I have had a previous good experience with Golz, however, this summer my car repair went terribly sour. My car overheated and wouldn't start, had it towed on June 15. I filled out the form with financial limit of $1000, left key and form in the overnight mailbox repair authorization. Said the car was ready Friday, I came to P/U Monday, car wasn't ready. Told to come back Tuesday, Tuesday waited 3 hours. The bill was $3843.70. I drove the car 68.2 miles and it overheated on June 30. When I called Jeff to have it towed in again he said we would 'work it out' the tow. He told me they needed at least two weeks before working on it. Since this was a 're-do' of previous repair, I believe the better business practice would be to schedule my job ahead of others. The second tow and repair involved hoses (which weren't needed the first repair), and a second anti freeze fill, and a thermostat housing etc.... again, which would not have been necessary had the first repair fully and properly fixed the overheating issue. I asked Jeff to have all the replaced parts saved. On July 29, I picked up the car (30 days in service the second time) asked for the parts and Jeff said Frank, the mechanic couldn't find the parts. This bill 527.17 and again no parts returned. No car for a total of 38 days. Jeff response "I don't break them, I fix them" - and "I won't be working on this car again" - and "I'm not paying for the tow". read more

Jeff and Glenn Golz are two brothers that will treat you like family from the minute you walk in. They have lived in the area their entire lives and repair cars for many friends and my extended family. If your car was born in Europe it deserves to be cared for by Golz. Okay, so they understand German engineering but they love all cars equally :-) Besides being friendly, the reason I have always trusted Golz is because vehicle safety is the primary focus of their work. Most auto service places do not let you into the work area. I'm sure Golz Motors is the same way. Some people have fancy vintage foreign cars...we just have old beat up foreign cars. But we still trust Golz with all our repairs. Jeff, Glen and Mike are fantastic to work with. As a female car owner, I cannot stand it when auto repair shops, auto dealerships, etc. treat me as a second class citizen. But this doesn't happen at Golz - I'm treated with respect and every potential repair is carefully explained with the cost/benefit of doing the repair. I wanted to love Gölz. I wanted my family's every out-of-warranty, European car to go to Gölz when it needed service. I wanted every shop to measure up to Gölz. ...and they screwed me. Tried to rack up an additional $1,000+ in repairs, actually. I worked with Jeff from the start but, when the car was finished, I got a "Good news, bad news" call from Mike. Seems like Jeff is an honest guy and a good mechanic but I can't say the same for everybody at Gölz. The good news: the car was finished and they fixed a tie rod. Bad news #1: The other tie rod "froze" when they were finishing up the work and they needed to replace it, too -- at my expense, and without notifying me before they did the work. Bad news #2: The rear differential was leaking and needed replacement. I said no to the rear diff. We're four years down the line now and the rear diff still operates fine without any additional service or fluid replacement. I must be clear that this all happened in 2008, but a tight economy is no excuse for screwing customers. The shop is big, it's clean, their parking lot is massive, and all of that adds up to high property costs. Just keep this in mind next time you're mechanic shopping, because the shop is going to pass those costs onto the customer one way or another. Sorry, Gölz. Best repair shop for German and exotic high performance machines. I would not take my car anywhere else. Are you tired of being ripped off by the dealership or some trickster mechanics I was so I was lucky to find Golz Motors. They never charge me for estimates and I always get an honest evaluation. I am very grateful for this place Jeff and Glen are very upstanding men who run a great business. They know everything there is to know about higher end European vehicles along with high performance Japanese cars. I even bring my car here for oil changes because I just don't trust anyone else. One of my favorite things about coming here is walking in the garage and