I want to start off by saying that it saddens me to write this review of the Grande Colonial Hotel in La Jolla, CA because I had such high expectations for such a grand hotel with a deep, rich history. Of the hotels in La Jolla, this historic hotel has the location, the history, and the most opportunities to be much more than it is today. It started off great! The hotel was in a fantastic, easily accessible location. We pulled up in our car and the valet politely took our car away and there we were, at this enormous opportunity for a grand vacation in wonderful La Jolla! Well, the adventure started on a slight decline from that point forward. There seemed to be 4 staff members crammed in the tiny space behind the front desk and not one of them really knew who was on first. Eventually we made eye contact with someone who could check us in. The gentleman was polite yet soft spoken, which made it difficult to hear what he was saying. He forgot to mention the package that we had booked, but I reminded him and then he explained it to us. I asked what kind of room we booked because I wanted to verify that we were getting the right one. He said that we were in a junior suite with ocean view. That is exactly what I booked, and yes, I paid extra for this ocean view. We then took off to our suite only to find out that it is not located in the main building and that there were quite a few stairs for us to go down with our 4 bags of luggage before going outside and then into another building. Arriving at the other building we were greeted upon opening the door to that building by an awful stench of a smell. Now, originally, I thought that it smelled like cat or dog urine, however I gave them the benefit of the doubt that this was probably, hopefully, some strong turpentine cleaning chemical of some sort. Luckily, once we got into room 102, we could hardly smell it as much. Now for the room. The room, indeed. Sigh. Well, the room had a horrific layout as the it appeared to have been built for a different setup than what the hotel was using it for. Perhaps it had separate rooms at some point in the past. The king size bed was just way too big for the space. The bed almost blocked the path from one side of the bed to other rooms. It was a very tight squeeze and not for the light hearted. The rooms furnishings were adequate, however the surfaces (wood, fabric, etc.) were not only dated, but it was obvious that they had been worn and used well beyond their intended lifespan. In addition, they were not well maintained. The side chairs upholstery was not clean as there were stains on the arm rests. The room carpeting had been beaten down over the decades. Not even the drapes were clean. I'm okay with dated furnishings as I really like the 60's and 70's style, however they just need to be in full working order and clean! The subflooring was an issue and the floor creaked and moaned with each step. This was especially bad in the bathroom and in front of the sink in the sitting room. The floor in the bathroom was not level. The "ocean view" really was more of a partial ocean view as we had plenty of windows, but there was just one spot where one could see the ocean. Most of the view was of the hotel pool or other houses between the hotel and the ocean. You also could not see the beach at all. We had room service for breakfast both mornings of our stay. This was outstanding! We really enjoyed the quality of the food from the Nine-Ten restaurant on the hotel property. We noticed that while we had 3 bath towels and 3 hand towels, that we only had 1 wash cloth. We needed at least 2. I called "housekeeping" on the phone but the front desk answered. I informed them of a lack of wash cloths and they asked me how many we needed and I asked for 2. A while later, a guy arrived at our door with 3 hand towels. I told him that we needed wash cloths, not hand towels. Now, I don't know how stupid he thought we were, but he said that those were wash cloths. Now, I know that they like to do things big in California, but out here in Iowa a wash cloth is considerably smaller than a hand towel. But luckily, I knew that they had was cloths because we had 1 in our room that I could show him. I told him that I would show him a wash cloth. He waited while I went to the bathroom to get the wash cloth so show him what one looked like. He said that he would be back with wash cloths. Sigh. Upon getting ready for check-out, we wanted our car available since we needed to get to the airport to catch our flight in a timely fashion. We used the phone to call "valet" and there never was an answer, it just continued to ring. We figured that we would save time just going to the front of the hotel and requesting our car than to keep calling. read more

Excellent hotel, lovely room and facilities, and the staff made my wife's birthday weekend exceptional. Ms. Lescano was able to have flowers and champagne and a lovely card waiting in our room when we arrived, and Bryan the valet/bellman was extraordinarily friendly and helpful all weekend.I hope they receive special recognition for their outstanding service, which I especially appreciated in these trying times. read more

