The one bartender was very nice but the place was packed so they really needed two. I was in the var area, not the official restaurant. The bar area is very small and the seating is kind of awkward. My old fashioned was very good (I uploaded a pic) but I never got refreshed. They were accommodating of a surprise birthday cake but there wasn't a very good place to put it due to the strange layout. I'd go again but only in a group of 2 or 3. Dined at Goodalls Kitchen for dinner with 8 other girlfriends. We were staying at an inn across the street and were looking for someplace within walking distance for our first night in Austin. Goodalls did not disappoint. Several gals had the bar's signature cocktails which were delightful. Several of us ordered a bottle of Sancerre to share - reasonably priced and just what we wanted. I can't recall of the different dinners we all ordered, but the daily fish special was outstanding (Texas redfish?). The chicken under brick and gnocchi both got rave reviews. Staff was attentive and patient with all 9 of us chiming in. read more

We visited Hotel Ella's Goodalls Kitchen for Afternoon Tea after taking in a musical on UT campus. Our party was moms and girls ages 6-10. The Goodall Wooten House is beautiful, of course, and relatively quiet at 3 pm on a Saturday when tea service begins. We did see a lovely bridal party having pictures around the property. On arrival the first things the girls noticed was the decor. The walls are covered in nudes (mostly nude butts), and they certainly served as a conversation topic for the youngest in our group... and to be honest, the young at heart, too. "Which is your favorite butt?" "That one has four inappropriate things together: it's a gun with a naked butt and boobies and a bird is about to peck the butt." I, personally, liked the butt art just fine and was impressed by the collection. There is also a large mounted head of an antlered animal above the fireplace, which resulted in a long conversation from the youngest about whether or not decapitated heads are nice art. It was all pretty standard fare for dining with young kids. We were waiting for a couple of our party for a few minutes, so I bring this all up only to say that the room itself has plenty to offer in terms of keeping you interested. They offer Zhi teas, which are really nice, but not super high end loose teas. Each guest had a pot of their choosing served alongside cream, lemon, sugar cubes, and honey. Our pots were promptly refilled as needed. For food, we were served a nice amount of sandwiches, scones, and goodies on a three tiered serving plate. The bottom tier was probably the favorite: curried chicken salad, herbed cream cheese and cucumber, and prosciutto on cheese roll sandwiches. The middle tier was a couple of different types of scones with butter and apple preserves -- quite tasty. And the top tier was filled with delicious macarons and truffles. They also offer sparkling wines during tea for an additional charge. All in all it was a great time. Service was very nice, and we didn't feel rushed in any way. I'm not sure they really aim to cater to groups with kids for their teas, but ours were very comfortable and found plenty to enjoy. I think it's great to have another option for afternoon tea in Austin other than the Four Seasons or the Driskill during the holidays. The pricing was pretty reasonable for tea at about $25 for adults and $15 for children. read more

Brought a girlfriend for lunch today and sat on the gorgeous veranda. Despite the days off and on wind, the porch was comfortable and spacious with speedy service. I had the pork sandwich and my friend had the club. Both were very generous portions and cooked perfectly. The fries were delicious and crispy with sea salt sprinkled on each. Least vegan-friendly place I've been to in Austin. In spite of the fine print saying "items marked with V can be made vegan," nothing was marked as such. No worries, I just asked the waitress to ask the chef if anything could be prepared for me -- I've found most upscale places have chefs who are happy to please all guests. The waitress never came back with an answer and only returned when serving the rest of the table with an overpriced bowl of fruit, some breakfast potatoes and a side of Tabasco for me. Pretty amazing that apparently even the mixed green salad offered on the menu would be too difficult to prepare without meat or cheese. The chef must be the least imaginative ever. It was embarrassing to be served this at a nice brunch celebrating the graduation of a wonderful young woman who was equally embarrassed to have chosen a place to dine that pretends to have vegan options but does not. read more

Took the boyfriend here for his birthday dinner and was not disappointed at all. I was a little concerned when we first arrived because sadly it was empty, minus 3 other tables (the bar was completely empty). All the staff were very friendly, the portions were very good and the price was on point. I will say that my boyfriend's chicken was a little over salted, but to be honest, it was still delicious. They were kind enough to give him a dessert (amazing chocolate/Nutella mousse) on the house, that I may or may not have taken a little more than my share of :). My mom, sister and I were excited to try afternoon tea during our girls' weekend in Austin. We made a reservation within the required 48 hour window and submitted the credit card authorization (which said to return at our earliest convenience) late the night before our 4 PM reservation. We arrived on time and the hostess immediately goes to get another girl to speak with us. The second girl tells us we need a reservation and when we tell her we have one, she awkwardly pauses and then makes up some shady story about not receiving our credit card authorization on time, needing 24 hours to prepare the chef (keep in mind this is tea with pastries and tea sandwiches) and says she's been trying to call us all morning and emailed us. We did not get an email other than the first one with the form and did not receive or miss one phone call from their number, and on top of that, had called from the cell phone they "had been trying to reach all morning" earlier in the day to ask about the dress code and nothing at all was mentioned about having been trying to call or an issue with our reservation. There was something very off about the whole situation and we not only felt like we had been lied to, but there was also no empathy or attempt to keep or reschedule our business. The tea room had maybe 3 tables seated, so it's not like they didn't have the space for us. read more

