Not what I was expecting... I stopped in last week when I was visiting a friend from Houston and was a little disappointed. I ordered a burrito with al pastor meat to hold me over as I was driving back to Austin late at night and didn't want to make any stops for food on the highway. It was great that the spot was open late (I believe they were closing at 4am that particular night) and it definitely has that mom/ pop authentic feel, but I was not a fan of the food or service. I was pleasantly greeted by a waitress when I came in that was friendly and helped me pick a menu item, but I wish she would have checked on me a bit more after the food arrived. I settled on ordering a burrito with pork. The meat was mostly burnt so I took most of it home with me but didn't finish it. Although my experience wasn't what I would have wanted it to be, it looked like most of the other people eating around me enjoyed their meals so it might be worth giving another try. Unfortunately, for now I'd give this place a 7/10 for the overall experience and wouldn't recommend it. read more

This is my second time coming here and I would have to say their gorditas are the best homemade just like it should be. Their sauces are outstanding little bit of spice I love their chips that are lightweight. However I can't give it 5 Stars I ordered the queso flameado and the cheese was not that good and the chorizo was real dry. It was a lot of oil in the cheese. The service was friendly and they make sure we had refills. The place was clean and well-kept. However my gordita the meat also had a lot of oil in it too making the gordita a little soggy. Cheap place, great authentic food! Have came here since I was a child, the owner regularly walks around as if he was just another employee checking on guest. Extremely humble person. My fave plate are the chiles rellenos, sopes, and flautas. Theres nothing better than a cold night with a warm mug of champurrado. This place is lively, warm and dinky. Never fails i will always pick the corner booth in the first room. Love the place, will never let it go. My only complaint is the salsa, it used to be so great! So glad we stumbled upon this little gem one evening! Ever since we have visited again and again. The food is reasonably priced and authentic. The staff are always courteous. The atmosphere is as any you would expect in a family owned Mexican restaurant, Spanish music playing, loud conversations and good food. Parking is a little difficult because it's usually a full house. My husband picked up gorditas for us to have for breakfast this am. Granted, gorditas can steam when packed warm, but these fell apart completely. The chicharrón was pretty ok, rajas con queso weren't flavorful, nopales lacked salt/seasoning, and the salsas were ok. Overall - meh. I don't think I'll be back to give them another shot anytime soon. read more

I really love this place. I used to come here with my mom and grandmother on weekends. There is always a steady stream of people coming and going which means the tiny parking lot can get crowded. It's definitely worth it. Authentic gorditas, tacos, tortas, sopes, and huaraches. You know you are eating Mexican food when the cheese they use on dishes is queso fresco and not melted cheese. But if Tex -Mex melty cheese is what you favor, then I'm sure they can accommodate you. They have many other dishes besides the signature gorditas and tacos (which by the way, are made with freshly made tortillas). I've lived in Northside Village all my life, and it's just dawned on me that I haven't even begun to explore the venues in this neglected part of town. For a friends going away get together, we ended up here because it's open until 2 in the morning, like Arandas down the street. For Mexican food lovers, I would say Irvington is a great place to find authentic dishes that aren't overpriced. The Irvington strip is really a gem that many Houston foodies haven't discovered yet, as most of Houston's big Mexican food chains got their start here, probably because it's been a predominantly Latino neighborhood for the past thirty years or so... Anyway, what I liked about Aguascalientes was that it had a lot of stuff that isn't on ordinary Mexican food menus. For example, I ordered a mushroom gordita, which was excellent. I looked down the list, and they also have mushroom tacos and mushroom quesadillas. Not too many other places have mushroom-based options, so it's nice to have a little variety. Unfortunately, that's all I had, but I look forward to going there for lunch and dinner. read more

As soon as I sat down, the red tomato based salsa for the chips was old so I sent it back and it was not replaced. Smelly people off the street selling cheese, are encouraged to solicit diners for money. The restaurant was hot with everybody fanning themselves as if they didn't have the AC on. I never knew who my real waiter or waitress was because I was served by four different people and the service was pretty terrible. The parking was limited so we had to cross the street. The interior resembles the home of your Grandmother whom has a knack for collecting gaudy trinkets, colorful tablecloths and framing photos of Emiliano Zapata and Pancho Villa as if there were blood relatives. I just walked out of this restaurant, paid for my drinks because that's the only thing that they brought to us. Really authentic food. Everything I've had is delicious. The posole, a soup with pork and hominy is tasty. I prefer the sopes over the gorditas because they come with Mexican cheese and sour cream. I recently had the red chile chicken enchiladas and the plate was plentiful and delicious. They also have fresh squeezed juices.
