Upon arrival, we were informed that the prime rib was only available during Father's Day weekend. It would have been nice if that little detail had been mentioned in the post that inspired the trip. Since we were already there and starving, we decided to stay. Mistake #1. The medium rare top sirloin arrived looking like it had lost a fight with a blowtorch. It was so overcooked and rubbery that we couldn't finish it. We brought the leftovers home thinking at least our dog would enjoy it. She sniffed it and walked away. For anyone who has ever owned a dog, you understand how impressive that is. The meatloaf somehow managed to transport me back to my hospital room after my appendectomy. If you've ever wondered what institutional cafeteria food tastes like with a side of disappointment, order the meatloaf. The coleslaw appeared to be made from aging cabbage with visible brown and pink bruising throughout. To save myself a trip to urgent care, I passed on trying it. The mashed potatoes were the only thing that showed signs of life, but the gravy was so salty it could probably preserve a mummy and contained the dried skin that forms when gravy sits out too long. Even the lemon slices in our water glasses were slimy. At this point, I have to question whether @laoc.eats actually eats at the places being promoted or just photographs them. After they took my order waited for 15 minutes before I was told an item wasn't available. Asked if I wanted to swap it for something else which I didnt we specifically came for that item and ordered 3 of them. Asked for a refund and the girl said she would have to figure out how to do that. So after about 40 minutes total no food finally got the refund. No apology for wasted time. I really love the banana pudding but last time I went there was a hair in my gourmet mess and also the drink glasses weren't clean. Last time I went I didn't want to say anything about the hair because I was halfway done with my food and I already mentioned the glass. I ordered the California Benedict ($19.50) and my husband got the Pancake Breakfast ($17.95). My fruit bowl was very nice with a variety of nicely cut fruit, even some kiwi and banana which is rare in a fruit bowl. I read several reviews both good and bad about Gourmet Pie & Cafe but my Mom really likes this establishment so we decided to come and give it a try ourselves. Thankfully we decided to try because the food was delicious, service was excellent provided by Jose, and the portion size pretty large. Prices are fair and not overly expensive compared to other nearby breakfast restaurants so this was a definite win win. Parking may be a little tight but it seemed to open up pretty quickly. The burrito was nearly $20 it was filling and flavor was good tomatillos green sauce. I did ask for corn chips hope to have a crunch with the burrito to balance texture but they don't have that on the menu. Next on order was a tri tip salad with a creamy something dressing. Salad was great the dressing was very tart. Again our server (super attentive )even asked cooked style for beef. We saved room for dessert. I walked up to see the window of desserts just to see what caught my eye. I asked an employee if all were baked in house he said yes. I asked about all the cakes and jam he said yes. I went back to our table and as I was asked from our server what type of dessert would I like, I picked coconut cake. To only find out cake isn't always available.(Kinda thought maybe the server I asked about the baked goods would have told me? Like yes all in house baked however we do not carry cake at all times, or we don't have any today sorry?) So I ended up choosing a peach crumble. Super dissatisfied there was a uncooked visual of the pie crust where filling was stuffed. I asked the server she said let me ask and came back with that's the cream part that's added. Hmm? It was really busy and we had to squeeze 4 people into a tiny booth, but the food was really good. I got the banana pecan pancake and thought it was really good. We went around 11am so my husband got the pozole and it came in a huge bowl and was very tasty. When we came back for lunch several months later, I was not as impressed. I got a french dip sandwich and my husband got the fish and chips. His came with a ton of fish and fries but the fish was only so so. My sandwich was also kinda bland, definitely nothing to write home about. I think the worst part about our last visit was that our waitress was basically non-existent. I guess it was busy so we were sat in the bar area, which was fine. Maybe they were short staffed, not busy, but we had to flag her down if we wanted anything, and it took a really long time to get our food from the kitchen. Ok where do I start. We came here on mother's Day, because a lot of restaurants in the area had long wait times. I've been here years ago and suggested this to my family. She stated my mother's selection of butter corn was fine, but we had to select between mixed vegetables, broccoli, or spinach. I stated I don't like broccoli, and selected spinach. My wife selected the mixed vegetables. Once the food came out. My mom who selected buttered corn. Was told by the server that corn was not available so they auto selected mixed vegetables for her. Now let's get down to the food. The gravy for the country fried steak still had a strong flour taste (like they quickly whipped up some gravy without letting the flour mix properly in the gravy. The spinach was bland as if the quickly blanched it without seasoning anything. The food was so subpar non of us finished anything. I would not recommend this place. They obviously did not prepare for mother's Day crowds and demand. We did not appreciate the auto substitution and just are what we could. I will not revisit this establishment again. We ate here today on January 1, 2026, and interestingly enough, we were also here exactly one year ago, which makes the comparison impossible to ignore. The food quality is decent--no real complaints there. Everything tasted fine, was prepared properly, and came out as expected. This place does what it does reasonably well. That said, the pricing has gotten out of control. Last year, I specifically mentioned in my Yelp review that prices felt high. At that time, the BLT was $15. Fast forward exactly one year, and that same BLT is now $18--same sandwich, same portion, same experience. I will note that the onion rings are very good. I understand inflation is real and prices are up everywhere, but this kind of jump for the exact same meal really negatively impacts the overall dining experience. It starts to feel less like paying for quality and more like being taken advantage of. I gave this place 3 stars but they really should get about a 2.8 but Yelp doesn't give that option. We have been visiting this restaurant for many years even before they moved to katella. Since ownership changed a while back servers have changed frequently and now the menu has changed too. I will not be back. Some of my favorite items like almond encrusted cod, uncle Tony's spaghetti with chili, and country fried steak are no longer offered. Seems like ownership doesn't care about the long time customers at all. Its not just me sitting in waiting area I heard the same comments. Looks like business has definitely dropped off, no daily specials or lite menu either. As I said, I will not go back and thats a shame. Came in on a Saturday around noon. They have their own lot so parking was easy. We were sat immediately and the waitress was very attentive, along with the gentleman refilling the coffee. Sandwich was a bit greasy, but it was typical diner food so didn't mind! French toast was great! I bought a pie to go, warmed it up, and it was amazing! read more
