I was staying near the vicinity of Pasty Kitchen and figured I'd give it a shot. I love pot pies - which is what this place reminded me of! This is a little hole in the wall - standing room only - when you walk into the tiny store fronting Katella Ave, you run right into the ordering counter and a few freezers. There's no seating inside, but there is a few tables outside. Parking in the back. First - they have the friendliest staff and even better - the friendliest customers! It was my first time, so I allowed a couple of people to go in front of me while I browsed their menu/flavors. I asked the people in front of me what flavors they order - and they shared their favorites - one regular told me she recommends getting a side of gravy - which adds a layer of richness to your meat pie - serving as a dip. Seeing how friendly their regulars were proved to me that this is a great place - they've been around for awhile now! These meat pies are huge. 1-2 is enough for a meal - the filling is plentiful - and the dough is crusty and yummy - just like a pot pie. I got one of each: Chicken pasty, Beef pasty, and their special - Corned Beef pasty, a small side of turkey gravy, and a side of mac salad. Total was a little over $20 including tip. Had the chicken and beef pasty and a bit of the mac salad for lunch, saved the corned beef pasty for midday snack. The crust was amazing! And served to complement the rich fillings. Everything tasted fresh - no issues with dryness or anything. There's a small offering of dessert as well, but I stuck to the meat pies and mac salad. read more

This place is tiny. Counter service only. Three pasty flavors: Beef, chicken and vegetable. Two sizes: small and large. You buy gravy on the side, chicken or beef flavor, also small or large. They have terrific fruit turnovers, apple and cherry flavors. They now offer other side items. You can buy them frozen and bake them at home, too. All flavors are great. Came here to try out chicken pasties after driving past the business every time I head to Costco. Inside is small, strictly for ordering and maybe waiting for your order. Driven by Pasty quite a few times and always said we would stop. Finally made it and I'm glad we did. Pasty offers meat pies, turnovers, cookies and a few desserts. So, on our first visit, 1 meat pie, 2 chicken, beef/chicken gravy and 1 of each turnover flavor (cherry, apple and peach). Pies come out piping hot, so be careful. Beef pie meaty with diced potatoes wrapped in a golden brown wrap. Good by itself, but better with gravy! I'm a gravy sauce kind of person. Chicken pie with carrots, onions and celery. With gravy, a dip able hand held pot pie. Best thing is, if you can't finish, they won't be soggy later and a quick warm up in a hot pan or toaster oven and you're ready to go. Turnovers, each filled with fruit and icing on top. Looks like a Hostess pie, but 10x better. Not overly sweet with a crispy crust. Probably best when consumed hot. Scoop of vanilla ice cream probably wouldn't hurt either. Overall, I'd say a must try for people who enjoy pies. On our return trip, we will try some different pies and sweets. read more

First time here it is a nice little place at a corner parking in the back is easy for a small vehicle. I stopped by Pasty Pantry around 11:45 a.m. on a Tuesday, and the place was quiet. It is a true pickup only spot. You walk in, order at the counter, and head right back out. Parking is easy with a 24 minute green zone out front and a little parking in the back. I ordered a large beef pasty with a large gravy and a peach turnover. The gravy was the highlight for me. Rich, flavorful, and the part of the meal I would actually recommend. The pasty itself was basic. Not bad, just very straightforward. Same with the peach turnover. It was sweet, but it was missing the warm spices that usually give it a little depth. Overall the food felt more on the plain side, which could be perfect for someone with a simpler palate or someone who likes kid friendly seasoning. Service was quick and friendly, and the spot is convenient if you need something warm in a hurry. For me, it was a one time visit. Full disclosure, I am only reviewing dessert not the meat pies. We already had lunch so we were just looking for a way to cap off a meal. Banana Pudding (4/5 - good flavor but needs more banana in it). Peach Turnover (3.5/5 - nice peaches). Cherry Turnover (3/5 - good texture but lacking cherry flavor). Apple Turnover (1/5 - spiced apple is not for me). Peanut Butter Cookie (4/5 - soft and good texture in the middle with a nice crunch on the edges). The turnovers would be much better if they were hot (or at least warm). I'm going to try our leftovers tonight, heat them up and add some ice cream. Maybe you need to heat them. If so, they should have recommended it. Service was just ok and they forgot one of my items so we had to go back. I'm being generous with 4/5 but I want to come back for the meat pies. read more

