We were on a mission to find the best fish tacos on the Island. Eureka! we struck gold. My husband David and me were driving along 25A and there it was in the charming village of Cold Spring Harbor. The freshest most delicious fresh fish dusted in panko and lightly fried~ topped with their delicious chipotle mayonaise and home made slaw, topped off with a container of mango sauce for each of us - We chose to take out and sit by the water, they supplied everything we needed to have a scrumptious lunch. Service was ok. Atmosphere was bland, which goes along with the bland food. Sanitary standards of most common restaurants were not met. 2/5 stars overall. I have been in search of the best fish taco on Long Island. A few reviews led me to this "quaint" little place in the center of Cold Spring Harbor (a town I absolutely love). The Gourmet Whaler is a small family run establishment and is quite friendly and inviting. The fish tacos were very good (8/10) as was everything else on the table. Christmas shopping in Cold Spring Harbor has been a tradition of mine for 40 years. The Gourmet Whaler is a warm inviting shop that offers yummy lunches and wonderful coffees, as well as lovely gifts in a relaxing setting. I liked that local artists and authors were some of the featured displays and gifts. Met up with some friends from Ontario here this afternoon, had a killer time there. Their oysters are superb! I didn't even get half way through my swordfish entrée before I was stuffed. This place is my new obsession. I have gone a few times, the most recent time being today with my mom. The interior is artsy and nautical, all different shades of a wonderful blue reminiscent of cape cod. As far as the food, I don't see how anyone could ever have an issue with any aspect of it. The lobster roll we each got was loaded up with delicious, tender lobster meat on a delicate potato roll. HEAVEN!! The renown fish tacos are always amazing. I'm sure everything else on the menu is fantastic too, but we love these two items too much to stray away- that's a good sign!! If you're lucky enough to get your hands on a slice of their homemade carrot cake, you're in for a real treat. Definitely the best I've ever had. Each cake has 6 cups of freshly grated carrots! (We had a little chat with the owners and husband and wife duo, Sean and Connie.) Everyone that comes in to eat or calls is on a first name basis with the lovely owners, giving it a really inviting vibe and making us want to become regulars too! After strolling along Main Street, visiting the Whimsey and other shops along the way, I came upon the Gourmet Whaler. It it brimming with charm, excellent coffee, home made pies, fudge and candies. The cafe's menu is well balanced with soups, sandwiches etc, all homemade and wonderful. This shop is under new management, I had the pleasure of meeting the new owners they were most accomodating. The cheese assortment is awesome, Hot & Sweet Cheddar, etc. You have to give this great shop a try.. its awesome! read more

the prices are a bit high but they are not making it up when they claim to have delicious fish tacos. the cabbage slaw on top of the fried fish put its over the top. for $12, you get two fish tacos...i would have liked it more if they included a side for that price. the store is cute and sells a variety of other local foodstuffs. read more

I brought some visiting family here for lunch and it was a huge hit! I have had the fish tacos before and they are some of the best I have had. My aunt had them this time and she said they are THE best she has ever had:) The atmoshpere is adorable, half shop with homemade pies, fudge and ice cream, half restaurant with great service from everyone. Delicious food and great staff! The acai bowl is the best around and the cakes, cookies and fudge are homemade - don't miss the crumb cake or the new chocolate cookie! The coffee is so good iced that it doesn't lose any flavor or strength. I have never eaten anything that wasn't super - sooooo much better than a diner in every way! the gourmet whaler is a great spot to stop and have lunch. it's casual, comfortable, yummy, and reasonably priced. the service is always quick and pleasant and there are irresistible baked goods (the homemade carrot cake is at least six inches tall and coated in the most amazing cream cheese frosting). it's unpretentious and comfortable, a great and much-needed addition to dining options in cold spring harbor. plenty of vegetarian options are great, too! read more