This review is regarding brunch. I went with my favorite brunch standard, the Eggs Benedict ($15). The one at Goodalls is very good: flavorful good quality ham, poached eggs, a creamy, citrus forward hollandaise and the "crowning glory", candied bacon (crispy, meaty bits and lightly glazed with brown sugar). You can add a bread and pastries basket for the table ($8). The coffee was good but comes in tiny cups that need refilling; fortunately our server was very attentive. I often enjoy a mimosa with brunch but passed here as they are pricey ($9). The atmosphere is upscale and contemporary, but Hotel Ella retains the mansion's historical charm with its lovely Greek-revival exterior, an intimate bar and lovely wrap-around veranda. read more

I thought this would be a place with some significance of Austin history, so I paid a visit with my kid. Unfortunately not only the food was insignificant, ordering a dish to share with my kid has resulted in an extra $3 potato side, which I didn't order, since I ordered a hash which already came with potatoes distracted me from suspecting it being an extra. Everything worked here. First, it's a beautiful space. It's classy and fresh, without feeling pretentious or stuffy. The service was perfect as well: attentive and intelligent. They worked hard to make you feel taken care of. My friend and I went for brunch. We had the deviled eggs and country pate to start, and then ordered the blueberry buckwheat pancakes and the poached eggs benedict with grit cakes (in lieu of the typical english muffin). Everything was killer and well-crafted, not to mention just flat-out pretty. After a mimosa, we went over the bar for a few cocktails that were pretty stellar as well. Would not recommend. Went for tea time and it's tea bag, basically one of those you can get it from walmart or heb. The snacks: they were not fresh at all. Not sure why you need 2 days reservation in advance because the macaroons taste like they're at least 1 week old. One of the "chicken salad" bite smells sour. The jam tasted like it's straight up from the jar. 25 bucks a person is way overpriced for this low quality experience. They had tea selections samples for you to see right when you get there, couple of them didn't have anything in the container. They don't pay attention to anything, pretty much just a scammy place. What I would pay for the tea time? None. I wouldn't go back even if they pay me. 1 extra star for the nice decoration on the walls and quiet atmosphere, so I'm being really generous for giving them a 2 star. read more

I had lunch with a group of five, 3 of whom ordered the burger. It was good, the bacon onion marmalade adding a nice flavor and the fries were the way I like them, crunchy outside softer inside. The carrot bisque I had was tasteful, could have used some crostini or croutons. But, the desserts, oh my stars. We shared one of everything and each was incredible. Love to be pleasantly surprised. First time. Picked the place because it suited our palates. Awesome atmosphere and surroundings. Snacks charcuterie and hummus perfect. Tomato peach soup delectable. Clams supposedly good but gone before I had a chance. Scallops THE BEST IVE EVER HAD, and honestly three were enough. Brick chicken fantastic--if someone can make chicken taste spectacular on its own they get credit for being a great chef. A few negatives--grilled bread is great but it was the same with charcuterie, clams and bone marrow (not much bone marrow--maybe an ounce for 10-12 bucks). Overall a great experience--once austin foodies move from e austin/Lamar/downtown in search of other places this will no longer be a secret. This is a super cool place, go there. read more

If it was possible to rate this restaurant with negative stars, I would do it. Right from the moment we walked in, little red head man server was ignorant and not very welcome. He proceeded to be short when asking for our order and not accommodating in any way. He brought a very dirty red wine stained glass to the table with our drink and didn't address it or apologize after we made a complaint. We Asked for a specific cook of steak and got a rare bloody steak. When I made a polite comment to the same server mentioned above, he didn't even look up at us and walked away without addressing my concern. He proceeded to come back to our table and tell us we were finicky customers from the beginning and rudely asked me why I would ask for a steak cooked the way I had requested it. After spending 3-4 minutes listening to him argue with us about how horrible of customers we were, we asked to speak to a manager. Manager came to our table and was slightly more pleasant, but very arrogant and unresponsive to his staffs service. When paying over $200 for a sub par meal, you would expect outstanding service and a great dining experience.....not at this place. Any out of towners visiting Austin, steer clear of this place! read more