While at a basketball tournament in Cerritos with my daughter time aloud for me to drive 5 miles south and go down memory lane. In the past, it was only beef and chicken and maybe turkey, today they offered chorizo as well as sausage and pepper. I opted for the sausage and pepper and boy was I treated. It was delicious . I had driven past The Pasty Kitchen for years without ever stopping. Honestly, I wasn't even sure what a pasty was. Every time I saw the sign, I figured it was either a typo or some food I'd somehow made it through life without encountering. One day curiosity finally got the better of me, so I stopped in to investigate. As it turns out, a pasty is basically a handheld meat pie, originally from Cornwall, England. Think of it as a burrito's British cousin who went to boarding school. I was hungry, the place smelled good, and I figured this was my moment. I ordered a beef pasty. They offer beef and chicken, and the beef one was pretty decent. Tasty enough, filling, and easy to eat on the go. Was it life-changing? No. Did I immediately start planning my move to Cornwall? Also no. But it was good. A few months later, I found myself in the area again and decided to give them a second shot. This time I ordered the chicken pasty and a side of potato salad. Unfortunately, the chicken pasty just didn't do it for me. It wasn't bad, and I certainly wouldn't call it inedible, but it felt like the seasoning department had taken the day off. I kept waiting for some flavor to show up, but it never really clocked in. The potato salad was kind of the same story. Perfectly edible, completely harmless, and unlikely to offend anyone. It also wasn't particularly memorable. If someone served it to me at a family picnic, I'd eat it. If someone asked me what I thought about it ten minutes later, I'd struggle to remember it existed. Now, I realize I'm sounding critical, but that's only because I'm a bit of a food snob. My philosophy is that if you're going to put something on the menu--especially when the menu is fairly small--every item should be trying out for the varsity team, not just showing up for attendance. That said, the people working there were friendly, service was quick, and the place seems to have a loyal following. My experience was basically this: the beef pasty was pretty good, the chicken pasty was forgettable, the potato salad was there, and everyone was nice. Would I stop again? Maybe for the beef pasty. But if I do, I'll probably leave the potato salad to those who enjoy living dangerously. read more

I ordered a variety of items, including a 6 pack of their beef pasty (comes with 2 gravy containers), veggie pasty, apple turnovers and a broccoli salad. I also got an extra side of beef gravy, which was so good that I may or may not have drank it while taking bites of the hot delicious pasty (thin flaky pastry crust filled with ground beef, potatoes, carrots and onions). I don't have one good thing to say about this experience. I ordered three pasties online yesterday, and they're lucky I did, because otherwise I would have walked straight out and given my money to a business that actually seems happy to have customers. When I walked in, there was a woman ahead of me with a large order and another woman behind me. Not one employee acknowledged us for ten minutes. No "Hello," no "We'll be right with you," no "Sorry for the wait," no "Welcome" -- nothing. The silence was LOUD. There were three employees right there (and the place is the size of a matchbox), yet not one of them spoke to us the entire time. This is exactly why places like Subway train employees to say, "Welcome to Subway!" I have never felt so ignored in my life. Once the woman ahead of me finally left, I was handed my order -- which had apparently been sitting there the entire time. Had anyone simply greeted me, they probably would have realized my order was ready and I could have left much sooner. Instead, we all just stood there being ignored. We watched an employee fill ten gravy cups while my food just sat there waiting. I understand that they're working hard. They're tired, it's nonstop, and it's a very small space. They clearly weren't happy, and every customer in that room could feel it. The employers should care about that. The food itself was awful, too. Maybe the beef one could have been decent, and maybe the chicken one had potential, but the vegetable pasty was downright disgusting. All of them desperately needed seasoning. You shouldn't have to drown food in gravy just to make it taste good. The entire experience was terrible. I even spoke with the woman who had been ahead of me in line in the parking lot afterward, and she felt exactly the same way. Never again. read more

