet on salmon, "Salmon Bruschetta on House-made Pasta," with the weekly best-anywhere clam chowder on the side, for a price that breaks the ratio-qualité-prix indicator anywhere, not just up and down the Pacific Slope of North America. I have looked. Travis and his team do the salmonids, here at the top of the drainage of the Great River of California, better than I have found elsewhere, and I have spent a lifetime looking. My family of 8 dined here this evening. Best ribeye steak I've had since I don't know when (my 3 sons had them too - cooked perfectly). My wife had the chicken marsala which was spot on. My daughter a cheeseburger. My daughter-in-law had the chicken fettuccini. Everything was fabulous. If you're in the area, eat here! Don't miss out!! We were in this small town for business for the week and ate here each day and loved it. The food was delicious and the service was outstanding. During the week I enjoyed; the chicken strips, club sandwich and the cheese burger. All were freshly and deliciously prepared. I will go back next time I am in the area. read more

I stopped here for a late lunch today, only three tables occupied including mine. I ordered a cheeseburger and asked to substitute a salad for the fries, which was an additional $2.00. The waitress took my order for a well done cheeseburger and a small salad with ranch dressing. The burger arrived first, was cooked thoroughly and was very good. The salad never showed up though. 20 minutes later I had to ask again for a salad with ranch. This mistake could have been easily avoided if the waitress had actually written my order down instead of trying to memorize it. She also never came back by to ask how everything was after I had the chance to take a few bites. The waitress decided to socialize with someone in the kitchen instead of tending the dining room. I had much better service last time I was here, and it was a different waitress who was a much harder worker. read more

Nothing was really open on a Wednesday night and we were super happy that this restaurant was. I'm a vegetarian so I wasn't expecting much, but my dinner was really good. I had the baked potato, salad (and it wasn't iceberg!) and sides of asparagus. The margarita was HUGE and tasty and the server was awesome...super attentive and really friendly. Great place to eat in town. I had a hamburger with onion rings and my friend had the chicken strips with fries. I was expecting a small portion since it's a small town... But it wasn't! I have given this place multiple opportunities, for the most part the food is good, but when the cooks can't follow simple instructions for special orders, when more than once you ask for something simple as no mayo on a sandwich and when you get it there's mayo on it, or the meat is over cooked it gets frustrating. I shouldn't have to check my order before taking it home. Like I said, food is good, but the attention to detail is what you get from fast food, I expect more from this place. read more

All my family lives in this town and for any function we go to the GW. My grand father was having his 85th bday party on a Saturday night. We made reservation and they had our table ready. Everyone knows everyone in this town, so everyone was talking. Well, I'm ready to order for my kids so they don't start running around because they don't have anything to do. The server lady was more worried about other things. I asked her twice to get two orders of chicken strips for my kids going. She said, "Hold on, I want to put the order in all together so everyone can eat together." Umm No! I Want My Kids Food First. She pissed me off so I go to the bar and tell them to order me two chicken strip meals. OK they yelled it to the cook. Thank You! She said she wanted all the food to come out together.. Humm Why did one order come out and then 15 min later another one and then an hour after the first order came out the whole party finally had there food. I just kept to the Salad bar so I knew I did not have to wait. After the bday party was over we headed to the bar. After a couple shots and rounds my cousin wanted to pay his bill. She yelled 61.50$ or some shit like that. He was like WHAT! I want to see my print out. She could not find it. OK so how are you gonna say that he owes that if you cant prove it? The tender lady started yelling at him.. No more tabs for you, you need to pay per drink. He got mad and walked outside and she was just going on about it. So all in all it got resolved but WTF..... I came into town the other night and my cousin wanted to meet me for a drink. Being the only bar in town we have to come to this place. Same bartender lady. She got us our first round quick. Place started filling up and we joined a game of dice. I wanted a shot. I told her what I wanted and she was like, "that is so gross how can you shot rum.." OK if I wanted you opinion I would have asked for it. Two guys came in and wanted a room. They were sitting at the high tables and her and this other lady were yelling across the bar to them about what type of room they wanted and what not. I thought it was rude that they could not have walked over to them and did it in more of a professional manner. But nope.... I noticed the bar lady started buying my cousin and his friend beers. I'm like so how do I get on that train for a free poor. This is what she said... "Well, you need to go home and you don't need another beer you have not even bought a second one." WHAT! Telling me I need to go home and I've had one beer? I then asked her what her favorite shot to make was? IDK.. I'm stunned. Most bar tenders like to have a signature shot they make. NOT This Lady. Alright give us another round... She got my drink right and not my cousins and he is in here all the time. He told her I'm not drinking this, I drink out of a bottle. She got pissed. I told her I asked for a round that means the same things we ordered before. STUPID. Anyways we want to leave to go watch the lakers game. I wanted to pay my tab. Looked around maybe she was busy or something. 15 Min later she comes around the corner with her mouthful of food.. My friend was like she wants to pay. 6$ Umm OK for all that no prob. Although I like this place because it is locally owned and operated it is just plain boring.. All the old men of Sierra Valley hang out here and hit on all the school kids that come in to play pool or just listen to music. TVs are so out dated its no fun when you have to watch a game on a 18' screen that shakes. This place could be fun but not one person that works here makes it fun..... I think You need to Look Into Getting a Younger Bar Tender and Not Some Older Lady that has no personality And Alwasy Bitchy. read more

