Grandpa's Cider Mill has been a fall favorite since I was a wee lad. I love coming here with my parents. I am drawn to the classics, apple cider with an apple cider doughnut. Yummmmm in my tum tum. The staff is always nice and enthusiastic which is definitely a bonus. I enjoyed chatting with them about what their favorite things from Grandpa's and how they like working there. And when I learned that this place offered a ton of different flavors of cider, I was psyched. Could this unlock new doors to my soul? We strolled up and selected our complimentary three flavors to sample. (It's $1 more for another three.) I was fond of horchata, cherry and blackberry, among others. As I sipped, the wheels started turning in my head. Why had no one else thought to flavor cider this way? And then I asked. "We just add flavored syrups to the cider." Cut to: The scene in Fight Club where Edward Norton realizes he is Tyler Durden. Are you KIDDING me? You take delicious, pure apple cider and you just pour a ton of high fructose corn syrup into it? What sense does that make? Why not add real juice from real Michigan cherries and blueberries? Man, I was so let down. Cider is not a sno-cone. It's not a Slurpee. You can't just add syrup like that. It's a mustache on the Mona Lisa. It's Crocs on the Sphinx. This offends me right down to my Petoskey stones. The most ironic thing? I sampled 12 different ciders and never tried straight unadulterated apple. You broke my heart, Grandpa. But, hey, cool metal dinosaurs outside. read more

Apologies to those that look forward to my random highway POI reviews. This is a review I should have written at the beginning of the summer and a point of interest all should enjoy when traveling through southwestern Michigan. In Coloma, Mi there is a number of treasures which warrant a rest stop. Here is one of their stars. Grandpa's cider mill; is a full service bake shop and cider mill. Visit on weekdays when the mill is in operation and cider is being produced. Almost any time workers are present and pulling pies, tarts, fresh cider donuts, muffins and more baked goods from the oven. The cider mill portion has a glass walled viewing area, so every aspect can be seen while you traverse around their general store shopping and looking over the many goods they offer. Make sure to bring a hearty appetite for tasting ciders, Grandpa's offers over thirty varieties of cider and tasting is free. (So long as you hold onto your cup, only one given per customer) That's flavored ciders. The cider is 100% pure, no sugars added. (Those on the GFCF diet or Gluten-free are good to go) Some of my favorite ciders are Horchata, Caramel, Spice, Blueberry, I could go on and on. Flavored ciders are sold in pints and half gallons. Once you find that one flavor you love, it's easy to blow through a half gallon in a matter of a couple days. Once it's gone, you'll miss it. I know I do. Horchata cider I do miss you, lots!. Grandpa's cider mill has also got a number of pies that will rock your taste buds. These pies go far beyond the stuff you find at grocery stores and for big city kids, way more legit than Bakers Square. I've also had the chance to taste pies from two farmers markets between Coloma and Saginaw and in my opinion Grandpa's is the best for pies. The cider Mill's pies are a taste sensation, these should not be passed up. Pies can be a bit costly, so if you can't do a full pie, there are other options. A few baked goods that are must tries; pie baked in a bag (any variety), any of their fruity pies and the cider donuts. Try a fruity pie first, like Harvest berry and then try the pie baked in a bag. The crust on it is so rich and crispy; it's almost like a candied coating. On some weekends the cider mill will have on display some vegetables that are locally grown for sale. On my most recent visit I got two bushels full of red and plump tomatoes for $9. A steal! On my walk out to the car I was juggling two bushels, a pie, a half gallon of horchata cider and two pints. I dropped three tomatoes on the walk. After dropping off the stuff in the car I walked back, cleaned the dirt off the orphans and proceeded back to the car. Meanwhile a manager from the mill witnessed all this and headed over to ask if she could switch out the tomatoes for me. I thought it was pretty cool of her to walk out fifty feet to see and then offer to exchange the items. read more

This place was a great surprise. We stopped in to look at baked goods after picking peaches down the road. It was Saturday and they were not making cider, but it was still cool to see the machines and the set up. I was surprised to see flavored ciders. They let you try 3 free samples. Everything I tried was delicious. We ended up buying donuts: apple cider, blueberry, and pumpkin. All 3 were great. I wish the pumpkin and blueberry didn't have frosting on them though. read more