Such a comfort food staple, and with frozen and fresh food options! Their pasties are MASSIVE and just so warm and flavorful it makes you all cozy inside. I love the beef one and get extra sauce and love to eat it outside when it's fall or winter as it just warms you up. Pasty kitchen meat pies are the bomb, both beef and the chicken are excellent, but make sure to get gravy it makes it twice as good. Their macaroni salad is also good. Service is quick as long as you don't go right at lunch time otherwise you can wait a few minutes. It's mostly take out, however, there are a few tables outside with umbrellas for shade. After hearing amazing things about this place and being only a few minutes away from the Long Beach VA, I decided to make a pit stop. Best decision ever because this place did not disappoint! I've never had a meat pie before, but they are very similar to empanadas and well who doesn't love a good empanada. They sell a variety of flavors in either small or large and two gravy options (chicken and beef). With an assortment of fruit pies and cookies. What I ordered: Small chicken with a small side of chicken gravy. Definitely my favorite. Small beef with a side of beef gravy. Also great. Small chorizo was good, but I prefer the chicken with chicken gravy. Chicken gravy is a bit more runnier and the beef gravy is thick. Both are flavorful and perfect for dipping. Broccoli salad- definitely a must if you are a fan of this salad. It's really good! Apple fruit pie takes me back to the McDonald's version from the 90's. Especially if you pop it in the air fryer for a couple of minutes. Cherry fruit pie was good, but the apple one was better. The difference between small and large comes down to how much can you eat. Keep in mind these meat pies are very hearty so I recommend getting the small one, but if you are sharing definitely get the large. I will say if you order to go, since they are fresh and packaged great, they stay warm for a while. They are easy to reheat in the oven at 350 for 10-15 minutes. Prices are very reasonable. The staff were friendly and helpful with going over the menu items. If there is a line, it moves pretty fast. Overall, definitely recommended! read more

I've been missing my grandmothers Beef potato pies she used to make and have never been able to find any place that compares. I got the beef pie and chicken pie. My bf has been seeing pasty kitchen all over IG and wanted to try it. So we finally decided to try it yesterday. I really liked both the beef and chicken pies. I thought they were big and hearty with lots of filling and OMG, the gravy made it just perfect! I also liked how the store front had a big window where you can watch them making the dough and meat pies from the outside. Thought that was cool for people to pass by a see it. Parking spots are limited in the back but there is street parking as well. Pricing was decent for the amount of food you get. Like I said, the meat pies were big and filling. How did I not know about this place? We ordered the Pasty box. Half chicken and half beef. They gave us two types of gravy. One for the chicken and one for the beef. They were pretty big compared to other places that have somewhat of an item that is similar. We all ate before having one so we shared and it was still filling! The meat inside was very moist. Tastes good without the gravy as well. We liked the beef gravy more than the chicken one. The line can get long and it is really small inside. This food has history and I'm loving that this hand held hefty pie has been here for so long and no one told me about it!! Location: Katella and Los Alamitos Blvd in Los Alamitos. Not sure if this is the original location, but it is located next to a historical park and the parking is in the back and on the street. Food: All pasty's but they have mostly savory and some sweet turnovers, but you're here for the meat pies. All the pies are hefty, hearty and very filling. Very fitting for a miner who wanted a meal and didn't have to go to the surface for food. The chorizo was chock full of meat and potatoes. The italian sausage was spicy and filled with potatoes also, but oh so yummy. Definitely come hungry and GET THE GRAVY. Don't forget that one. The chicken one was awesome in my book. I'd get all three again. Service was quick and prompt if not the friendliest, but I guess the idea is to get you going again without the fuss. Summary: There are no bathrooms or indoor seating. They have some outdoor picnic tables so most people took them home or ate their pies in the car. They do sell frozen pasty's and sweet turnovers and some pasty's are on offer for the season (first visit had turkey and cranberry sauce. pastys' on offer). There is no cooling off period because as soon as the pasty's are ready hot out of the oven, they are packed and given to you pronto. Bring plenty of napkins, an empty stomach, maybe a knife to split it open or for sharing; sitting in your car to eat and DON'T FORGET THE GRAVY. I didn't experience any mushy crust and even after reheating one of the pies in my toaster oven, it still held up the next day. Definitely coming here again for a pies. Thank you, miners!!! I went to Cambridge UK and tried the pasties there. It was very flaky and good. So when I saw pasty kitchen, I wanted to try it as well. The crust is more of a baked dough than the flaky crust I was expecting. The filling feels more like a breakfast burrito. The food is good, but I would not say it is a pasty. Another thumbs up for a local company. We went on Saturday and there was quite a line! We pulled up and it took a minute to find parking. The line moves fast and people are always coming and going. Don't get frustrated. This place has a very focused menu. It is not a dine in place. You are here for the meat pies and maybe some desert. Don't expect to have to make a big decision with this one. They make the pies in front of you. As soon as they come out of the oven, they are packed into the box and given to the customer. They don't spend time cooling down! Hot and fresh food. The pies are good but you need to make sure you have the gravy. The pies don't have a lot of spices. Gravy makes everything better! A couple of loose ends here... there aren't any bathrooms here. Make sure you are ready as you may need to wait in line to order. Next, the kids working on Saturday didn't appear to be the happiest. They weren't rude, just not friendly. If that is going to trigger you or make you mad, stay away so the rest of us don't have to hear about it. We are there to get our order and fill up on these perfectly baked goods. Looks like they had an ownership change which worried me. Repeated visits since then have been good. Things have changed, it looks different inside, added new stuff but, the same old stuff hasn't changed, fantastic. Every new thing I've tried has been really good. Inside used to look utilitarian, which was fine. Now it's much more restaurant like. Parking is ok. There's spots in the back and in front on the street but traffic is flying fast so use your brain and don't get dead. When they give it to you it's fresh out of the oven piping hot. I will continue returning for the delicious English meat pies. read more

