Stopped by the Gourmet House on a Tuesday evening after a sudden thunderstorm. Easy upfront parking. Immediately upon entering, very clean establishment with a nice, laid back vibe with good music. I was immediately greeted by Alyssa, my server. She was very attentive during my entire dining experience. This was my first time trying an Indonesian inspired restaurant. I chose the Blood Orange Guava tea to start, while I reviewed the menu. This tea was excellent and just as Alyssa described it: light and refreshing. When Alyssa returned with my drink, I told her I knew what I wanted to try by pulling up a picture posted on Yelp. She immediately recognized the dish and pointed it out on the menu. I chose the chicken and shrimp listed under the "skewers combo" from the menu. It is served with steamed rice with green onions. The rice was fluffy with no uncooked kernels - perfect. Fried rice was the other option. Chicken soup was the second side with the combo however, I took that home and have not tried that yet. I'm sure I will not be disappointed. The combo was served with a side of peanut sauce and a side of spicy sour sauce. The spicy sauce has just enough heat on the back end. Both sauces were perfectly balanced, still undecided which is my favorite. The chicken and shrimp were marinated perfectly. The meat was succulent and fork tender. The sweet ginger glaze was a perfect, finishing touch and not overly done. These were prepared right in front of me over a charcoal grill. Lynette was my cook for the evening. The dish presentation was on point via a long rectangular, plain white plate. The skewers were served upon a bed of cabbage with carrot slaw, that was very crisp and fresh. Lynette and Alyssa had shining attitudes while the manager and his sidekick provided entertainment via jokes. I will be taking the sidekick's (apologies, I did not get your name) suggestion to come back during lunch for the soup and salad combo. Upon leaving, a customer came in and requested a to go menu, so that is an option as well. I highly recommend this Indonesian Asian inspired restaurant. And on a side note to the manager and his sidekick: yes, definitely consider adding a splash of saki as an add-on to the tea. read more

First time going was a couple weeks ago and the atmosphere was welcoming &' the manager was very friendly and wanted to make sure everything was amazing for us. We had a very friendly server as well (wish I remembered her name) but she was attentive &' took great care of us. Everything we got for food was good . I was skeptical about the Crispy Pig Ear, that to me, didn't have much flavor but was different. &' REALLY ENJOYED the Cheese Pockets, love cream cheese and wonton appetizers. I ended up getting the beef/chicken skewer combo and it was good . &' the soup that came with it was amazing as well. We will be back ! Definitely enjoyed the atmosphere and experience. read more

