I've been living nearby for years but only recently went to Grand Central Bakery. I'm not sure why, but I always avoided this place but maybe because it always seemed busy. I think there's a good reason they're busy, the bread, sandwiches and drinks are all very good. They have a cafe with sandwiches, salads, soups and delicious baked goods. My daughter loves their latte and I can tell they make it with care. I love their daily soups, especially the potato leek is delicious. And I have been getting their breads in the stores for years. I've also had their ham sandwich on baguette which is simple but very good. It may be my favorite place within walking distance. The prices are good, their service is excellent. Yes, it's always busy but I can usually find a seat. Family friendly.

Such a cute cozy vibe and love that they have a parking lot! Our sandwiches were great and the pastries looked so yummy!!

Was gifted a box of lovely pastries. I am very thankful as it wasn't part of my itinerary, it turned out very memorable. Got a chocolate croissant, blueberry muffin, cinnamon roll, and monkey muffin. Everything was very enjoyable. My favorite was the cinnamon roll, it was amazing! Not too sweet, light milky creamy icing/topping, cinnamon was not overpowering. I think about this every once in awhile and kind of regret not getting more of this to bring home.

We went for lunch at 1:20 on a Thursday. We had to wait 40 minutes for our food order of one sandwich and one salad, even though there were seven people working and the restaurant was half full. Then as I was eating I discovered the (inedible) green top of the tomato. Disappointing all around.

Sausage on a potato bun works best.

I've been a loyal customer for years: the staff is great (especially during COVID) and they offer a number of excellent items. Their double chocolate cookie is a bite of heaven. However, the Korean soup needs to go! It's basically cabbage, hot water, and maybe a carrot slice; gross. I will put the 4-Star back, but just want this to appear for awhile.

    Classic Cinnamon Bun

This would surely be a top contender for best Cinnamon Bun. The fresh yeast taste and soft, chewy texture really do it for me. The espresso is a good counterpoint to the sticky sweetness of the bun. As is to be expected with a place this impressive, the lines can be a bit long, so plan accordingly.

Food is dependably good; avoid crowds at noon hour if possible! A little noisy so no private meetings but heh, it's a sandwich shop!

Walking in less than an hour before closing, we were surprised to see most of the items still in stock! We ended up picking four things to try: Vanilla Bean Kouign Amann ($7) - This pasty has a sweet yet salty exterior that's complementary in flavor rather than clashing. It's accentuated with a crunchy glazed and caramelized sugar layer that's on the sweeter side. The interior is interesting. There's a cavernous gap right in the center that's filled with a sickly sweet melted sugar syrup. It's unpleasantly sweet and very cloying. The puffed and filled area is large enough that it compresses the other layers so the kouign amann is dense. I've never had a kouign amann quite this sweet before. (3/5) Meyer Lemon Olive Oil Cake with Thyme ($5.50) - This cake is so moist and rich, thick and dense, fatty and rich, that it feels like I"m eating a slab of butter. I'm sure it has just as many calories too! It's quite sweet, although not nearly to the level of the kouign amann. Overall, it's just a really rich and decadent cake. (4/5) Blueberry + Vanilla Cream Brioche Donut w/ Earl Grey ($6) - The top of the pastry is dressed with a cream that has an unmistakably strong bergomot earl grey taste. I wish there was way more cream - there's essentially only a dab on top! The rest of the donut is filled with a custardy light blueberry and vanilla jam. It's not too sweet and has an excellent high quality blueberry fragrance, creating an exceptionally strong blueberry taste. The jam is not too thick and is somewhat syrupy from sugar. The donut itself is really soft and extremely airy. It's the fluffiest donut I've eaten in a long time. (5/5) Raspberry Rose Cruffin ($8.50) - This pastry has some fun dehydrated raspberries sprinkled right on top of a light and fluffy cream that's not too sweet. The cruffin base is buttery in taste and great lamination even when filled with the custard and rose/raspberry cream. This is a heavy cruffin that's very filling. (5/5) Twisted Croissant certainly does some some really delectable treats. It's one of my favorite bakeries in Portland!

I'm not sure that I can justify spending $7 to $12 on a single pastry. This will have to be my special occasion bakery, I suppose. Additionally, I had a less than pleasant exchange with one of the employees. It kind of caught me off guard because that has never happened before. Maybe she was just having a rough day.

But let's talk about their quiche. We got the corn pepper quiche and it was one of the best quiche I have had in awhile. Similar in texture to quiche from Coyles in Seattle but the floor was so good. Pie wise we got the ginger plum streusel, whiskey peach and Marionberry. All delicious but Marionberry was the standout. I wish they still have something with rhubarb but the season was already over when we went. We actually went back on our way home to Seattle and picked up the salted honey, tart cherry, and peach streusel. All good. Get there early for the best selection. I particularly recommend their chocolate, strawberry shortcake, and key lime pies. S'mores is also a solid choice. All of their pies have a great crust: flakey, thick, and excellent when dipped in coffee. I wasn't fond of the whiskey peach because it had a strong whiskey flavor, but this pie would be great for whiskey-lovers. Although the prices are pretty high, the pies are so good, and they are definitely worth trying! All of the workers are very friendly and helpful, and the restaurant has plenty of seating. It can be hard to find free parking nearby, so I recommend parking in an adjacent neighborhood if you can find a spot.