Not your plain old cider experience! Not only can you see the modern cider press operation behind glass on one side, but you can also belly up to the bar for a free cider tasting experience (they offer a wide range of flavored ciders, specially blended to take home! I tried the horchata cider, which was interesting, but ultimately I bought the cherry and caramel apple). They also carry all the baked goods and beverages that you would expect, and even have a couple of big booths (and a nice porch) to eat them in. A must stop when we are heading up to Michigan! We love Grandpas Cider and get it at our local farmers market when we can not get up here! They also make the meltaway's which are to a must have! We usually get the variety pack (white and milk chocolate) I like the milk chocolate ones the best! The apple cider donuts are very tasty and they have samples out of most of the sauces that they sell. It is also a cute place to find a unique gift! Worth a stop! read more

Fall is in the air and Grandpa's Cider Mill put me in the perfect mood to fully enjoy it. Picture it: Sicily, 1910. Wait, no, Coloma, MI, 2009. The leaves on the trees are slowly turning their beautiful yellow, orange and red hues and the smell of mulling spices is in the air. Grandpa's Cider Mill is nestled right at the side of Friday Rd., a mile from 94. Ample parking awaits as you embark on a glorious journey of all things apple. My favorite part: watching the apples being dumped into the giant apple press so they could go through the mill! Upon entering, you have full view of the apples being pressed and the cider being made. Convenient signs tell you exactly what is happening and they're constantly making the stuff! Don't forget to stop at the front counter and grab yourself some hot cider, coffee or tea and a delicious donut - you can take these around with you while you go through all the items for sale at the store. Someone was ready with delicious samples of of cider at Grandpa's: Apple-Cherry, Apple-Grape and regular 'ol Apple. The Apple-Cherry was divine, so I highly recommend picking up a gallon or two. Continue browsing the delicious spreads, jams, butters and salsas that await at all corners of the store. Do you love samples? I hope so! Grandpa's is full of them! We sampled apple jams, butters and preserves as well as my favorite of the day: Apple Salsa. Made in the same vain as Mango Salsa, this concoction was fabulous. I bought a jar, that's how much I loved it. There's also a really cute selection of gifts for anyone on your holiday gift list. Tons of very cute serving platters, trays and spreading knives. Many of the items were handmade by local artisans, so get your hands on this stuff ASAP. I really loved it here. The hot cider was seriously the best I've ever had (sorry Franklin's Cider Mill) and I wish I had gotten a gallon of it. The donuts were delicious and I highly recommend getting a dozen just for good measure. Grandpa's Cider Mill is located about an hour and a half outside of Chicago, so it really makes for a great day/weekend trip. You don't have to live in Michigan to experience the wonders of fall and the fun of apple orchards and cider mills. read more

On a road trip on our way to Detroit, we do it the right way and stop off for some local flavor. I don't know what got into us that of all things cider excited us, maybe it's the sudden blizzard that hit us coming into michigan, but when we saw the billboard off I94 the entire car was in agreement that we should pay a visit. Grandpa does not disappoint. They have 25 flavors of cider all available to sample as well as apple , pumpkin, and every other kind of non-dairy butter imaginable. Our cider bartenders were wonderfully friendly and knew a lot more than I thought there was to know about apples. Their cider comes in pint and half gallon containers to make off with. All this in an unassuming independent business location. This place is far from a tourist trap as you may expect. Their production line is behind glass for everyone to see a-la krispy kreme only better. Did I mention APPLE DOUGHNUTS? They have those too. That was the first thing I smelled when I walked in. Yum! That about sums up our experience here. The cider was good, and the donuts were incredible. By some miracle, we had one donut left the next day, and it was still fluffy inside and the cinnamon/sugar mix on the outside was slightly crispy. We also purchased a blueberry pie as a gift for my mom for dog-sitting. She said it was the best pie she's ever had. That's pretty high praise coming from someone that had previously considered their own pie to be the best. This will definitely be on our list of stops when we travel between Detroit and Chicago. read more

Rando stops on road trips are the best. I love the cheese factor, what can I say? Driving to and from Chicago tends to be uneventful. I've done the drive so many times and never really bother to stop anywhere. This time was the exception. We got off the highway to check out the neighboring Chocolate Garden (not too exciting if you ask me). We hoped a quick look here would make up for the disappointment. Since it was a Sunday, the cider press was not working but it was cool to see the machines anyway. The shop features all kinds of interesting foods with plenty of samples. They offer 25 different flavored of apple cider, any of which you are welcome to taste. I wouldn't ask to taste all 25, because that would make you an asshole. But try a few. I sampled the pumpkin flavor, which I would say an absolute no to. I also tried the peanut butter flavor which was tasty, but I couldn't drink a whole serving of. The cider was good but I just wasn't feeling it. I would recommend paying attention to the baked goods. The pies in the bakers case are absolutely stunning. They are freshly made and look like the are from a page in Martha Stewart's cookbook. They also had some pretty red velvet cupcakes and good looking cookies. I ended up scooping up some donuts. They offer strawberry, blueberry and regular cider donuts, and I made sure we got all three to find the winning flavor. My pick is the strawberry but blueberry is a close second. Pricing here isn't cheap, but the flavors and homemade factor make them worth it. Finally, the staff is very friendly. The girls made sure there were plenty of samples for us to try. Overall, a cute stop when traveling I-94. Also, make sure you check out the Dinosaur Farm right next door. It's makes for some fun pictures. read more