seeing all the Porches and vintage Mercedes cars. I came in here because my car was overheating and I was left on the road with no one else to trust but Yelp. I called up Golz Motors because of the great reviews. Very professional and friendly staff, clean location - I will give it that. But, their dishonesty (or lack of inspection) made me write this review. They "fixed" the overheating of my car, but failed to let me know that the engine overheated and that my car was garbage. They did in fact tell me that they fixed the overheating problem and that I was good to go. Yes, good to go with an engine that will soon stop working. I've been going for almost 20 years. . .fixing cars is a tough business to run, and not everything always goes right the first time. That said, it has been an absolute pleasure dealing with them over the years on approx 5 cars of my own, and I know I've sent several friends there as repeat customers. I specifically know none of the people I've sent there have ever had a bad experience either, I follow up with them or vice versa. Jeff & Glenn are great, honest guys who I trust implicitly and the crew they employ over the years has always been a good one, in my experience. I can't say such things about too many places. I had a transmission go out on a car that was way out of warranty, they encouraged me to go to dealer and see what goodwill could be done, guess what the dealer ended up paying for the transmission (this would have been a $3-5k job @ Golz if I declined their suggestion to see if dealer could assist). So no, they're not just out to "get you" at Golz, far from it. They call you back when they say they will, your car will be ready when they say it will be ready. . .you want a perfectly nice clean waiting room, office, and beautiful shop area? Then this is the place. If you want a post-modern interior decorator to give your waiting room some style, free sandwiches and a stainless steel cappuccino machine in their lobby, stick with your dealer and their "friendly service and competitive prices." You can tell this is a place that loves cars, and also loves doing good work at fair prices. It's not like some places whose main goal is to sell you every possible thing they can think of and hustle you out like an assembly line and keep you poorly informed of how things are progressing. It's very nice to have a place I've counted on for coming up on 20 years that is so much unlike 95% of other mechanics. Want to drop it off early, pick it up late, have them drive you a few miles back to your office, wait in the lobby, borrow a loaner car? They rely too much on their computer systems and without their computers these mechanics don't know anything. I also dropped off a very clean car and picked up a trashed car, which I had to pay $50 to clean somewhere else. I paid them close to $1000, everyone seemed happy. The next week I hear my friend speaking about all the negative gossiping and low talking they were doing behind my back to my friend who told them he was the one referring me to them. This is just awful bad business. Do yourself a favor, keep your money in your pocket and your car on the road, take your car somewhere else. Golz has been the most honorable and knowledgeable group of professionals I have come across in the last 5 years. They are a family run business and have honest family values. My Volkswagen Jetta has recently needed some work done. Its 8 years old and I have been going to these guys for over a year now. I actually found Golz on yelp and was hooked after my first visit. Their prices are fair, they dont waste your time, and explain everything in depth so you can understand what work needs to be done. Most recently, my engine light came on. I expected it to be a costly repair out of my own pocket. It turns out my Catalytic Converter was shot and there was a chance it was still under warranty. They advised me to go to the dealership where I purchased my car and it would be replaced at no charge. We are talking about a $1400 part that they could of easily replaced and I would of had no idea that it could be covered at no cost to me. These guys are HONEST. They are truly good people and I wont take my car anywhere else. I drive 25 miles every time I need an oil change, because I know they will do a great job and I trust them. Its not often you find people that are so honest, let alone a mechanic! read more