Awful. Rude servers, and it took an hour to get our food. And the food was AWFUL. The owner only made excuses, but the food we got was not complicated to make and they weren't busy. Certainly not going back there again! I got a grilled cheese with bacon, mostly because the prices were so high for anything else. The waitress assured me she loves the grilled cheese. It had to be one of the worst I've ever had. It had about sixteen slices of cheese on it, so as you'd expect it didn't all melt. There was all this unmelted cheese that I had to scrape off. And of course they forgot the bacon. The owner was nice, but made excuses. The waitress asked us how the food was and when we told her, she threw up her hands and walked away. This is by far one of my husband (Toe-knee ;) and my favorite places to eat!! We have been coming here for quite a few years and it is such a gem in small town CSH! And, it's towns away from us so you know it's good! The food is delicious, flavorful, and full of fresh ingredients. They always have just what we are looking for. Highly recommend their fish tacos, shrimp tacos & fried clam strips- YUM!! Their açaí bowls are amazing!! The soups in the fall/winter are some of the best I've had! Everything is fresh and feels good for the soul! The atmosphere is warm and welcoming with all the charms of a small town. The staff is exceptional (shout out to Andrea!) - and we absolutely love love love the owner, Denise, who makes you feel like you are an old friend coming over for a good meal. And boy is it good!! Hospitality and kindness pair well with great food! Also, save room for the *BEYOND* amazing homemade baked goods they have and if you don't have room, take it to go! The carrot cake, dark magic cookie, chocolate chip cookie, and raspberry squares are incredible! Also love when there are special desserts that come and go but always find their way back (ie: sweet potato brownies, chocolate pnut butter pie etc.)! I cannot begin to explain how much I love this place. Their acai bowls, avocado toast, and bird in hand chicken salads are definitely my top three, but the rest of the menu does not fall short. The owner of this establishment is also the baker, and she is a very nice, personable lady. She will bake you things catered to your favorite goodies! My friend loves heath bars and she promised to make her heath bar cookies if she left her number with the owner. My friend did, and a few days later she got a phone call that she made them and we were back at gourmet whaler eating delicious cookies that were made special for her! My family initially went in to get iced coffee and lemonade before we decided to sit on a table . First, the lemonade was not freshly squeezed and the powder mix they used was probably of low quality. Two of the six of us were hungry. And two kids wanted to split a plate. They charge a split plate fee which is deceptively located in middle of other sentences in front of one of the store windows - impossible to see. my daughter and i ate there today for lunch. it was the best food we had yet compared to any of the fancier restaurants. we met the owner who is also the baker. the pie crust is made out of pure butter,tasting more like a butter cookie. nothing was spared . this place is number 1 on my list. i highly recommend this to everyone.. murray read more

The Gourmet Whaler was recently renovated and is soooo much better than before! It is now bright and spacious inside. Before it was cluttered and dark. The food is delicious. The fish tacos are the best my fiancé and I have had, and we go out to eat a lot! We had coconut ice cream cones for dessert and it is now my favorite flavor of ice cream. We also bought the beer cheese to snack on at home later with crackers and it was delicious. Word is out about the Whaler because it was packed! The staff was very friendly and helpful. Great staff; friendly, relaxing atmosphere, perfect place to feel as if you're "getting away." They have a reasonably-priced menu and a fun selection of desserts including ice cream and fudge. Their ORGANIC house blend coffee is out of this world tasty! You can even sit outside and enjoy the mellow ambiance of Cold Spring Harbor. Parking is easy, either right out front or just across the street. The only thing we'd like better is if they'd listen to us and put a few organic selections on their menu ; ) read more

My husband and I stopped in this afternoon for lunch while visiting the area for the first time. The town itself is very quaint, and this adorable little spot fits right in with the cozy vibe and atmosphere. The vegetarian chili and chicken tenders (crusted with potato chips!) were delicious and homemade. The owner was very helpful as we decided on what to order. The only problem was, she described the menu items so articulatly, that we wanted to try it all! We finished off our meal with a slice of chocolate cream pie to go. We had heard that the owner had baked it herself and had received accolades from the likes of Newsday. We were afraid it would melt on our hour long ride home, so they packaged it up for us with ice packs....totally above and beyond! When we got home and tasted the pie we both agreed that it was the BEST we've ever tasted! Such a lovely experience in an equally lovely town. read more

I came here today for the first time and decided to order the fish tacos, as they advertise them as something they are known for. I often eat at restaurants in huntington village and figured I would receive similar quality and customer service. I only got a taste of the slaw on the first bite which was good, and then I got a bite of the "fish" which was completely inedible. I suppose the slaw was supposed to cover up the plastic consistency that the fish turned into. Poor fish. The flounder tasted like it had been dehydrated and deep fried. I told the waitress that I wasn't satisfied with the dish, and she begrudgingly brought over someone who I assume was a manager. The woman was shocked that someone would complain about the tacos and asked what I wanted to do about it. When I asked to see the menu to order something else, I was told that the kitchen was too busy. It was an uncomfortable interaction to say the least. A busy kitchen is no excuse to serve terrible food or to treat a paying customer like a complete inconvenience. Needless to say, I left and had a great lunch elsewhere. If the restaurant was having an off day, I'd give it a other chance. With that kind of customer service however, there would be no way I'd ever go back or recommend it. What a shame. read more
