we spent some time in the park during the winter and did some hiking. for convenience we went a couple of times to the restaurant for lunch. the food is ok (american), service was fast and nice. the waiters were definitely trying. food options itself were not that many but I appreciated the fruit salad options instead of fries for kids and grownups. the fruit were fresh and yummy, not like in many other places. burgers were fine, too. i liked this place more than the much more expensive and less friendly wuksachi lodge restaurant. read more

If you are starving you can't complain about the food you get....actually you can if it's from this restaurant. Slow service...and not the greatest service either. I was hoping the food would redeem it, but it didn't. Got garlic fries, they tasted like when you leave fries out for a couple hours. Then when we got our pepperoni pizza the thin crust was undercooked. It was still doughy. Had to ask to put it back in the oven. A couple of the workers were helpful which made it up but they weren't our server. All in all, it's not the greatest but hey at least it's food. read more

As others have said you are stuck if you want food within 30 minutes of Kings Canyon. So we reluctantly ate here. The service was slow, and they weren't all that busy. The meals are priced sorta fair, given the remote location. The quality of the food was below average. I had Chicken that was salty and soaked in butter. The white rice side and vegetables was slightly better. They had asparagus soup on the specials board, but Lindsay our server said it was out all gone yet still on the board. Then the table next to us ordered asked to order the soup and she let them saying it was just being made. The staff knew all the right things to ask and say, but yet I felt the service like they were trying too hard to compensate and fell short. The entire operation here by Delaware North Company is a symbol of government contracting at its worst. Apparently the only way they know how to cook food is to bread it and pan fry it. I've never before had chicken Marsala cooked that way, and it sucked. The trout was actually worse. Service was horrible, with the server never once asking how our meal was and never refilling our waters. Then there is the lodging. They lie about the lodging rates. Charge you one price when you reserve, then change the price after you've already checked in. When you go to check out, they increase the price because "the rates increase as it gets closer to the weekend." WTF?!?! They couldn't tell when I booked the room that I was booking on a weekend? And to top it off, since we didn't want to torture ourselves by having breakfast in the restaurant, we tried to buy stuff from the market they run, but they apparently don't have clocks that work, because they didn't open that on time. These examples Re why people hate government contractors. They're getting overpaid to rape the public. Horrible. Will do everything in my power to avoid spending anymore money with them in the future. read more

This place really hit the spot after a day of hiking. Food might be described as "upscale comfort food" like grass-fed beef meatloaf with fancy mashed potatoes and roasted vegetables. They also have burgers, pizza, pastas, etc. and a really nice trout filet. Portions were generous, and entrees include soup or salad- how often do you see that anymore. I was impatient the quality of the food for such a remote location. Ambiance is homey, the place was clean, and service for us was great: the restaurant was crowded but not quite full, but service was prompt and we got our drinks and food quickly. Not a good place. Really only came here twice as we stayed nearby at the John Muir Lodge. First night they ran out of veggie burgers, so I got a regular burger that was dry and overlooked. Half of us got our food then about 15 minutes later the other half of us got our food. My friend was happy with his buffalo wings and my wife pizza with white sauce wasn't bad, but really wouldn't be called good either. The second night we got our food to go. Waitress was kind of annoyed that we didn't have the menu memorized and wanted us to go find them, got some beer while we waited and they do have a good variety of bottles, but I don't think anything on tap. The food quality the second night was similarly mediocre, but the kids were happy with Mac n cheese and fruit...maybe that would have been the thing to get. I got a Caesar that was just gross; too much dressing and packed next to the warm stuff so it got all greasy and gross. We should have read the reviews before we stopped by here for a quick lunch on our trip, then we would have known not to come here. Besides the pricey menu, the service is TERRIBLE. I can understand they charge more than usual as the source of food will be more expensive here, however, the service should not be this bad. We came into the restaurant at noon and there were no other people waiting for their food. The guide lady sat us down immediately since there is NO BODY else was waiting and after waited for 10 mins, NO WATER, NO WAITRESS. Both the guide lady and the 'waitress' were cleaning the one table while there were 10+ empty clean tables. I went to the front desk and told the lady that we are ready to order, she did NOTHING! Then, two guys wearing business suits sitting next table were ready for their check, the waitress finally showed up and gave them the check and told us she will be right back with us.....then the two business men said they need another soda, waitress came back with their soda, still ignoring us....then the two guys said they need to get an 'official' bill for their expense reimbursement or something, then the waitress came back with their 'new' bill.....still no food for us. Finally after 20 mins of waiting, we decided to walk out of the restaurant, the waitress and the guide lady did not even both to say 'thank you' or sorry to us while watching us walking out.....What a TERRIBLE service place. DO NOT GO IN THERE. There is hot dog stand outside. $3.25 for a hot dog. You can finish in 15 mins and enjoy the nature scene more, rather than wasting your time sitting in a pricey restaurant with no food and poor service. read more