Golz Motors not only gives excellent service but they are a good, honest, reliable shop and there is not a lot of turnaround with their mechanics. I am a firm believer you get what you pay for and if you want to go to Midas or Car-X, then the risk of problems later on down the road could arise from inexperienced mechanics. Golz's mechanics have the experience and knowledge that makes them top notch and if you take a look at the cars in their shop, everyone else thinks so, too. After spending thousands, my 97 jag is worse than when I brought it in. I bring it in had belts replaced,bearings in a wheel, and other things, now it's as loud as a tank and just vibrates horribly, take it back and the owner thinks it's doing great and blames it on it being 20 years old. Well hell a month ago before the third time I brought it in it sure didn't do what it does now. Good luck, my jag is never going back. It's been over a month, my car is at another garage, and it turns out the engine and trans mounts that golz replaced are aftermarket and put on wrong, left side on right and right on left, 700$.00 to fix this stupid mistake. Update; I go to them and told them about how it got fixed at Imperial motors on 41, I'm told by Jeff at Golz they imperial lies, and a month later no word and no refund from their fucked up work. Good luck bringing your car there. Final ending of story, they refuse to reemburse what it cost to get my car fixed and that's that. Fucked my car and stole my money. I bring my jag to imperial motors, they fixed it right away. To me gold sucks. You bring the car back twice and all they can say is it's a 20 year old car, so don't expect it to be perfect, Which I said it didn't do this before you changed the mounts. And their excuse for not giving me my 700 back is because another garage fixed it before they had a chance. Assholes period. Someone laughs at the review, probably them. I have done business with the brothers for a very long time. I have brought them multiple Porsches, BMW, V12 Mercedes Benz, Jaguar and a collector Aston Martin. They repeatedly have exceeded my expectations. Literally everything from simple tasks to the most encompassing total overhaul - have just proven to be effortless (For me!) OK....I'm a fan! I own a Jaguar Vanden Plas that went out of warranty last year and took it to GOLTZ to have a look see, after the dealer wanted to charge me an arm and a leg, that is to say over $1200.00 for a rear window actuater. Quote? I won't, ....suffice it to say it was well, WELL under the dealer's quote. For another problem KEN took care of it in minutes after the dealer wanted another fortune...the problem being just an adjustment as it turned out, and within seconds it was fixed. NO CHARGE. They could have said "That'll be $500 bucks and leave it for the day....but that's the way this family run business is run. That's why I'm a fan. So if you have a Beemer, an MB, AUDI or a JAG....forget the dealer and get it done here. Off the beatefn path [you have to look for it as it's off Lake Cook Road behind tall ofice buildings] ...but worth it!!! read more

I took my maserati there to get an F1 pump replaced after taking it to Fields Maserati in Winnetka (who wanted to charge me $7,000.00, -I don't think so guys), then taking it to the buffoons at Fields BMW/Maserati who wanted to charge me $4,000.00 in labor to take out the transmission to replace the F1 pump (YOU DO NOT HAVE TO TAKE OUT THE TRANS TO REPLACE AN F1 PUMP BOYS!!). Finally, a friend recommended Golz Motors, who diagnosed it right away, charged me a reasonable hourly rate, and didn't try to take me for a "ride" like the dealerships did. I was very pleased with my experience. You don't have to screw people to make money --its the exact opposite. A good mechanic is hard to find & so far so good with Golz. read more

After getting burned too many times taking the car into the dealer for repairs, we finally decided to switch things up and are glad we did. Golz was recommended to me by a random guy who stopped to help me when my car broke down. I didn't take it there at the time since I had no idea how this place would be and was in a pinch, but a few months later when my husband's car was having issues and the dealer's estimate was outlandish we decided to give it a go. What was great about this place? First, they looked at the car, told us what was wrong and gave us an estimate without charging us hundreds of dollars. Golz 1, dealer 0. Then they gave us a loaner without any argument, without booking it weeks in advance. Golz 2, dealer 0. When we called the dealer and detailed out the work we needed, their estimate was nearly a third higher. Golz 3, dealer 0. Given that score, we couldn't help but give them a try and are glad we did. My husband's car now seems to be running wonderfully and on top of all the repairs they did for him, he also mentioned a minor issue I was still having so they told him to bring my car by and ended up fixing it at no extra cost. We will definitely use this as our first stop in the future for any car repairs and would highly recommend Golz. read more

This is one of the best shops on the planet for a German car. I perform my own service on my two 12 year old BMWs and a 25 year old Mercedes. I have not been to a shop in 8 years except for tires and alignments. Personal demands sent me looking for a shop to perform a simple repair I was unwilling to make (especially in my freezing garage). I researched and talked with several shops. Golz Motors is super-knowledgeable, competent, honest and fair. Few shops know the German cars the way these guys do. They examined my whole car and found things I didn't even know were broken. Normally I don't like that but they were so spot-on that I was actually happy they found a couple problems. Although I took the car in for one repair they did such a great job of making it excellent that I let them fix a couple of other things they found and install parts I was going to install myself in the springtime. It is such a pleasure to have complete trust. Bad work, incompetence and dishonesty made me do my own work but Golz renewed my faith in independent repair shops.