We were headed to San Diego and opted to stay in La Jolla and were glad we did. From the moment we pulled up to the Hotel and until the minute we left this hotel lived up to the hype. We love historic hotels and the Grande was perfect for us. Doormen were great, check in smooth, lobby is small and understated and that was fine. We reserved a partial ocean view and got the room on the NW corner top floor. It was really spacious, and we were very happy when we walked in. It couldn't be in a more convenient location for being in La Jolla, and the property was perfectly maintained. We ordered room service one night for dinner, it was great and reasonable priced. The best kept secret about this place is that there is a sunroom/library down at the suites building that has a couple loungers on the deck. It overlooks the coves and is a great place to chill. We loved this place and will be back next time we are in the area..... AL read more

This is a nice hotel with a lot of character. The room we stayed in had great ocean view, but was on the small size. This is to be expected since the hotel is over 100 years old. The staff in the hotel is great. From the the moment we pulled up to the front of the hotel the staff acted like we were the only guests in the hotel and took care of every need. The hotel is located right at the edge of the action in La Jolla and is in walking distance to everything. If you like San Diego then this is a great alternative place to visit read more

The staff was extremely friendly and accommodating. My Wife, baby and myself had a wonderful experience at this hotel. The staff greeted us with smiles and tons of information. They set up a baby crib for us which was a bonus. The old style gave the rooms character and class. We highly recommend for families. read more

This is not a 4 star hotel. As you enter a charming, early 20th century lobby, you will be greeted by a massively stained area rug. That sets the tone for the entire experience. We pre-paid for an ocean view room to take advantage of an advertised discount, but were assigned a "village view." Unsatisfactory. Once we entered our room, it smelled like a stale ash tray. We left the windows open as we went to dinner to air it out. The rooms are updated in decor but old. It featured a HUGE walk-in closet, but a decidedly cramped bathroom. Additionally, like most 4 star hotels, it provided two complimentary bottled waters- one of which had previously been opened. Gross. The silver lining- the staff was friendly and helpful. We decided not to bother them with our complaints as we only stayed a night, but we will not be returning. Do not recommend. read more

Overall, decent restaurant except for one big thing that will prevent me from ever going to this restaurant ever again. They don't want to own up to paying their staff. They are one of these establishments that sneaks in a "minimum wage" surcharge to your bill. Not only is this a dishonest practice, it shows that the proprietors cares very little for their people. I will never go back out of principle and the fact that their manager is a rude weasel. I highly encourage everyone to boycott establishments like this that refuse to own up to paying their employees a fair minimum wage. It's not like they can't afford to. They should raise their prices and live with the consequences, not try to sneak in a surcharge to have us pay for their obligations to their staff. read more

NO HOTEL SECURITY - Our room was robbed on our last night staying at the Grande Colonial Hotel. A theif (we suspect a friend of the housekeeper) broke into our room exactly during the time we were at dinner on our last night there and ransacked the place. They ravaged through our suitcases, pulling out all of our things and throwing them on the floor taking anything and everything they wanted...our clothes, makeup, perfume, iphone charges, eye drops, gifts, shoes, purses and gifts were all gone. We estimated they stole ~$1500 worth of things. While the room had a small safe in it...who would think to put these regular every-day items in the there? The evening staff working the night we reported the robbery were useless, completely flustered and didn't know what to do. They said they'd talk with the Assistant GM the next morning. But it was obvious they had no procedures in place to address this situation. The next morning when we checked out, no GM and no answers. The morning staff person could have cared less about the incident when we told him how totally upset we were and how violated we felt. He asked us if we were checking out and gave us the print out of our incidentals. We said, "did you hear us?" He said there was nothing he could do, but that they were aware of it and passed the information on to the GM. When we finally talked with the GM after we got home, he was defensive we thought his maid staff was watching us during the week we stayed there and had something to do with the robbery. He did end up comping our incidentals ~$450. But his lackadaisical attitude towards the incident and lack of compassion for the situation was really disappointing. This property is completely open to the public with no security....the side gates along the side street, the back, the front from the restaurant - they have no idea who is coming or going. The GM told me they have to balance security vs ease of access for their guests...? He said they only have cameras in the front and back of the hotel, but not in the hallways. So they don't know who broke into our room. But they saw a person on their front door camera in a black hoodie with a backpack coming and going during the time of the robbery. We filed a police report. But In general, I would not stay at this hotel ever again. Their attitude and customer service was poor, the GM was flippant with our compliant and made us feel like it was our problem. read more

