Located in a residential area, this looks like a fairly large establishment but only have a few tables set up. This allows for patrons to wait inside without feeling congested but also means you'll have to be quick whenever a table does clear out. The selection of items here aren't much so most people probably come here for their lunch/entree menu. They assemble everything fresh it appears-- they heat up croissants at the griddle and use the toaster oven to heat up others. The cookie was intensely dense and rich in chocolate. After visiting another bakery in town and finding that they had sold out of all their croissants, we decided to visit Little T American Baker as a backup. In contrast to a lot bakeries that are primarily takeout only, Little T has a much larger footprint with plenty of seating. When we walked in on a weekend morning, there were lots of people sitting around, sipping on drinks, and working. Kouign Amann ($6) - The top of the kouign amann (the bottom while baking) looks nicely glazed with plenty of sugar. They layers look well defined and it looks like a crispy flaky treat. The other side looks like a sad wrinkly croissant. The interior consists of really thick laminated layers that have a ton of air gap in between that has more in common with risen puff pastry than croissant. This makes it thick, bready, and doughy and gives it a wheat flour-like taste rather than sugar or butter. There isn't that much crispness and other than a bit of sugar glaze on top, the pastry isn't very sweet, not is it buttery at all. I didn't like this kouign amann much. (2/5) Chocolate Praline Croissant ($6.25) - This croissant looks like it has decent layering and a great flaky crust at first glance. The croissant is indeed very flaky and crisp on top, making flakes and powdered sugar fly everywhere while eating. The lamination is again a bit questionable, with very thick layers and huge air pockets making the croissant very bready. At least there's no wheat flour taste. There's only a single line of chocolate in the center rather than the more typical two chocolate baton configuration. The chocolate leaks out of the sides of the croissant, caramelizing against the baking sheet and creating different flavors. (3/5) Masa Baguette ($5.75) - This baguette has a great crust combined with a moist and chewy interior. It's much darker in color than a typical baguette and has a very well developed taste, like sourdough mixed with corn. A very interesting take on a baguette that's quite delicious. Also of note is how they serve the baguette - wrapped up in butcher paper with an end of the baguette sticking out. (5/5) Unfortunately, I didn't find the laminated pastries to be very good at Little T. Size-wise, the pastries seem to be a bit smaller than competitors but with similar pricing. Everything is very high quantity. It's very apparent that the bakers are very experienced.

I ordered the tuna salad sandwich today, and it was so salty I honestly couldn't eat it. I ended up throwing the whole thing away, which was really frustrating for a $14 sandwich. The last time I ordered it, I asked the woman at the counter if it could be made on sourdough, and she said, "No problem!" Then it came out on the wrong bread. When I pointed it out, she just looked bored and said, "You need to say Country Loaf next time." Two bad experiences in a row is disappointing and I think I'll go to Grand Central from now on. read more

I got the lox on spelt bread and it was tender and delicious. The lattes are good and the pastry we shared was excellent (cream cheese brioche). My only disappointment was that it's all takeout - no dishes or china cups, just paper and plastic utensils. They do have a few spots where you can sit and eat/drink. read more

I really didn't like the pretzel baguette thing that the apple, bacon, chevre sandwich came on. It didn't have much pretzel flavor and the texture just felt kinda stale to me. Had a lovely experience here. Visited on a Monday morning, wasn't crowded and plenty of seats to sit and enjoy yourself. I got an oat cappuccino and a smoked salmon toast, and we also indulged in the blueberry hazelnut bar and a chocolate brownie-cookie type of treat. We're big bread nerds - bake own sourdough and pastries using largely Tartine methods for about 20 years, enjoy finding great bread when we travel. Little T was excellent! We got: -croissant (delicious, light, shattering crust and perfect honeycomb interior) -kouign amann (delicious, lighter and less sweet than most versions I've had elsewhere - enjoyed it, though stylistically unique for the this type of pastry, more like a slightly caramel-lacquered croissant than dense, sticky-sweet kouign amann I've had in the SF area or Brittany) -Demi baguette -whole meal country loaf - we haven't cracked into this yet but a cafe we ate at yesterday served their fancy toasts on this Little T bread The breads are for breakfast tomorrow but they look, feel, and smell amazing. And of course breakfast offerings like French toast, egg, bacon and cheese in a croissant - just to name a few. Legit croissants, probably one if the top 3 in Portland. Little T distributes their products making it easy to pick up baguettes or pastries at Providore and other locations around Portkand, but every once in awhile I need to go to the mother ship! As neighbors, we've been coming regularly into this place since it opened. Not once has the staff ever acknowledged that they know or recognize us. The bread is good, we've recommended it to others for years. But the attitude is so bad that another one of our neighbors goes to grand central. The bread no longer makes up for the rude insolent resentful attitude toward the people who've supported it. Enough is enough, there have been reviews about this for years. It is a problem in our neighborhood that this type of attitude is acceptable in any business, but especially food service. Just a couple of many examples; the most recent was when I asked if they had an emergency phone number for the apartment building next-door, and I was told with almost an eye roll. 'They don't have that sort of thing.' My husband asked about the daily bread and the guy wouldn't even look at him. Once when they first opened and I asked if they had a bread slicer, I still remember the girl was pissed at me for asking and because she didn't know what that was. Over many years we've tried to bring this up in person with managers and owners- not once has this ever been met with understanding or an assumption of our integrity. Judging from other reviews and personal experiences, this has been an issue forever. There's zero excuse for this behavior until it stops- consider buying your bread elsewhere. read more

