Walking in, we noticed this great little spot. It seemed like it was gonna be great for breakfast. We were seated quickly in our drinks were brought out quickly. The house this was very nice and our waitress showed up in no time .The menu had quite a bit of everything on it. It had a great choices for breakfast lunch and dinner all in one menu. My wife had what was called the four deuces pancakes, two sausage, two bacon eggs and she said it was all very good. I went with the chicken fried steak. I read a couple of reviews where they said their chicken fried steak was overcooked in things. Mine wasn't. Mine was very good. The gravy was good. I substituted the bread for a biscuit and upgraded for $1.99 and got the gravy. It was all super yummy. The bacon could've used some work from my wife's plate lol but other than that, everything was super good. The reason that I didn't give it a five star is because it was extremely pricey four dollars for a drink and $15 for a breakfast like this is quite high. We haven't been to this restaurant in a loooong time, but decided to stop in because we were buying a lottery ticket next door. Apparently, Sierra Cafe has several locations in the Reno area.. The chocolate peanut butter cake is quite good, the meatball soup was nice and the prime rib sandwich was good but a little dry. Our server, didn't catch his name, was very friendly and fast. I might suggest having a little guacamole on hand to compliment their Mexican dishes? The steak quesadilla would have been delicious if only for some guacamole. read more

This was highly recommended by family we were traveling through the area with. Apparently it used to be the go to cheap breakfast spot. We got in, got comped some food credit after a little gambling, just to kill some time and wait for the roads to clear. Elvia our server was very nice, efficient and accommodating. Biscuit and gravy were good, not overtly salty or flour -full. My cousin had the double duces and all the food was good, pancakes were fluffy and for 13$ was a great deal. Her husband ordered a chicken fried steak breakfast. I loved the plating, it looked delicious, unfortunately, he said the chicken fried steak was over cooked and hard so a 20$ let down. My husband ordered the hangover burger medium with well done hash browns. A decent size burger that looked fresh, not frozen, again way over cooked like a charcoal patty. He showed it to Elvia and she was very apologetic about taking it back. She brought the second plate and it was grayish and did not looked cooked in my opinion. My husband bite into it and it was raw. Needless to say he didn't eat. I gave 3 stars for the Elvia and though the burger was inedible the cook did make the entire plate with fresh food rather then pulling the char patty and replacing it with all the same cold food on the plate.This place needs some updating, tables, carpet, paint could really spruce it up. According to Margery or Margaret the cashier it's closing soon for a remodel. I'm hoping that when we come through again we can give it another try. Had an errand to run at Donner Lake and popped in for breakfast. The nice thing about eating at this restaurant is that there is no wait on a Saturday morning. In the middle of Gold Ranch Casino, lots of traffic on the California side to get lotto tickets. The casino was not that crowded as was the cafe. This has a coffee shop feel in a casino. The wait staff was very friendly. My meal was average as the hamburger had no flavor and I had to drown it in salt. Mushroom and onion gravy was ok. Egg over medium on top. Had a taste of the bloody mary and was not too crazy for the mix. The breakfast was filling for the work we had ahead of us. read more

Time for an update..... five years later. We have been coming here for decades. A ritual stop off. Not as good as it used to be based on my last 4 trips this past year. We liked it because the prices were really good. Its diner food that isn't high quality, think Dennys but when it was inexpensive, it was just fine. Now a lunch for two ends up costing us $40+ after tip that I think I should have just went to Port of Subs inside the gas station. Ordered the nachos because it said with homemade salsa. It was probably the grossest nachos I ever had! The meat looked 5 days old and crispy. The salsa was a Wtf is that! it looked like salad dressing and didn't taste good either. Cheese was lumpy. Bleh, I could barely eat it. They still have their brick oven pizza on the menu so I would recommend that as it is fresh and made to order. Service is friendly although limited. What I mean is that there is usually no more than 2 people on staff that I am surprised that they don't have a sign that says, "closed due to staffing issues" like the coffee shop inside there does. For that reason, I like supporting the small business and will probably continue to stop but it won't be a MUST do like years past. read more