I stayed at the Grande Colonial on a Saturday night a few weeks ago prior to going to the Chargers game on Sunday with a buddy. Positives: We stayed in the adjacent building and the view from our room, #237, I believe, was decent but the view from the deck was unbelievable. Ocean, ocean, as far as the eye could see. The deck alone, plus the indoor seating area on the roof, are reason enough to stay here. The one-bedroom suite that we had was well-furnished, clean, attractive, had nice "freebies" in the fridge, etc... Negatives: The 9-10 restaurant was deserted at 6:30 PM on a Saturday night. We had reservations but ended up cancelling and going somewhere else that had some level of activity. There was a wedding party staying in our building. It was super loud, particularly at 2-3 AM. Sounds seemed to really resonate in the building. The wedding party also completely spread out, taking over the common area living room on the first floor. It would have been appropriate for the hotel to show some level of involvement. I crashed out on the sleeper couch and it was horrible. The mattress is so thin that no adult could possibly comfortably sleep on it. I got a series of bites across my left thigh and left buttock while sleeping on the couch. My friend, who is a licensed, practicing dermatologist, said that the bite marks were "trademark bed bug bites" and laughed as I showed him my left thigh, commenting "Look, breakfast, lunch and dinner! You supplied an entire meal!" So, we both got to take our respective clothes to the dry cleaner, wash laundry in hot water separate from other clothes, freeze a few things (cold and extreme heat can take out bed bugs) and threw out a a few non-essential items. I notified the hotel and got a call back a couple of days later from the manager who told me that the unit was thoroughly inspected and that there were no bed bugs. All I can say is that I've never gotten bitten like that in my life prior to or since. So, for nearly $400 after taxes and the like, I got a great view, slept like crap and was pretty itchy for a couple of days. It wasn't a stellar experience. read more

The BEST value in La Jolla for a 5 star ocean view! I stay at The Grande Colonial Hotel every time I visit La Jolla, which is at least once a month, a week at a time. I can't rave enough about the staff, the service, the food and the atmosphere. It's truly "a home away from home" if indeed my home was a mansion overlooking the water, which it isn't, as I live in Arizona. Suffice it to say: you will not want to leave, The Grande Colonial is that wonderful. read more

I believe the prices are too high for what you get. I agree the hotel is nice and very close to the water - maybe that is worth some of the price. However I feel their whole "partial ocean view/ocean view" price scale is the rip off. We checked in and received what I think was a partial ocean view, but the VERY friendly staff at the front desk said its labeled a "ocean view" they did offer me a room one story higher to accommodate, but I still think not worth the price ($379/night!!!). Definitely re-think the "ocean view" and make sure you know what you are getting. I thought the top floor should be the only "ocean view" rooms. Seems logical. Also, there are 5 stories to the main hotel, but one is a basement, so if you are on the 3rd floor you are really on the 2nd and so on. The other think that was annoying is that the are supposed to offer pool-side service, but we were our there for hours in the afternoon (during the pool-side times advertised) for two days in a row and received no pool side service. Also, you have to walk through the lobby to get to the bar and the restrooms from the pool. Rooms are nice, decor is nice, but its a old hotel and walls are thin (not really their fault I guess). Don't get me wrong, this is a neat, nice place but I really don't see 4 diamond nice. read more