I'm a big fan of the cider donuts from Crane Orchards in Fennville, MI but I'm even MORE of a fan of the cider donuts from Grandpa's Cider Mill. YUM-O!!!! From Chicago I wish I picked up a half dozen or more. Sadly, I only bought two with a small bottle of cider which was fabulous as well. This place has a bunch of cute things available to purchase in the store, a cider tasting bar, and bakery items. Not the old Grandpas cider mill we all once knew and loved. This place used to be a lot different than it is now. You can see any of the previous reviews and find what used to be grandpas cider mill. Now, you can get a few different ciders, apple cider donuts, and apple pie. It's very different than it used to be, and sadly, it would not be worth the drive if you are coming from more than 30 minutes away. We drove 3.5 hours to get here and were disappointed to see so much had changed. The staff is always kind and the donuts and cider are great as well- but not 3.5 hours worth of traveling great. read more

I'm a local (43 years) and only visited Grandpa's Cider Mill for this first time last summer. Oh my goodness, it was fantastic. They have a juice bar where you can do apple juice tastings like other places have wine tastings. They have different flavored apple juice, like chocolate, or caramel (and a dozen or more others). Along our trip to Michigan we saw billboards for Granpa's Cider Mill. We decided to make it a point to stop on the return trip. This is a cool place for younger kids where they can see the process and how its made. You are able to sample any flavor you would like. My son and I settled on the cantaloupe apple cider. We also picked up the fresh cider donuts and red velvet cupcakes and these all were fabulous. There is ample parking and very knowledgable staff working. read more

This place is so much fun! Take exit 39 from 94 and it's just a short way down the road. You can't miss the exit because there are lots of other places around it that cater to tourists from Illinois driving up to Michigan for a fall weekend (myself included) - wineries, chocolate shops, and fruit stands galore. Grandpa's has a field of dinosaur sculptures, which can make for lots of fun pictures. When you enter the store, you can actually watch them making cider - they have the main steps clearly labeled so you know what they're doing. It kind of reminded me of a small-scale brewery tour. The best thing here, of course, is the cider. They have a cider bar complete with menus listing all of their flavors. Simply let the staff know what you'd like to try and they keep bringing free samples! When you choose a flavor or two to purchase, they mix them fresh for you while you walk around the shop. They offer several different sizes of cider; we opted for the smallest size so we could get two fun flavors - raspberry and peanut butter! If you're going from Chicago to Michigan, or vice versa, this is a great place to stop (a hop, skip and jump from 94). I was in a bit of a hurry when I went, so I didn't get to meander around, but I promptly purchased a dozen each of the two types of fresh donuts they had available: cinnamon sugar donuts (so, so good - my favorite) and pumpkin iced donuts (nice - I don't usually find these at cider mills!). The cider was also tasty and fresh. One of the real kickers for me was the Lavazza coffee. Rarely do you ever find quality coffee at a Cider Mill. They also sell "pie in a bag" that's made in Wisconsin. I've purchased this pie before from Whole Foods and it's an incredibly delicious dessert, but it's very rich and it's incredibly cumbersome to remove the waxed paper from the pie which almost makes it not even worth buying. Anyways, our transaction at Grandpa's Cider Mill was really fast so we were back on the road again in no time. I've never visited any Cider Mills in Ilinois, but based on reviews I think it's worth visiting Grandpa's instead. read more

My husband and I ride with CMA (Christian Motorcyclist Association) and our members of Indiana's local Chapter Rhema Riders #813. We went on a fun ride that we call the Apple Run and Grandpa's Cider Mill was one of our stops. We had 18 bikes and 2 cars in our group and we had a blast at this stop. We had a awesome time sampling ALL of the different flavors of cider at the bar. Enjoyed being able to see how the cider is made right before our eyes. Another great stop in coloma, Mi. Lots of jams and salsa to try. And their cider was very tasty. There is a cider bar to sample as much as you want . The amaratto and chocolate were my favorite.