This is the first Indonesian restaurant in Pensacola and I was super excited to try it. I make a few popular Indonesian dishes at home (mi goreng, nasi goreng & rendang) but I never had sate (skewers) Indonesian style. Being half Filipina I always suspect that some Indonesian dishes are similar to Filipino dishes as the countries are so close. Meat on a stick are popular in the Philippines. I tried the goat sate and it was great! The Goat Curry soup was tasty! The shrimp grill was enjoyable as well. The calamari was seasoned and fried perfectly, but I would've loved some tentacles in the mix as stated on the menu. The fried rice was good, but it could have used a little more flavor. Same for the Bakso (meatball soup). We also had the crunchy roll (spring roll) and they were decent. I was impressed by the Blood Orange Guava iced tea. Unfortunately my mom found a hair in her fried rice. The service was pleasant, but nothing was done about the hair. Eeek! Otherwise as a new restaurant the atmosphere looked fresh and clean. I do look forward to coming back and trying more sate, grills and soups. Note: I usually do not review two stars or below. I usually give 3 stars or higher. If they are below 3 stars as an established business, I don't leave a negative review. However, I do make exceptions to my rule, when it is a new business for constructive criticism. I will give them 90 days, and see if they improve. (My intension is for them to succeed). The restaurant is small but nicely decorated with some modern twist. Small dining area. It is an open kitchen so you get to see the food prepared. There is a bar area (like a sushi bar) where people can sit and watch them grill and prepare the food. One side, there is a tow of booths that seats 4. By the front door there are modular tables that can seat up to 8 people. If u are a party of more than 4 people, maybe u can call ahead of time and have them reserve the table up front, or just sit at the bar. We were a party of six, and we had to sit at bar. It is not my preference because it is hard to have a conversation with everyone in the party. We sat at 5:15pm on a Saturday. Two people sat after us, another two after them, two more at the bar, a party of three at a booth behind us. Two more Party of twos sat at two booths... and a party of four within 30 mins after us. We waited for our food for an hour and all those people who sat after us were served before drinks, apps, and their meal. Most of us ordered the combos which consists of satay, fried or steam rice, and a bowl of soup. We got our soup 30 mins after we ordered. After everyone else who sat after us got served, we finally got our satay and rice. I had to ask for utensils and napkins. The people who sat after got theirs when they were sat. One person in our party ordered grilled steak with rice. Her order was served when the rest of the party just got their soup. She should have been served the same time we got our main meal. The servers were very attentive with our soda refills. I give them that. However when it was time to serve the satay and rice, they had to ask who had the beef with shrimp, beef with chicken, chicken and shrimp, and they also asked who had fried rice or steam rice. I don't know what happened, but I am guessing the chef needs to be a bit more organized. The food did not go out in the order they were put in. When you have a portable ordering system, they should be marking for example, seat 1 had chicken and shrimp with fried rice, seat 2 should have beef and chicken and so on. Apparently, they were not using the technology to organize their operation. They were very disorganized. If you are reading this review, learn how to use your ordering system to your advantage. Learn it and use it well. Now the food: it was okay. It was basically your typical Asian street food. The portions were very small. There were 3 to 4 small pieces of meat per skewers. It appears each skewers is about 1 oz of meat. They were the size of Kraft's caramel cubes if not smaller. Price ranges from $4-$5 for chicken. Chicken wings as $7.99 for two wings, $4.75 for beef, $4.59 pork belly, $5.99 for lamb and $4.99 for 6 small shrimp (size 30-40). I would increase the portion a little more. ($3.99 for 6 cherry tomatoes... 3 each per skewer) I would suggest an all you can eat for $50 or less as an option. $30 for lunch and $50 for dinner. The grill uses binchotan charcoal which cost about $80 per 11lbs. The satay had great smoky flavor from the binchotan charcoal and the marinate was perfect. All and all, based on the price and portions, the value was not there. If they charge $1 - $2 per skewers, they will get more foot traffic. Restaurants these days need focus on value when affordability is the current issue. Charging more and serving less just does not cut it. This is why TGIF, Applebees, O Riley's are in trouble. You got to give your customer something to feel satisfied. We customers feel that we are currently being gouged and their excuse they use is inflation. We want our money's worth. If they continue as is, they may not last a year. Word of mouth and reputation is key on the first two years of a business. If you get bad reputation 1st year, there is no recovering. My partner and I spent over $60 and we weren't even full. I went home and I ate a quarter pounder to feel satiated. I will return after 90 days. When I return and nothing change, I will remove this review. This means, you are not worth reviewing and that is bad. If I see improvements, then I will modify this review. Good luck. read more

Sate House has potential, but the value doesn't quite match the price. The meat skewers have good flavor, but the portions feel too small. Paying $5 for a small chicken skewer is hard to justify. The pork belly portion, however, was just the right size and offered better value. If you're going to showcase dishes from your own culture, make them authentic and let them stand out. There's no need to play it too safe or cater only to common American tastes. Authentic flavors are what make a restaurant unique and memorable. I think the restaurant should review its menu, portion sizes, and overall offerings to give customers a better experience and a reason to come back. read more