Grant Grove Dining Room - Within walking distance of John Muir Lodge and about a mile from General Grant Grove! Chef Brandon created a great new menu of delicious entrées! During our stay at the lodge for breakfast we had the Lemon Mascarpone Pancakes, Caprese Scramble w/ fresh basil, tomato, mozzarella & feta, Steel Cut Oatmeal, Mountain Potatoes and Vegetable Ratatouille, all very delicious!! For lunch we had the Grants Burger, Mediterranean Flat Bread & the Going Green w/ Citrus Vinaigrette! The vinaigrette was house made and the best vinaigrette I've ever tasted! Chef Brandon was kind enough to write down the recipe for me! For dinner we had the Autumn Vegetable Lasagna, Salmon Fillet w/ sesame seeds, Chicken w/ Pio Pio Sauce (a Peruvian slightly spicy green sauce) and finally the Rigatoni Pasta w/ chicken and house made pesto! I guess after reading we didn't catch them on an off day after all. Service was incredibly slow and food was good enough. They're probably only in business still because they are the only game in town. Allegedly they are under new management but don't hold your breath. I don't see them working out the kinks any time soon. Between hostess, servers and kitchen, no one seemed to have their act together. We also weren't the only ones having this kind of experience. Beautiful new restaurant indoor and outdoor dining, fireplace inside, open less than a month, will hold about 220 people. Staff needs better training. Food was good, I repeat the food is good. Had the Mary chicken pot pie, small, but it was in the area of the menu called light, pricing is actually better than I would expect in a National Park. We were seated. Nothing, no waiter, others were being served, table right behind us were being served, they ordered had their food and we couldn't even get someone to bring us water. Finally after about 10 minutes a manager type came over and stated that our waiter had gone to lunch. We asked for water and off this person went. I was with a friend, I stated maybe we should just leave, but we both were hungry and how long could they just let us sit here. (A really long time) finally the manager type person, came back over and took are order. Maybe if they get there ---- together I will re-review them, but at this point, I think it is training, there were a lot of staff, but they don't seem to go out of there way to help the patrons there. read more

Well one year later and the Grant Grove Restaurant is worse, not better! I asked the waitress if it had improved from 2014 and she laughed said "no it is much worse and that Delaware North had slashed even more staff." Our burgers were just weird tasting and the fries seemed held over from the previous week and were pretty much inedible. There used to be a decent pizza parlor as part of the restaurant but Delaware closed this down probably because the food was too good. I have been coming to Grant Grove for 27 years and when it was a family owned restaurant it was very good. Now that the National Park Service has turned it over to some Big Corporate, for profit Wall Street conglomerate, the quality is that of low grade dog food and the employees frankly could care less. Dump Delaware North now and fix this restaurant!!! read more

We had a veggie burger and fries, and a Caesars salad. The food was okay, but not great. Considering we're in a national park, it was acceptable. The menu is very limited. Vegan options are few. The service was good. Their beer selection is good - I drank a local beer, a General Sherman IPA out of Fresno. It was excellent, albeit overpriced at $5.95 for a 12 oz beer. Came up for a quick get-away weekend with the kids. John Muir Lodge accommodations decent- very clean and well maintained. Grant Grove restaurant- meh. Food is fine- nothing at all fancy. Service: S-L-O-W!! They seems to be understaffed, and quite overworked. Not much interest in customer service (tho server named Christina was very nice). Had four meals- two lunches, dinner, breakfast- each lasted well over 1.5 hrs due to SLOOOWWW svc. Upon entering restaurant, staff took no notice of us- seemed much more interested in cleaning already clean tables than in seating us. Pretty pricey for what it is, too. As others have already stated, this place is awful. Our service was super slow. We waited for 40 minutes for our food to come out. In fact, our server actually left for the day and they never sent over a replacement. Needless to say, our food was ice cold by the time it made it to our table. We went to breakfast this morning and what a disappointment! There were no clean tables and yet the waitress told us to sit anywhere we liked. We chose the least dirty of the tables and waited and waited all the while watching other patrons go and try to find utensils, syrup, etc. because the service was so poor. This restaurant opened on July 4 and the negative reviews show their rough start--fortunately, we were here on Oct. 20 for dinner when they had their system down and rolling smoothly. They have a nice beer and wine selection and our dinner was delicious! I had the cider-marinated pork chop which was tender and flavorful and accompanied by mashed potatoes. The salad was fresh and included vegetables that are currently in season. My husband had the chicken pot pie and a cup of chili, and he enjoyed the flavor of both items along with the warm bread. Our server, Andrew, was excellent and contributed to our enjoyable meal. Prices are reasonable as we had 2 beers, 1 glass of wine plus dessert in addition to our main items for under $60. Beautiful venue in a gorgeous location with delicious food brought us back for breakfast. Breakfast the following morning consisted of french toast which was a satisfying way to start the day. This place rocks dinner and when we go back there, the menu offers four or five items I would still like to try. read more

National Park concessionaire restaurants are never wonderful places, but I've never seen a place as poorly run as this. You'd get better food and service if you went into the forest and waited for a bear to come by and crap on you. There doesn't seem to be anyone manager-like running the place, so it was run on the night we visited by three waitresses who didn't enjoy their jobs and were in the middle of an extended fight with the befuddled boy seating people. We waited 10 minutes to be seated in a practically empty restaurant, then waited another 10 minutes for a bitter waitress to bother showing up. She brought us pieces of charcoal to eat about 20 minutes later, then told the befuddled host boy that she was leaving, and that he could have whatever tips she might get. I never stiff a waitress, but neither she nor the befuddled boy got anything from us. If you absolutely must eat, drive the 40 miles to Fresno. It's worth it. read more

We made the mistake of going here for lunch. It took about 20 minutes to be seated, ages for our order to be taken, and then around 50 minutes for our lunch to appear (and only after we had asked where it was). Then we had to wait ages to get our bill and wait another 10-15 minutes for someone to collect it, so I eventually took it to the cashier - at which point our waiter came and took it off me and went off to clear tables with it - not very helpful at all. By the time we left there were only 3 other couples, who had recently arrived. These couples also looked like they were going to have to wait 50 minutes for their meals, and there was only 3 sets of them!!!! I observed other tables that weren't given a menu (had to find one themselves), another table that had to go and find their own silverware and we had to find our own water to replenish our glasses. Overall, I wouldn't recommend this place. The servers are not rude, but they act like being a waitress would be much easier if they didn't have any customers!!!