If you're on your way to or from Reno, NV over i80, this is a must stop if you're hungry. There are often discounts offered if you use your players card, the staff is friendly, service is prompt, portions are large (shareable). It's a much better option than fast food or a sub way sandwich in my opinion. Beware of this place. I sat down to eat. While sitting there I decided to go to the counter and order to go. I ordered a breakfast burrito. I paid cash. She handed me the receipt. It had a $2.50 service charge. What is this? She told me it was to go orders charge. Nowhere on the menu or around the register does it say anything about a service charge. I asked for the $2.50 back or all of my money. The waitress said she would get the manager on duty because she could not do a refund. After ten minutes the manager came by and ignored me. We were quite hungry coming home to Reno from Sacramento area so we stopped in for dinner. Seniors from Reno used to rave about the great specials this place offered and they used to go often even if it was far out at the California border. It is quite a drive for anyone to head out here to eat or play in their casino. Therefore, they should have food deals and a nice clean establishment. I guess they expect the travelers passing by to play their slots and eat their food so that they don't need the locals. I was shocked that the restaurant on a Thursday evening was almost vacant with one table with diners. We were hungry and it was 6pm so we decided to stay and try it. I was shocked at the prices for a cafe. It was as costly as the really nice restaurants in Reno. The first problem was the fact that the server took 15 mins before taking our order. I noticed they were chatting in a booth when I came in. We decided to get a large pizza and salads. The ONLY reason I am giving this place a 3 star review is that the pizza was pretty good. Service was slow, the interior is not as clean and nice as I expect and I am sure some of the smoke from the casino gets in so I was glad we were in the back. But you walk through the casino if you park in back. The smoke was heavy. Not sure I would ever drive from South Reno to eat or play slots here. I think they are losing the locals. read more

I was driving to Reno and decided to stop at the Sierra Cafe for a quick bite to eat. It's right off the freeway attached to a casino and there's a gas station in front too. I tried the French Toast with apples, and sausage. It was very flavorful with a hint of cinnamon too. The sausage was outstanding, not sure where they purchased it from, doubt they make their own, but it was very flavorful. The service was quick and the server friendly. Being connected to casino, the restaurant did have a smell of cigarette smoke smell, which is unfortunate this day and age. First I would like to say that Cindy the one woman show was super sweet and speedy with the service. I can't fault her for working here. The food was absolutely horrible. Shame on the owners for not doing better quality control. The food while it doesn't look too bad it was old. I ordered eggs Benedict. The hash browns tasted like stale/rancid oil. I scraped off the crispy part (usually the best part) to see if maybe the inside hash browns tasted better. Nope. The eggs were fine surprisingly but the sauce , the bread all disgusting. The slices of lunch meat that are supposed to be Canadian bacon or ham was rotten. I will never eat here again. I used the restroom of the casino and will say that smelled clean and was very tidy. So unless you're just using this as a restroom break I don't see any other reason to come in here. This place needs an overhaul. read more

