I have a full head of hair with body (the hair, not my gut) that I like just above my collar, blowing in the wind as I cruise with the top down. I need someone who can sculpt and tame this mess but keep it natural. If they can carry a conversation, that's a bonus. And here's where Lizzie comes in. Based solely on Yelp reviews, I went online and made an appointment for a less than a week out (big bonus for me as I don't like to plan more than a week out) and she accepted our date. Cool I book this online and receive txt reminders but can I turn that off? Got a little annoying. Find the place is a trick. As the site reads, it's around the corner and if you hit house, you've gone a step too far. Once in, I felt at home. The clean and sparsely decorated space is comfortable with everything you need and nothing you don't. A TV, Pandora and a bar. I opted for fizzy water but a Manhattan was on my mind. It was easy. Conversation started over a neck rub a cut, hot foam and straight razor neck shave then a wash. We discussed her life, my life and hair. I thoroughly enjoyed my time. Luckily, one of my close friends put me on Richie's and I haven't looked back since. Richie's Barbershop truly goes above and beyond to give amazing cuts and their customer service is top tier. Everyone in the shop is friendly and makes sure whenever you walk in that you feel at home. My Barber Mariay is simply the best to do it! I never have to worry about my hair when I am getting a cut from her and she is always checking in throughout my time there. She gives fantastic cuts, always listens to clients and even ends with a massage gun after the cut...you really can't beat that! I always get a close fade with a trim on the top, a clean line up by a razor blade and she has me on my way feeling like a new person. I've been going to the same barber for almost two decades, so I'm extremely picky and hesitant when it comes to haircuts. But since this spot was within walking distance, I decided to give it a shot. From the moment I walked in, Chino made me feel welcomed. He asked all the right questions, and it honestly felt like I'd been coming there for years. The atmosphere in the shop is great, too. Most importantly, I love my haircut. I've been told by other barbers that my hair is difficult to work with because of the texture and the couple of hair swirls on the sides that make fading and styling tricky. Not for Chino. I am not loyal to any one shop in town, I really like them all and I'm a poor planner when it comes to routines like haircuts and personal appointments, I am the guy who ducks into any door with a barber pole next to it. When I first walked into Goleta Barbers, I paused. As I observed the shop and customers, my reading is that this is a safe, "third place" for men-of-color. A haven free from racist BS. I am an old white guy and I immediately felt like I might be considered as an outsider--maybe even unwelcome. [side note: If you don't believe that racist BS exists in our beautiful area, I have a few books for you to read and we'll discuss. We all have work to do.] Now, after being offered a seat and getting a great haircut, I can say that I am either very welcome at Goleta Barbers, or the professionals are great at pretending to like me. Both Pete and Al are great at their work and just an absolute pleasure to talk with. Two places that make me feel like I am living in the present and also the distant past: A chair at Goleta Barbers and in front of the beautifully carved wood bar at Pepe's.
