Actually, I hardly ever go to Safeway anymore. Shelves are always well stocked, store is very clean, and just a pleasant place to shop at. I've never tried the food at the self-serve buffet, but it usually looks pretty fresh. I like that it's never too crowded here, so you can maneuver your way around the aisles easily.

In one incident over a year ago, another customer verbally harassed me and threatened physical harm while I was shopping. Her child was left unattended and was knocking items over, which I reported to security. The guard failed to do his job and did not intervene appropriately. When a supervisor arrived, the situation was handled much more professionally. I should feel safe shopping in my local market. That guard no longer works there, but the experience was upsetting and difficult to move past. Unfortunately, in January 2026, I encountered similar issues with a new security guard. He has repeatedly followed me around the store without cause. Most recently, he approached me unnecessarily, stood uncomfortably close, and spoke to me in an intrusive manner while I was selecting items. His behavior showed poor training and a lack of respect for personal boundaries. These repeated experiences with security staff are negatively affecting the atmosphere at Woodlands. I am a respectful, regular customer and do not want to feel uncomfortable or monitored without cause when shopping. Proper security training and professionalism are essential for customer safety and trust.

Some things are definitely more than you'll pay elsewhere (most of the crackers for example). Pasta and canned goods prices were okay; in general maybe a bit higher than some places but not too much so. For vegetables, they do have some nice deals and stuff you may not find elsewhere (heirloom tomatoes, early girl tomatoes, variety of fruit and different vegetables). I felt like the tomatoes alone were worth the trip (grape tomatoes for cheaper than I saw anywhere else, beautiful heirloom tomatoes at a decent price, and early girl tomatoes which can be hard to find in the winter [I haven't had them yet but they looked fresh]). There aren't a ton of options for the meat counter but they are all quality items and the prices show. For example, the only chicken they had was Mary's chicken. The cheese selection was great especially for a small store and they had some nice meat, olive and peppers (homemade?) options for charcuterie boards. They also sell premade meals. Probably not the place you should buy everything you need but it's a good supplemental option and there were some gems. I guess they have a few locations so I would be back to this one if I'm in the area and would also check out one of the other stores if convenient too.

One place in Bernal Heights where you can see and find good drink and food is at the Good Life Grocery on Cortland Avenue. The Good Life Grocery has two San Francisco locations. The first one is in Potrero Hill ( by Loard's Ice Cream) and the second location is in Bernal Heights. Inside the Good Life in Bernal Heights you will see organic produce , coffee , ice cream, and seafood. This place reminds of a Bi- Rite/ Whole Foods Market but with a Bernal Heights neighborhood vibe. They also sell food to go like sandwiches ,salads , sushi, and wraps. This is a good place to pick up anything from drinks and food and then go and enjoy the views at Bernal Heights Park of the Mission District and the Downtown San Francisco skyline. It was a bit on the dry side but tasty as the sauce is tangy and flavorful. I liked that I merely covered the provided aluminum container with foil, baking it in my toaster oven. I also bought a plastic tub of Teresa's salsa (https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?userid=saJuyv784apZzH--psHZ3Q&select=X5p2lC9zT7SVczCrTKKD8A), a brand I've never seen (Santa Cruz) as well as a bottle of pasta sauce (https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?userid=saJuyv784apZzH--psHZ3Q&select=s6NOe6OuMYz0bk78rXr_lg). The salsa was okay but I liked that it was from a local business. I will try the pasta in the next couple of weeks. I have not visited Cortland Avenue for a number of years save an Elite event at United Dumplings during Covid. Coming on a Sunday morning, I saw a steady flow of people going in and out of this market with small bags. Great that this place has modernized substantially with the attractive counters for the take and go, deli, and meat sections.