Based on a friend's recommendation - we skipped Boom Town and came to the Sierra Cafe @ the GOLD RANCH casino for our brunch... and we're so glad we did! We arrived at the counter at 10:35am there's no line and were seated within a few minutes. We were seated at a round table served by Mandy (?) and she has a sunny, bright smile which completely set the tone for the rest of our dining experience. :) She was fast, efficient and really knew her stuff... answered all our questions about the menu promptly and confidently without skipping a beat. We also ordered 2 coffees and she asked us if we'll be drinking more than 2 cups -- we said yes, and she promptly brought us a small carafe to ensure we'll always have coffee. Smart lady! Food is very good here at an excellent value! Our party ordered 2 of the $8.99 members prime rib, 2 of the $7.99 Ham & 2 eggs and hash and $6.99 1 order of the sausage & eggs with hash -- food is all very good and completely exceeded my expectations given the lower prices. Eggs are all cooked right and all meat are moist. We asked for medium-rare for our prime rib and got medium-rare. The 1/4 lb of bone in ham with honey glaze was so moist! Even the toasts are cooked just right... lightly toasted to crisp with a thin spread of butter. Our waitress (Mandy-?) also checked on us every now and then to make sure we're doing ok. Throughout the entire dining time, she checked on us each time with a bright smile! We also noticed the consistent smile about other waitresses and servers... down to the cashier... and what a nice thing it is! Both of our dinner salads were not acceptable to leave the kitchen unless headed for the dumpster. Ice berg lettuce can be green, light green and even white. When it turns yellow with milky yellow edges, it is time to hand over to the pigs or in this case the dumpster racoons to enjoy......., not paying customers. The prime rib had no flavor and looked NOTHING like the photo in the lobby or on the billboard. It's a prototypical last-chance coffee shop at a last-chance I-80 Nevada Casino (Gold Ranch) and gas station (Sinclair)--or first-chance for eastbound motorists--a stone's throw from the California border. The Ranch House Ham & Eggs selected late one Thursday morning is pictured by fellow reviewers, and described in the menu, as a bone-in, half-pound ham steak. Mine was served cut into three sections away from the missing bone. Possibly aging more noticeably than I am aware, I do remain capable of cutting meat from the bone without aid. Having chosen home fries well-done instead of hashbrowns, the potatoes were little, crispy cubes the size of Sonic (nugget) ice, and devoid of any frills one might prefer in a side of home fries, like onions and herbs. Two eggs were faultlessly fried over/hard. Service was prompt and excellent. Two others' Sierra Cafe reviews mentioned the water tasting of chlorine, but it tasted fine on my visit, and coffee was satisfactory. What a relief! If you couldn't get fresh-tasting tap water at elevation 5000 in the Sierra, maybe the planet really has only 12 years left. read more

If Mel's Diner (TV sitcom not the chain restaurant) was in Reno it would be The Sierra Cafe. Zucchini sticks - tender zucchini with seasoned breadcrumbs lightly fried. You have a choice between marinara sauce and ranch. The waitress will tell you to select the ranch. I asked for both. Always listen to your waitress all You'll need is ranch. BLAST - Bacon, lettuce, and tomato with avocado -- not sure what the S stands for or if I'm just remembering what they called it wrong. It was a good sandwich. Onion Rings - I love it when an onion ring is actually a ring of onion not Minced onions. The batter had a perfect crunch. Yes, they were greasy. Onion rings are supposed to be greasy. They were not swimming in grease but they are also far from being health food. The service was friendly. Much of the waitstaff has been there for decades. I only got a roll of the eye when I asked for a lime with my Iced tea. I believe that was only an issue because he had to go to the main bar to get the lime. Used to frequently eat here before lockdowns. Food was always "home style" with fast service and the best wait personnel. Gave up going for breakfast after two extremely overcooked rubber omelettes. Thought I'd give it one more try as the hunger for a hamburger on the way home was undeniable. Ordered a mushroom burger with Swiss cheese, potato salad, ( "we're out) then onion rings ("we're out") OK I'll settle for the fries. Turned out to be cheddar cheese and the excessive season salt on the fries burned my mouth. And it only cost $20. Including a "service fee". Okay The Cafe is located inside the Gold Ranch Casino in Verdi (I-80 West, Exit 2), a small casino. Been wanting to try their food every time we head out to Reno but kept missing the exit. Finally caught the exit and it is a funky one that leads to the other side. Before the exit is their big billboard that says $2.99* breakfast and has a picture of a pancake and egg, hashbrown and bacon breakfast. That asterisk means *you have to sign up for their players card to get the deal. The menu showed a variety of meals for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Didn't really notice any $2.99 deals except for a bowl of fruit and bowl of oatmeal. They do have specials posted in front of the cafe. Today was the New York Steak special for $8.99. Came with choice of soup or salad, dinner roll, corn and choice of potatoes (mashed, baked, or french fries) or rice. I think this cafe is mostly catered for senior citizens who are either diabetic or has high blood pressure. The food was bland! My steak was overcooked and could not finish all (sad face). I suppose I could've gotten it fixed but we were pressed for time. The only thing I enjoyed eating was my baked potato and dinner roll. My hubby had the prime rib special (also $8.99). wow! the prime rib was huge but I noticed that he started to ask for more horseradish... the auju sauce had no taste, horseradish didn't help either. He started to pour hot sauce and a little salt to taste. Only then he was able to eat and finish his meal. The only thing that was right was our server and the service. I believe her name was Denise.
