Stop choking down all that other slop (ahem, la pasadita or las pasaditas aka the terrible triangle of diarrhea and vomit) and drive or pink yourselves to this place. The gorditas (front and center, in the spotlight, seriously grinding your tastebuds into a greasy horned up frenzy) are the best I've had in the area. By area I mean super close to Chicago because La Chiquita in Franklin Park narrowly beats this place. The tortillas are awesome. They have this awesome texture that only lard can bring and nothing will be the same for you afterward. That seriously lame vegetarian lard-free nonsense that you have after you leave will only serve to anger you. Coming here will be a lifestyle change and lard-free will no longer cut it in your beans or in your tortillas. So they have the standard fillings and such. Their strength doesn't lie in variety but in the glorious execution of each dish. Limited tools but each one satisfies. The horchata (pronounced WHORE-CHATA) is pretty good. I can't help but feel they discriminate. I order in english because I really don't speak spanish, and they over charge me. My mom orders in spanish, she's fluent, and her food comes out cheaper. I do love their gorditas I can see why they were voted Chicago's best, but I'm a big person on service and I've been to this place about 5 times and all give times I've had a bad experience with the service. Sometimes they've tried to fixed it when they messed up my order but just Friday I went with a group of friends they had bever been there I wanted them to try the food. But it's was so hard to concentrate in the food when the waiter and the cashier wear awful, the waiter had an obvious problem treating us with a friendly smile or patience when my friend decided what to order. Today I ordered the Gordita de chicharron with green salsa but the chicharron had no flavor. I couldn't taste the green salsa and tried to add salt so it could taste better but I gave up and left it. So I started on my carne asada gordita but the gordita was hard and ultimately I gave up and just drank my delicious coke. read more

My coworker, Chris, and I like to take a mental break from work every day, especially when the weather is nice. Last Friday, despite trying to stick to my healthy diet of delicious Lean Cuisine and Healthy Choice meals (Mmmmmm, I say sarcastically!) he convinced me to take a walk down the street to Aguas Calientes. My other coworkers have been talking about this place for months, bragging about the delicious gorditas and other items they have been enjoying. So, it was a nice little walk down glamorous Cicero Ave (I say again sarcastically) and we decided to give it a try! I ordered a cactus gordita (gordita de nopales) and he ordered a steak burrito and steak taco. His burrito was so big for the $4 price that he couldn't even finish it and had to take the taco to go! It wasn't "football" sized like other places but it was a pretty decent size for one person. I enjoyed my cactus overall, but felt it was a little too sour for my liking. I think they marinate it with vinegar to give it a little "kick". A dab of sour cream helped balance out the puckery flavor. I may try the rajas (peppers) next time, thinking they might have a more plain flavor. It's a very bright and spacious place (lots of natural day light) which I didn't expect since it seemed like it would be small from the outside. OhhhhK! For starters, I didn't get a gordita. I got a steak torta. It could have been better without the burnt pieces of steak. I'm thinking that they have a pile of meat on the griddle and it is just constantly cooking and you get some hard pieces. The rice reminds me of my grandmas rice, garlic taste. My husband got menudo with a patita but they brought the patita separate which was weird (probably costs extra.) it was ok...I still love my Indio on Cermak but they are closed on Sunday. read more