Housed in the charming boutique 'Hotel Bella', Goodall's serves up an outstanding breakfast, lunch, and dinner selection (try the blackened carrot salad, and/or charred octopus). Not many people were in the restaurant when we were there; my guess is that with all of the crazy development going on in Austin right now (replete with a fast-growing restaurant culture), simply not a lot of people know about this true gem of a restaurant. Really very smitten with this little place. LOVE the decor, so the ambiance is top notch, if you care about such things! Our bartenders were incredibly friendly and helpful, with zero scorn if stupid questions came to light. Their old fashioned is really top notch - I might not be the BEST judge (i try, really!!!) but of all the many I've had in the past year, this one is solid right down to the luxardo cherries. But the unexpected star of the night was the tagliatelle... we had helped ourselves to the charcuterie tray, and my HH companion wasn't sated, and she wanted the pasta. And neither of us can recall ANY pasta dish that tops this tagliatelle, not in recent memory anyway! The oyster mushrooms were so delectable we didn't even recognize them as such at first... but I'm literally counting the days until I can go back and splurge on this dish again. Gimme gimme gimme. Here's hoping other food offerings come close to that tastiness! read more

PHENOMENAL meal here last night. I am staying at the hotel which i'm not loving but thats a whole other review, so i grudgingly figured since we were hungry and exhausted from a flight we might as well eat here. My bad attitude and i sat down and started ordering food, and i was just blown away by the quality and care put into each dish. We had the cauliflower which our waiter recommended and also explained how it was made, as well as a soup and fish for our main. Everything was absolute perfection. Gorgeously plated and expertly cooked. I was so impressed, my only disappointment was not having room for dessert. Our server Ben was fantastic, knowledgeable and friendly and wonderful with great recommendations and he even had the kitchen split our entree for us which was so lovely of them to do. It's amazing how overpriced this hotel is and underpriced this restaurant is. Certainly fine dining with perfect service, many props to the chef. I would give Goodall's five stars, except for the ambiance. Goodall's is in Hotel Ella, which used to be the Mansion on Judge's Hill before a major renovation. The old dining room was elegant: plush carpeting, heavy drapes, tasteful paintings on the walls, starched white tablecloths and napkins, plush Victorian chairs, and an elegant fireplace with a beautiful mantel. All of that is missing from Goodall's, which was disappointing. But the food is excellent, and the wine list seems to match the cuisine. We went to Goodall's for an Austin Restaurant Week outing, but the Restaurant Week offerings weren't to our taste, so we ordered from the regular menu, and we're glad we did. Appetizers, salads, and desserts were great across the board. A couple of glasses of Prosecco and a bottle of McPherson's Sangiovese (from the Texas High Plains) rounded out a great meal. And the service matched the food and wine. Our attentive (but not hovering) waiter passed the acid tests of proper service: (1) He properly presented our wine, and topped us off at just the right moments. (2)He waited until both of us were through with each course before removing our tableware. The bill was reasonable, given the quality of the food, wine, and service. I've often paid more in Austin for a less-than-satisfactory dining experience. Goodall's is high on my list of Austin restaurants. read more

If you are prepared to pay $100 per person, you will have an excellent meal and general experience here. The ambiance was very nice, and our table was waited on hand and foot. The quality of the food was impressive, though I wasn't head over heels for some of the individual dishes. There was an heirloom and melon salad with mole sauce and white cheese, which was probably the highlight of the meal, and unfortunately not on the menu. I hope they add it. There was also a fantastic peach cobbler to end the meal. I do not recommend the fried chicken. I'm just sayin. Proper eating and bone-in don't work, and fried chicken isn't fried chicken without the skin and bones. I tried it, and it was a disaster. It tasted good, but in a disastrous way. I'd actually like to give this review three stars, because fine dining just isn't really my thing. I do think that if you are looking for a comfortable fine dining experience, however, this is an excellent consideration. This is a great spot out of the downtown fray, but close in. The new ownership of what was formerly Judges Hill has transformed the space into an elegant and classy restaurant and bar. We ate in the dark and cozy bar area. Excellent cocktails, salads and appetizers. You can actually carry on a conversation without shouting. Beautiful, upscale and sophisticated. Parking can be difficult, but valet is available. read more

I've been to Goodall's for Lunch, Dinner and Cocktails. All were superb! Service was excellent. I particularly liked their burger at lunch, mac & cheese at dinner and every cocktail I've had their has been very good. They also have a very good selection of wine. The group I was with for dinner drinks a ton of wine and the sommelier had some choices they hadn't tried before which is very rare. Big thumbs up! read more
