I was visiting Glendale for a family function, so when my hubby and I got a moment alone we wanted to walk to dinner from The Hilton. We stumbled upon this tiny restaurant and decided to give it a try. From the beginning I could tell it was a little on the pricey side but I wanted something quiet and romantic. It was both quiet and romantic. The service was very attentive, however after receiving our food, I realized my husband's was not at all what he had ordered. I went there on a Tuesday night and the service was top-notch, waitstaff very polite. I left my cell phone on the table and the nice waiter ran outside to find me, so very honest! Unfortunately, the food was not. I ordered the mussels (there was no fish inside), an appetizer with mushrooms and bread in the center (I think it was a Grand's biscuit) and the fettucine alfredo with chicken (the noodles were incredibly soggy and there was no flavor to the cream sauce). Gennaro's has been around for many years and up until Valentine's Day 2012, was one of the finest ristorantes in the area, specializing in northern Italian dishes. Unfortunately, ownership changed in 2012 and this restaurant, in my opinion, has gone from excellent to very bad. All the old waiters, including Enrique and Rubin who were outstanding, have been dismissed and new younger servers have been brought in. I suspect this has been done to reduce costs. I also suspect the chef has also been replaced because the food quality and preparation has also diminished. The owner is also a very unpleastant fellow who doesn't seem to care whether your having a good or bad experience. The last time I had dinner at Gennaro's I ordered a lamb shank with risotto. When my dinner arrived the lamb shank was placed on top of a pile of mashed potatoes. When I asked about the risotto I was informed that they didn't have any risotto and that mashed potatoes were just as good. Come on !! mashed potatoes in an expensive northern Italian ristorante. Needless to say, I haven't been back, nor will I ever go back to this very disappointing establishment. read more

OMG!!! Run!! This place has the atmosphere of grandma's living room and the Italian food Stouffer's could beat. I liked the carpaccio, but the canned mushrooms were a big turn off. We ordered the Chicken Ravioli marsala (also with canned mushrooms) and I've had better frozen ravioli. They then brought some complementary fettucini alfredo which tasted like salt sauce on fettucini. The service was great except he showed no skills in the traditions of wine pouring. Ex: He poured the lady first without giving the gentleman a taste. Then, and I don't know how this is possible, the bread seemed--off-- and the garlic bread was Ralphs at best. I can't understand all the good reviews on this place. Especially about the service! What a waste of time and money. We had to drive out to this area to take care of some quick business and never like to waste a trip. So we searched restaurant.com and yelp and decided to try Genarro's. We started out by being seated and my wife asked the waiter where the restroom was. He said they didn't have one. She assumed he was joking and after a few pleasantries, she asked him again where the restroom was, and he again said they didn't have one, and left. We sat there kind of dumbfounded. Of course it's health code, they had to have restrooms and I can take a joke, but you know, don't walk away without answering the question. Plus the fact that they seated us without any menus. After leaving us for a few minutes he finally came back with menus and continued to tell us when asked, that they didn't have restrooms. When we asked where people go when they need a restroom he pointed to an area that looked like it lead outside. Turns out it was a small hall behind some partitions where the bathrooms were. O.K., our waiters a smartass. We can take it.....from a good waiter. He came back a short time later to take our order. My wife ordered the Veal Medallions topped with spinach and mozzarella. I ordered the Chicken Scallopini with Marsala sauce. He asked if we wanted any soups or salad, my wife declined I said I would like a salad with Ranch, he asked me "just a house salad", I said, "that's fine". Now you need to know our waiter was not writing down our order and there were only two other tables occupied the whole time we were there. A party of 4 and a party of 3. So they weren't busy at all. A big lesson we learned here is "Remember what you ordered, and how it was described in the menu". About 15 minutes later they brought our dinners. Mine was three very thin (dry) chicken breasts, in a marsala suace (helped with the dry chicken), 3 baby carrots, 2 small sprigs of broccoli and about 6-8 slices of potatoes that looked like they were supposed to be potato chips. They were apparently pan fried, but only slightly, just browned around the edges. For this I paid $21.95. My wife's plate had the same veggies and potatoes as mine, but her meat was not medallions, it was a piece of steak of some kind, sliced and for that it was SUPPOSED to be $29.95. She was kind of puzzled having expected veal "medallions" but didn't question it. The meat was charred on the outside and no pink on the inside. Due to the char taste on the outside she couldn't really tell whether it was veal or not. It wasn't until after the waiter had left the table that we realized, I never got my salad. About halfway through the meal when he finally returned to the table, we told him I never got my salad, and he claimed he thought I said no to the salad, but like I said above, after I said I wanted a salad he asked "house salad" and I said yes. So don't tell me you thought I said no....you forgot. He asked me if I still wanted my salad, and I said "yes please". Ten minutes later and after my dinner was gone, still no salad. He finally walked into the dining room, WITHOUT the salad of course, looked at our table, threw his head back in exasperation and ran back to the kitchen and a minute later returned with a salad, and acted like nothing was wrong when he placed it in front of me. I helped my wife finish her charred "veal" and after being offered and refusing dessert by others besides our waiter, then having to refuse