I can't say enough compliments about this hotel. I booked it for a work trip and brought my husband for an extended personal stay. First, the staff accommodated for the business meeting above and beyond any hotel I"ve ever experienced! Amazing customer service. Meeting room was spacious and beautiful. They catered in breakfast and lunches for two days and the food was the best I have ever had. The personal stay was incredible. We enjoyed the pool, the restaurant Nine Ten, and appreciated being centrally located to everything nearby. Pros: - Nice room, walk in closet and flat screen TV - Nice pool ( a bit cold though, even if they mention "heated", customers -including us- complained about the temperature of the water...) - Great location, can't beat it -Nice staff Cons: -Small bathroom, tiny bathtub and one small soap for a family of 3 people during 4 days (???!!!) - Breakfast "included in Bed and Breakfast package... Well, actually you are restricted as it is not a buffet (can't have 2 beverages like an orange juice and coffee or a simple yogurt and toast). - No coffee/tea maker in the room, as well as no fridge. You have to call them and ask for one. We asked for a kettle to make some tea or coffee but they just brought 2 coffees... - we have been charged what they call a "package tax" which was absolutely not mentioned when we booked. Yes, this is a solid hotel. I really appreciate the history here but it has also been updated to a very clean, upscale hotel in the heart of la jolla. I would definitely stay here again. The service was satisfactory, the location was wonderful and our room was spacious and well appointed. We suggested we were there to celebrate Mother's Day and I'm not sure if it impacted the room selection but I'm sure we had one of the best ocean view rooms in the area. the service here is excellent and the staff's wonderful. that's probably the only good thing about the place. they let us check-in as soon as we arrived and were all really nice when we requested something. they also enforced wearing masks which was a relief given that the surrounding town was pretty laid-back on the CA policy which was actually super uncomfortable and weird as hell. we hardly saw people wearing masks or being 6ft apart around town so i appreciated that the hotel upheld that policy. other than that, we sadly didn't enjoy our stay. the worst part was that the room was run down and it looked really old, out of shape and could use some maintenance. it just ... wasn't nice. i was expecting something else - not something glamorous or resort-like, but just not that. we got a suite since we have a 18mo old so we wanted a slightly larger room so she can sleep in her crib away from us as she usually does, but it was regular size and similar to what a nicer motel might look like, maybe a motel6? our room didn't have a roll out crib so i had to ask for one and then the tv remote control was missing so someone had to come and configure one which took some time. that was all kind of odd since it entailed someone spending time in our room and we wanted to be as clean as possible. we ended up not watching any tv and were over it by the time he left. the location is also weird. i don't know if our bed or the AC was the worst part of it, i can't decide. i was in pain the whole night since the bed was extremely soft but in a really bad way. i just sunk in which resulted in lower back pain. then the AC was just out of control!!! my husband and i both woke up dripping - literally covered in water droplets from sweat - then all of a sudden, we were freezing. it's actually quite similar to what a fever feels like. at one point i just believed i was already sick by just sleeping there. we ended up feeling pretty stressed that weekend over relaxed so we left early. i definitely will never return and don't recommend it at all. also, note that the area is super dense and packed. if you're looking for a somewhat calm/chill getaway by the beach, this place is the 100% opposite. even during the pandemic, this area was FULL like there's no such thing as the coronavirus. we ended up by the pool for a short period of time, but that's it. the la jolla beaches nearby are filled with seaweed and flies so don't expect and real swimming, however you can admire the beautiful wildlife. the three stars are for the really nice staff and the fact that they enforced masks in a town full of people who don't really care. read more

I love the architecture of this hotel. The patio area is a really nice place to throw a birthday party on a sunny weekend day. There is valet service for your guests, and the catering is really good. We brought our own cake and whatever was leftover they boxed up for us. It's walking distance to the beach too. The staff was friendly...everyone had a great time...Happy memories... read more

Had a reservation for Friday and Saturday night that I called to cancel today (Wednesday). They said I needed to cancel by 4pm, I was 2 hours late, and they charged me $325 dollars. Seems pretty inflexible and guarantees that I will not reserve there again. Glad I switched to the Valencia. I would stay away from this hotel on principle. Most hotels require you to cancel 24 hours before. 48h is rare and the inflexibility of just 2 hours is aggravating to say the least. read more

Just recently had a VERY disappointing stay. Good experience with reservations and restaurant, BUT I AWOKE TO CONSTRUCTION THAT STARTED BEFORE 7AM?! I called the front desk after giving up trying to go back to bed. I asked about the hammering and they said they would have to (very belatedly) check it out. I went out in the hall & again heard the hammering below. All of the signs posted in the hotel and discussions - everything was scheduled to start MUCH later. Again, very disappointed (if I started that early in my hometown, they'd have pulled my permit). Wish they would have told guests the truth or just properly monitored the work being done in the hotel. read more