Cheap and delicious. I am vegetarian, so I had to ask if the beans were made with lard and they are. However this did not hinder my gordita experience. I got a cheese and avocado gordita and it was amazing. They have salsa on the tables including pickled jalapenos that added to the deliciousness of the gordita. My gordita was very affordable too! I checked this place out since they are know for their gorditas. These are some serious sized gorditas, packed with ingredients. The taste is good but nothing that is worth any hype. They sell liquor which is a little unexpected for a restaurant like this but who is going to complain. Tons of parking next to the location or across the street. Súper disrespectful place & disgusting dine in ! I came with my sisters go grab some quick food and I found a hair in my gordita half way done with it. When we called a waitress over, whom hadn't even tended to us since we received our food, all she did was look at us and grab my plate. We then waited for about 20 minutes until we finally got up and went to pay. The lady charging us was no help either and was RUDE !!!! We explained the situation and told her it wasn't too much the food that angered us but much rather the service and she still just ignored us and went to charge us. I was craving DF style tacos since i was homesick for Los Angeles. We were waiting for a flight out of Midway and had time to go up the street for a quick meal, so we decided on Taqueria Aguascalientes. We had tacos al pastor, tacos de barbacoa, tacos de carne asada, a gordita doña Cuca, and a gordita de carne asada con frijoles y queso. The tacos de carne asada y al pastor were absolutely delicious! All with handmade corn tortillas that were fresh and perfect. The gorditas were so-so, good but not spectacular. I had the horchata. It was creamy, sweet and wonderful. It seemed to have evaporated milk in it. The prices are good, service is prompt. I'd definitely return if I'm in the area. read more

3 stars: A-OK Nothing wrong with the food here. We had a little family outing and ordered pretty much every gordita on the menu. These are the ones that made it to my side of the table: Al pastor = ok (i've had better) Dona Cuca = ok (the buche was better than the carnitas) Hongo = ok (it's a mushroom. kind of hard to screw this one up) Nopalitos = ok (kind of spicy) We also had some of the hand made tortilla tacos. I preferred the taco de guisada over the gorditas simply because the gorditas get kind of soggy. The flavors are ok, but nothing mind blowing. The horchata was really good. The jamaica was on the tart side, and not as floral as I'd have preferred. Seems like a good place to come grab a taco and some cheap beers. They serve Indio in bottles, which is sometimes hard to find, so that's a plus. Otherwise, pretty average Mexican food in a city that has great Mexican food. Nothing remarkable. Just good food at fair prices with good service. Make sure you try the zanahorias. It's that clear plastic container with carrots, jalapenos and cauliflower. Kind of like a zesty Mexican giardiniera. This place is good for handmade gorditas and tortillas. But it got wondering since I been coming here each week I see that they have to fire and hire new people each week. It got me wondering why. And the food tastes different each week and the meat is not from normal meat is from a factory meat. I went in the other day, and I have to say I was greatly disappointed in the service and food of this place. We went in, as a party of 6, and we got seated immediately, my mom is disabled and in a wheelchair, so I'm pretty sure that's the only reason they attended us so quickly. The server who took our order for drinks, somehow messed up what we ordered and brought us 2 extra drinks. (Which they charged us for, despite the fact we didn't drink them or order them!) Then we ordered our food, from tacos, to gorditas, to caldos. They all came out at different times, and it wasn't even small intervals, but up to 10 minutes! The tacos were okay, not great, and the gordita I had (rajas con queso), wasn't even completely stuffed. Additionally, they served the caldo with some small hard pieces of bread, instead of tortilla. Which seems so odd for an authentic mexican place.. we had to order tortillas separately and they took extremely long to come out. In the end we got tired of waiting and just took the food to go. Growing up on 27th and Spaulding i went here alot and this is my favorite mexican restaurant of them all. I just think its better than the rest of them. Im trying to give the most non bias opinion. The food really is not that expensive. Some items are but those will be the specialty items. I always get a Gordita with steak beans and cheese. they are not stingy with steak beans or cheese. i will admit the food is a bit greasy but then again if it was too greasy i would not eat it. and i also get a steak taco with cilantro and onion. The gorditas are the best in Chicago. You see a group of women in the back all slapping away at the dough making fresh gorditas. My husband and I run down there every chance we get. Our favorites are by far the Gorditas de carne al pastor and the gordita de carnitas con chile verde. It's great Mexican comfort food. I also really like their menudo. I like the fact that they give you hand made tortillas with it. I have taken all my friends to this spot and everyone has loved it! I wish they had a location on the North Side. My only gripe with this place are the restrooms. I really wish they were better kept and stocked with t.p. and paper towels. Use the bathroom at home before you go! read more
