I've been living nearby for years but only recently went to Grand Central Bakery. I'm not sure why, but I always avoided this place but maybe because it always seemed busy. I think there's a good reason they're busy, the bread, sandwiches and drinks are all very good. They have a cafe with sandwiches, salads, soups and delicious baked goods. My daughter loves their latte and I can tell they make it with care. I love their daily soups, especially the potato leek is delicious. And I have been getting their breads in the stores for years. I've also had their ham sandwich on baguette which is simple but very good. It may be my favorite place within walking distance. The prices are good, their service is excellent. Went to Grand Central Bakery, not knowing whether I was able to purchase anything or not. It was convenience to order during a quarantine. The order taker was inside the store and the door was open and you ordered through the door. There was order counter and you could see various pastries, so you could easily select what you wanted. I understand that you could also order sandwiches online, in addition to pastries. Then go over & pick them up. I thought the pastries were great, but the one with chocolate, when my husband heated it up in the micro it was dry like cardboard (didn't seem like it was fresh), but the next day, we tried another pastry this one had cream cheese, heated it up and it was much better & tastier, what pastry I have wished for. We got Coffee Cake (I usually don't like coffee cakes, but I like this one!) Cheese Danish (must have been what we had today). :) Croissant (will update later). I was over at mcpeets and decided to walk across the street to this place. I love how eveything is close by on freemont. When I walked inside the pure bliss of that fresh bread smell! So I ordered two cinnamon rolls and two latte sticks. Throw the cinnamon roll in the microwave for about forty seconds, throw some butter on top and you got hot flashes for the day. That's a good thing by the way lol. The latte sticks were very good, It had alot of flavor in every bite. Normally once a week my daughter and I stop by the Milwaukee Grand Central Bakery, the employees and service there is fantastic! However today we decided to stop by this location because we were in the area. This is by far is the rudest customer service I have ever received. As I was ordering, my 15 month old daughter behind me was fidgeting with their displayed items. The barista ran to her, grabbed the item out of her hand and started lecturing her. I know I should have been watching her better, but I had just turned around for a second to make an order. It was very unnecessary to come off so aggressive and then to continue being rude to me as I placed my order. This location is perpetually running out of menu items early on in the day. If you want breakfast, arrive right when they open or else you run the risk of them running out of key ingredients/items in just a couple hours. I've arrived to this location once at 12:30pm and they were already out of multiple ingredients to make the lunch sandwich I wanted - when they still had over two more hours left in the work day. Someone needs to fire the person who's doing their supply ordering because they clearly don't know what they're doing. On top of this, this is by far the slowest GC location in Portland. I've been to all of them and Sellwood can get pretty backed up and slow on weekend mornings, but the Fremont location is constantly slow. I tried it three times this summer, and each time it's gotten worse, with tough bacon and mushy tomatoes. With all the turn over in the employees lately, it seems weird for a B Corp to have such little employee satisfaction that they would keep leaving. I hope they can right this ship. Given that Grand Central started out as a roadside farm stand up on Lopez Island in the San Juans and over time grew to be a sizeable corporation serving scores of vendors in Seattle and Portland, Grand Central manages to put consistently high quality loaves and pastry treats on its countless shelves. Our favorite breads are the campagnolo, the como, and the peasant levain, and while they're being sliced who can resist asking for a couple of monkey muffins. We're very pleased that their breads and pastries use local and sustainable ingredients. I have stopped in for sandwiches nearly all year. Sorry I did not do a review before. They have adjusted the systems for ordering and picking up food through the course of the past year. It seems to improve with each adjustment. It feels almost seamless now. I have learned their online ordering system. It is pretty straightforward. They tell you when the food will be ready. It is generally ready on time. It is always good; it is always correct. Love their tuna salad sandwich; Rebecca likes the German ham. I am very glad they have remained open throughout the process.