From the moment we arrived we were treated like royalty. We were very well greeted by the wonderful team of bell hops, whom learned all of our names and always checked in on the way in and out about our daily activities. Our room was quite lovely and quite spacious! Bed was so very comfortable. I spend a good amount of time pool side, it was nicely heated and not too chlorinated. A major plus. They even had ice water for you to help your self to while taking in the sun. Really a great hotel, close to the beach! Great customer service! Dont think twice, best bet in La Jolla. read more

Fantastic hotel, very nice decor and they are very helpful here, the pool is nice and the hotel is right in town which is nice especially because they have good stores, resteraunts and galleries here. Stayed here for a week during our honeymoon and dont regret a thing! Had a fireplace and full kitchen w stove and refrigerator!!! The views from our garden terrace suite were simply stunning. Check in was a breeze, the staff was top of the line, and throughout our stay Abraham was beyond helpful!!! They also surprised us and had champagne sent to our room for the special occasion. Free cokes, water, popcorn, chips, and nuts were provided everyday for free! My only nuisance was the small pool that only reached 3 feet, but that minor detail can easily be overlooked due to the fact that the beach was LITERALLY 10 feet away from our room LOL. Flat screen tv, fast wifi, huge bathroom. I mean, the list goes on and on people! This just isnt a luxury hotel, but a piece of history! Lets not forget all the wonderful eateries and shopping centers all within walking distance (and i hate walking!). We will definitely be staying here again!!! read more

This has become our go to place when we stay down in San Diego, its perfectly situated in front of a great area of beach where the seals like to play, the cave, and some great window shopping. Our rooms are always clean, the view of the ocean is great & the beds are sooo comfortable! We would certainly recommend this hotel! read more

A very beautiful hotel with charming historic details. Unfortunately the plumbing is historic as well. In my room, 314, I could hear the sound of water constantly running through a pipe in the wall, right at the head of the bed. It was remarkably loud, so much that I lost half a night of sleep. In addition, the shower head was so low I had to bend in half to get my hair wet, and I'm not particularly tall. If you are a sound sleeper and below average height, then this hotel might be perfect. Our first experience with the hotel was somewhat negative since when we pulled up there was nowhere to park (even in the temporary spots for loading/unloading) so my husband had to double park while I got out to check in. Then after receiving our room keys I was told we would need to drive around the corner and down the street since we were in the garden suites. "okay, so is there parking over there?" "no, we don't offer self parking. But your room package includes valet" "So, is there a valet stand over there?" "no, the valets are right out front" "Is that also where the bellman are? We have a lot of luggage." "no, we don't have bellman" So, I was picturing us having to hand our car over to the valet out front and then carry all our luggage down the street. I was not happy. Fortunately, once a valet was actually free to take the car, he explained that our room was just around the corner and that there was actually a small parking lot adjacent where we could unload and then he could take the car from us there. He also ended up helping us with our bags since even though it was not nearly as far as the guy at the front desk had made it out to be, we did have to go up some stairs. Once in the room, I noticed right away that the ceiling fan was not working (it was pretty humid that day) and so the valet (slash bellman?) said he would send up a repairman. To our surprise a very friendly maintenance man arrived less than 10 minutes later and solved our problem right away. By then my opinion had already changed and throughout the rest of our stay we continued to receive excellent service from the entire staff. Everyone we passed on the property from housekeeping to gardeners always wished us a good morning or good evening. And they must be a hardworking staff because everything was clean and tidy and the flora and vegetation on the property was gorgeous. Between the lush tropical landscaping and the colonial architecture of the buildings I really almost felt that I was at a resort in the Caribbean. In addition to everything else, another huge positive of this hotel is the fantastic location. It is an easy walk to a nice park where you have a gorgeous sea view and can watch the activity on Seal Rock and Children's Beach. Just a few more steps and you are at La Jolla Cove. Also, being right in the middle of the main tourist area of La Jolla means there are so many cool boutiques, art galleries, restaurants, and bars within a few blocks. We ended up walking everywhere we wanted to go and we didn't use the car at all. The only thing that keeps Grande Colonial from 5 stars is the price. We paid almost $400 a night. Our package included free valet and $50 per diem to spend in the restaurant. But that is still pretty steep for what we got. The garden terrace suite did not actually have a separate living area with a door to close off the bedroom so I wouldn't really call it a suite. It was nice to have the fridge but otherwise we didn't use the kitchen. I don't know if I'd get the suite again although from the other reviews it sounds like the regular rooms are pretty tiny. It was also a holiday weekend so I'd have to come back at the normal (hopefully much cheaper) rate and see what the value is for the regular rooms. read more