The breads are still good. The selection of breads and pastries seems to be very minimal - maybe bc I go late afternoon? But it becomes a disappointment to arrive without being to leave with some goodies. Service is disgusting (hygiene wise). A few times, a certain individual serviced me...this person have no expression, no eye contact, no courtesy. Fine, whatever...but this person does not follow hygiene protocols. One time - in describing the breads to me, this person touched them all with her bare hands while gesturing at the ones mentioned. I gave it the benefit of the doubt that this person have clean hands. Another time, this person was counting cash, currency and coins. I LOVE Little T's and have been a regular for the past couple years. These folks are super consistent with their baked goodies! My personal favs include blueberry corn scones, chocolate croissants, and ANYTHING involving the pretzel rolls. Coffee here can be a hit or miss depending on how busy the place is. This weekend I saw three folks working and maybe a dozen (!!) folks waiting or ordering. My latte tasted a bit bitter (but strong), and it was prepped and ready for pick up within speedy time. Still my favorite bakery in Portland! Usually I get the Kougin Amann - the salty sweet buttery perfection is too hard to pass up - plus it's a rare find in pdx! But the last time I went, I decided to try two new items: the cream cheese brioche bun and the hazelnut bear paw. The cream cheese brioche bun was good but it didn't blow my mind. I liked the rich texture of the cream cheese and the crystallized crunch on the bread, but I don't think I'm a big brioche person. If the cream cheese was on some pastry dough instead, that would be wow! The hazelnut bear paw was sooooo amazing. First cautionary note should have been when we called at 11. Call rang several times, got voicemail instructing us that they were busy and to leave a number for a call back. We did and by around 11:30 hadn't received a call. Called again, got the same message. At that point we were hungry and ready to go somewhere else but it was a nice day for a drive so we headed over there. Interestingly, the place was empty. Staff wasn't busy, took our order for sandwiches and some baked goods (all to go) with no hesitation. Heard the phone ring while we were waiting, it was answered immediately. If anything, the highlight of the trip was the Italian Salamis sandwiches. A decent amount of meats, nice spicy undertone, very flavourful dressing. Review on the tuna sandwich was "underwhelming". And the baker in our group described the sweets we got for dessert as "doughy" and "chewy". She thought that they might have been over-proofed (I'm not familiar enough with the concept to know what this means). Overwhelmingly, nice day for a drive, big "meh" on the food. The sourdough baguette is the best in Portland. I like all of their breads but I am partial to sourdough. There are no bad choices here. HOWEVER - the croissants are the best I've ever had. Buttery and flaky. They taste fresh baked. They are light and you can peel the layers as you should be able to with a well made croissant. By far my favorite place for bread and croissants in Portland. Sandwiches are ok and their cookies are not my fave, but there is no other bakery in Portland whose baguettes mimic a French boulangerie. It has just the right crust, chewiness in the center with a hint of salt. I could polish off a baguette daily. Their viennoiserie is also delicious and the closest you will get to a trip to France in Portland. The lamination is spot on and the butter never seeps out. honestly, i'm not a "yelper" but this experience was rather disappointing and the atmosphere here offered none of the "friendly neighborhood coffee shop" that one hopes to have in their stomping grounds. was catching all the snob vibes and the drinks are incredibly overpriced for the baristas not even to shake or stir the ingredients so that the drink is properly mixed. i was given the wrong size than the drink i ordered and paid for, and the barista did not even acknowledge her mistake or breathe a simple "sorry about that;" they simply grabbed it back and poured more milk in a new cup (without even stirring it). additionally, i had my pup with me who is ESA and very well behaved, i understand the "no dogs inside" rule but the way they approached the topic left the first bit of sour taste in my mouth... all in all, i'm disappointed i chose to go somewhere new to explore my new neighborhood...and mm oh man do i miss walking my pup to Kopi coffee every morning....where the baristas became the first happy part of my mornings and the drinks are made with care every time...and shaken, so that frothy perfect mixture made the cost worth it! read more

The country loaf is one of the best I have had. I got Ficelle (thinner baguette), country loaf, and sourdough baguette. This country loaf might be 2nd to Tartine bakery which I regard as best in the US. They don't answer phones (b/c they are too busy) and they could slightly up the customer service aspects but there is no denying they have some great products. My kids got pastries (no complaints) and my wife got a chai tea (above average). If I lived in the PNW I would frequent here. read more