again when our waiter finally returned with the dessert cart, then having to wait again for a check, finally having to motion to the waiter that we wanted the check, we got the check and were charged for $42 for a beef tenderloin, though again, we ordered the veal and it was only supposed to be $29.95. Our waiter had disappeared again so we called over another waiter and explained what happened. He took the check and came back and did change the charge to the price of the Veal, $29.95, but then claimed the meat my wife got was supposed to have been Filet Mignon. Come on....we may not know burnt Sirloin from Veal, but that was NOT, Filet Mignon. But they made the change without argument so we're good with it. But really. There were 4 wait staff in this little restaurant and only 3 tables occupied. I don't know what had our waiter distracted but surely he had something else going on that was more important than his customers. And he really needs to carry a pencil and order pad. When we left he was hanging around in the front lobby on his cell phone. The food was bad and over priced. The piano player was pretty good and managed to play a song and check her text messages without skipping a beat. If you're looking for a bad, over priced meal and lousy service.....try Gennaro's. A co-worker brought me here for lunch recently and I was pleasantly surprised by the experience. The restaurant is small and quiet - a great place for a business lunch or I suppose for a date if one were so inclined. The atmosphere is very upscale, in my opinion. Nothing uber fancy - but "prim and proper" would be a fair way of describing the decor and feeling inside. The service was prompt and friendly. The staff made sure our water was kept full and our needs were met. My colleague had the tomato soup and the special pasta dish, which was penne with a cream sauce, chicken and sun dried tomatoes. He swears by the soup and said he always gets a bowl of whatever the special is. I had the insalata princepessa, which is endives and baby greens, with grilled chicken, asparagu, hearts of palm and tomatoes with a vinagrette dressing. The dressing was more vinegar than oil - which was fine - and all of the ingredients tasted fresh. I usually like my hearts of palm a little stiffer than they were, but they werent mushy or anything. Finally, it was HUGE - i ended up keeping half of it for dinner. I have to give a special nod to the bread basket which included a variety of simple rols, garlic bread, and focacia. I'm a self-described bread slut, so I tried all three and all three were really good. I even sneaked a couple pieces to take back with the rest of my salad. The meal was a little on the pricey side, so its not some place i'd go every day for lunch. But for a business meal or to splurge, its not a pretty good choice. read more

So I got a message from the manager offering me a free bottle of champagne to go back and try the restaurant again and now saying that they do accept the restaurant.com certificates, but that they don't accept it during holidays. I replied that I didn't consider Valentine's Day a holiday and said thank you, but no thank you. I didn't wish to go back to the restaurant with an owner that has such disregard for his customers. She again replied thanking me for replying. But then right after that, she posts on Yelp that it does state on restaurant.com that certificate are not accepted during holidays or special events. THAT INFORMATION WAS NOT THERE BEFORE. We read the restaurnat.com certificate at the restuarant and also when we got home. NOWHERE did it say that prior to her posting today. That's completely new. So now I like them even less for lying about that and posting on Yelp to save their butts. This restaurant does not care about their customers. There was another couple there that night whose car was locked in the garage next door. All the server said was that it wasn't their parking lot and didn't bother to help out in any way. If they truly cared about the customer, they would have done anything possible to get in our good graces, at the least offered to accept the certificate or give us a $25 discount. Strange and empty on a Saturday night. Weird location with no other shops or restaurants nearby. We started off being grossed out by the drinking water which must not have been filtered because it smelled terrible. Had to ask for an ice bucket for the bottle of prosecco we ordered that had been set down on to our table. The bucket came with some water in it and 3 partially used gel packs that looked like they came out of a first aid kit. No ice. Wonderful neighborhood gem. We started with a Caesar salad and smoked salmon appetizer. Both were wonderful. The atmosphere is nice and there was a woman playing piano. Tony and Stephanie were helpful and attentive servers. I had the pappardelle and sausage and my wife had the filet mignon. The pasta was freshly made and the sausage was excellent. This place is awful!!!! First came in and it was completely empty on a Sunday night. The waiter walks us into the dining area and didn't seat us but told us to sit wherever. I was already skeptical because there was no one in there so I went on Yelp and started reading. How did anyone give this place a good review?! It is so awful. I ordered the fettuccine chicken with tequila sauce and the chicken was so chewy I didn't eat it. Then! The calamari tasted like it came out of a microwave. So gross! The bread was also awful. Golf tournament brought me into Glendale and Googled to find an upscale restaurant. Gennaros came up 4 + stars and every review was positive, so it was a no brainer. However, I wondered how many were written, by friends, family and the bank holding the loan. Cynicism aside, I stayed open minded and put my amateurs food critic mode on hold. Glad, I did, because this is a gem. Creative menu, preparation equal to a far more expensive eatery. The decor is a modern version , of the cozy romantic italian restaurant of old. The owner, is friendly and doesn't hesitate to inject his sense of humor adding to the already excellent dining experience. One might ask, why the 4 stars, simply, its not perfect, but nothing that detracts from 2 hours of enjoyment. read more