Pros: Great location in downtown La Jolla (not on the water), really nice and helpful staff, free wifi, cute outside eating area with heat lamps. Cons: Food isn't great, the rooms were musty and a bit dirty (hair in the tub when we got in), no fitness center (they have an arrangement with a gym down the street for a fee), no drawers to unpack clothes (I used part of the nightstand), expensive parking ($23 a day). Overall: Definitely not a destination hotel but fine if you need to be in the area and got a good rate. Probably wouldn't stay there again. read more

Absolutely loved this place!! One of the nicest overall hotel experiences I have ever had and I travel quite frequently. The location is amazing..very close to the water and to restaurants and stores. Everybody was super nice and my room was beautiful, spacious, and spotless. True-it's an older hotel and there is some street noise in the rooms facing Prospect, but the beds are super comfortable, the staff is impeccable, and the restaurant IMHO is the best in town. The Good: 1) Location - a couple blocks to both the beach and the shopping/restaurant area. 2) The front desk staff was very friendly and helpful - the valet guys, a bit less so, but they took care of my car. 3) Tiny but relaxing pool area. The Not So Good: 1) Tiny bathroom. I mean tiny. I know it's an old hotel, but there was also very little surface or shelf space. I had to leave my toiletries in my suitcase and shuttle back and forth to brush my teeth, etc. because there was no room in the bathroom, and that was really annoying. 2) No gym. 3) No coffee maker in the room. 4) Price. Yes, it's La Jolla, and it's upscale. But at the end of the day, I don't feel that the experience merited the price. read more

We stumbled upon the Grande Colonial while looking for a place to eat brunch in La Jolla. The restaurant is called Nine Ten and the food was delicious. The service was great too. And the hotel looked really cute. Next time, I would love to have brunch on the terrace overlooking the ocean. read more

My wife and I have stayed here 4 times. The first time was great but every time after was lacking. The hotel has not made any upgrades or updates in the last several years. The last two times we visited, we could hardly connect to the WiFi from our rooms (one bring being a suite). Attention in not given to detail. The bathroom has lose knobs and fixtures, the shower leaked and there was mold in the grout, the bed platform was cracked and scuffed, dust was on the baseboards around the whole room, the tea kettle was rusted on the inside, and the carpet in the lobby is stained. The staff could be friendlier, no one at the front desk smiled. One thing we found disappointing was that return customers are not valued. Previous stays are not acknowledged or greeted with "welcome back". We have stayed twice in January when it was super quiet and empty and not offered any type of upgrade. The location is great, central to beach restaurants and shopping. We plan on giving another hotel or rental property a try for our next visit. read more

Yeah baby! This hotel is fantastic. For $205/night, my girlfriends stayed in a beautiful room with down pillows and comforters and SUPER SOFT beds! They also had a huge plasma TV, an iPOD dock/stereo, free wireless internet, a walk-in closet and free breakfast in bed every day!!! When we were running late for a wedding at the cove, the valet drove us there in a little golf cart for free! My boyfriend and I stayed here for our 1 year anniversary and it was beautiful! We went in June, definite beach weather, sunny, gorgeous :). The hotel was very old "colonial" fashion, but it adds to the beauty of it. We were however, disappointed by the description of the hotel and how close it was to the beach. My boyfriend (who booked it to surprise me) was suuuuuper upset when we realized there was a whole other building and a street before reaching the street. He was under the impression, the hotel would lead straight to the beach. Nonetheless the beach view was amazing. The locaiton of the hotel if also perfect! It is near all kinds of shops, restaurants and entertainment, we easily spent an entire day just walking around. :) The restaurant had pricey but good food. If you're in the mood for a good steak/wine dinner. :) I would recommend! read more
