There are lots of trees and gorgeous views of various mountain peaks. This is around 50-55 minutes from my house (or more depending on traffic). This is a county owned park, so you either need a larimer county park pass. Or there is a $9 fee you can pay upon entering if you dont have that. The park is well maintained. There are trash cans at the trail head. Also cared for bathrooms. There is more than kruger rock trail in the park. There is also saddleback and limber trail as well. Kruger is most well known and also tends to be the busiest. The trails are clearly marked and very user friendly. Dogs are allowed here BUT they need to be leashed ;) This is a really nice area to head to when you want to go into estes but dont necessarily want to deal with the crowds of rocky mountain national park. They do close for a few months in the winter. They actually just reopened i believe march 1 for the season so just be aware depending on the time of year you are wanting to go. Current trail conditions as of today were snowy and dry on parts. if you keep going past kruger onto the limber trail on the other side of kruger then you start getting into some deeper snow and snowshoes may be advised. We did about a mile that way and then opted to turn back around. Because the first 2.5 miles were not like that we had opted to not tow our snowshoes with us though we did pack them in the car.

It gains about 900 feet in elevation but never feels really strenuous. Last weekend there was snow on the trail, but it was well marked and easy to follow up to the top. When you make it to the end of trail, make sure to climb to the very top of the rocks. You have to do a little bit of scrambling to get there, but the views are so worth it! You get a fantastic look at Estes Park and Rocky Mountain National Park. The location is great, just a couple of miles away from Estes Park, which is a fun place to stop after you hike. Our group (plus 2 doggies) had a great morning hiking Kruger rock, and would definitely bring other friends and family to check it out.

Eagle Campground is more of a primitive trype camping to those expecting lots of frills and amenities. But this place is great! We camp above the dam and we had site E19 this time. A great site with lots of shade. Campground is electric only with a couple of water spigots here and there. Either fill up before you go or you can fill at the dump station a couple of miles away at the ranger station, where you get your pass. Interior roads are rough so go slow. Most sites are a bit unlevel, so bring your leveling blocks. The big draw is the lake! 3 miles long and 1 mile wide it's great for watersports. Ramps are right across from the campground and very convenient. Marina store is good, with a bit of everything.

Our campsite was level and spaced out enough so we weren't on top of one another. A few issues were that the pass machine at the southern entrance was out of order and all the signs in the campground said not to enter without a pass, under penalty of death. Well, we ignored that and set up, then grabbed our pass when we headed out of the north gate. Get your water before you go in. Also, not a lot (none?) trashcans in the campground area. Had to go to the central day use area to find a trash can. Would go again, but will have lower expectations next time.

Allow an hour. Purveyor of hiking, biking, camping, photo, and other random gear and supplies, along with local lore and digital photography knowledge, Mike will give you an earful on any subject you happen to stumble into, and also somehow segue into photography. He may also well give you stuff: my kids got a bag of paintballs to pitch at the road. My husband got a chunk of "that's no Kraft cheese" cut off the slab with a bucknife. I got a bamboo hiking towel, a lesson in bringing up shadow contrast using CS2, and a pile of excellent off-the-path hiking trail suggestions printed out on pocket-sized cards. Bathroom with shower, kitchen with stove and full refrigerator, no dishwasher, however in one of the bedrooms, there is a big beautiful washer, and a dryer on top of it. I would say there are 3 bedrooms, two bedrooms have Queen beds, then there is a small one with a twin bed. The couch is a Futon. Bring your own soap and Kleenex....Towels and sheets are there. I would give it 5 stars except it was not too clean, but what do you expect of a mountain cabin. The St. Vrain River runs right past the back patio, go fishing ! The entire place is For Sale. Dan is the Caretaker, ( his Dad owns the place )...Dan is really nice man, he loves his dogs and a cat, very well behaved animals. It MIGHT be haunted, I was awakened by someone whispering saying, " Nancy ! Nancy ! are you awake ? " The only other person in the house was asleep. I slept with the light on thereafter.

We stayed four nights at Stoney River Lodge over July 4 weekend (one night in Room #3 (Cowboy) and…read morethree nights in Room #4 (Eagle)). Both rooms were nice! The Cowboy is slightly larger and has a small kitchenette, but we liked the Eagle just fine. Both rooms were clean and nicely decorated. We were happy to find a reasonably priced, dog friendly place to stay. The Lodge is located right on the river in Big Thompson Canyon. The canyon drive made be intimidating to some, but we enjoyed the scenic views and we even got to see some big horn sheep frolicking on the cliffs above the canyon floor. The lodge is about a 25-30 minute drive to Rocky Mountain National Park. Our dog loved checking out the river in front of the lodge. She was surprisingly comfortable and seemed to enjoy her vacation too. The owners, Josh and Lori, even gave her a special treat bag when we checked in. Josh and Lori were friendly and gave good suggestions regarding things to do and restaurants in Estes Park and Loveland. Other guests seemed respectful and friendly adding to the family friendly nature of Stoney River Lodge. There is a small store where the lodge sells useful items (charcoal, s'mores kits, etc.) and guests can borrow games and books from the lodge's collection or play horseshoes or volleyball in the courtyard. Staying at the lodge made our last minute getaway to RMNP economical and convenient.

The home itself is beautifully decorated, with rich, dark woods in the comfortable dining area. Mark has created a very cozy and welcoming atmosphere for his guests. The surrounding yard is lovely as well, but we didn't have time to really enjoy that part of it. The Inn has unique rooms, and we decided to give the kitschy Egyptian room a try. It was maybe a little corny, but also fun! The double-wide bathtub was the highlight of the room for us! The breakfast - was outstanding. 3 courses, none of them too heavy, and a perfect end to our brief stay. Even dessert! We really enjoyed our stay, and the next time we come to Berthoud for an overnight? Berthoud Inn will be the first place we look! We want to try the other rooms, after all!

One thing I didnt like was the gym temperature was always set high. It was too hot in there. Not what you want when you are working out. They need to fix it. Front desk staff was always friendly. They also offer a laundry room. But you do have to pay to use the machines. There is small market by the front desk. A small indoor pool.
