Fish Taco Wabo food truck was parked outside of the SAP Center yesterday & today. I happened to be walking by the SAP Center yesterday afternoon right after I grabbed a salad at Whole Foods so I wasn't hungry. I went over to investigate and found Fish Taco Wabo Truck. I was talking to Lulu the owner and she offered me a fish taco so who am I to say no. She gave me a fried fish taco w/shredded cabinet w/sauce & also gave me a few pieces of calamari. I offered to pay her, but she wouldn't take my money. Muchas gracias Lulu I told her that I would be back the next day because we would be at the SAP center w/14,000 of my closest friends. Full disclosure: I don't like fried fish. People try to feed me fish and chips all the time and every time I come out of the experience thinking, "what could people possible be tasting in this dish that I'm missing?" When I ate a fish taco from here, I think I understood. The breading on the fish was light and just the right amount of crunchy, and the fish inside was fresh and gloriously soft. Combine that with the explosion of flavor that arrives as you finish biting down, and you've got yourself the best fish taco in the Bay. I imagine this is what every fish and chips fan dreams of eating. I'm a huge meat-eater, and I actually like the fish taco better than the meat tacos (I got the carne asada, it's less flavorful). It's a little too spicy for my low spice tolerance, but probably perfect for anyone with a regular spice tolerance. Also, the portions are extremely generous for the price (3 tacos for $10, I think). Fish Taco Wabo has the fluffiest, tastiest, crispiest fried fish I have LITERALLY ever had. It legitimately confuses me. I'm talking about out of all the fried fish I've ever had - fish and chips, tacos, bowls, stir-fried, a la carte, or otherwise - Fish Taco Wabo blows everything else out of the water. What's more is that each taco contains a BIG piece of fried fish. Like, if you got fish and chips anywhere else, it's the size of a large 1 piece of cod - except it's in a $3 taco instead of a $15+ bed of fries. And again, the quality of the fried fish is far and beyond anything else I've had, so I don't understand how or why it makes sense, but gosh darnit the fish taco wabo's fish taco is delicious. I have gone to food truck events around the state and this is upper tier. A bit on the pricey side, at 10 dollars for 3 tacos but compared to many food trucks, it's both cheaper and more delicious. You'll be hard pressed to find another fish taco truck of this quality. I recommend the seafood tacos and trying all three. The fish is lightly fried and is absolutely delicious. The calamari has a crispy fry and the shrimp are pretty good too. All of them have a fresh cabbage topping with the perfect crunch to add to the dish. After asking them what their most popular tacos were, they suggested the seafood options and we decided to go with their fried shrimp, calamari, and fish tacos. The tacos are deliciously simple and made to order. Three tacos will satisfy most, as they are of decent size. The owners of the truck are really nice, family run, and care about their customers. While working with them on our wedding, they were very accommodating and provided an amazing experience and food for our guests. I've been spoiled with my tacos since coming out here, but this truck takes it up a notch. Now they do have the regular taco fillings - carne asada, pork, chicken, chorizo. I had the chorizo one as I love chorizo, but if you are coming to a "fish" taco truck, still with the seafood. I am a big fan of fish tacos, so I had to get one. Most of the ones I have had in the past are small fried pieces of fish. This time, it was one huge fried fish "finger" that was cooked perfectly and covered in a great sauce. It was so big it was coming out of both sides of the tortilla, and as a single piece, this was the least messy taco I had. But the highlight was the calamari taco. Perfectly fried squid filled this taco. There was sauce and salsa, but the great calamari really stood out. If given a chance I would get more of just the calamari and I'm not alone - as I was leaving another patron saw the calamari and was thrilled. So here's a funny story. When I was small I was sitting next to a pond and a fish jumped out a scared me. I was just a toddler. Since that day, according to my mother I would always hate seafood and fish. To this day I still don't eat it. That all changed the day I took a bite of myshrimp shack's spicy shrimp! After 40 years I started my first live of a sea food, shrimp. Emboldened I tried another seafood food truck, the Fish Taco Wabo truck! Holy moly!! What have I been missing out all these years. I was at a Dias de Los Muertos event and this truck happened to be one of the trucks that was at the event. Up to this point I had not had fish tacos in a very long time, what drew me to this truck was the smell it was so intoxicating and delicious I had try it, so I ended up getting two fish tacos and also a shrimp taco. My goodness...it was so good. Probably the best fish tacos I had since my time in Mexico so many years ago. The fish was cooked and fried perfectly and the breaded coating was just so consistent and excellent. The shrimp taco was also bomb because of the type of shrimp that they used. I can't say enough great things about Fish Taco Wabo! I had eaten Fish Taco Wabo at Rivermark's Wednesday Playdates over the summer and reached out to them for a last-minute birthday party for my daughter this past weekend. Hector was incredibly accommodating for the party which was taking place just two short days later, even allowing me to create a custom menu. On the day of the party, Hector arrived 15 minutes before the party start time to ensure everything was set up to our liking. The staff was professional, friendly and fun! All of our guests from carnivores to vegetarians to the toddlers LOVED the food. My daughter especially loved the cheese fries! They ensured all of guests were well fed and taken care of before driving off to their next adventure of the day. This is just a damn fine niche player. Stick to what they're good at and you'll never be disappointed. They're called "Fish Taco Wabo" and, true to form, their best dish is a lightly fried fish taco. The fish is flavorful, fresh, high quality, and the surrounding sauces and vegetation do their part as well. The end result is a 9/10 fish taco. The shrimp & calamari tacos have their place as well, though neither dethrone the fish taco as the main attraction. This is more of a testament to the fish option, rather than a detraction from the alternative seafood options. For what it's worth: I enjoyed the shrimp tacos thoroughly, but felt the calamari were just okay. Last time, however, I made the mistake of trying a non-seafood dish and came away with the most flavorless asada tacos I've ever had. For a truck centered around seafood, it's a bit ironic for a dish to taste like it's lacking salt - which was the main gripe I had with the asada. No real direction to it - wasn't spicy or sweet or savory... just bland, with the dominant flavor coming from the corn tortilla (which speaks volumes about the asada, as well as the salsa roja). The moral of the story: when this drives up to your work, go grab yourself 2 or 3 fish tacos and enjoy. Anything else and you're flirting with disappointment. read more