Last night we had dinner at the GWS,nothing open in Sierraville ,so 13 miles ow drive to Loyalton and the GWS is was, we got looked over once or twice being from out of town and all,but every one was nice ,from the 3 generations of cowboys to the halloween celebrating kids from the high school . The waitress,only one working was friendly and pleasant,the food was good albeit it took a bit to arrive,but it was good tasting and big meal.The place is just that,nothing fancy,a place were all the locals go and everyone knows everyone.The food has definite old style feel to it,real milk shakes,big serving amounts. We came, we saw......we dominated. This year we came to the Ole Golden West Saloon a little later than normal. Showed up at something like 8pm instead of 4. The place was kind of jumpin. Well, you know, for a bar out in the middle of nowhere with no other bar within 50 miles. There was biker looking people, farming looking people, young looking people and then us COOL lookin redneck folk. We ordered drinks and hung out in the back by the pool tables. Of course after ordering drinks I grabbed five cups of dice for a liars dice game. First LOSER owes a shot. So we play an epic battle and one of my buddies loses. I ended up ordering him a big ole shot(seriously it was more like a double) of Early Times whiskey(only cost $3.50). That stuff is nasty! Just smellin it made me feel bad for him. We shot a little bit of pool and watched the baseball game on the tv. Service was once again very friendly and accomodating. We seriously had a good time. Our experience here was an unexpected pleasure! I had a half order of fish and chips... The fish was fantastic. The salad bar was fresh and appealing. She had a hot turkey grilled pesto sandwich on sourdough bread and it was delicious! The service was wonderful. There was a beautiful crackling fire in the fireplace making for a lovely setting. A lovely lady sitting in a wheel chair by herself probably heard us discussing what to order and asked if she could make a suggestion. We said "sure" and took her suggestion. We had some of our employees stay here while assisting with a wildfire not across the border into Nevada. The staff were incredibly nice and helpful when I was making reservations. They just returned home and both employees were raving about how nice "Mrs. Suzie" was! They appreciated how clean the rooms were and absolutely loved the food. My friend and I work up the mountain from this restaurant and we decided to stop in and have dinner. We walked in and seated ourselves close to the beautiful lit fireplace in a empty dining room. A young girl came over and asked us what we would like drink, I asked her what the special was and the soup of the day, which she had no knowledge of. We requested coffee and hot cocoa and she came back shortly with our request and walked away. I drank my coffee and my cup sat empty for a good 15 minutes, my friend saw a waitress and asked if she could refill my cup. She filled my cup, took our order, brought me my salad along with a cut up cold hoagie roll with a piece that didn't match the rest of the bread, and then we sat for 45 minutes waiting for our entree while people that came in after us placed their order and we're served, ate, and left before we were brought our order. Finally, our food comes and my plate of chicken Bruschetta looks a mess, cold, dry, thinly sliced chicken breast, ( no more than 3oz) and over cooked broccolini, all sitting in a watery reduction. I ate 2 bites and that's all I could stomach. It took the waitress at least 20 minutes to come back to ask if everything was ok. I told her it was not and that my food and the service were unacceptable and that I was not going to eat it or pay for it. She said she was going to ask Travis if my meal could be comped, thank god he obliged because after 1.5-2 hours of horrible service/food, I was ready to flip my lid! We were really sad because it was such a cool spot, but obviously it is more of a local drinking hole/hangout than a decent eatery. read more

Excellent! Outstanding!Real homestyle cuisine. We were searching for a hole in the wall, off the beaten path place to eat at before heading home, on a whim Loyalton was the town we stopped at. The Golden West Saloon looked like the only place open so we decided to give it a shot. They had awesome specials; including the side I ordered of homemade Mac n Cheese, it had Housemade Bacon, Noodles made from Scratch, best I've ever had!I wanted the Prime Rib but we got there a little too early so I ordered something you don't see too often on menus a Ground Sirloin Patty with onions and gravy!I ordered it just like grandma used to make, medium; my boyfriend had the Chicken Parmesan. This place is a culinary hidden gold nugget!!Homemade pickled beets on the salad bar, homemade Lemon Herb bread still warm from the oven. My Sirloin was cooked perfectly and brought a nostalgic tear to my eye, the Chicken Parmesan was massive, juicy and perfect. This was my birthday dinner that was a completely unexpected treat, first of many more here to come! read more
