About six months ago, the remote for my secondary garage door opener stopped working. The opener is a 20-year-old LiftMaster belt-drive unit. Since I have a home warranty policy, I contacted the warranty company and requested service, and they dispatched Graham Garage Doors out of Dublin, CA. Ron Graham and one of his technicians came to evaluate the issue. I explained that while the remote no longer worked, the garage door opener itself still functioned properly using the wall switch. Ron immediately stated that the opener needed to be replaced and said he would contact the warranty company to obtain approval for a new unit. During the visit, Ron warned me that the warranty company would likely only approve the "cheapest" replacement available. However, he also stated that he could upgrade the replacement to a belt-drive Chamberlain unit for the amount the warranty company would cover, implying there would be no additional cost to me. After several weeks passed without any follow-up, I began calling their Bay Area office at 925-344-1274. Cali consistently answered the phone, and I repeatedly requested that Ron return my calls. I also sent emails attempting to get an update. Despite these efforts, communication remained extremely slow and inconsistent. Eventually, weeks later, Ron responded and informed me that the warranty company would only pay for a "Genie 1/2 HP belt-drive builder-grade unit," which he described as an entry-level opener. He then offered to install a Chamberlain belt-drive unit for an additional $175 plus tax, despite previously indicating that this upgrade would be covered at no extra cost. He also offered a LiftMaster model for an additional $550 plus tax. I reminded Ron of his original statement during the initial visit, when he indicated that he would install the Chamberlain belt-drive unit for the amount the warranty company would pay, with no additional out-of-pocket cost to me. In response, Ron stated in an email: "Hello, unfortunately I was mistaken and unclear on units. Depending on what they approve and as of the last two years they want the base minimum installed." Initially, Ron did not specify which LiftMaster model he was proposing. After I specifically requested the model number and additional details regarding the $550 upgrade, he identified the unit as the LiftMaster 6690L. Graham Garage Doors appears to have excellent reviews online, and both Ron and Cali have always been polite and cordial during conversations. However, my personal experience has been frustrating due to the lack of communication, long delays, and inconsistent information regarding pricing and replacement options. Have been calling them from 2 months asking them to share diagnosis report to submit it to home warranty, but the communication is worse. It's a really long story and I don't want to repeat the same thing what I have told them from last 2 months. Kept saying they will call back but never did. You had approved that the door was fine, & Ron was back again recently to confirm the same. I just kept calling you day after day, week after week, with all of you promising to provide the report. NOT that I wanted to hear a different story from you each time I called. You could have told me that you cannot provide the report. Again its a long story, which I don't want to explain it here. I had let others know what I had to experience because I didn't get proper responses from your team. I know you have a reputation to keep up for your company & its your livelihood. We damaged our garage door early in the afternoon on Halloween, bending the bracket so severely that the door wouldn't close all the way. What a perfect day for this to happen! :-( I reached out to Ron, who promptly responded. Not only did he fix the door within a couple of hours, but he also upgraded it with much better rollers than we had before. The door has never sounded this quiet. The installer who represented himself as the owner was very nice at the time, presenting me with a bill for $599.00 which included his installation charges plus an additional $100.00 which was too have been paid by the ins. company. It has been just over 6 months and the opener is making so much noise when I open it that my neighbors are starting to complain.