A definite improvement of staff at this Pasty Kitchen behind the counter as we ordered our usual 2 small chicken and 2 small beef and oops only 1x peach turnover left and ok... I like Cherry. Everything was wrapped in good order. The pasties were great when we got home and yes, eating it warm is the best way to get all the flavors of the meat pasties out. Good mix of carrots and potatoes. The turnovers offer a nice sweet dessert. We will be back to Pasty Kitchen. read more

My dad and I used to order from here quite frequently during the 2000's-2010's and they were the best! Unfortunately, I've noticed some changes after going back a handful of years later. The meat was still red, but I figured it was just a bad batch so no biggie. Went back again a couple weeks ago, and the meat was still undercooked. The flavor of the pasty doesn't taste the same either, which is pretty disappointing. The gravy is still good, but the pasty itself is kinda bland now. They should probably rename this place because whatever they're serving now feels like a huge "f- you" to the previous owners :( read more

The pies are mostly filled with potato, with just a sprinkle of meat in each. Texture-wise, they're hearty, but overall, they really lack flavor on their own. The saving grace? The gravy. I drove up Seal Beach Blvd. and made a right on Katella. Couldn't remember if Pasty had parking or not. Made a u-turn on the first light, then saw the green curb on the whole block :) Got there around 11:00a. I ordered a beef, chicken and a peach! In the few seconds while I was ordering, the place got packed. Two friendly faces takes the order, I pay and out comes a bag with my order. Pretty clean process for sure. The place is just made for quick order and pick up. This was my lunch. I enjoyed the hearty beef more than the chicken. Peach was delicious too. Will be back for more! read more

The foods good, I just ate the beef one for the first time I've had the chicken about 2-3 times I eat it because it's good. My husband gets them and just brings it home. Would I go out of my way to get it tho...no. It's definitely missing something and as someone who eats pretty healthy I want to say it's missing some salt or something it's a little bland. The beef gravy isn't very good, the chicken one's delicious..that could be just preference though. The ingredients are fresh but again it's just a little bland and without the gravy I don't think I'd eat it at all.