So excited for new Indonesian restaurant in town!! The highlight of the menu is of course the sate!! I love the shrimp and beef sate. The seasoning is authentic and so delicious. You should eat it with the sambal. My favorite is the Balinese sambal matah. Spicy, citrusy, and so flavorful. Love it!! Also try the fried calamari and the street food meatball soup, they call it bakso. The service is good, the staff is very nice and friendly. The place is very clean and spacious. What a great place. It has only been open for 3 weeks and we will definitely be back. The restaurant has a large counter eating area (bar) where you can enjoy watching the staff prepare the food. We always opt for this type of seating when it is available. We have never been to an Indonesian restaurant and we were pleasantly surprised. They have lots of different appetizers, including several different types of spring rolls. We went with the fried calamari, which was freshly breaded and fried right in front of us. It was very good with just the right tenderness and a great sauce - think something like a plum sauce. There were several salads and soups which all looked really good. They had 12 different sate options, which are different choices of meat on skewers cooked over this really cool grill. There are also combo plates where you can combine sates, add fried or steamed rice and also a really good soup. I got the beef and spicy chicken combo with two different kinds of sauce - one being a super peanut sauce. We also requested sambal sauce to kick it up a notch and it did not disappoint. They have several other unique sauces we tried. They are all really enjoyable. We will definitely be back and plan on bringing people with us. My friend and I went for lunch (11:30), and were seated immediately. I ordered the cheese pockets and edamame. The cheese pockets, described on the menu as "light and crispy wonton pocket stuffed with seasoned cream cheese", came out quickly and I took a bite to find that they are stuffed with imitation crab. I don't do seafood, so I called our waitress over and asked her...just to make sure...if there was indeed crab inside of the CHEESE POCKETS. She didn't know so she went to ask, and came back to confirm that yes, there was. I feel like this should be listed on the menu bc if I was allergic to shellfish, there would have been a problem. Luckily my friend enjoyed them, so no money wasted. Edamame came out and it was fine. We then ordered two skewers each. We each got the spicy chicken and I ordered the pork while my friend ordered the lamb. They came out all on the same plate so we asked our server which was the lamb and which was the pork. She didnt know so she went and got the chef. She did not know either. They took their best guess and we figured it out. The chicken was great (not spicy but really good). The pork was fatty. My friend loved her lamb. She also got a side of the peanut sauce and it was really good! I thought the prices were very reasonable. This was opening week so I would definetly go back and try again. I just feel like with a pretty basic menu, the waitress should know what is what...but maybe she will learn in time. read more

We were looking for a new restaurant to eat at. We chose the Gourmet Sate House, boy we're glad we did! The layout is beautiful. There's an open cooking station almost in the center of the floor-plan where the chefs cook the food. There's a big overhead beautiful modern exhaust hood with a powerful fan that ensures clean air for customers. The cool station is surrounded by a large u-shaped bar with comfortable bar chairs for sitting and socializing or watching the busy kitchen.I love being able to see where my food is being cooked and the freshness of the food.I can say with absolute certainty this place is exceptionally clean and the quality of the food is delicious. Booths and tables fill in the perimeter of the restaurant.We ate in a booth and were very comfortable. There are three large tvs; I could already imagine us stopping in to eat and watch a game. We tried several appetizers: lamb kabobs, chicken wings, and crunchy spring rolls. All three choices were cooked to perfection and accompanied by a sauce for dipping. For the main course I had the grilled shrimp with rice and vegetables and a ginger salad, my husband had steak with rice and vegetables.I brought half of mine home to enjoy layer. The portions were perfect but all those appetizers made it impossible to eat all my dinner. The food was all so delicious and full of flavor; we'll definitely return! The staff and our waitress were attentive and so friendly, service was terrific. The only suggestion I can offer is they gently dim the lighting in the evening for a more relaxed feel and turn up or on some chill music to enhance the already cool vibe. If you're looking for a new place to try, I'd 100%recommend this restaurant. With a Costco about to open down the street, this may be my place to go before or after Costco shopping! read more
